Ice Ice Baby. Go Ninja Go Ninja Go. If a guy was everywhere in 1990 and 1991, it was Vanilla Ice. A white rapper from Dallas, Texas – whose real name is Rob Van Winkle, the much-mocked but extremely popular rapper scored a multi-platinum debut with his album To The Extreme, which sold seven million copies and, at the time, was the fastest-selling hip-hop album of all time. His signature track, “Ice Ice Baby”, which sampled Queen’s “Under Pressure”, was the highest-charting rap single ever, as was his cover of “Play That Funky Music”.
Vanilla Ice was so popular among teens that he showed up as himself in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2: The Secret of the Ooze, where he sang “Ninja Rap” (Go Ninja Go). But, just as quickly as he rose, Vanilla Ice fell, with his acting debut, Cool As Ice, widely mocked as one of the worst films of...

When HBO’s “The Idol” premiered to a resounding “ugh, really?” from the general public last month, there was a specific label people were quick to apply to the series: vanity project. Who the show was a vanity project for depended on which creator was being complained about at the time. But haters of the instantly despised pop star erotic thriller were practically universal in their assessment that the show was an ego stroke for star The Weeknd and/or series director Sam Levinson: both of whom took their lashings over the course of the show’s five-episode run.
The pair clearly had sky high hopes for the series, to the point that it received a rare TV premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2023 before its broadcast debut in June. That was criticized by many as a deeply egotistical push, but its inclusion at the festival did...

How many people ever look back at the music they enjoyed when they were a kid and go ‘yikes’ but in the best of ways? It’s been confirmed that Dave Franco will be starring in a Vanilla Ice Biopic titled To The Extreme, after Ice’s big debut album that was able to get off the ground thanks to Ice Ice Baby. Even his movie, Cool As Ice, didn’t really do much, and his career from that time on started going down in a big way as a lot of people should remember. To be fair though, Robert Matthew Van Winkle,

Collaborate and listen, because Ice is back with a brand new invention. And that invention is a biopic where Dave Franco slips into Vanilla Ice’s borrowed hammer pants. The news, which came late Wednesday, confirmed Franco will play the infamous rapper in To the Extreme.
Franco confirmed the news himself to Insider while also revealing the film is being imagined as a Disaster Artist and Ed Wood-like biopic about musician Robert Matthew Van Winkle’s life. That earlier 2017 film, which co-starred Franco, was written and directed by his brother James Franco, who also led the movie by playing Tommy Wiseau, the legendarily awful filmmaker behind cult classic train wreck, The Room.
Franco opened up about the project to Insider when he said, “We have been in development for a while but we are inching closer and closer to preproduction.” He went on to compare it to The Disaster Artist by adding,...

There's an end credits gag in Inspector Gadget that's up there with much of what Marvel offers you once the film's over...
Lots of people don’t like the Inspector Gadget movie. Released in 1999, Disney certainly had high hopes for it, earmarking it as a key blockbuster for that year. Tellingly, though, Rupert Everett would not inaccurately describe the film as “the $100m mess” in his memoir, Red Carpets And Other Banana Skins.
He went further. Talking about the elongated days of shooting on the movie, he wrote that “behind the scenes lurked a panel of executives, each with their own theory and agenda. A string of writers had written version after version, each adding to our scripts on a different-coloured paper, each one losing the plot a little bit more, so that by the end, or rather the beginning, they had managed between them to render...

Hello, online millennials! Do you recall the ’90s? Bill Clinton was our sax-playing emperor of America (or, as we called it back then, “president”). For fun, instead of shit-posting or hate-scrolling through Twitter we squeezed yogurt into our mouths while skateboarding with cartoon dogs. An app was a thing that came with ranch dressing, the Antarctic ice shelf was still intact, and MTV was still cool. It was a merry decade, where nothing was wrong and everything was fun.
Or at least it would seem that way while watching this surprisingly intricate supercut of ’90s dance scenes, which splices together beloved films like Clerks, Gremlins, The Fifth Element, Pulp Fiction, Jerry Maguire, and, um, Cool As Ice at their most ecstatic moments. While the song choice is unfortunate—Bloodhound Gang’s “The Bad Touch,” a.k.a “We ain’t nothin’ but mammals”—the editing is inspired, cramming 83 different ...

Earlier this month, when Vanilla Ice announced via Twitter that he was boldly defying instructions to evacuate his Florida home in the face of Hurricane Matthew, it not only inspired what had to be the greatest (and possibly also the most depressing) tweet ever made by the Florida Democratic Party, but it also made one hope that it might really be a sneaky promo for an upcoming Weather Channel series wherein the rapper and reality TV star goes head to head with natural disasters.

