Back in 1994, long before he was cast to play Jaime Lannister in the hit series Game of Thrones, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau made his feature film debut in writer/director Ole Bornedal’s thriller Nightwatch, where he played a character named Martin, a law student who takes a job working as a night watchman at The Department of Forensic Medicine in Copenhagen just as the place starts filling up with the bodies of a serial killer’s victims. Now, thirty years after working on the original Nightwatch together, Bornedal and Coster-Waldau have re-teamed for a “30 years” later sequel called Nightwatch: Demons Are Forever, which is set to be released through the Shudder streaming service on May 17th – and with that date just a month away, a trailer for the film has arrived online! You can check it out in the embed above.

Streaming on Shudder May 17th is Nightwatch: Demons Are Forever, the chilling sequel to the Danish cult-classic Nightwatch (1994), which inspired the 1997 U.S. remake starring Ewan McGregor.
22-year-old medical student Emma (Fanny Leander Bornedal) has just taken a job as the night watch in the same forensic department where her parents were once almost killed by the famed psychopathic police inspector Wörmer. The events led to her mother’s suicide, and her father Martin (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) has turned to tranquilizers to suppress the memories. Determined to investigate what exactly happened to them, Emma tracks down and confronts Wörmer, only to unintentionally reawaken his bloodthirst and ignite a violent revenge on everyone who sealed his destiny years ago.
Written and directed by Ole Bornedal (The Possession), 1994’s Nightwatch was a success in Denmark and was shown at the Fantafestival in 1995. An English-language remake of the film, also directed by Bornedal, was...

"Isn't that Wörmer's signature?" Shudder has revealed the official US trailer for the Danish horror mystery sequel Nightwatch 2, known as Nightwatch: Demons Are Forever, from the same Danish filmmaker Ole Bornedal. Not to be confused with the two Russian movies Night Watch and Day Watch, this is not related - it's a new sequel to Bornedal's 1994 movie Nightwatch, which was remade into Nightwatch in 1997 with Ewan McGregor. The original also starred Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, who has become considerably more famous after "Game of Thrones". In this sequel, Martin's daughter, Emma, takes up a night watch job to find out what happened to her parents almost thirty years ago. A meeting with Wörmer in his cell pulls the serial killer out of his coma and sets in motion a chain of fateful events. Starring Fanny Leander Bornedal, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Kim Bodnia, Sonja Richter, Ulf Pilgaard, Casper Kjær Jensen, Paprika Steen, and Nina Rask.

Brad Dourif has had an incredible acting career that stretches back more than fifty years – and back in the early days of that career, he even earned a “Best Actor in a Supporting Role” Oscar nomination for his performance in the 1975 classic One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. Over a decade later, he started playing the role he is best known for, that of Charles Lee Ray, a.k.a. Chucky, a serial killer who uses voodoo to transfer his soul into the body of a doll. Dourif is now 74 years old, so when we hear that he has decided to retire from acting, it’s totally understandable… but while talking about his retirement, Dourif has also made sure to assure fans that his days of Chucky are not over. He will still continue to work on any Chucky projects that might come up.

The concept of expanding Sony’s Spider-Man universe originated in 2013, intending to introduce spin-off films, notably one featuring Venom after ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2.’ Disheartened by the film’s reception, Sony abandoned these plans, entering a collaboration with Marvel Studios in 2015, integrating Spider-Man into the MCU.
Despite mixed-to-negative reviews for Ssu movies like Morbius, the universe persisted, with various live-action and animated projects in development, exploring both Spider-Man’s supporting characters and villains. Rumors now suggest two additional projects focusing on Doc Ock and Mysterio, as reported by Caiden Reed on X.

The idea of an expanded Sony’s Spider-Man universe began in 2013, with plans to launch spin-off films, including one centered on Venom, following ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2.’ However, due to the film’s disappointment, Sony abandoned these plans and collaborated with Marvel Studios in 2015, and since then, Spider-Man has been one of the main characters in MCU.
However, despite Ssu movies generally receiving mixed to bad reviews (looking at your Morbius), the Ssu continued and now has plenty of live-action and animated projects in development focusing both on Spider-Man’s supporting character and his villains. If rumors are to be believed, two more projects can be added to that slate projects, focusing on Dock Ock and Mysterio, as stated by Caiden Reed on X.

It’s an interesting month ahead on Hulu, as the streamer rolls out some of the series it’s been keeping in its back pocket for the holiday season.
On December 15, the first season of Such Brave Girls will arrive. The sitcom follows a dysfunctional family – and we mean dysfunctional! – that includes real-life sisters Kat Sadler and Lizzie Davidson. British comedian Sadler has previously written for The News Quiz, Hypothetical, and Mel Giedroyc: Unforgivable, but this is her first big TV project. “Everything we joke about in the show is from a place of lived experience,” she told Funny Women. “I wish I could say this is a heart-warming show about overcoming trauma, but that would be a lie. It’s about three toxic, damaged egomaniacs manipulating the world and each other for their own personal gain, vengeance and glory…just like in Little Women.” Sounds good!

