Hopper Saves This Low-Class Film
ccthemovieman-14 November 2006
This is a low-class film with low-class, profane characters. Many times that spells death to whether I like the film but in this case, not so. That's because Dennis Hopper (perfect for profane, sick roles) is entertaining and the story moves at a brisk pace. There simply are not any dry spots. I always like to look at Anne Archer, too.

However, you can overdo the swearing, and that's the case here, and the usual modern-day clichés are here (i.e. the police captain fires the cop, who is the hero; Rambo-type action in which the good guys never get hit while the bad guys always do, etc.)

Those things downgrade this film to an average crime movie, which means it's still worth a look - especially if you like Hopper - but rent it before buying it.

hard-boiled B-noir
SnoopyStyle20 July 2018
A contract is put out on hard-boiled police homicide detective Harry 'Nails' Niles (Dennis Hopper) and his partner Jack Willis. Nails survives an ambush but Willis is killed. With vengeance on his mind, Nails searches the L.A. underworld to find Willis' murderers. In between, he has sexual escapades with his ex Mary (Anne Archer).

John Flynn is a B-level crime action director. Nails is a standard hard-boiled detective. He's hard drinking, hard driving, and hard fighting. While Hopper is great at the hard drinking and living, he's not as real in the hard fighting. He's in his 50's but the hard living adds at least another 10 years. There are things that he does well and others that fit less well. There is the prerequisite body double nudity for Archer and also there is old man butt from Hopper. The plot has nothing out of the ordinary. It is somewhat divided in two which feels disconnected. The dialogue can be clunky in its noir writing. This is crime noir at its hard-boiled basic level. I really wish the cinematography is better.

Entertaining Hopper Vehicle
GSK2314 February 2023
I grabbed this because of Hopper and it paid off in that department. However, coming from the director of Rolling Thunder, John Flynn, this felt rushed, disjointed and rather shoddy at times.

We're rather rushed into a situation that leaves hardboiled cop Harry Niles (Hopper) out for revenge over the murder of his partner. The set up was terribly weak and disjointed. Once things got going, however, it all sort of fell into place. Or, once the clunky intro was over, Hopper spread his wings and took over as a lead would wont to do.

Hopper probably improvised some of the better scenes here (the shower scene is nuts!). Remember he did an "Orson Welles" move when he took over Out of The Blue. Still, his input can't really save this film from being a pretty classless affair. The surrounding cast should have been more front and center in the action, but for whatever reason it just fizzles.

The relationship between Niles and his ex (Anne Archer) is almost completely pointless. Niles' roleplaying sexual hijinks are utterly out of character and never once advance the story. It sort of connects Niles to the politician character (Cliff De Young) and his henchman (David Keith), but too just fizzles in the background. But that never builds to anything satisfying.

There's a lot of great manic Hopper moments, but those can only carry the film and audience so far. They definitely carried me to the end of the film! Otherwise, I probably would have turned this off in the first 15 minutes.

Hopper rules!
dtucker8629 September 2001
In Rebel Without A Cause, Easy Rider, Apocalypse Now, Blue Velvet and River's Edge, Dennis Hopper took us to the edge, this time he pushes us over! This man is an amazing actor who brings his trademark intensity to this film. He makes Dirty Harry look like a wimp! This film is a high wire through hell from start to finish and Hopper's performance is what does it. Anne Archer gives a great performance as his long suffering wife and the two have amazing chemistry. One thing that you have to say about Dennis Hopper, he is never boring and always delivers!

A reminder of how bad the 90's really were
tomgillespie200222 July 2013
In the post-The Wire world we now dwell in, we are forced to look upon the action/cop thrillers of the 1980's and early 1990's with somewhat fresh eyes. We now understand how a city is run, and how bureaucracy and politics can stand in the way of, say, the police force, getting their job done. No longer can a leather-jacketed, cocktail-stick chewing cop- on-the-edge cast aside the need of a search warrant and simply kick the door down. It used to be that as long as he drags out his man either in cuffs or in a body bag, and saves the girl, nobody will care about his disregard for the law, and if they don't, I quote Rambo, "f**k 'em!". But the enlightenment set by The Wire causes something like Nails, a made-for-TV, obscure little title probably forgotten by whoever has actually seen it, to fall from 'terrible' or 'run-of-the-mill', to 'outright laughable' due to it's complete lack of procedural logic and sense.

'Good cop with a bad attitude' Harry 'Nails' Niles (Dennis Hopper) and his partner Jack (Earl Billings) are lured into a trap by some gangsters, leaving Jack dead and Harry mourning. Getting no help from his police department, of which none attend Jack's funeral, Harry decides to use his street know-how to scour the criminal underworld of L.A. in search of vengeance. He discovers a dirty trail full of conspiracy and possible police cover-up that seems to lead all the way up to rich slumlord Noah Owens (Keith David), who is helping fund a Senator's campaign run. Battling alcoholism and a very bad temper, he must also try and win back his estranged ex-wife Mary (Anne Archer) before the gangsters get to her too.

