Miyazaki’s Swan Song A Somber Flight Of Fancy
Earlier this month, legendary animator Hayao Miyazaki, writer and director of such masterpieces as Spirited Away, Castle in the Sky and My Neighbor Totoro, announced his final retirement (this isn’t his first). How fitting that his final feature takes up his favorite thematic motif, that of magical phenomenon and fantastic human achievement – flight. Oddly, for the first time in his lengthy career, Miyazaki has embraced the more realistic storytelling of his partner Isao Takahata, yet he hasn’t abandoned the lyrically imaginative storytelling he’s known for. With Studio Ghibli’s signature hand drawn and heartfelt feel, The Wind Rises fictionalizes the life of Jiro Horikoshi, the chief engineer behind the famed Japanese Zero fighter jet, and blends his tail with that of Tatsuo Hori, author of the novel from which the film’s epithet originates.

This is a special edition of Short Starts, where we look at the Sundance shorts program class of 1993. 1992 and 1994 are very notable years in the history of the Sundance Film Festival. Mostly for features. In between, the 1993 event should be recognized for its short film program. It was only the second year of this section — though shorts were an increasingly significant part of the fest since 1988 — and it remains, two decades later, probably the most important (if not best) batch of short films to ever come together in Park City. Among the filmmakers receiving their first real notice in this program were Paul Thomas Anderson, Wes Anderson, David Wain, Eugene Jarecki, Tamara Jenkins, Ted Demme, Stanley Tucci (as writer/producer), Gary Fleder, Alex Sichel, Mike Mitchell and animators Eric Darnell and Matt O’Callaghan. Their early works played alongside shorts by Michael Almereyda, Lourdes Portillo and two eventual Oscar nominees, Christian Taylor...

The theme of Monday night’s episode of The Sing-Off is its most impressively vague yet: “My Generation.” Anyone who has never watched this show might think that means the teams will sing songs that they were raised on, or maybe even from the decade they were born, but to those people I would scream, “You’re so wrong!” and “Why aren’t you watching The Sing-Off, do you hate good-natured fun?!” Nick Lachey explains the theme as “the songs of yesterday and today,” which he doesn’t seem to understand means All Of The Days.

Spoiler Alert: In tonight's episode, "The Old Ship of Zion," blues singer Daughter Maitland (Margot Bingham) saved her lover, Chalky, by stabbing Dunn to death before he could choke the life out of his former boss.
He started as a smart-mouthed, jail-cell antagonist in Season Two. Then, after being beaten into submission by Chalky White's "associates," the gold-toothed Dunn Purnsley had worked his way up to become Chalky's right-hand man by the start of Season Four. But as Boardwalk Empire has proved over and over again, no one – be they gangster,...

Three episodes ago, Nucky, after cleaning up Willie's little chemistry mishap, made a prescient remark: "The only thing you can count on is blood." He meant it in the sense of family, but there has been no lack of bloodshed on the boardwalk since then. What Nucky also couldn't foresee was that his comment will ring true for either himself or his nephew – and that the other will learn that loved ones are never to be trusted. Who will "win" and who will "lose" in this scenario remains to be seen,...

HBO on Sunday night debuted the first trailer for True Detective, its new eight-episode drama series premiering in January 2014 and starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson.
Billed as an elevated narrative with multiple perspectives and time frames, the show centers on two detectives, Rust Cohle (McConaughey) and Martin Hart (Harrelson), whose lives collide during a 17-year hunt for a serial killer in Louisiana, with current-day testimony from each framing flashbacks to the investigation.

Siliconera pointed to the super anime/manga crossover, which will bring together heroines from ten series in a strategy RPG for the PS3 and Vita.
According to the post, "Super Heroine Chronicle" will be a traditional grid-based game, and its heroines will be capable of attacking enemies in adjacent squares while also doling out damage to the environment.
A roster of unannounced characters from the following series would be included in the likely cel-shaded game:
Twin Angel
Kyousogiga
Di Gi Charat
Swan Song of the Valkyries: Symphogear
Super Sonico
Higurashi When They Cry
Aria the Scarlet Ammo
Infinite Stratos
The Familiar of Zero
Dream Hunter Rem
With the exception of "When they Cry," I'm not all that familiar with the other series being used for "Super Heroine Chronicle," but I'm sure each has its own disturbingly rabid fanbase. Huh. The "Alice in Wonderland" riff "Kyousogiga" sounds look a hoot, though.

