Crowdfunding campaigns are everywhere these days, and with this week’s report on the huge success of films financed through Kickstarter (more than 8,500 projects have made their goal since 2009), the number is sure to keep getting bigger. So, how do you choose which projects to help out, if that’s something you’re interested in? The easiest way to go is to find familiar talent, such as a veteran indie filmmaker looking to both avoid the established studios and financiers and focus on pleasing his fans rather than a suit with a checkbook. Animator Bill Plympton is a perfect model for how crowdfunding works best with an artist’s fanbase, by calling on and also giving back to the loyal followers as well as potential newbies. His latest feature, Cheatin’, is currently in the works and needs financial support, which he’s seeking through Kickstarter. It’s likely mostly people who know and love past “Plymptoons” like...

Prometheus (20th Century Fox) Ridley Scott’s quasi-prequel to his 1979 classic “Alien” has an intergalactic exploratory team (Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Guy Pearce, Charlize Theron, Idris Elba) arriving on a uncharted planet, where they discover what appears to be a dormant alien spacecraft and what might be the first discovery of intelligent life outside of Earth. Of course, everything goes straight to hell before you can scream “Don’t touch that egg!” Sumptuous visuals and strong performances from the cast (not to mention a nearly-perfect first half) can’t compensate for gaping plot and logic holes that nearly sink the proceedings in the film’s protracted second half. It feels as though some very crucial footage wound up on the cutting room floor. Perhaps, as with “Alien” and “Aliens” we’ll see a “Director’s Cut” of “Prometheus” arriving on DVD within the next year. In the meantime,...

Last year I previewed all 33 of the Oscar qualifying animated shorts that were up for consideration for the Academy Awards and this year I have 12 additional shorts to consider and I have found either the full short, a clip, a trailer or an image from all but two of the contending shorts and put them together in this one article. These shorts have all been screened for members of the Short Films and Feature Animation Branch of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences who will soon vote on the ultimate short list that will be in contention for an Oscar nomination. Last year ten films made the list. Take a look over the next eight pages and see which ones stand out to you. There are a few instances where you may have to click a link to watch a clip and, in one instance, to watch the entire film.

Bill Plympton is one of the most creative and prolific artists to emerge out of the independent animation shorts film arena of the late 1980′s. His short Your Face was nominated for an Academy Award and follow-up shorts like How To Kiss and How To Quit Smoking became the highlights of several traveling animation compilations and festivals. He soon branched out into feature films with The Tune and set up a New York animation studio to produce commercials and music videos along with more features and shorts. Recently Plympton has helmed several live action features. He’s here in St. Louis to accept the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 20th Annual Stella Artois St. Louis International Film Festival. Mr. Plympton was kind enough to take time out of his busy schedule to speak with me by phone.

For many years one of the pleasures of going to a screening of the different traveling animation festivals ( Spike and Mike, the Animation Tournee ) was seeing a new film from one of the medium’s wildest , most outrageous artists, Bill Plympton. Well this year St. Louis Film Festival attendees get a double treat. The recipient of a Sliff lifetime achievement award will be here to present a program of works on Friday night and debut a new documentary directed by Alexa Anastasio on his life and films, Adventures In Plymptoons, the next day ( Oh, and a master class earlier that day ). The documentary serves as a great introduction for Plympton newbies while giving some great insight into the films that we long-time fans have so adored.
The film includes much biographical info on the artist. There are lots of great family photos and home movie footage. Siblings, relatives, and class...

Comic-Con International has released the full schedule for Sunday July 24th for San Diego Comic-Con 2011. This is the final day of the convention. Sunday is known as Kids day and is usually the slowest of all the days, there are a few surprises though. In all my years of going to Comic-Con I've never been to a panel in Hal H. Usually nothing is happening in Hall H on Sunday, this year there are a few TV programs going on in Hall H such a as Glee, Supernatural, Doctor Who, The Cleveland Show, Sons of Anarchy, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and this year Buffy the Musical will be in the great Hall as well. I've never been to the Buffy Musical event, and I think I finally want to go this year. A couple of other things worth noting are a one on one panel with Nathan Fillion, and Max Brooks talks about zombies.

Bill Plympton is the hardest working animator in the world today. No disrespect to any other hard-working animators out there, but it’s absolutely true about Plympton. He’s constantly working on several working short films and features at the same time. Plus, he flies all over the world to film festivals and events to promote his work, which you can read all about on the new blog Scribble Junkies that Plympton produces with his friend Patrick Smith.
And now Bill Plympton has taken on the monumental task of self-distributing his latest feature film Idiots & Angels, which is about a selfish man who magically grows wings one day that instantly make him a target for other people’s selfish desires to abuse his gift for their own gain.
After a successful festival run, Idiots & Angels will finally make its theatrical premiere at the IFC Center in NYC on Oct. 6. Then,...
