Michelle Pfeiffer is a three-time Oscar nominee who has starred in a variety of classics in her long career, excelling at everything from comedy to drama, romance and action. Take a look back at 15 of her greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Pfeiffer has had a 40+-year career on screen and has managed to overcome being known at first just for her looks. While her beauty was prominently on display in many of her first roles she quickly became more than just a pretty face and plunged herself into deeper and more complex roles. Pfeiffer’s first professional acting job was on a TV series version of the film “Animal House” called “Delta House.” Her character on the TV show was referred to simply as “The Bombshell.” This debut hardly signaled the arrival of an actress good enough to someday earn three Oscar nominations and seven Golden Globe nominations along with one win.

All evening, the Oscar ceremony appeared on course for a Scarface reunion of Al Pacino and Michelle Pfeiffer to introduce the final award for Best Picture.
Instead, Pacino walked out by himself to present the category, with the announcer portraying this as a tribute to the 50th anniversary of one of Pacino’s signature movies, The Godfather.

While the Scarface reunion was never formally announced, it was fully expected, and Pacino and Pfeiffer were both confirmed as presenters, so Pacino going solo was a surprise.
According to sources, Pfeiffer was not able to attend the ceremony for personal family reasons and was on the East Coast Sunday night.

Michelle Pfeiffer has been dazzling audiences as one of Hollywood’s most recognizable leading ladies for decades. Throughout her illustrious career, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has expressed its adoration for the actress by nominating her eight times at the Golden Globes, including her winning performance in 1990 for “The Fabulous Baker Boys.” Her latest bid is for “French Exit,” a surreal comedy from Sony Pictures Classics that could land Pfeiffer her second Globe and first win in more than three decades.
Pfeiffer faces off against Maria Bakalova (“Borat Subsequent Moviefilm”), Kate Hudson (“Music”), Rosamund Pike (“I Care a Lot”) and Anya Taylor-Joy (“Emma”) for Best Film Comedy/Musical Actress. None of Pfeiffer’s competitors come close to matching the veteran’s eight nominations to date. Pike had two prior bids for “Gone Girl” (2014) and “A Private War” (2018). Hudson was nominated once before (and won) 20 years ago for “Almost Famous.” Bakalova...

“Seriously?” asked the celebrated, thrice-Oscar-nominated actress of an overstepping journalist.
It was April 2018 and Michelle Pfeiffer was sitting on the stage of the Beacon Theatre beside director Brian De Palma and actor Al Pacino, her collaborators on the controversial gangster classic Scarface. And to the apt mystification of actress and onlookers alike, the moderator of the event, Jesse Kornbluth, wanted to know what Pfeiffer weighed in 1983.
Pfeiffer had reunited with De Palma and Pacino at that year’s Tribeca Film Festival for the 35th anniversary of the movie that propelled her to multi-million-dollar-paycheck, magazine-covering movie stardom. Pfeiffer was so intent on scoring the supporting role of Elvira Hancock—the abrasive, indolent, fashion-forward wife of Pacino’s vicious drug kingpin Tony Montana—that the then-little-known actress paid her own airfare from New York to Los Angeles to audition. The actress, who the year prior had tackled her first lead role in...

As with Jessica Lange, who recovered from her big screen debut in the flop remake of “King Kong” to become an awards darling, Michelle Pfeiffer has made us forget her first starring role in the tepid “Grease 2” in 1982. The following year she was paired with Al Pacino in the blockbuster crime drama “Scarface.” In the nearly four decades since, she has co-starred with some of the biggest names in Hollywood in such hits as “The Witches of Eastwick,” “Married to the Mob,” “Tequila Sunrise,” “The Russia House,” “Batman Returns,” “Dangerous Minds,” “Up Close & Personal,” “One Fine Day” and “What Lies Beneath.”
Oscar buzz is building for her critically acclaimed performance in the upcoming Sony Pictures Classics release “French Exit” (due out February 12). That got has us reminiscing about her trio of previous bids. Let’s take a look back at Pfeiffer’s first three Oscar-nominated performances.

Michelle Pfeiffer has signed on to star as Betty Ford in the upcoming Showtime series “The First Lady,” Variety has learned. In addition, Susanne Bier has signed on to direct and executive produce the anthology series.
Formerly known as “First Ladies,” the show is described as a reframing of American leadership, told through the lens of the women at the heart of the White House. Pfeiffer joins previously announced cast member Viola Davis, who will star as Michelle Obama. The first season of the series will also explore the life of Eleanor Roosevelt, with that role yet to be cast.
Ford was the First Lady of the United States from 1974 to 1977 as the wife of President Gerald Ford. She was active in social policy and set a precedent as a politically active presidential spouse and one of the most candid first ladies in history, commenting on every hot-button issue of the time.

