For this month’s installment of “TV Terrors” we revisit one of the most iconic bits of horror movie marketing of all time: when Jason Voorhees took “The Arsenio Hall Show“!
The first time I ever saw the teaser for Jason Takes Manhattan was on the weekend of July 5, 1989. My dad had taken my little brother and I to see Weekend at Bernie’s, and while we were sitting through the trailers, Jason Voorhees suddenly popped up. It was that famed teaser that everyone remembers with Jason looking out onto the cityscape, promising a Friday the 13th sequel wherein Jason would quite literally slice and dice his way through New York City.
Although my parents strictly forbade us from watching Friday the 13th films at the time, I was utterly enamored with Jason Voorhees at just six years old. The teaser didn’t scare me, but it excited me, and ended...

‘What is going on with Kate Middleton?’ is a mystery that might even trouble the likes of Benoit Blanc at this point. Since being spotted at the Christmas morning service at Sandringham Church, the Princess of Wales has disappeared from the public eye, and the internet, as expected, has gone wild with the theories regarding the matter.
The only update regarding the 42-year-old’s whereabouts came from Buckingham Palace, which revealed she had undergone an abdominal surgery and is expected to resume her official duties by April. However, British Comedian John Oliver hasn’t ruled out the possibility of her death, as he went on to joke about the matter by referencing the dark comedy Weekend at Bernie’s.

Julia Fox stepped away from Hollywood to write her life story.
The “Uncut Gems” breakout star told The New York Times that her upcoming memoir “Down the Drain” became her career focus as opposed to taking on new roles.
“I had been given a deadline, and I kind of misunderstood what that meant,” Fox said. “I had to turn it in in, like, three months or something. I thought I had six months. The book swallowed my life. Everything became book, book, book. I didn’t go out. I didn’t take other jobs.”
Fox called it “offensive” that fans are assuming she hired a ghostwriter for the book.
“Well, I’ve had people be like, ‘Off record, between you and I, did you use a ghostwriter? Did somebody help you?’ It’s kind of offensive,” Fox said, citing that she has previously been public about writing “every word” of the book.

As any critic will tell you, when you’re watching a comedy with an audience, it doesn’t matter how bad the movie is — even the jokes that are making you groan are going to provoke laughter. (That’s why comedies are always screened with a crowd; the studios want the audience giggles to rub off on you.) But at the Venice Film Festival, when I saw “The Palace,” Roman Polanski’s garish debacle of an ensemble comedy, I was sitting in the Sala Darsena, which seats 1400 (and was full), and on the rare occasion when a line in the movie got laughs, it was literally coming from about six people. I’m not sure if I’ve ever heard a giant theater this deadly silent for a movie that’s working this strenuously to amuse you.
Polanski, if you look back over his credits, has an astoundingly consistent track...

Ted Kotcheff's 1989 comedy "Weekend at Bernie's" was considered outrageous at the time. Andrew McCarthy and Jonathan Silverman play a pair of low-level insurance wonks who, in the course of their daily work, find a mysterious "mistake" on the books. It seems that someone has been committing fraud. When they take it to their boss Bernie (Terry Kiser), he invites them to his beach house as thanks for figuring it out. Bernie is, of course, the perpetrator and intends to murder them. Before he can, however, Bernie is killed by a vengeful mob boss (Bernie was sleeping with the mob boss' sister). When the McCarthy and Silverman characters arrive, they find Bernie dead, surmise that foul play is afoot, and figure they have to protect themselves from any further mob violence ... by pretending Bernie is still alive.

What if you died but could somehow manage to still entertain guests at your exclusive beach house party, mark up the price for your Porsche by 20 grand and sell it, and perform in the bedroom like you never have before ... all while evading a hitman? That's the 1989 dark comedy "Weekend at Bernie's" in a nutshell. Terry Kiser stars as the titular character, which means he plays a corpse for most of the film. And almost the entire film uses Kiser playing dead. However, his co-star Andrew McCarthy revealed that there is one scene in which a real body wasn't used. (Side note: we talked to Andrew McCarthy about his memoir and '80s nostalgia in 2022.)
In "Weekend at Bernie's," Larry (McCarthy) and Richard (Jonathan Silverman), two young professionals looking to climb the corporate ladder at their New York City insurance company, show their boss, Bernie Lomax, that someone within the company has committed insurance fraud.

