A spin-off or re-vamping of the sitcom The Torkelsons (1991). Besides the change in setting, the cast also shrank. In "The Torkelsons", there were five children: Dorothy Jane, Steven Floyd, Chuckie Lee, Mary Sue, and Ruth Ann. When they migrated to "Almost Home", there were three: Dorothy Jane, Chuckie Lee, and Mary Sue. No explanation was given for the absence of Steven Floyd and Ruth Ann.
The Torkelsons (1991) was nearly cancelled at the end of the first season, which executive producer Michael Jacobs blamed on NBC's decision to move the show from Saturday nights to Sundays opposite 60 Minutes (1968). Instead of cancelling the show, NBC had it retooled and retitled it Almost Home (1993), which aired on Saturday nights. This revamp was also unsuccessful and NBC officially cancelled the series in the spring of 1993.
This series features cameos from both Ben Affleck (episode four: "Is That All There Is?") and Jared Leto (episode five: "The Fox and the Hound"), who would later go on to play Batman and The Joker in the DC Extended Universe.
