Greg Kinnear will make his Broadway debut as Atticus Finch in Aaron Sorkin’s stage adaptation of the classic Harper Lee novel To Kill a Mockingbird, replacing outgoing star Jeff Daniels in January.
Daniels, who originated the role when the play opened on Broadway in 2018 and returned when the production resumed performances after the Covid shutdown, will make his final appearance as Atticus on January 2. Kinnear begins performances on January 5.
Prior to the shutdown, the role was played by Ed Harris, with Kinnear originally set to take over in spring 2020. That plan was interrupted when the Broadway shutdown commenced in March 2020; Daniels and original cast member Celia Keenan-Bolger as Scout agreed to return to the show for limited engagements upon Broadway’s reopening.
Kinnear’s casting was announced today by producer Barry Diller.
Kinnear was Oscar-nominated for his performance in As Good as It Gets and nominated for two primetime Emmys. After finding initial success as the host of TV’s Talk Soup from 1991-95, he segued to an acting career that included roles in You’ve Got Mail, Mystery Men, Nurse Betty, We Were Soldiers, Auto Focus, The Gift, Someone Like You, Little Miss Sunshine, Baby Mama, and House of Cards. He’ll next be seen opposite Courteney Cox in the Starz comedy series Shining Vale and with Taron Egerton and Paul Walter Hauser in the Apple drama series In With The Devil.

Aisha Tyler has so many reasons why she loves voicing Lana Kane on “Archer,” but her top reason may come as a bit of a surprise. “If I’m being really honest, other than the fact that the scripts are relentlessly hilarious and therefore a joy to say out loud, I don’t have to get dressed up to play Lana Kane. I just go into the booth, in my sweatpants,” she tells us in our recent webchat (watch the video above). But Tyler does have a deep love for Lana and the traits that make up here character. “I love her as a character and she’s a blast to play because she’s obviously tough and funny and flawed and a bad-ass.”

E! is set to revive its talk show comedy roundup series “The Soup” with Brazilian-born comedian Jade Catta-Preta. It’s set to premiere early next year as a weekly half-hour series.
The enduring franchise that began on E! as “Talk Soup” in 1991 features a comedic take on outrageous highlights from daytime talk shows, reality TV series and now viral Internet videos. The series helped turn former hosts Greg Kinnear and Joel McHale into TV stars.
“We’re excited to bring this beloved franchise back to the network, with a new take on an old favorite,” said Rod Aissa, head of production and development for Oxygen and E!. “Jade’s quick wit and keen observations will provide a much-needed voice in today’s pop culture landscape delivered in a way that only ‘The Soup’ can.”
Catta-Preta is billed as a busy comedian based out of Los Angeles who performs in English and Portuguese.

There’s a feeling I always have when I’m watching Greg Kinnear in a movie. He can be a terrific actor. Yet even when he’s just okay, Kinnear seems like such a nice guy that I want him to succeed — I feel almost protective of him, as if he were my little brother. That more-than-skin-deep geniality is the source of Kinnear’s appeal, going all the way back to his hosting gig on “Talk Soup,” where he had the weird ability to invest even pure snark with good vibes.
Given that, when I watched “Phil,” the first movie Kinnear has directed (he also stars in it), you can bet that the protective impulse was in high gear. Yet “Phil,” I have to report, is one of those precious indie nothings that hits you like dandelion fluff. It’s the sort of film that still has its original, now-changed...

There has always been something rather Hawksian about Steven Soderbergh. Speaking with the French magazine Positif in 1993, Soderbergh actually brought up Howard Hawks, a venerable icon of Hollywood cinema, stating, “The career I would like is John Huston’s or Howard Hawks’s. You know, very varied, many different subjects.” It’s true Soderbergh and Hawks diverge greatly in terms of form—the latter is straightforward, classically composed, no frills; the former is stylish, spontaneous, technically innovative—but their recurring subject matter, with a little stretching, isn’t far removed. Take the focus on working professionals in Traffic (2000), the Ocean’s films (2001, ‘04, ‘07), The Girlfriend Experience (2009), and Magic Mike (2012); though not exactly traditional Hawksian occupations, there is a firm appreciation for a job to do and to be done well. More than that, though, what connects Howard Hawks and Steven Soderbergh is their uniform consistency, not necessarily in terms of year-after-year quantity,...

When audience members cheer during a screening, it’s generally viewed by the show’s creators as a victory. But when this happened during the "spanking scene" at the Outlander premiere in New York last week, it gave executive producer Ron D. Moore pause. "It was like, 'I'm not sure that's the reaction I really want them to have. What does that mean?!" he told Vulture afterward. "It's like on Talk Soup, when Joel McHale says, 'Think about what you're clapping for.'"Those in the audience who have read the books knew this was coming. Adapted from book one of the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon, the Starz show centers on a World War II nurse who accidentally travels back in time to Scotland in 1743. Where we pick up in the mid-season-one premiere, our heroine, Claire, has disobeyed an order from her husband in 1743 (as opposed to her husband in 1945), Jamie,...