In a 1991 essay, John Gregory Dunne said male stars are allowed to age gracefully onscreen, unlike females: “Men grow older; women grow old.” In general, he’s right: Acting has always been a difficult profession, especially for women over 35.
Dunne (1932-2003) unfortunately didn’t live long enough to see this year’s notable work by actresses over 50. That list includes Candice Bergen, Ellen Burstyn, Glenn Close, Gong Li, Laura Linney, Sophia Loren, Frances McDormand, Julianne Moore and Meryl Streep.
The list also includes Michelle Pfeiffer, who looks more beautiful than ever and gives one of her best performances in Sony Classics’ “French Exit.” She has not grown old or older — she’s grown deeper.
Variety first mentioned her in January 1979, when she was 14th billed in ABC’s “Delta House,” an “Animal House” knockoff. She landed another short-lived series, “B.A.D. Cats,” and had guest roles in “CHiPs,” “Fantasy Island,” “Enos...

Michelle Pfeiffer has been Oscar nominated three times, and a fourth nom could follow in 2021 thanks to her well-reviewed leading turn in Azazel Jacobs’ “French Exit.” Adapted by Patrick deWitt from his own novel of the same name, the dark comedy casts Pfeiffer as a penniless widow who moves to Paris with her son (Lucas Hedges) and cat, who may or may not be her reincarnated husband. The supporting cast includes Valerie Mahaffey, Imogen Poots, and Danielle Macdonald.
In his review out of the New York Film Festival, IndieWire senior film critic David Ehrlich wrote, “‘French Exit’ is never in a hurry to get anywhere, but Pfeiffer’s lush and crumbling turn always gives it a sense of direction. Her Frances is like an old bird of paradise who’s spent its entire life in a mahogany cage, and suddenly has to migrate halfway across the world to die in style.

“It’s an honor just to be nominated” is the overused line that many Oscar nominees have said over the years, particularly after a loss. Though that’s true, winning a coveted statuette is the real prize.
The highest-profile overdue veteran actor competing for an Oscar this season is Glenn Close, the wisecracking Mamaw in Ron Howard’s “Hillbilly Elegy.” With seven previous nominations (the most of any living actor without a win), Close, who has delivered win-worthy turns in “Dangerous Liaisons” and “Fatal Attraction” looks to finally have her moment. Her most recent loss, for 2018’s “The Wife” to Olivia Colman in “The Favourite,” was felt in awards enthusiast circles. With what seems a thin roster of supporting actress contenders this year, Close is in the running once again, looking to go against Colman’s work in “The Father.”
Close’s co-star Amy Adams is playing the same card this year in “Hillbilly Elegy.

Do the Oscars hate comedies? If you look over their 92-year history, with so many infectious films and performances ignored in favor of more “serious” pieces of art, the assumption could be made. This year, faced with the Covid-19 pandemic, and with theaters not being the normal avenue to watch films, moviegoers and industry professionals are viewing releases more differently than ever.
The Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. pushed the Golden Globes to Feb. 28, 2021, the last day of the eligibility window for the Oscars. With their best comedy or musical designation, the Globes can highlight the laughs in a year that’s seen so much tragedy. It’s possible that Oscar voters, with fewer films to consider, will think outside the box when making selections for the Academy Awards, which will be held in April 2021.

“Patrick’s writing just transports you … painting these wildly eccentric, slightly larger-than-life characters and yet rooted in this reality,” said Michelle Pfeiffer when discussing the novel that inspired her new film “French Exit,” which was the closing night selection at the virtual 2020 New York Film Festival. The novel and the screenplay were both penned by Patrick deWitt, whose writing is “funny, witty, really smart and sophisticated, unapologetic and at the same time incredibly moving.” Watch Pfeiffer’s Q&a with co-star Lucas Hedges and director Azazel Jacobs above.
Pfeiffer stars as Frances Price, a widow who transplants herself and her son Malcolm (Hedges) from New York City to Paris as their finances fall apart. There’s also a cat, and a psychic medium, and a private investigator, and other characters who enter their lives in unusual and often absurd ways. “I felt immediately so connected to the story,” Jacobs explained,...