Andrew McCarthy was one of the most popular actors of the '80s and an esteemed member of the Brat Pack, alongside teen idols like Emilio Estevez and Molly Ringwald. Thanks to two of his most famous Brat Pack movie characters, Blane in "Pretty in Pink" and Kevin in "St Elmo's Fire," McCarthy became synonymous with the sensitive, angsty, nice guy, but he'd challenge that image by starring in the 1989 black comedy "Weekend at Bernie's."
The absurd film revolves around two young salesmen, Larry (McCarthy) and Richard (Jonathan Silverman), who drag their boss' corpse around so they can continue hanging out at his beach house and avoid getting wacked by mobsters. Actually, it's just a study of all the different ways two selfish yuppies can use and abuse a corpse, which is a far cry from McCarthy's gentle and compassionate brat pack roles, and far less introspective than anything John Hughes ever wrote.

Ridiculously absurd. Cartoonish. Offensive, maybe? Those are just a few words to describe "Weekend at Bernie's," the 1989 dark comedy about two young professionals --Larry (Andrew McCarthy) and Richard (Jonathan Silverman) -- who drag their dead boss' corpse around an island to avoid being taken out by a hitman. Even some of the movie's cast members thought the idea was asinine. But it appears their attitudes changed when they started filming the movie, according to Andrew McCarthy's recollections (via The Hollywood Reporter):
"We thought it was funny s*** as we were doing it ... There's the old saying, 'If it's funny to you on set, it ain't going to be funny on screen,' but we found it really f****** funny. We loved Bernie, and we just wanted to do more s*** to him. So a lot of the s*** we just thought of on set. I love 'Bernie's.' I think it's great.

We've known for some time that Ryan Reynolds has been working on a third "Deadpool" movie. Together with "Zombieland" writers Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese, the actor/gin peddler/Welsh football team co-owner continued to work on the project even after Fox was purchased by the Walt Disney Company. Except. now that the film rights for the Merc with a Mouth and the other X-Men characters were reunited with the likes of the Avengers, the Guardians of the Galaxy, and the Defenders, the fan-favorite character is finally able to be a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Shortly after that, Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin were tapped to work on a draft of the script and filmmaker Shawn Levy signed on to direct. But there has been radio silence since then.

With its list of new releases for September 2022, Prime Video is finally unveiling the most anticipated (and expensive) series in the streamer’s history.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will arrive to Prime Video’s servers on Sept. 2, 2022. This Lord of the Rings prequel, set in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Second Age, is in many ways the kind of TV property that Prime Video must have always wanted. It’s certainly the TV property most fitting with the company’s largesse and riches. The Rings of Power will cover the creation of the titular rings and many important events from Tolkien’s lore (condensed into a more TV-appropriate timeframe).
Middle-earth is going to be the happening spot on Amazon and the streaming world at large this month, but Prime Video does have a handful of other originals for the fantasy-phobic. Flight/Risk, a documentary about the Boeing 737 Max design disasters,...

But as Ian’s demons emerge, both his daughter, Dr. Cade Sullivan (Kaley Ronayne) and our doctors face a dilemma. Where do you draw the line with a doctor whose own life is spiraling dangerously out of control, even as the keeps saving lives?
Dr. Ian Sullivan made his debut in the medical drama last season following Cade’s nearly fatal shooting when she desperately needed a donor match for her rare blood type. She survives but Ian ends up becoming a medical emergency himself after suffering from abdominal pains that turned out to be pancreatic cancer.

It's only natural that a place as storied as Hollywood has its fair share of myths and urban legends, and Tinseltown has produced some real blockbusters over the years. There is the debunked rumor that one of the actors playing a Munchkin took his own life on the set of "The Wizard of Oz" and can be seen swinging from a tree in one scene; or the claim that Walt Disney is cryogenically frozen beneath the "Pirates of the Caribbean" attraction at Disneyland; or the sadly true tale of actress Peg Entwistle, who leapt to her death from the Hollywood sign.

Summer is about to finally, blessedly be in full swing. And to honor the occasion, Hulu is showing up big with its list of new releases for June 2022.
Hulu is bringing two major TV titles to its stream this month. The first is The Orville: New Horizons on June 2. Seth MacFarlane’s sci-fi/comedy started as a simple Star Trek parody on Fox before blossoming into its own entirely sincere space adventuring beast. Now “New Horizons” promises to be a fresh start for the series on Hulu. Next up is Only Murders in the Building season 2 on June 28. Season 1 of this Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez-starring series was a big hit. Let’s see if our favorite podcasters can pull it off once again.

