Joel McHale is a Stellar Host!
clahners16 February 2008
I don't watch a lot of TV, except for The Office, Weeds, Entourage and E!'s Soup. I think I hold this show in good company.

I love the scathing review of pop culture that this show gives. Soup also helps me stay on top of what people in the office are referring to when talking about a Sanjaya or Heidi Montag (sp?).

The best part is that Soup shows clips of the highlights of these shows, which are usually the funniest or most controversial moments (c'mon, most people get hooked into watching American Idol because of the freak show that are the auditions), which is why most people claim to watch. And that means, I don't have to suffer through the other 98% of these mind numbing talk shows or "reality" shows, for one nugget of "funny" or "shock." The only reason why Soup doesn't get a 10 in my opinion are sometime the sketches are not that funny, and on an even rarer occasion, the commentary isn't always up to par. But they can't all be home runs either, if so, Soup wouldn't be on E!.

Joel's quick wit and Soup's writing team (which includes McHale) make for a great show. I happen to enjoy the laughing and comments from the crew who are off-camera. Even when they're being blatantly obvious by giving occasional courtesy laughs, it's hilarious because it IS forced. They're obviously being ironic. And that's part of what makes this show funny.

What a damn funny show?
bato-211 March 1999
Is it the sarcasm, or is it the images where John Henson makes fun of himself and the celebrities?

Who knows, who cares!!!! This show is reaaaally funny, I watch it every time I can, I specially enjoy when they invite celebrities. 10 out of 10!!!!

By the way, why did Kinnear quit the show? He wasn´t that bad....

The weekend recaps were always the best
kegl911327 August 2007
I can't believe how many people hate Hal Sparks! He was my favorite host of the show, hands down. I hate celebrity gossip and generally dislike talk shows, but when Hal Sparks hosted Talk Soup, it was must see TV for me. I rarely missed an episode during his run, and was saddened when the guest hosts started pouring in (although most of the guests still did a fine job).

Anyway, for all the people who dislike Hal Sparks, I imagine they must have never seen the weekend specials. They were hour long episodes of Talk Soup that comprised the best clips from the entire week, and were padded out by sketch comedy bits. The original bits that Hal Sparks did were hilarious. In one he got possessed by a bad comedy demon, and in an exorcist like scene his head spun as he told dated jokes about airline food. One episode was dedicated to making fun of Multiplicity, as a bunch of cloned Hal Sparks kept multiplying through out the episode, over-running the studio.

OK, maybe these don't sound as funny when I describe them, but all I know is that besides Talk Soup, the only other two shows I watched consistently during those years was The Simpsons and Late Night with Conan O'Brian. So if you like the comedy stylings of those shows, then you'd probably like Talk Soup during the Sparks years.

That said, Henson and Tyler were both great hosts as well. All three hosts brought something different to the table but they were all fine comedians in my opinion. Of course, throughout the Tyler and guest star years, my interest in this show began to wane, but every now and then I catch The Soup, the show's spiritual successor, and sure enough, the new host can bring some pretty unexpected laughs from time to time.

OK, I've wasted enough time talking about a TV show that isn't on the air anymore and on a channel that I generally despise. Go watch something else!

Pretty good celebrity skit show
Catherine_Grace_Zeh24 July 2007
In my opinion, this is a pretty good celebrity skit show. I enjoyed seeing Greg Kinnear as the host. There are many reasons why I said that. Even though Hal Sparks was an okay host, I sometimes wish that Greg Kinnear hadn't left. If you ask me, it seems that nobody stays with a TV show throughout its entire run anymore. Still, I enjoyed seeing the various hosts and other people spoofing celebrities. If you ask me, that was pretty darn funny. Before I wrap this up, I must say that I kind of miss this show. Now, in conclusion, I highly recommend this show to all you die-hard sketch show fans. You will really enjoy it.