I would probably have never even been aware of this film's existence had it not been for the poster in some cinema magazine or other back in 1992. My brother and I remembered it due to the hilarious title and equally hilarious tagline, so the temptation to actually go ahead and watch this proved too much. It's not quite as bad as I was expecting, given Hopper's energetic, but hardly convincing, performance at least managing to keep me half-interested. Common in early 90's movies, the technical aspects of the film are dreadful, and the action scenes are dull, with a few car chases and machine gun fights scattered throughout. It's so full of plot holes and weird narrative twists (Harry is paying his ex-wife, who is an important member of the Senator's campaign trail, for sex) that is best experienced on full mental shut-down, or else you're in danger of throwing things at the screen. Befitting of its obscurity, and a reminder of how bad the 90's really were.

Low Quality Is Immediately Apparent.
rsoonsa23 July 2005
Dennis Hopper is properly designated as a film personality rather than as an actor because he essentially plays himself, regardless of role requirements, and as with most performers of that type, Hopper is seldom able to rise above the quality of his material; therefore, when a production is as poorly written as in this instance, it can be no surprise that his showing is preordained to be awkward, at best. As action opens, a contract hit is being arranged to dispose of veteran Los Angeles Police Department homicide detective Harry "Nails" Niles and his partner Jack, and while it is never explained why, it is possibly not worth knowing and, soon after, the two whiskey swilling (while on duty) lawmen are uncannily duped into an ambush which they stupidly abet by not requesting assistance, Jack thereby being gunned down. This naturally disturbs Niles who, still in clothing saturated with Jack's blood, meets with his estranged wife (Anne Archer) for a session of role playing sex, after which he grimly proceeds to locate his ex-partner's killer, additionally discovering in the process a large-scale heroin smuggling operation, and whereas his investigative methods are brutal, there is no longer a question of their appropriateness, due to his suspension from duty. Shot atmospherically by cinematographer Mac Ahlberg in Los Angeles and Santa Monica, and smoothly edited by Michael Knue, the film's screenplay reveals a complete lack of knowledge regarding policing procedures along with wholesale failings in logic, and while many of the supporting cast are clearly enjoying their turns, acting honours go to Cuban Tomas Milian as a detective nearing retirement cajoled into aiding Niles, an ably created part but not nearly enough to save this poorly directed and scripted affair.

Dumb cops vs. Dumb crooks
susansweb19 August 2001
The brief view: Anne Archer - wooden as ever. Dennis Hopper - over the top as usual, it almost pathetic to see him resort to all of the cliche'd devices of a so-called out of control cop. Companion movie to Hopper's "Backtrack", both of which are awful.

Nails might be THE classic example of the Cop On The Edge movie.
tarbosh220007 December 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Harry "Nails" Niles (Hopper) is an LAPD homicide cop - and perhaps the ultimate Cop On the Edge! While his clueless co-workers call him a "dinosaur", Nails' old-school ways get results, and you don't want to get on his bad side. But that's just what happens when a gang of Cuban drug dealers kills Nails' beloved Black Partner, Willis (Billings). Nails goes after them with a vengeance, turning L.A. upside down in the process. Not just to avenge Willis, but to settle some of his unfinished business as well. Willis, before his untimely death, was "working on something big" - and it just may be a criminal conspiracy that goes all the way to the top! Now back with his old partner, Herrera (Milian), Nails, in his own inimitable fashion, tries to find out how Congressman Stambusky (De Young) and his cohort Noah Owens (David) are involved. And all this while he tries to reconnect with old flame Mary (Archer). Will the bad guys get NAILED once and for all? Nails is a killer Cop On The Edge movie, and getting Dennis Hopper to play him was an inspired choice. This movie truly is Hopper at his absolute best - his energy, charisma and likability carry the film. He's angry and drinking from the get-go, just as it should be. Just why this L.A. cop has a Southern accent is never explained (or ever mentioned) but it's all part of the fun. But it's not all violence and darkness, there's some nice humor as well and Hopper give the Nails character charm, in his own unique way. It's almost weird James Ellroy wasn't involved with this project, it's almost like Dark Blue (2002) or Street Kings (2008) in its approach, before those movies came on the scene.

