Pedro Almodóvar was not pleased with the lighting of the film and he was reportedly not happy with the performances of both Àlex Casanovas and Peter Coyote. Both actors acknowledged that they found it hard to work with the director.
Peter Coyote spent there months perfecting his Spanish, a language he already spoke fluently at the time. He even had a language coach on set. However, Pedro Almodóvar decided to dub his voice by the actor Ángel Quislant in post-production, a decision that deeply upset Coyote. In spite of this, Coyote claims that he "liked" the film.
London Underground banned the film's poster which featured Victoria Abril in an S&M Jean-Paul Gaultier outfit complete with fake breasts, despite the image being used to promote the film everywhere else around the world.
This film marks the first time director Pedro Almodóvar worked with an American actor (Peter Coyote).