A couple months ago, CultureCatch posted a One-Take acoustic performance by Anna Rose. It's good in its own intimate way, but it doesn't come close to suggesting the power she wields when playing with her band -- power that was on full display at Rockwood last week.
Singing and, for a while at least, playing rhythm guitar, Rose was backed by a tight trio of lead guitarist Tyler McDiarmid, bassist Jamie Bishop, and drummer Jordan Pearlson. The general mood of the evening was set on the first song, an ominous, droney tune with a minor-chord progression over which McDiarmid played a bright arpeggio figure and Rose's low-register, bluesy, vibrant vocals cut through. After a bridge that expanded the chord palette, McDiarmid unleashed a wah-wah solo, but everything was concise. The next song was the one in that One-Take, "Show Me Your Hands," but here built on a gritty blues-rock riff.

It sounds like Detective Ryan is doing some undercover work in the next episode. What can you tell us about that?
So basically, before Kevin Ryan was a homicide cop he was a narcotics cop and one of things that he did was go undercover. It was sort of one of these things were he spent 14 - 15 months in the Staten Island mob, gaining their trust. Getting to know people and getting people to trust him.

Since Kevin managed to finally decipher his half of the demon tablet, along with several other factors, the existence of an angel tablet, as revealed by Samandriel to Crowley, has remained a backburner piece of information, especially since the Winchesters continue to remain unaware of its existence. Its importance, however, has not been diminished as a result, and it was inconceivable to imagine that Crowley was not searching for it with fervour, especially since he has lost possession of both Kevin and the demon tablet. The presence of, and search for, the angel tablet thus roared back to the front of the line in this week’s episode, in a solid episode that brought back many key recurring players, and...

Well here we are: Steven Soderbergh has graced us with his final theatrical film effort, with Beyond the Candelabra signing his career off on HBO later this Spring. You wouldn’t be able to tell from looking, as he leaves everything on the field with Side Effects. Be it the cinematography, the performances, even the musical score; everything seems to oppress and sedate in this film, and only to the story’s advantage. When first announced, people were expecting a film more like Contagion, which was also written by Scott Z. Burns. This film is not anything like Contagion in the sense that instead of putting social relevance and verisimilitude to the forefront, Soderbergh wants to leave us entertained and thrilled. Side Effects delivers on both fronts, and then some.
Dr. Jonathan Banks (Jude Law) works hard at what he does in the field of Psychiatry.

"And after tonight, I'll make a bracelet out of Cindy's clavicle."
Once again the Dream Team has come up short, but there's no denying that Cindy was a major part of them being the losers the last three weeks, so it was time for her to go. One thing I've noticed since the Team Season began is that we've had very little chance to get to know any of the designers individually, so it's hard to root for anyone yet. But I was rooting for Cindy because her story (Funeral home owner turned later in life fashion designer) was at least something to grasp on to. Now I guess I'll have to settle for Cutie Matthew or the Stanford Blatch-esque Joseph.
This week, the teams have to design commercial and press looks for Heidi's "Surprise" fragrance. Yes, it's another Heidi challenge.
Here are the 5 most memorable moments.

The balance of episodes varies so much in terms of weightiness and symbolism, humor and continuity, although almost all of them are excellent. I will say I haven't been this shaken up by an installment since Season 8's memorable "Swan Song."

I was fortunate to read a small mountain of amazing fiction in 2012, but 2013 has the potential to top it with ease. In addition to the books listed below (which I would not be surprised to find sitting in my Top 10 at year’s end), there’s plenty of stuff coming by authors I’ve just discovered, not to mention all of the surprises that the year no doubt holds. In other words, we’ve got a lot to look forward to – here’s just a taste of what I’m anticipating as the new year approaches.
NOS4A2 by Joe Hill (April 30) (William Morrow)
Joe Hill continues to solidify his voice with each passing project, and what I’ve read about NOS4A2 leads me to believe he’s fully embracing his horrific roots while putting his own gleeful spin on the genre’s tropes. The book is about Charlie Manx,...