If you're a child of the '80s (or a fan of films from that decade), you're probably already a huge fan of Andrew McCarthy. He was part of the Brat Pack, the star of "Pretty In Pink," "St. Elmo's Fire," "Mannequin," "Weekend at Bernie's," "Heaven Help Us," "Fresh Horses," and "Less Than Zero," which turns 35 this year. He's also appeared in "Good Girls," and will have a recurring role in "The Resident," and you've likely seen his directing work in "Orange is the New Black," "Good Girls," and "The Blacklist."

Operation Mincemeat was an aptly absurd code name for what was, on the face of it, a preposterous British military mission: In 1943, with Allied forces planning to invade Sicily and wrest it from fascist Axis control, two intelligence officers conspired to convince the Nazis they were targeting Greece instead, pulling off the ruse with false documents and the stolen, dressed-up corpse of a fictitious British marine. It’s a true chapter of history that nonetheless sounds like a war film as dreamed up by Ealing Studios scriptwriters; it’s practically begging to be made into a farce, and sure enough, the gag-filled knockabout musical “Operation Mincemeat” hits London stages this very month. As coincidence would have it, the screen version of the same story arrives in U.K. cinemas near-simultaneously, though any similarities end there: stately and stiff-lipped, John Madden’s handsome film approaches its tall tale with a very British sense of decorum.

Look, not every month is gonna be full of bangers. Amazon Prime Video’s list of new releases for March 2022 is extremely light but still has a couple of good options for streaming obsessives.
The biggest title this month is undoubtedly The Boys Presents: Diabolical on March 4. This series presents eight different stories set in The Boys‘ universe, all offered up by different writers. Since each of the eight mini-episodes are animated, it’s probably fair to say this is The Boys‘ Animatrix. Call it the “Anivought”.

“Emergency” starts out fast, loose, and boisterously nasty, with two buddies at the relatively upscale Buchanan University doing that thing that buddies do best: giving each other shit just for being who they are. Kunle (Donald Elise Watkins), in his button-down shirts, with a quick tongue but a tendency to gawk, is a straight-a straight arrow who’s invested in his studies. His parents are doctors (and rather stern African immigrants), and as he works on his senior thesis, which involves bacteria specimens, he’s doing all he can to live up to their highly disciplined dreams for him. He’s a geek, but not a dull grind; he likes to party. He just believes in the future. Sean (Rj Cyler), on the other hand, with his jewelry and sexy hair and homework-what’s-that? glare, believes in the dope he’s smoking and the moment it seals him into. He loves Kunle like a brother,...

[Warning: The following story contains spoilers about the Nov. 14 episode of “Succession.” Read at your own risk.]
The Screen Actors Guild Awards have overlooked “Succession” twice now, but that should change this year. The popular HBO drama about the dysfunctional but immensely compelling Roy family is in the middle of its excellent third season, and the Sunday, Nov. 14 episode, “Retired Janitors of Idaho,” is one of the show’s best outings yet. It proves not just why the cast should easily snag a nomination for drama ensemble at the SAG Awards (it’s currently sitting in first place in Gold Derby’s combined odds), but why it should win as well.
The episode — which revolves around the annual Waystar Royco shareholders’ meeting and whether or not the family will retain control of the company after Kendall’s (Jeremy Strong) actions last season — features some of the only moments in Season 3 in which the entire cast is in the same room. Exclusive: Network Entertainment has optioned Andrew McCarthy’s bestselling memoir Brat: An ’80s Story and will produce a documentary adaptation, the company said Monday.
McCarthy, who rose to fame in the 1980s with roles in such classics as St. Elmo’s Fire, Pretty in Pink and Weekend at Bernie’s, long has pondered what it has meant to him to be an integral member of the iconic group of movie stars known as the Brat Pack. Writing the book, released earlier this year, answered many questions that he’s wrestled with throughout his life. But it also brought up more. Was being identified as a Brat Packer the worst thing that ever happened to him, or was it actually the best?

It’s not yet August, but this summer has already smothered the United States in multiple record-breaking heatwaves. As with any crisis, Be Reel looks to the movies for wisdom, catharsis, and lunacy. This week, it’s three heatwave pictures: “The Seven Year Itch” (1957), “Do The Right Thing” (1989), and “Weekend at Bernie’s” (1989).