New York Film Festival closing-night selection “French Exit” is that rare gem of 2020: a high-profile new movie that nobody has seen. Released by Sony Pictures Classics, it is a close collaboration between two old friends, author-turned-screenwriter Patrick DeWitt and director Azazel Jacobs (“The Lovers”). The director lured Michelle Pfeiffer and Lucas Hedges to star in this comedy confection, adapted by DeWitt from his novel about a once-wealthy widow who leans on her handsome 20-something son for support. When she decamps to Paris with wads of cash after selling off all her worldly goods, it’s understood that her son will accompany her, leaving behind his one-time fiancee (Imogen Poots).
“What’s special about the film,” said NYFF head programmer Dennis Lim at Friday’s virtual press conference, “was its unusual, unpredictable tone. It’s surreal and dark and deadpan, and also heartfelt, as some changes happen moment to moment.

“To work with Sony Pictures Classics is a dream come true for me,” Jacobs said in a statement. “As I prepare to embark on production, I am happy and relieved to know that French Exit will ultimately be in their hands.”
The film, about a penniless Manhattan socialite who moves to a small apartment in Paris with her son and cat, stars Oscar nominees Michelle Pfeiffer (Love Field) and Lucas Hedges (Manchester by the Sea).
Written by award-winning Canadian novelist Patrick deWitt, the comedy-drama is based on deWitt’s international bestselling book by the same name.
“French Exit is the fresh, distinctive screenplay we’ve been looking for all year,” added Sony Pictures Classics. “This promises goldmine performances from Michelle Pfeiffer and Lucas Hedges.

“The Upside,” a feel good film about the bond that forms between a wealthy quadriplegic and his caretaker, scored a surprising box office victory last weekend. The movie had to overcome a series of obstacles and setbacks before it topped charts.
In the weeks leading up to the drama’s release, star Kevin Hart had been the subject of countless headlines analyzing whether or not the comedian will host this year’s Oscars. The entertainer was offered the gig, but quickly stepped down after controversy sparked over homophobic jokes he made in the past. A little unwanted press, however, is nothing compared to the turmoil leading up to the movie’s theatrical debut.
Its rocky gestation to the big screen makes “The Upside,” which doubled industry expectations with a $19.5 million opening weekend, all the more impressive. An English-language remake of the French hit “Les Intouchables” was first announced in 2011, and...

While it can already feel like all of your favorite actors have found their way into the McU in one way or another, Marvel continues to find ways to add new A-list talent to their ever expanding universe. The latest to join their ranks is Michelle Pfeiffer in Ant-Man and the Wasp as the original Wasp who has been lost to the Quantum Realm.
Pfeiffer first appeared in various television shows in the early 1980s, such as Delta House, B.A.D. Cats, and Fantasy Island. She had a breakout role in 1982's cult hit Grease 2, but it was really her part in 1983's Scarface (below) that put her on Hollywood's A-list.

She would go on to be nominated for Academy Awards for 1988's Dangerous Liaisons, 1989's The Fabulous Baker Boys, and 1992's Love Field. That same year, she...

Michelle Pfeiffer’s new film “Where is Kyra” has been getting strong reviews for the actress and marks the first time in many years that she has had a leading role in an awards caliber feature film. Pfeiffer plays an unemployed woman desperately trying to survive while she cares for her sick mother.
Pfeiffer has had a nearly 40-year career on screen and has managed to overcome being known at first just for her looks. While her beauty was prominently on display in many of her first roles she quickly became more than just a pretty face and plunged herself into deeper and more complex roles. Pfeiffer’s first professional acting job was on a TV series version of the film “Animal House” called “Delta House.” Her character on the TV show was referred to simply as “The Bombshell.” This debut hardly signaled the arrival of an actress good enough...

Did you know the earliest Oscar year which boasts 20 acting nominees who are still with us is 1992? It's the 25th anniversary of that year and that's the furthest back in time you can go from which all the acting nominees are still walking this earth. With the very noticeable exception of long retired Gene Hackman (no one has been able to convince him to come back to the movies -- and directors have tried!) most of them are still working, too. The lesson is simple: cherish your favorite actors while they're with us because no one lasts forever... except through their art!

The 1994 film Blue Sky is something of an anomaly from the mid-90s. Filmed in 1991, it would be the last film feature of British auteur Tony Richardson’s career, who had been working in television for several years prior, ever since his coolly received 1984 adaptation of John Irvine’s The Hotel New Hampshire. Then, due to the bankruptcy of Orion Pictures, the film’s distributor, the final product was shelved for three years, at long last released in the autumn of 1994, going on to snag actress Jessica Lange her second Academy Award. Now, twenty years later, it’s a prestige that would seem near impossible to attain for a feature treated to the same fate in today’s market. This distinction potentially sets the film up for failure, which perhaps explains the lack of continued enthusiasm surrounding it.