Stan Evans is a very talented Actor and Writer
uniinvitationxy5 August 2009
E! TV is a great channel and Talk Soup is so funny,in a flash you can view the episodes change. We want more funny writings by the best writer ever Stan Evans.. The patron Saint of the mindless masses... He is a truly talented, gifted writer, actor, comic, producer, director, and creative consultant.Anna Nicole loved him , but he was not a $$$$Billionaire so he left him for a Billionaire. Many super stars wanted to make films with the actor Stan Evans, who has a "Humphrey Bogart" {Clark Gable}acting style. He should make many more movies. Maybe with Stephen Spielberg, or perhaps many other talented producers. We wish him a moment of FAME with a great fortune to gain. Has he produced any mock-U-dramas? or perhaps any docudrama??? A project about Bernie Madhoff would be a great TV movie written by STAN EVANS. How many screenplays has he written?? Is he under $$$$$$$$$$$$billion contract with Disney?? He should earn more than $50 Million... He could also write a TV movie about the late KING OF POP.. Michael Jackson. We want to view a lot more of and by Stan Evans in the movies and on TV. Thank you so very much. Elvis has left the building!!!!!

This was funny and funky!
aeowen-0339813 August 2018
Flipping through channels one day, I accidentally (and later intentionally) hit the E! Channel and on came a relatively then unknown Greg Kinnear. For 30 whole minutes I could not stop laughing my butt off because my wife was a soap opera nut and this was my perfect foil to her.

Greg went and John "Skunk Boy" Henson came on. So much funnier and just as funkier like before. I kept on picking on my wife as I kept laughing at her expense.

Sadly, once John left and Aisha hosted, I rapidly lost interest. No longer funny and flatlined for me. That was it.

More shows like this need to be repeated again to introduce pure comedic genius. It was a sad day in 2002 when this show ended.

I really miss the laughs.

Stan Evans, senior producer, Emmy Award winning talented writer
fortunarota1423 October 2014
the Emmy award winning writer Stan Evans deserves all the credit and attention just like the celebrities he writes for ( Mark Wahlberg, Steven Spielberg, Oprah, Jerry Springer, cartoon characters, comics, and Talk show hosts, and countless more)and produces movies and various shows. He has moved on to bigger and better projects than "Talk Soup", but he is still connected to E!..We wish him many more projects and hopefully he will be very wealthy. Thanks to all the fans of E! and Talk Soup now in 24 languages and globally. We would like to view many more reality shows produced by senior producer Stan Evans, he is truly a gifted writer, comic, actor, producer and a generous, compassionate human being who has worked for many non profit charities to help the needs of many people. So we hope to watch his new shows.

The Funniest Show On Television!
THX1138-221 March 1999
John Henson and the crew of "Talk Soup" are the funniest bunch of people on TV. They do crazy sketches and make fun of some of the stupidest talk show clips around. Talk shows are horrible -- Talk Soup makes them GREAT!

A show whose time has come and gone
hunterdu6 August 2001
Someone asked why Greg Kinnear quit the show? Um, have you seen where his career has gone since? I think he may have made the right choice to leave Talk Soup on the E! Channel for Academy Award nominations. Yes, he wasn't that bad. In fact, he was by far the BEST host of Talk Soup.

The key was, he got out at the right time. The show doesn't make sense anymore. In the early 90's, talk shows took themselves seriously. Talk Soup made fun of those shows who tried to pass themselves off as serious journalistic shows.

But for the last several years, the talk shows that they are parodying are parodies of themselves. So what is the point? It is not nearly as much fun to laugh WITH a show that knows it is stupid than to laugh AT a show that thinks it is producing quality television.

And what is with incuding just about every show on TV now? The show is called TALK Soup. Funny, I never considered Fear Factor a talk show.

Greg Kinnear was the master of this show, as he also help create the idea. But its time has come and gone now that every show they parody is basically the same thing anyway. Kinnear got out just in time, and I'm sure his bank account thanks him. I think I'd rather be in 'As Good As It Gets' over 'Dude Where's My Car', like Hal Sparks.

Totally lost it after John left
zetes30 April 2001
I started watching this show in 1993, when Greg Kinnear was its host. He was hilarious, and, when I found out he was leaving, I thought it could never achieve its former brilliance. I was wrong, because John Henson was even funnier. Unfortunately, they couldn't afford to pay him more than just peanuts, so he had to take off. They left Hal Sparks, who is not terrible, but is no John or Greg. No matter how much everyone hated Hal, he was far better than any guest host who's ever tried to host, every comedian under the sun, and the cast of Survivor (although I had long since quit watching when they started hosting).