Is Chuck Shurley god? The jury is still out on that Supernatural question. And by Supernatural, yes, I do mean the hit CW series. What isn’t supernatural is Chuck’s new role. Well, Chuck isn’t playing anyone. He’s fictitious. But the actor who plays him, one Rob Benedict, is now headed to the set of The Mentalist on CBS.
You know you want to say it. He lives!
According to EW Benedict has landed the guest role of Paul Friedman, an adjunct college professor and PhD candidate who seems to be dedicated to the sciences. Friedman works at the same lab as did a recent murder victim. So, you can imagine that the Cbi will have some questions for him during their investigation.
The episode, where Benedict puts in his guest appearance is titled “Red in Tooth and Claw,” and it will premier in mid-February.

We speculated earlier this week about whether this year's Glee Christmas episode would top "Extraordinary Merry Christmas." The answer, amazingly was a resounding "No."
If that wasn't an hour-long commercial for the Glee Vol. 3 holiday album, I don't know what was. Why couldn't this just have been an hour-long music special with the cast and characters singing songs and spouting pithy one-liners? Oh, wait.
Glee really should have quit for the season while it was ahead last week with "Swan Song."
"Glee, Actually" was completely all over the place, calling for the suspension of any and all disbelief regarding how absolutely everything in the real world works. And I'm not even talking about the opening 9-minute dream sequence which might have been the best part of the entire night simply for the fact that Kevin McHale got to ditch Artie's wheelchair and glasses and dance. Oh look, Rory the Leprechaun...

"Glee" rarely tries to avoid controversy. On the contrary, the musical-comedy-drama-whatever often seems to revel in edgy positions designed to push boundaries. But "Glee" doesn't always hit exactly the right notes when pushing our buttons.
Brittany's (Heather Morris) mention of the "lesbian blogger community" in last week's "Swan Song" episode may have been one of those off-notes.
First of all, a disclaimer: I barely knew there was an issue brewing on this topic before "Swan Song" aired. Brittany's line -- mentioned to put off Sam (Chord Overstreet) when the boy professed his love for her -- struck me merely as a feeble attempt at some meta-comedy. It wasn't particularly funny, but I let that pass in favor of other complaints I had with the episode as a whole.
If you missed the line even more profoundly than I did, here is Brittany's explanation:
"It's like, all the lesbians of the nation,...

AfterElton readers know what's Hot in Hollywood. We're a community of voracious yet discerning pop culture consumers, so when it comes to TV, movies, web series and celebrities... tourniquet be damned, our finger is on the bloody pulse! This year in our first annual Hot in Hollywood poll our readers cast over 800,000 votes (yes, you read that correctly) crowning winners in 21 different categories, everything from Favorite Movie Beefcake to Guilty TV Pleasure to Child Actor We Don't Hate.
There were some tight races (Favorite Web Series, Favorite TV Beefcake and Greatest TV Villain) and a couple gimmes (Teen Wolf obviously had a lock on Favorite TV Sidekick), but the big surprise was how evenly distributed the love was. No single TV or film project took home more than one or two awards.

Browncoats unite ... again!
Nathan Fillion will be joined by another one of his "Firefly" co-stars on "Castle": Gina Torres is guesting in this season's 14th episode, reports TVLine.
Torres, who now plays the icy, shrewd managing partner of a high-powered law firm on "Suits," will square off against Castle and Beckett (Stana Katic) as a devious fashion mogul. Her character, Samantha Foster, also happens to star on a "Real Housewives"-type reality show. (Fingers crossed for more "Swan Song"/"Spinal Tap" on-camera hilarity!)
Last season, "Firefly" alum Adam Baldwin also paid a visit to "Castle." His episode was packed full of Browncoat Easter eggs, so expect more winks when Captain Tightpants reunites with his second-in-command.
What other "Firefly" actors would you like to see on "Castle"?...

Every week, ETonline selects a scene that is so magical, it demands watching, and re-watching, from fans and non-fans alike. This week, that honor goes to Glee!
Video - Kate Hudson is 'All That' on Glee
In Thursday's episode, titled Swan Song, Rachel Berry was gifted one of 10 Golden Tickets to perform at Nyada's elite Winter Showcase and the audience was gifted with a pair of performances that were richer than Willy Wonka's most decadent delights.
Audio - Exclusive First Listen To Glee's Jingle Bell Rock
While Lea Michele's once-in-a-lifetime talent has never been in question, it's felt like eons since Glee focused its lens on Lea, and just let the camera roll. The chills begun quickly into her first song, Being Good Isn't Good Enough by Barbra Streisand, and had developed into full body goosebumps by the time she hit Holy Night as an encore.