Joel McHale will be dining on “The Soup” for at least two more years. The long-running host has signed an extended agreement to lead the Emmy-nominated live pop culture show through 2016. The deal also extends to McHale’s production company, Free Period Productions, which will give E! first look rights for any non-scripted series ideas. McHale has hosted the show since its 2004 premiere. An earlier iteration, "Talk Soup" ran from 1991 to 2002. "Whether he is entertaining the audience with the best worst of the week or offering up a fresh hit of pop culture on the production development front, McHale is a valued fixture at the network for both his industry know-how and comic relief," said E!'s Jeff Olde in a press release. "On behalf of the network and fans of ‘The Soup,’ we can’t help but smile as we look forward to more years of comedy with McHale.

The Wil Wheaton Project won’t be back for a second season, TVLine has confirmed.
The Syfy series Wheaton described as “Talk Soup for geeks” premiered May 27 and finished its 12-episode first season in mid-August.
Wheaton broke news of the cancellation via a post on WilWheaton.net, in which the Star Trek: The Next Generation alum/Big Bang Theory guest star writes that the network’s executives “just didn’t think we had enough viewers to justify more episodes.”
A Syfy rep confirms to TVLine that the series is cancelled.

Redoing the "Game of Thrones" title sequence in a variety of styles has become a geeky pastime, seemingly, and Wil Wheaton, the former "Star Trek" star and big time geek, has now thrown his hat into the ring with a "Brady Bunch" mash-up that is actually pretty funny and endearing. And you can watch it below!
The clip comes courtesy of his new Syfy series "The Wil Wheaton Project," which apparently is like a super nerdy version of "Talk Soup," with Wheaton standing in front of a green screen and throwing to things (and maybe talking about nerdy news topics, we're not sure). Anyway, as he admits, the "Game of Thrones" opening credits are maybe some of the best in television history but do a crummy job of explaining the complicated interpersonal relationships of the characters... which can obviously be rectified by a "Brady Bunch"-style opening.

Chicago – The actor Greg Kinnear has been known for his neat and tidy image, but never has he portrayed a religious leader. His role as Todd Burpo – a pastor of a church and the father whose son believes “Heaven Is for Real” – brings the energy of spirituality to the movies just in time for the Easter holiday.
Born in small town Logansport, Indiana, Greg Kinnear was the son of a career diplomat, and moved around quite a bit as a child, even living overseas. He is a veteran actor who first came into prominence when he hosted the first version of “Talk Soup” on the E! Network in 1991. Four years later, he made a splashy film debut as David Larrabee in the 1995 remake of Billy Wilder’s “Sabrina,” directed by Sydney Pollack.

This past Sunday saw the season finale of HBO’s True Detective, a show that was hands down one of the best things to happen to television in many years. How do I know this? Well, I know this because it’s one of the rare pieces of entertainment that even internet haters had nothing bad to say about. Now that, my friends, is how you know something is truly remarkable.
While nothing but love and praise was heaped upon the show’s mesmerizing and utterly enthralling first season, that doesn’t mean that fans didn’t have a whole lot of fun with it. So iconic and memorable were so many moments and lines of dialogue throughout the show’s eight episode run that it was inevitable that spoofs, satires and parodies would hit the net in its wake… and boy did they ever.

Zap2it: Since your dramatic roles to date have been in relatively compact story arcs, what do you think about playing one character for an extended amount of time in "Rake"?
Greg Kinnear: It is a different thing than I'm used to, and how I'll like it, I guess I'll find out down the road. So far, I've really enjoyed it, and I think I'll like the idea of returning to a guy who can continue to be explored deeper as the show goes forward.
Zap2it: For someone who didn't have formal acting training, you've had an Oscar nomination for "As Good As It Gets" and an Emmy nomination as JFK in "The Kennedys." How do you assess that?
Greg Kinnear: Well, maybe that gave me courage. Ignorance is bliss. I've never really looked at any of it as a risk. I know at times you're dealing...

With Rake, Keegan Deane enters the growing pantheon on TV antiheroes. A charming, if morally questionable and self-destructive, criminal defense lawyer, he comes to Fox by way of Australia -- where the original drama of the same name premiered in 2010 and is about to kick off its third season. Greg Kinnear tackles the protagonist in his first full-time TV gig since -- can you believe it? -- Talk Soup. But creator Peter Duncan doesn't want viewers to tune in expecting to always root for the leading man. "He's still a charming character and people still love him," Duncan tells

Television largely gave Greg Kinnear his start, and as he returns to it, he's doing something different -- yet something he's been doing a long time.
Staking his claim to fame as a talk show host on NBC's "Later," then on E! Entertainment Television's satirical "Talk Soup" set Kinnear up for an acting career that began in earnest with the 1995 movie remake of "Sabrina." He's kept at that ever since, from his Oscar-nominated turn in "As Good as It Gets" and his Emmy bid for playing JFK in the miniseries "The Kennedys" to his current role as Ron Burgundy's rival in love in the comedy "Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues."
Kinnear remains an actor in tackling TV on a steady basis again. Premiering Thursday, Jan. 23, the Fox drama "Rake" adapts an Australian show by casting him as Los Angeles defense attorney Keegan Deane. When he's not standing up for clients,...