You really have to enjoy cop drama/thrillers (and preferably have seen a lot of them) to properly appreciate Nails. It has just about every cliché you can name - and as we always say, that's not a bad thing and we need these clichés for our entertainment purposes. The Black partner who's close to retirement, the drug deal gone wrong, the abandoned warehouse, the WYC (White Yelling Chief), the WYC who demands our rogue cop hand in his badge and gun, the echoey guitar riffs on the soundtrack during chases/tense scenes, and of course the Cop On The Edge itself, and so much more. Those of you out there that enjoy these things, like we do, will have a feast here. The movie gets further bonus points for being about dyspeptic middle-aged people, not stupid, flashy kids, there's a lot of un-PC dialogue, there's no stupid little kid to ruin things, and, the original foodie, Herrera is always seen eating. Usually a burrito. If you don't like it, take it up with Harry Niles.

We should take a moment here to recognize the unheralded genius of director John Flynn. It's an absolute tragedy that he's not a household name, yet plagiarists like Tarantino are. Besides directing the early Seagal in Out For Justice (1991), he also did Lock Up (1989) with Sly, the underrated James Woods vehicle Best Seller (1987), and the Jan Michael Vincent movie Defiance (1980). But the Coup De Grace is that he directed one of the best movies ever, Rolling Thunder (1977). If he directed nothing else but that in his career, he would be a legend in our eyes. But his career making tough, interesting fare speaks for itself. Back to the cast, Milian is likable as Herrera, Archer does well in a somewhat thankless role, Keith David fits the bill perfectly as Owens, and Cliff De Young, interestingly enough, plays a guy named Stambusky, which, though different, today has connotations of a certain child molester that are hard to ignore.

Featuring an end credits song by Eddie Money, Nails might be THE classic example of the Cop On The Edge movie. We say see it soon.

The most formulaic cop movie I've ever seen
Pardolii29 December 2005
This was the most clichéd and predictable cop/tough-guy/partner movie ever made. The throw-away films of Norris, Van Damme, Seagal, Stallone, and Schwarzenegger have plots that seem labyrinthine compared to this.

Starting with the film title, "tough" sounding nickname/surname, if you can think of a cliché in an action movie, it is used in this one. It just seems that Larry Ferguson farmed the writing out to a first year class studying film conventions and plot telegraphing. Cookie-cutter main character? Check. Partner? Check. Superior? Check. "I'll get you yet" rival of main character? Check. Villain? Check. Storyline? And how!

Hopper should have let this one pass him by.

I really enjoyed it but....
mbs29 January 2018
Its every single cop movie cliche in existence...but Dennis Hopper is pure entertainment here. The plot is Hopper's trying to get the guys who kill his partner in the first five minutes of the movie. There's apparently a hundred plus bad guys that Hopper has to go thru in order to find the responsible party. Along the way, you get to see Hopper do thinks like: he puts a bad guy's head into a big huge bowl of shrimp that he's gobbling down, at another point he runs to catch a bad guy who's climbed onto the back of an escaping truck and of course Hopper catches him and pulls him off the truck and beats the crap out of him. Oh and there's the scene where attacked by drive by gunfire while in the bathtub with his dog Hopper grabs his gun and runs out of his house after the bad guy while stark raving nude. (shrugs) I had fun watching it. Its a very enjoyable hour and a half if you like Hopper. (and who doesn't like Hopper come on now!!!) Also Keith David is in it and the end credits song is by Eddie Money! How can you go wrong??? You can't--He's Nails!!!!

Dirty Cliche in LA
arthur_tafero9 November 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I like Dennis Hopper, but this film has more cliches than a class reunion. How did the talented writer for this film come up with such a creative story? I mean a cop's partner is killed and now he wants revenge. What a great idea for a movie!!! So original!!. Oh wait. It's not original; its a cliche. The production values are amateurish; you can actually see the boom come down for the sound at about the hour mark in a conversation between Nails and a shady former cop. Some of the action scenes are laughable as well. Dennis tries his best, but he cant save this turkey. And he is better as a bad guy, anyway. Save your time and money

Great and enjoyable action movie that is criminally underrated
bellino-angelo201422 February 2021
I came by casually with this movie when I decided to watch various movies with Keith David (who has one of the best voices ever heard on film) and when I arrived to this one I thought I would have hated since it has a pathetic score of 5,1 but instead, I ended up loving it very much. And I think it's criminally underrated especially here!

Harry Nails (Dennis Hopper) is a though Los Angeles cop that when he goes investigating one night with his partner has his partner killed. Furious about what happened, he is recommended by his superiors to take a little vacation as they think that he might be stressed, but he refuses. Nails instead goes on a rampage towards all the criminals and their co-horts and he won't stop at nothing for having justice served (and he won't take a NO for an answer). He would also manage to expose the corrupted nature of his former colleague.

This is a great action movie despite it's a made for TV one. It has lots of chase scenes (including with cars), shootouts, fistfights, places trashed around... you can't get better than this one! I was surprised at how many twists and turns were as the bad guys were real jerks.