Adam Sandler's comedy western lands on Netflix. So: any good?
The comedy western movie is super hard to nail. For every Blazing Saddles, there’s a Wild Wild West. For every Rango, there’s a Shanghai Noon and for every The Good, The Bad, The Weird, there’s a Lightning Jack.
For The Ridiculous 6 – the first of four Netflix productions he’s signed on to make with the streaming provider – Adam Sandler has gone where (the relatively popular in comparison) Seth MacFarlane crashed and burned just last year with A Million Ways To Die In The West.
In this satire of The Magnificent Seven, Sandler stars as a man who is raised by Native Americans after his mother is killed walking him to school. After his estranged father (Nick Nolte) suddenly shows up to reconcile with him and is subsequently kidnapped, Sandler takes it upon...

Last week, we had fun chiming in on how Sundance 2016 might look like with our Sundance predictions list. Our series was exactly one short from the promised 75. We decided to switch things up this year. Our last pick is reserved for what is a next to impossible, needle in the haystack guess at what films might break into the short film sections. Out of the 8000 plus submissions the Sundance Short Film programmers will receive, they’ll end up selecting a little less than a hundred short films. Here are some ideas as to who and what could show up.
The Bulb and The Procedure
No stranger to Park City, Calvin Reeder has supplied the fest with features such as The Oregonian (2011), The Rambler (2013) and could very well bring this Kickstarter pairing to public access television blitz and X-Files love. Production wrapped in August. Actors Linas Phillips and Christian Palmer star.

While the controversy around Adam Sandler's Ridiculous 6 continues to swell due to its portrayal of Native Americans, an unlikely ally has spoken out in support of Sandler: Vanilla Ice. The Cool as Ice rapper, who starred alongside Sandler in the 2012 comedy That's My Boy and will appear as Mark Twain in Ridiculous 6, defended the comedian against the Native American actors who left the Netflix production because they felt it was perpetuating negative stereotypes.
"It's a comedy," Vanilla Ice told TMZ. "I don't think anybody really had any ill feeling or any intent or anything.

If you're like us and value your sleep, you probably nodded off into your Ambien dreamland before the party started on post-prime time TV. Don't worry; we've got you covered. Here's the best of what happened last night on late night.
"The Voice" coach Blake Shelton stopped by "The Tonight Show" and played a round of Random Object Football Toss with host Jimmy Fallon, in celebration of the start of football season on Thursday night. The pair attempted to throw items through a target, with mixed results, mostly because the objects were so odd (and mostly food-related). A bowl of eight-layer bean dip ended up making the biggest mess, though unsurprisingly, it was also the most fun for Shelton and Fallon to toss.
Shelton sat down with Fallon to discuss the host's recent purchase of a truck, with the country crooner offering up some advice on how best to care for the vehicle.

What goes on tour stays on tour – unless it's caught on camera. With classic Beatles comedy A Hard Day's Night returning to UK cinemas on July 4, and Metallica's triumphant set at Glastonbury reminding us how far they've come from darker days, now feels like the time to look back on some of the movies that prove that maxim.
Below, we catalogue the craziest music movies ever made, helpfully divided into four distinct categories of weirdness.
Bad Behaviour
Beginning with its 70-something subject attacking the director with his walking stick, Beware Of Mr Baker (2012) introduces a man – ex-Cream drummer Ginger Baker – so bellicose he's made the whole world his practice kit. Like Brick Top from Snatch with even greater anger-management issues, Baker is a bitter old codger who "communicates more through his drums than his words", according to his long-suffering daughter. He certainly doesn't mince the latter.

Is it too late to add some films to the Oscar short list for the Live Action Short? Unfortunately, yes, that was announced last week, and anyway the 11 new shorts we have to share today are more like short shorts. Each is only about a minute in length and barely has a narrative. Made exclusively for this year's New York Times Magazine special movies issue, they're all directed by Oscar-winning cinematographer Janusz Kaminski, who shot Cool As Ice -- and, sorry, also Schindler's List, Saving Private Ryan and most of Spielberg's films since. The "(very) short films," as the Nyt describes them, bring together the year's great talents for various kinds and styles of scenes. Each is based around a single line written by notable writerly...

In the playground of entertainment, it’s easy to see Hollywood as the school bully; grabbing video games, cartoons and even board games by their heels and shaking them ’til all their money falls out. While we generally turn a blind eye to the board game bashing, it is the cartoons that we cherish the most. For wrapped inside their theme songs, catchphrases and collectable action figures is a still-beating sense of nostalgia. And no matter how many hundreds of millions of dollars Hollywood can throw into trying to recreate it, it is a commodity that ultimately proves priceless.
Many an animation has stretched itself into a feature-length episode or TV special. Some have even enjoyed commercial success with spin-offs and cinema releases. But, as we’ll see, nothing kills a cartoon quite like the words ‘live-action adaptation’. Except, of course, the words ‘live-action adaptation- in 3D’. Listed below are...