It's hard to compete with Ron Burgundy, but Greg Kinnear is giving it a try.
The former "Later" and "Talk Soup" host turned Oscar-nominated actor (for 1997's "As Good as It Gets") plays the news anchor's (Will Ferrell) romantic rival for Veronica Corningstone (Christina Applegate) -- now married to, and a co-parent with, the career-preoccupied Ron -- in the new movie-comedy sequel "Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues."
"I just worked a few days on it, but it was really fun, a big thrill," Kinnear tells Zap2it. "I got a call from (director and co-writer) Adam McKay when he was starting it up, and he said, 'Hey, ya wanna play this bizarre little shrink?' I said, 'Well, do I get to sit opposite Ron Burgundy? He said, 'Yup.' And I said, 'When do you need me?'

This story first appeared in the Sept. 27 issue of The Hollywood Reporter magazine. Sean Hayes was playing flamboyant sidekick Jack McFarland on NBC's iconic sitcom Will & Grace when he got a call from his college pal Todd Milliner. Could Hayes help him get an audition to fill the host slot left vacant when Hal Sparks departed Talk Soup? Milliner, a teacher with Chicago sketch comedy theater Second City at the time, had made a tape in which he stood naked on the street with a sign that read, "Will Talk for Soup." But the gig ultimately

Greg Kinnear is headed toward his first regular TV gig since hosting E!'s "Talk Soup" in the early 90s. In "Rake," Kinnear plays a brilliant lawyer, who is less than smart with his personal choices. He's got a gambling problem, is in deep with a bookie, falls in love with a prostitute, has a woman who wants him dead and that's only the beginning.
The show has a good pedigree. Based on an Australian show, "Rake" is from director Sam Raimi and one of the creators of FX's "Rescue Me." It also stars Miranda Otto, John Ortiz, Necar Zadegan and Tara Summers.
"Rake" is an hour long, and set for Fox's midseason, Thursday nights at 9 p.m. Et.

Don’t get us wrong — we’ve got no beef with Seth Meyers. His wry delivery is perfect for Saturday Night Live’s Weekend Update, and he’s written plenty of classic sketches, including last fall’s masterful Louie/Lincoln parody.
But when word broke that NBC will supposedly bring in Meyers to host Late Night once Jimmy Fallon decamps for The Tonight Show, we couldn’t help meeting the news with a noncommittal shrug. Sure, he’d be a fine man for the job, and God knows SNL could use some new blood in its writers room. At the same time,...

Before he was an Oscar nominated movie star, Greg Kinnear was best known as the host of E!'s "Talk Soup" and NBC's "Later." Now Kinnear is headed back to TV to tackle his first scripted series role in an American spin on Australian legal dramedy "Rake."
Although there's no network attached to the project just yet, Deadline is reporting that all the major networks and several cable channels are showing interest. Kinnear would star as a womanizing, self-destructive criminal defense attorney with seemingly no moral boundaries.
It can't hurt that "House" executive producer Paul Attanasio is on board to oversee the series, and that "Rake" sounds an awful lot like a legal version of "House." Although he's never been a full-time regular, Kinnear has guest starred on "Friends" and "Modern Family" and starred in the Reelz miniseries "The Kennedys." He earned Emmy noms for both "Modern" and "Kennedys."

ABC has renewed reality series Wipeout for a sixth season when the show will mark its 100th episode. The network didn’t specify whether the obstacle course show will air again in the summer. Jill Wagner will return as co-host after Vanessa Minnillo replaced her in Season 5. Hosting are John Anderson (Espn’s SportsCenter) and John Henson (E!’s Talk Soup), with Wagner co-hosting. The ever popular Big Balls will be back, along with new obstacles and completely redesigned Wipeout Zones. While not as strong in the ratings as it was early in its run, Wipeout is still one of the few broadcast shows that put on some numbers during the summer. ABC boasts that it is the 2011-12 season’s No. 1 show overall for Family Co-Viewing on the major networks (Adults 18-49 watching with Teens and Kids). Wipeout executive producers are creator Matt Kunitz and Scott Larsen. Endemol USA is producing.

From Talk Soup to Friends to the Reelz original series Xiii, Aisha Tyler has almost done it all. In a new clip promoting her new action series, the multi-talented actress talks about why Xiii is her new lucky number.
It's been nice for me because I've been able to play a lot of really smart characters in my television work. I've been really fortunate. Playing interesting, really smart women, especially women in law enforcement has been something I've been able to do and I love those characters.

After the departure of Holly Robinson Peete and Leah Remini, CBS's daytime chatfest "The Talk" needed a little spicing up. That's why the news that all-around funnylady Aisha Tyler is joining comedian Sheryl Underwood and original members Sara Gilbert, Julie Chen and Sharon Osbourne is great for the show.
Why, you ask? Let us outline a few reasons below:
First things first, considering Osbourne is taking on a reduced role this season to spend time with her family, it helps to have another outspoken woman on the panel. Tyler is definitely not shy about sharing her opinions.
Tyler has experience as a host, having headed up E!'s "Talk Soup" from 2001-02, and brings an edgy wit to her role as Lana Kane on FX's animated hit, "Archer."