I loved loved loved it
mamamiasweetpeaches31 October 2003
when this show first came out,I never missed it. It would have a host (Greg,Joh,Hal or Aeisha) showing you the highlights...or rather LOWLIGHTS...of everything that had been on the talk shows that day. TALK SOUP was REALLY great if you had been at work and missed the shows. They showed you the wildest sample of the show they could find. (and,remember..this was before any of us had an inkling that the Jerry Springer show was anything but REAL TRUE stories!!!) I never missed an episode. First up was Greg Kinnear who was very cute and charming. You would watch and say "Damn. where can I find me a man like that??" when Greg Left to do movies John Henson took over. At first I wasnt even going to give him half a chance, but after awhile I warmed up to him and realized he was funny. Then HE announced he was leaving to do a show( did he??? I dont remember ever seeing it.) Then Hal Sparks (droooooooooool) took over. And once I warmed up to him and start to think he was cute ..guess what?? HE LEFT!!!(to do Queer As Folk, among other things). By this time I was very upset with the whole franchise. I loved Greg John and Hal and now they were gone. Then they brought a woman in to do the show and it just wasnt the same for me. This show is defunct now, which is a shame, because when it was good it was very good.

Hal Sparks was great
buffbabe2313 June 2001
I started off watching "Talk Soup" with host John Henson. I thought that he was very funny and I thought that the premise of the show was pretty good... Showing the "funny" clips from all of the other daytime and late night shows. I loved John Henson as a host- I never missed an episode. After John Henson left, I expected to hate the next host. After I saw Hal Sparks for the first time, I loved him! Although Hal isn't the same as John, I didn't feel that the show lost anything. I did however feel like the show lost something when Hal left and gave the purple chair (which finally reappeared) over to Aisha Tyler. I now rarely watch the shows and I long to see the episodes with either John or Hal hosting. For those that hated Hal- I read an interview that he did and I agree with him. - John was a guy's guy and Hal was more of a girl's guy. "Talk Soup" is still a show that you should check out sometime.

Laughter beats Drugs
christiantrainer21 November 2005
After being kicked out of the Marine Corp in 1992, I went through a 2 year downward spiral of depression and drug abuse living in cheap motels that had cable TV and the new E! cable station. One thing I will never forget after all the drugs was gone is Greg Kinnear brilliance during the 1992 - 1993 season of Talk Soup. He was truly a master. I never heard of Talk Soup or Greg before I saw him on E! and believe me, Greg wore me out with laughter so hard that it knocked me into sobriety many times. His deadpan humor was not the conventional stuff of comics but on a whole different level altogether. I remember watching him immediately after Ophrah had just interviewed Michael Jackson for a one hour special. Greg ripped into Michael and I loved it along with Michael. Greg was OFF THE HOOK and I never forgot HIM or Talk Soup because of his off beat sense of humor and his take on the insanity of Talk Shows. If Greg hosted that show today, I would watch it because he was so good at examining the ridiculousness of Talk shows. I always said back than that one day, I hoped that I would be able to purchase episodes of Greg when he hosted Talk Soup and I hope that day is soon. Thanks Greg for the fun when my life was miserable - man, you may have "wasted" a lot of the drug I took when i watched you, but I am a happier man for it today. I will never, ever forget that season.

Am I the only one who likes Hal Sparks?
weenyboy31 May 2000
Geez, so many reviews panning this poor fellow. I never cared for John Henson too much, and I thought Hal was a comic breath of fresh air. Yeah, so he is a little more "risque". I LIKE that type of humor, and it does complement the type of clips they tend to show. What is everyone's problem? I think he has a lot of energy and he is very funny. My only question - Where has he been? Have they put him on hiatus due to all these negative comments? Poor kid. I hope returns soon.

We miss you, Skunkboy!!!
peppardb13 April 2002
Well , I will admit that I haven't watched this show for quite some time now. I watched it religiously when John Henson was on it and would literally laugh my head off. He definitely, in my opinion, made the show great. After he left I continued to watch it for a little while but never could get too excited about Hal Sparks. I mean he was all right, he was funny, but I guess once you've watched a show with the same host for a long time you get used to him. Now, Aisha Tyler is the host and I have seen a few segments of the show with her on it but never an entire episode. She seems like she's humorous. I need to find the time to sit down and watch a full episode. I never did watch the show when Greg Kinnear was host. I would like to see some old episodes with him and with John, but as far as I know, E! doesn't show reruns of those. Note to E!: Please someday consider showing those again if you aren't already! And as far as John Henson I hope he really succeeds in whatever he's doing now. I know he supposedly had some kind of deal with ABC but I have only seen one special of his since he left the soup. John has the potential to have another show again and I hope that someday he does. And hopefully Aisha will make it as well.