Time to get serious, PopWatchers. Please immediately tear yourself away from videos of kittens or Honey Boo Boo reciting Christopher Walken lines or your latest ridiculata fix because Hart of Dixie heartthrob Wilson Bethel is bringing the bananas. In this EW exclusive, Bethel is premiering the music video for his new web comedy Stupid Hype. This loving homage to the early ’90s falls right in the center of the Venn diagram of “Ice, Ice Baby,” “Baby Got Back,” and every other awesome thing from the heyday of Hypercolor and high-rise jeans. Behold below!

Wilson Bethel proved himself to be more than just a pretty face (and a seriously killer body) when Call Me Doctor, a music video he wrote, premiered in January and hit Immortal ranking (100,000 views) within the first 24 hours.
The Hart of Dixie star now is back and rocking the mic right once again as the writer/creator/producer/star of Stupid Hype, a new digital series that will help launch The CW's Digital Channel this September. Not only has TheInsider.com snagged an exclusive photo of Wilson as the titular 90s rapper, but we caught up with Wilson to find out how Hype came to be, what Vanilla Ice has to do with it and when we might see Rachel Bilson spitting some more ill rhymes!
TheInsider.com: Where did Stupid Hype come from?

Well, this is certainly going to make my piece about the Sherlock Homes: A Game of Shadows (coming next week! only here at Film School Rejects!) press conference a touch more interesting. Deadline Ratcliff reports that Warner Bros. is currently “making a deal” with director Guy Ritchie and his new partner Lionel Wigram to “come aboard” their The Man From U.N.C.L.E. feature that was recently vacated by director Steven Soderbergh. That’s really just sort of vague – Deadline has really buried the lede on this one, finally getting to it – “the intention is for Ritchie to direct the film.” A ha! Elementary! Ritchie and Wigram recently formed their own production company after making two Sherlock Holmes films together. Wigram wrote and produced the first Sherlock Holmes film, and serves as executive producer on the next installment, opening next week. Wigram has a bevy of other titles under his producer belt, including...

A good movie tagline can, at the very least, help in the promotion of a film. But what about when it goes wrong? Er…
The art of the movie tagline is a tricky one that generally involves locking clever people into a room until they come up with something catchy. Yet, sometimes the coffee machine isn't working. Everyone is in a bad mood. There's no Toby Ziegler figure to come in and solve everything.
And that's when you end up with this collection of oddities. Here, we're looking at taglines that just do little to sell the film. In all truth, we quite like some of the ones we're about to show you (Hombre is a corker). But do they do their job? Er, not really.

This Charlton Heston-headlined 1974 disaster movie was, in fairness, released at a point where poster taglines were just a little bit minimal.

Rapper and Dancing on Ice star set to revive Hollywood career in new comedy I Hate You, Dad
You always knew he could "wax a chump like a candle", but now it transpires Vanilla Ice believes he can act.
The rapper, real name Robert Matthew Van Winkle, is set to star in Adam Sandler's new comedy I Hate You, Dad, Variety reports (paywall).
Van Winkle has been in films before. Back in his 1991 heyday he was the star in Rebel Without a Cause-style rapping flick Cool as Ice. In 2005 he was in The Matrix parody The Helix ... Loaded and last year he played Heckler No 3 in Big Money Hustlas prequel Big Money Rustlas. He has also appeared frequently on television on shows such as his house renovation series The Vanilla Ice Project and in the UK version of Dancing on Ice. However, it is fair to say I Hate You,...

When looking at the Timeline of Relevancy, it.s actually kind of hard to remember where Vanilla Ice fits. The guy release a catchy-if-not-stupid rap song in early 1990s that blatantly ripped off the beat from Queen and David Bowie.s .Under Pressure. and his biggest contribution to the film world was a song and cameo in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze and a truly awful remake of Rebel Without A Cause called Cool as Ice. So now we are posed with a question: is his role in the upcoming Adam Sandler-Andy Samberg comedy I Hate You, Dad going to make fun of him, or will he be in on the joke? Variety reports that Ice, as well as Gossip Girl star Leighton Meester have both signed on for roles in the comedy, which is set to be released June 22, 2012. While Ice, real...