Dennis Hopper steals the show in every scene he's in as the tough cop Harry Nails, who has a ruggedness a bit reminiscent of Clint Eastwood in his prime and I really loved his performance. I thought that his treatment towards those scumbags was necessary. The supporting cast is full of then unknwon faces that soon become famous as they were more active in movies: John Hawkes, Keith David, Jay Acovone and even Danny Trejo as a barman were quite a surprise to watch. And the soundtrack was very funky in some points.

If you ever have a chance to watch this movie... watch it at all costs! It's a great action movie that fans of the genre will enjoy and it's not like your typical made for TV movie. When it was over I thought ''why they didn't released it in theaters?'' because I think that if it was released in theaters it could have today a much higher score and more reviews.

In like Flynn again, with a Hopper nailing performance
videorama-759-8593913 April 2017
Nails is one of those good b film's, you pass in the video shop, and not give it a fair hearing. At the advice of my half brother, I decided to rent this very good actioner, made by a director, whose films I really like, Rolling Thunder being a favorite of mine. In this wild cop tale, kick arse cop, Hopper, who like Devane, or more so Seagal, is on a trail of hot revenge. In a double hit, half gone right, thanks to Hopper's survival, where him and his late partner (Earl Billings- One False Move) are set up, a maddened Hopper vows revenge, against his slain partner, and it's his character which is beautifully and excitingly delivered, that makes this film fun. By the way he acts, it's hard to believe that he actually is a cop. Harry Niles, (Hopper) is a loose cannon, but you love em' none the less. His older veteran partner/best friend (Milan) is a Mexican food lover, like me, where I got hungry watching him eat all the type. Some actors who show up in the film, you aren't surprised to see, or to see why they were cast. Political ties are brought into the story too, bigger bad asses, higher up. Though Cliff De Young, a corrupt campaigner, didn't really do anything for me here, his idol, Keith David an ex con who's now being elected mayor was much more effective, his nasty angrily smiling, sitting profile, a haunting shot etched in my mind. where especially, in a film like this, you wouldn't expect an open ending, where there's a lot more unfinished business between Hopper and him. Hopper's wife's (Archer) life is made very difficult, as unfortunately she works (you guessed it?) for De Young and cronies. With a cool upbeat soundtrack in the end credits, Nail's is not a badly formulated movie, although it's not without faults. It's kind of smart in bits too, the ambush in the opening, for starters, but congrats really go to Hopper, for forming just a exciting, entertaining, laughable and likable character, not the first movie, where he's acted like a kid, the revenge potboiler Boiling Point, was another one that sprung to mind. His partner, Milan is another asset. Watch for a younger John Hawkes, in a small but memorably great role, as antique thief, where Hopper busts up the joint, declaring, how he loves animals to people. It'd be great in reality, if they're were more Harry Nile's in the world. Things would get done more properly.

a real very good movie with a superstar : Denis Hopper
I want you to view it and not listen those who are turning down such a thriller. I have seen thousands of movies and this is in the top 10%. He is in shape and when he runs, you really feel he hates the mobs. He also comes out is residence naked running after another mob! There is action all the time. You have to be spoiled at an unseen level to feel cheap-mind in turning down such good classic movie of good and bad with a spicy outraged cop! Every movie of that caliber merits some attention and a more balanced judgment. Have a good time fellows! xx xx xx xx xx xx

One of the worst I've ever seen
millennia-226 June 1999
Nails is one of those movies that since it's made for TV, then no one can see how bad two big stars can be. Dennis Hopper and Anne Archer should have known better. Hopper was in a pre-Speed slump and had I seen this stinker first, then I would've never seen Speed (What a mistake that would've been). I was suprised at the level of violence and language used in this movie. Never would I have believed that it could've made it to TV like this.

+ (GOOD THINGS) 1.) The car chases 2.) The opening credits

  • (BAD THINGS) 1.) The sets (ugh!) 2.) Hopper's performance 3.) The script 4.) The direction 5.) Archer's performance

Best 90s Renegade Cop
office_icarus2 May 2023
Deplorable this property has yet to be properly telecined (w exception of long out-of-circulation German DVD); still only accessible via used VHS cassette tapes. Infinitely better than Striking Distance (1993) or Boiling Point (1993). Nails is director John Flynn's Vice Squad (1982).

Fantastic casting; everyone steps up here - with Hopper eclipsing his crazy-mad Texas Chainsaw Massacre II (1986) performance. The narrative is not without its flaws and could have benefitted with an additional 12 - 20 minutes breathing room. Nails is still easily one of the best renegade cop flicks of the 90s, alongside China O'Brien (1990) imho.

Good from afar, Far from good

Yes, this movie has its faults, BUT, if you just want to have a good time, see some nakedness and generally enjoy life, Nails isn't a bad way to go. Its got some flashbacks, some guy showering with a dog, and various other interesting scenes. Hey, we can't all be perfect and for those of us who are far from that, Nails was made.