I miss John, but Hal isn't bad
glass_chameleon10 August 1999
This is one of the funniest shows on TV, and one of my all-time favorites, up there with MST3K, Star Trek Next Generation and Space Ghost: Coast to Coast.

I never got to see the Greg Kinnear years but I loved John Henson as the host. Skunk Boy was the best and the reason I tuned into the show every day. I didn't expect to watch the show much after he left, but I was pleasantly surprised with his replacement, Hal Sparks. He's not John, but he's not bad, either.

The comedic style of the show has changed, but not in a bad way. John was sarcastic-funny but Hal is kind of dorky-funny...sort of like your cute, funny but slightly annoying cousin that you beat up on when you both were kids. All in all, I think E! made a good choice.

This is a good show!!!!!!!!!!!
bandcrsh7 February 2004
Hello, I'm back from commenting on The Internet Movie Database, I haven't been commenting on this site for months, and now, about this TV show, My opinion on Talk Soup is that this was a good television show, I first watched it, way back in 1995, when we first got E! on our cable channel lineup and I first watched John Henson on that show, unfortunately, E! was removed from our cable channel lineup in Jan. 1997, but fortunately, it returned to our lineup in March 2001. When I first watched Talk Soup, after E! returned, I found out that another person was hosting Talk Soup, It was Aisha Tyler and then when we got a computer, I found out that John Henson was still hosting Talk Soup after E! was removed from our cable lineup in '97. Oh, by the way, In Case You Haven't Noticed, John Henson has an all brand new television show on Spike TV(TNN), It's called "The John Henson Project", and it comes on every Sunday Night at 10:00 PM and an encore is on every Monday Night at 11:05 PM on Spike TV: The #1 Cable Television Network For Men!

Hal Sparks must go!
ncih24 August 1999
I really loved this show with John Hensen. I rarely missed an episode. Now, I can't make it more than five minutes at a time once or twice a week. Sparks is so awful. Let's hope they change hosts soon or I won't be around to know.

great hosts
JBoze31324 April 2001
This show is totally made by the hosts, because most of the clips they show aren't even funny. I got E! on my satellite dish a few yrs ago and saw the show with Jon Henson, who is hilarious, then we have Hal Sparks, who I'm ashamed to say is on queer as folk. He wasn't very good as it was. But, the newest host Aisha is hilarious, and she does almost as well as Henson. The show works really well in the format it's in, and as I said, the hosts make it awesome.

My thoughts on Talk Soup
MikeMan-211 September 1999
Greg Kinnear is the only host of Talk Soup. After he left they should have stopped the show. John Henson was the least funniest guy in the world, I'm glad he stopped doing the show. I wish Greg Kinnear would do the show again.

Funny Show!!!

This show was great with Hensen. OK, Hal Sparks is all right. Don't give him the bad rap so much. The comedy of the show is a little more sexual. I mean, in a funny way. But Hensen will be missed. Good replacement though. You will laugh your ass off.

The Happiest Show on TV
StarGaze-915 April 2000
For years, I had heard of this show. But living in Canada, I was unable to see it. Then, in the summer of 1998, I vacationed in New Jersey, and saw my first "Talk Soup". I thought it was hilarious!

Recently, the Star! Network (Canada's answer to E!) was added to my cable package, so I now I watch "Talk Soup" every Friday. Its still hilarious! I only saw one episode with John, but I still find Hal amusing. I never knew what Greg was like, but based on what others have said, I'm sorry I never found out.

Aisha Makes It Funny
hillari10 April 2002
I could not get into this show when Henson and Kinnear were hosting it. Now that Aisha Tyler is the host, I find this show very funny. It's not the clips of the talk shows, it's the other skits that her and the cast are involved in. She just lights up the camera when she is on.
