Sometimes old fashioned works. Sometimes it doesn't.

Warning: Spoilers
This is the type of Capra-corn script that the veteran director would have used to start the fire to roast marshmallows. I found the characters preposterous and one note, the town pretty but bland and the plotline messy and unbelievable. Crystal Bernard plays a single mother who seemingly abandons her baby, only to turn up in town as its nanny, getting a job with its adopted mother, spinster schoolteacher Grace Zabriskie.

Every character in this five o'clock town has some sort of corny quirk, from "Doc Betty" (Cloris Leachman) to bad joke telling storekeeper Gary Grubbs, and the soap opera story with young Graham Sack and his wandering father (John Terry) quickly becomes sappy and cloying. Sentiment works when it has elements of realism, and I never bought what this country peddler script was trying to sell me.

Very Heartwarming

As an extra, I watched this movie being made. I was very impressed with the outcome. Much better than many big screen films. Too bad it's not shown again. Especially with how things are today in the world. We need more "feel good" films like this one. Crystal Bernard and Cloris Leachman were at their best! It is unfortunate that quality films such as this one are unavailable on DVD today. At least I've been unable to locate a copy of "Miracle Child". I believe it only ran/showed once on network TV. On the set, the entire cast and crew interacted well with everyone including the extras. I was impressed. I've been on other movie sets where there was not much harmony, if any. An excellent film for the entire family. Even tough guys will like it, and perhaps even get watery eyes.