"Let's just enjoy this week and look forward to our big comeback next year." - Finn I've reached a point with "Glee" where even when I enjoy a lot of things about an episode -- as I did with "Swan Song" -- it doesn't matter. The recent string of unbearable episodes has completely severed my connection to the show (a connection that survived through Season 2 and Season 3), possibly for good. It'll take a lot more than a halfway decent episode to bring it back, and I just don't see that happening given the current state of the show. Before...

Tonight's Glee featured the much-hyped and/or much-dreaded hook-up between Sam and Brittany. It also featured not one, but two fourth wall-breaking moments in which Brittany addressed the concerns of the "lesbian blogging community." Lesbian fan feelings were already at a tipping point leading into the episode — we've received more tips and complaints and pleas for coverage in the past week than ever before about Glee — but the meta weirdness fueled the fire even higher than we anticipated. So, I've asked three of our esteemed writers/vloggers to weigh in on tonight's episode. We are, after all, the lesbian blogging community in question.
Based on the promos you saw and the spoilers you read and the fan reaction around the internet, what were you expecting from "Swan Song"? Was the episode better/worse than you thought it would be?
Elaine Atwell: How 'bout that Lea Michele, everybody?...

Chaos reigns in the show choir world. Evil Sue Sylvester roams the halls of McKinley High. Rachel and Kurt see all of their dreams come true. This is the "Glee" episode they call "Swan Song."
Marley isn't dead, to begin with...
Ok, when did Tina (Jenna Ushkowitz) become the sassy mean girl of New Directions? Because she certainly is here. Granted, her anger is somewhat justified. Marley's (Melissa Benoist) tumble at the end of "Gangnam Style" caused the entire club to rush her back to the practice room for TLC and juice boxes.
This was a mistake. Apparently, the draconian rules of show choir dictate that teams who leave the stage forfeit any chance of a win.
The Warblers have beaten New Directions at Sectionals. The competitive season is over.
Season 1, back again...

A swan song is, by definition, a final public performance or a person's last performance before retirement. Why tonight's episode of Glee was titled "Swan Song" is anybody's guess.
Even if the New Directions did lose Sectionals, nothing about tonight said "the end." Tonight was about starting over. Regrouping. New beginnings.
We've debated in recent weeks what the point of Glee is exactly. Is this a show about high school? Or is it a show meant to follow its original cast into perpetuity?
It seemed like the writers were finally trying to tell us what they think Glee is all about.
Rachel: Finn, listen to me. You know, even if we, we never won our Sectionals, or Nationals had never happened, it still would have been worth it. I mean, glee, it's about the love of the music. It's about people like Puck and Artie not just singing together but actually being friends.

I’m going to start this recap by admitting — without any shame whatsoever — that this week’s Glee moved me to tears not once, but twice. And one of those times may have been when the Jewish girl was inexplicably belting “O Holy Night.”
Okay, so we’ve got that out of the way. Whew. And while “Swan Song” was a deeply heartfelt hour that — at times — felt more like a spectacular televised concert than a regularly scheduled episode of Fox’s hit dramedy, it also contained a moment of pure meta hilarity. I speak, of course, of Brittany S.

Whether they were in New York City or Lima, Ohio, our favorite Gleeks were feeling the pressure! After Marley (Melissa Benoist) fainting during New Directions' first number at Sectionals at the end of last week's episode, Glee's Dec. 6 episode, "Swan Song," picked up right where we left off: With total chaos. Was New Directions able to pull it together and prove that the show must go on...even if your female lead can't? In New York, Rachel (Lea Michele) was determined to accomplish something no Nyada freshman has ever accomplished, while Kurt (Chris Colfer) was given a second chance to land a spot in the school. Did the NYC BFFs succeed? And which two glee club members are officially an item?!...