Now, this podcast category isn’t necessarily synonymous with, say, “Sweatiest Movies.” If so, we would’ve just watched and reviewed “Body Heat” (1981) three times.

The VOD charts continue to reflect what may be a cultural trend. Theaters are driven by a very few franchises, while home viewing reflects a broad swath of genres, audiences, and interests — much as the theaters did in the late 20th century.
Theatrical grosses over Independence Day weekend were driven by “F9,” “The Boss Baby: Family Business,” and “The Forever Purge.” Together they grossed $65 million over four days, or 75 percent of the total box office. The revenue generated by streaming is unknown — but charts and tracking services reflect millions of viewers watching Chris Pratt save the world in Amazon’s “The Tomorrow War,” IFC’s comedy-horror adaptation of VR game “Werewolves Within,” and Steven Soderbergh’s small-time ’50s crooks in HBO Max’s “No Sudden Move.” In addition, four different, long-running films are at #1 on different charts.

Hulu’s list of new releases for June 2021 is highlighted by a host of useful library titles and one fascinating original film.
The original film in question is the one that lends its delightful photo of Pierce Brosnan delivering a baby to this post. False Positive stars and was written by Ilana Glazer (Broad City). It sounds like a really fun, creepy time with a synopsis that reads: “After months of trying and failing to get pregnant, Lucy (Glazer) and Adrian (Justin Theroux) finally find their dream fertility doctor in the illustrious Dr. Hindle (Pierce Brosnan). But after becoming pregnant with a healthy baby girl, Lucy begins to notice something sinister through Hindle’s gleaming charm, and she sets out to uncover the unsettling truth about him, and her own “birth story.” Cool!
Hulu’s other original offerings aren’t too inspiring this month. Only Love, Victor season 2 on June 11 moves the needle much.

As professed by Monica E. Geller herself, “The One with the Embryos” is certainly among the very best episodes of “Friends.” Valid arguments against its No. 1 ranking would have to highlight Phoebe’s absence from the heated trivia game. After all, there are great bottle episodes featuring the whole Central Perk crew (like “The One Where No One’s Ready”), great episodes grounded in reveals (“The One Where Everyone Finds Out”), romance (“The One With the Proposal”), and routines (“The One With the Routine”), and, of course, there are the Thanksgiving episodes (“The One Where Ross Got High” tops among them).
But really, “The One With the Embryos” isn’t just a flawless episode of television; it’s a flawless episode of “Friends,” in that it illustrates just how deeply the creative team understood their show. Lifting Phoebe out of the A-plot actually works in her favor, since learning facts...

Last weekend, the 2020 Nightstream Film Festival offered genre fans a ton of amazing online offerings to enjoy throughout its four-day festivities. Here’s a look at two of the films I had the opportunity to check out during Nightstream: Mandibles from Quentin Dupieux and Mickey Reece’s Climate of the Hunter.
Mandibles: While I haven’t had the opportunity to check out Deerskin just yet (which also began making the festival rounds), as a big fan of his work on the blissfully absurd Rubber, I had a sneaking suspicion that I was going to enjoy Quentin Dupieux’s Mandibles immensely, and it did not disappoint. Made in the same spirit of all those slapstick ’80s comedies of errors that so many of us grew up loving, Mandibles is a delightfully offbeat tale of two friends who come across a giant oversized fly and set out to domesticate it in...

The first theatrical release to reschedule in the face of Covid-19 was “No Time to Die.” As the 25th installment in the main 007 series, it’s part of an extraordinary franchise that’s survived nearly 60 years, with seven leading men as James Bond; someday, presuming the pandemic permits it, there will be a 28th Bond title, with an eighth leading man. (Daniel Craig has repeatedly sworn that the Cary Fukunaga Bond film will be his last.)
But first things first. “No Time to Die” is currently slated for November 20, and this week saw unconfirmed speculation that even the fall date may be unduly optimistic. There’s little assurance that American theaters will have resumed normal operations, and China also looks daunting with its announcement that until further notice all theatrical releases must be two hours or less. (Fukunaga’s film is a whopping 2:43.)
One well-placed source categorically denied the possibility of pushing again.