Lionsgate has just signed a new two-year first-look deal with Tyler Perry, and no wonder: the guy is a machine who turns out films that cost little and make a mint. The director's latest for Lionsgate will be Good Deeds, which he'll write, direct, produce and star in, as Glen Deeds, "an affluent and successful entrepreneur who's about to get married when he becomes enamored with a down-on-her-luck single mom." That basic plot setup is as well-worn as most of the character types in all Tyler Perry's films, but that never seems to matter when it comes time to find an audience. Probably helps, in fact. A lot. The film will shoot later this month in Atlanta. [Variety [1]] After the break, Ryan Reynolds plays a snail and one-time hitmaker Vanilla Ice plays a wedding coordinator. Yup, this is one of those articles. While Ryan Reynolds has recently said that Green...

In this week’s Confused Views, Matt describes his fruitless and often frightening attempts to interview Rob Zombie...
I feel like I'm stuck in a no win situation. For several months now, I've been submitting interviews to the Den Of Geek editors and for several months they've refused to publish any of them.
At first I assumed that it was because I was interviewing random people on the street and asking them questions that could, in the right circumstances, be used to have me convicted of a surprisingly wide variety of crimes. I blame the times. What, these days, isn't considered saucily haranguing an old lady?
Sensing that this could be the problem, I started submitting interviews with famous actors, writers and directors and they featured nothing but appropriate questions for the site. I had some big names, too, and we would have been able to break some pretty incredible stories.

In what could be the oddest pseudo biopic since 1991′s Cool As Ice, Deadline is reporting that Paramount has plans to turn juggernaut pop star Justin Bieber’s life story into a 3D feature film…all 16 years of it. With documentarian Davis Guggenheim (It Might Get Loud, An Inconvenient Truth) behind the lens? Apparently so, as the Oscar-winning director is currently in talks to helm the film, said to feature performances from Bieber’s current tour with a planned release for Valentine’s weekend of next year. Bieber will, in fact, play himself. I guess Ellen Page was unavailable.

Cool As Ice stars Vanilla Ice as the leader of a tough motorcycle gang who falls for a small town girl and tries to melt her heart.

I'm thinking a lot of you are going to disagree with this assessment, maybe in some cases violently, but for all of my troubles with "Glee," particularly since the hiatus, all was temporarily forgiven when Mr. Schuester broke into Vanilla Ice last night. It was awesomely gay, and maybe only those of us who experienced Cool as Ice could truly appreciate it. But man: I had no idea that you could completely de-fang the already fang-less "Ice Ice Baby." Mr. Schuester actually suggested that "Ice Ice Baby," had to have its "bad-boy reputation rehabilitated," Danny Zuko'd that motherfucker, and then had the audacity to exclaim, "This song has been officially paroled!"
That's "Glee" at its paradoxical best. It sells you a line of pixie-stick dust and tells you its cocaine, but we'll snort that sugar-smack right off the mirror and convince ourselves we're high while we're pulling apart our nostrils.

The Action Pack presents
Cool As Ice in HeckleVision
your texted heckles appear on screen under the movie!
Sun, Feb 7, 9:30pm at the Alamo Ritz
Advance tickets available here
I was only fourteen years old when this “hip hop” remake of Rebel Without A Cause featuring Vanilla Ice in the James Dean role hit theaters, but even though as a card carrying white suburbanite I was of course a proud owner of To The Extreme and knew all of the words to “Ice Ice Baby,” I was still disappointed by how horrible Cool As Ice was. But that was then.
Looking back on it with fresh eyes now, though? I can see this film for the crowning cinematic achievement it always was. I could never adequately describe the experience of watching this magical gem with a crowd in a darkened theater, but do yourself a favor and head over...

To continue my review of my epic journey to watch all my films from A-z, this is the Third part.
For those that don’t know I am watching all 700+ Dvd/Bluray films from A-z which has so far taken me 2+ years to get to the end of G’s!
I thought I should retrospectively review each letter and give my top 5 films from each alpha block and maybe bring your attention to some films you may not have seen, films you’ve not seen in ages or films you should give another try.
Another letter and another bunch of classics I should own and a selection of ones I’m glad to say I don’t own.
A few to mention are Catwoman, Cannonball Run, Cape Fear, Clash of the titans, Cool running’s, City lights, Chinatown, City of God, Cheerleader Ninjas, Cool as Ice, City on Fire and Casablanca.

The Jonas Brothers are set to make their feature film debut with an upcoming Fox comedy based on the popular bestseller "Walter the Farting Dog." Say what? Oh, it's true. The Brothers, who have learned nothing from Crossroads, Cool As Ice and other ill-advised ventures from pop-stars into retarded movies, will star in the film about a group of teen musicians (ahem) who are asked to care for a fat, old dog that farts a lot. Hilarity ensues. What makes the project even odder is...
