The series was shot 16:9 on Super 16 film to "future-proof" it, but then entirely post-produced in 4:3 "centre cut-out", effectively chopping off vast chunks from the edges of the image. No widescreen versions, or even letterbox versions, were ever made.
One reason for the change from the original title "Space Police" to "Space Precinct" was that the Danish toy company Lego objected to the use of "Space Police", the name for a line of their toys.
The pilot for this series, produced in 1986, was called Space Police (1986) (also known as "Star Laws"). It starred Gerry Anderson regular Shane Rimmer as Lt. Chuck Brogan and Catherine Chevalier as his partner, Officer Cathy Costello. It was never broadcast.
With each episode costing between US $1-1.5 million, this was at the time the most expensive show that had ever been made in the UK.
The character of Officer Beezle (Officer Orrin's first partner) only appeared in the first 4 episodes before being replaced by Officer Romek. This is because actor Tom Watt was not happy that his voice would be redubbed by American actor Lou Hirsch and so he quit. Beezle was quickly and quietly replaced by Romek, who was both acted and voiced by Hirsch.