Now that Sectionals have ended, "Glee" only has to deal with the aftermath in "Swan Song." Did New Directions win? Did Marley survive her finale faint? What could possibly be left to sing about.
"Glee" videos have the answers to some of these questions.
Based on these videos, what do we know about "Swan Song"?
Evil Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch), randomly bent on the destruction of the glee club, is back. Wonder what set her off this time?Even though Will (Matthew Morrison) seems to be back in town, Finn (Cory Monteith) is still the driving force behind New Directions. Rachel (Lea Michele) and Cassandra (Kate Hudson) are coming to a head in their ongoing feud.Kurt (Chris Colfer) gets a chance to try out for Nyada and the great Carmen (guest star Whoopi Goldberg).
Want a few more specifics? Scenes from "Swan Song" itself may have those for you.

If we learned anything from Glee's pilot episode (and every episode after), it's that Rachel Berry (Lea Michele) is a star. And as season four rolls on, we see her get closer and closer to her dream of becoming the Broadway sensation she's always wanted to be. But there is one type of validation she needs before that can happen: a golden ticket from Carmen Tibideaux (Whoopi Goldberg). In this exclusive sneak peek from this week's episode "Swan Song," Kurt (Chris Colfer) breaks down the honor of receiving an invitation from Carmen to perform at the Winter Showcase. Apparently, those who get invited have gone on to win every entertainment award, from Emmys to Oscars, yet they still count receiving...

If you thought Sue Sylvester couldn’t aim any lower in her never-ending war against New Directions, think again. In the following, very spoilery clip from this Thursday’s episode of Glee, entitled “Swan Song,” the hard-charging Cheerios coach co-opts the show choir’s high-ceilinged rehearsal space for her own absurd uses, and in the process, defaces the plaque commemorating the work of the group’s late former coach Lillian Adler.
But don’t for a second think Sue is going to claim her new territory without a fight — not while New Directions’ interim advisor Finn Hudson is still able...

You know why we love Glee so much? Because there is nothing that can't be solved with a good old-fashioned dance off! So we are pleased to see that when Cassandra (Kate Hudson) and Rachel (Lea Michele) butt heads yet again in this week's episode "Swan Song", Miss July thinks it's a good idea to compare sexy moves using one of the most classic Broadway numbers of all time: Chicago's "All That Jazz." Rachel is more self-assured and coming into her own at Nyada, and Cassandra wants to test out her student's new found confidence. The gauntlet is thrown with one line: "Show me that I'm not wasting my time." Preview Kate Hudson's steamy moves (and Lea's...

After so much singing at Sectionals, can "Glee" keep quiet in the follow-up episode, "Swan Song"? Nope. Fox has released the audio for five of the episodes songs -- that should make for plenty of music.
Surprisingly, very little of this music hints at the big cliffhanger from last week's "Thanksgiving." If you recall, Marley (Melissa Benoist) passed out right at the end of "Gangnam Style," presumably from starvation and/or pills. The show really does have to address something like that. After all, we don't even know if the girl survives!
Of course she does. This is "Glee," not "The Walking Dead."
Whatever the case, Marley's troubles are not going to be addressed directly in song. What will?
First up, we have Sam (Chord Overstreet) and Brittany (Heather Morris) singing the rather appropriate "Somethin' Stupid." Looks like love may be blossoming between these two blonds.

Castle played one for the band this Monday... at least what was left of it after a member was murdered with his own guitar.
"Swan Song" had our Round Table team of TV Fanatic staffers Jim Garner, Carla Day and Christine Orlando (plus Castle fan Wayne from The 12th Fan Forum) all abuzz, trying to decide if this mockumentary was a hit or a miss.
Read on and weigh in now!

What was your favorite scene from the episode?
Jim: Loved Beckett leading camera crew into closet and sticking her tongue out at them right at the end.
Carla: I'm with Jim. I absolutely adored the final scene with Beckett. I love when she shows her fun side and it was the perfect conclusion to the episode.
Wayne: When Rick and Kate were called into Gates office. They looked like two teenagers being busted by a principal for kissing in school.

ABC’s Castle sang a different tune this week, as the presence of a documentary crew tailing the murder vic’s rock band tweaked the format, and in some cases showed us new, fun sides of familiar characters.
In fact, I wouldn’t question anyone who found this week’s episode as amusing, if not more chuckle-worthy, than the send-up of Comic-Con.
And for good measure, there was a dash of drama toward the end, as Rick and Kate fretted that footage of them sharing a tender, way-more-than-professional moment had made it onto Captain Gates’ DVD player.
As noted above,...