Starting with the bouncy desk lamp that introduces every Pixar movie, America’s most beloved animation studio excels at refashioning familiar material with fresh emotion. That formula — whether it involves ebullient toys or snarky closet monsters — yields such satisfying results that even a lesser Pixar movie can radiate vision.
“Onward,” the witty and wistful tale of two brothers trying to finish the spell that will resurrect their dead dad, underscores this point: It’s not a star of the Pixar canon, but this big-hearted reworking of fantasy and emotional family bonds .
Context is key. The spectrum of quality for Pixar movies ranges from “decent but underwhelming” to “flat-out masterpiece,” and “Onward” falls somewhere in the middle. A solid new addition, it lacks the psychological sophistication of “Inside Out,” the wondrous slapstick of “Wall-e,” or the narrative foundation of the “Toy Story” franchise. Still, director Dan Scanlon (emerging from the shadow...

Four women go wild at a Miami bachelorette party for their Bff Jess (Scarlett Johansson), an uptight candidate for state senator who has to work through some control issues. Good premise. It's club time for the ladies – Frankie (Ilana Glazer), a lesbian activist, and her former lover, real-estate diva Blair (Zoë Kravitz); Pippa (SNL Mvp Kate McKinnon), Jess's Aussie bud from her year abroad; and schoolteacher Alice (Jillian Bell), the college party animal who never reformed and still feels no shame over her rep as a "foot-job girl." After deciding to get a stripper, they accidentally kill him and have to figure out what to do. I prefer this to the other all-women party comedy Girls Trip, it just seems funnier. Some very sad news is circulating today, as it's been reported that Don Calfa has passed away at the age of 76.
Multiple sources, including The Hollywood Reporter, reveal that Calfa passed away at his residence in Yucca Valley, California.
For many horror fans, Calfa will forever be known as Ernie, the mortician who helped his friend Burt and a group of young punks take on an army of zombies in Dan O'Bannon's The Return of the Living Dead. In addition to his indelible dialogue, Calfa's believable role as Ernie grounded the film in reality—his reactions to the dead coming to life mirrored how many might have reacted in a similarly bizarre (and frightening) situation.
A go-to character actor, Calfa's film credits also included roles in The Postman Always Rings Twice, Weekend at Bernie's, Chopper Chicks in Zombietown, and Martin Scorsese's New York, New York, and he also...

Scarlett Johansson is certainly more well-known for being an action star than anything else, but she's set to lead the cast of some very funny women soon for Sony in Rock That Body. Besides Johansson, it boasts Ghostbusters' Kate McKinnon, Broad City's Ilana Glazer, and Workaholics's Jillian Bell. And we've just found out they'll be going up against the Transformers. The previously named Move That Body is now Rock That Body and Broad City's Lucia Aniello is set to direct with a script by Aniello and Paul W. Downs (who will also be in the film). The screenplay was on the 2015 Black List and feels like a little bit The Hangover and a little bit Weekend at Bernie's if you ask me. Deadline writes, "The raunchy comedy follows a group of friends whose wild bachelorette party goes so far off the rails, that a male stripper turns up dead.

Back in December, we wrote about how Scarlett Johansson will be starring in a female-centric R-rated comedy called Move That Body that's been described as The Hangover mixed with Weekend at Bernie's. Now she's gained some hilarious co-stars, as THR reports that Kate McKinnon, Jillian Bell, and Ilana Glazer have joined ScarJo and Zoe Kravitz in the new movie.
The script centers on five friends who get a beach house in Miami for a wild bachelorette weekend that goes completely off the rails when they accidentally kill a male stripper, and they have to deal with the fallout.
McKinnon is one of the most consistently funny performers on SNL and stands to break out on the big screen in the new Ghostbusters movie. Bell has been turning in strong supporting performances for a little while now, including solid work in The Night Before and 22 Jump Street. Glazer is one of...

Well, seven hells. It has been 10 months since Jon Snow died in the "Game of Thrones" Season 5 finale, but our watch has not ended. Thanks to "The Red Woman" -- the title of the surprising, but not completely satisfying Season 6 premiere -- it has only just begun. As of now, the late Lord Commander is still a Weekend at Bernie's corpse being protected by his friends. (Bless you, Ser Davos.) But the episode ended with Melisandre stripping (again), poised for some kind of action. However, is that action ending her own life? Or does she do that little necklace removal ritual every night before bed?
We learned a lot more about The Red Woman this hour. As it happens, she's not quite as hot as she seems. And she's older than she looks. (Maybe it's Maybelline?)
Looks can kill. It is known. (lol) #GameOfThrones pic.twitter.com/RyW96rbJAW