Like most Americans living today, I was born after November 22, 1963, so I don't remember John F. Kennedy and can't tell you where I was when news broke of his assassination. So here's what I know about the man, his presidency, and his death, thanks to the history professors of Hollywood.
Let me see if I have this right: JFK was a handsome man with the charisma of a movie star. (Indeed, he had connections to Hollywood through his father, a onetime movie producer; through his brother-in-law Peter Lawford and fellow Rat Packer Frank Sinatra; and through his torrid affair with Marilyn Monroe.) Through his youth, good looks, charisma, and forward-looking rhetoric, he inspired a nation to stop wearing hats, build rockets to the moon, and join the Peace Corps. In a scene in 2000's "High Fidelity," Jack Black and Todd Louiso's record store clerk characters are coming up with a list of the top five songs about death. Black mentions "You Can't Always Get What You Want," but Louiso reminds him that the song was used in "The Big Chill." "Oh, God, you're right," says Black, and the song is disqualified.
That's how toxic "The Big Chill" was to popular culture -- so much so that even unassailable items that preceded it, like the Rolling Stones classic, were tainted by association.
It's true, of course, that "The Big Chill," released 30 years ago this month (on September 28, 1983), touched a huge raw nerve in the culture and became an enormous mainstream hit as a result. It's also true that it's a very enjoyable movie, full of witty and truthful moments in well-wrought performances by a stellar ensemble of then-rising stars.

In the hall of fame of superhero/villain catchphrases “oops” (Anne Hathaway, The Dark Knight Rises) never stood much of a prayer against “me-ow” (Michelle Pfeiffer, Batman Returns), nor could the dark side self importance of 2012’s “there’s a storm coming Mr Wayne” ever best the sexier playful 1992 ‘dark side?’ retort “no darker than yours Bruce” But catch phrases aren’t everything...even when you've got zingy ones like "life's a bitch now so am I" In the great Catwoman wars of popular culture, it’s always in some ways a draw. Every generation and every aesthetic gets their own James Bond and so it goes with all enduring characters which win several iterations. For 20 years Michelle Pfeiffer was a constant presence on the big screen. She was nominated for three Oscars (for "Dangerous Liaisons," "The Fabulous Baker Boys" and "Love Field") and starred in big hits including "Batman Returns," "What Lies Beneath" and "Dangerous Minds." And then, after 2002's "White Oleander," Pfeiffer stepped back from stardom to focus on her family. She lent her voice to an animated "Sinbad" movie, starred in a romantic comedy with Paul Rudd that went direct-to-video ("I Could Never Be Your Woman") and didn't return to theaters until 2007's "Hairspray" and "Stardust." She hasn't dramatically ramped up her...

Jennifer Lopez, What to Expect When You’re Expecting Still going strong, The Avengers is on its third weekend out. Yet, the domestic box office is expected to be down 18% compared to last year because of three weak new entries: Peter Berg / Taylor Kitsch’s megabudgeted Battleship barely managed to stay afloat on Friday, while Sacha Baron Cohen‘s The Dictator (which opened on Wed.) and Kirk Jones’ all-star ensemble (Jennifer Lopez, Cameron Diaz, Chace Crawford, etc.) What to Expect When You’re Expecting performed below expectations. [See Box Office: Battleship bombs.] The Dictator grossed an estimated $5.5m at 3,008 theaters on Friday, for an expected weekend total of $16m, as per Deadline.com. Sacha Baron Cohen’s R-rated comedy will thus reach a cume of $23m after five days. For comparison’s sake, Bruno — which was considered a major box-office disappointment following Borat — opened with $30.61m on its first weekend out in July 2009. Supporting Baron...

Dark Shadows: Michelle Pfeiffer in the old Joan Bennett role, Elizabeth Collins Stoddard Unlike Joss Whedon / Chris Evans / Chris Hemsworth’s The Avengers, Tim Burton / Johnny Depp’s Dark Shadows isn’t about to break any box-office records. The latest Burton / Depp collaboration — also featuring Michelle Pfeiffer and Chloë Grace Moretz — opened with a disappointing $9.72m (including $550k from Thursday midnight screenings) at 3,755 North American locations. Dark Shadows is expected to finish its first domestic weekend with $27-28m — or less than the amount ($29.1m) The Avengers earned on its second Friday out. [See also The Avengers Movie to Break Another box-office Record?] Dark Shadows distributor Warner Bros. had been expecting at the very least a $35m opening weekend. Burton and Depp’s previous collaboration, Alice in Wonderland, debuted with $116m in March 2010. In fact, even Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, which scored $9.3m on opening weekend in December 2007, sold more tickets than Dark Shadows. Making...

Dark Shadows is expected to finish its first weekend with $28m — the amount The Avengers is expected to earn on its second Friday out.