There’s never a bad time for a new superhero show, mind you. But with Amazon’s brilliantly bloody The Boys having been off air for five or so months now, the streaming world is particularly due for a new supe. With its list of new releases for March 2021, Amazon is going to be rectifying that.
The animated adaptation of Robert Kirkman’s comic series Invincible is set to arrive on Amazon Prime this March 26. Kirkman’s comic series is a colorful, thrilling, and violent take on superhero myths and the series that it inspired will feature a truly impressive cast. Take that all into account and this will be an important addition to the streaming superhero canon.
Also arriving in March is another big ticket item for Amazon. The long-awaited Coming to America sequel, Coming 2 America, will premiere on March 5. Eddie Murphy returns as Prince Akeem Joffer who...

Someone must have left the freezer door in the morgue open, because grisly reminders of the past are thawing before our eyes. You can see it this weekend with the release of John Lee Hancock’s The Little Things, a throwback to the days when movie stars hung out at crime scenes instead of in spandex, and it’ll be more apparent next month with the launch of Clarice, a television spinoff of 1991’s The Silence of the Lambs. All the evidence points to only one conclusion: the serial killer thrillers of the ‘90s are back!
Not that we’re complaining. For a macabre minute or two, every Hollywood name appeared eager to play either the detective or the killer—the hunter or the obsessed, which often proved interchangeable for both characters. Granted that means there can be something formulaic about many of these movies. Yet they can also be bleak,...

They say the definition of insanity is repeating the same thing over and over again while hoping for different results, and the only difference between the Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters and the studio’s last attempt at utilizing their roster of comic book characters to build a franchise is the presence of Kevin Feige’s Marvel Cinematic Universe lurking in the background.
Admittedly, the Spumc has already gotten further than The Amazing Spider-Man series did, with next year’s release of Venom: Let There Be Carnage and Morbius tripling the franchise’s tally of movies in the space of just a few months. However, there are more than a few similarities between the two superhero properties.

Sony’s last attempt at building a shared universe didn’t go according to plan, with the disappointing box office performance and generally lukewarm reception to The Amazing Spider-Man 2 nixing any further outings, despite the studio hedging their bets in a big way by stuffing the story full of Easter Eggs and teases of things to come, as well as hiring Drew Goddard to write and direct Sinister Six along with announcing various other spinoffs including Silver & Black and Spider-Man 2099.
Of course, Spider-Man was rebooted shortly afterwards as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but the absence of their marquee hero hasn’t stopped the company from trying again. Venom surprised a lot of people after it raked in over $850 million globally, but next year could see the Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters sink or swim with the double whammy of Morbius and Venom: Let There Be Carnage.

Sony and Marvel Studios’ Spider-Man: Far From Home swung into theaters this week to largely positive reviews and looks to be yet another massively successful entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with box office tracking suggesting that the Jon Watts-directed sequel will earn between $125m and $175m at the domestic box office during its first six days in release.

Following the box office success of the offbeat feature "Venom", more "Spider-Man" spin-offs from 'Sony's Universe of Marvel Characters' continue to move forward including "Morbius The Vampire', "Silk" and "Black Cat" "focused on being faithful to the comics", according to Sanford Panitch, President of Columbia Pictures:
Sony has licensing rights to over 900 Marvel Comics characters, including "Morbius", starring Jared Leto...
..."Kraven the Hunter", based on the "Spider-Man" villain...
...plus more features in development, including "Jackpot"...
..."Silk"...
....and "Nightwatch".
"'Spider-Man' connects to a lot of the characters," said Panitch.
"There are villains, heroes, and antiheroes, and a lot are female characters, many of whom are bona fide, fully dimensionalized and unique..."
The female "Black Cat", according to Panitch "...is enough of her own character with a great backstory and a canon of material to draw from, to justify her own film..."

Thanks to the billion dollar box office success of Marvel Studios' "Black Panther", Sony Entertainment's Columbia Pictures is developing Marvel Comics' 'black superhero' "Spider-Man" spin-off "Nightwatch":
"...debuting in Marvel's "Web of Spider-Man #97 (1993) , the origin of 'Nighwatch' starts with 'Doctor Kevin Trench', who witnesses a costumed man battling terrorists armed with invisibility-generating 'cloaking" devices.
"The man is killed, Trench unmasks the corpse and is horrified to learn the dead man was an older version of himself.
"Trench quickly strips the costume from 'his' body, runs away with the outfit, then decides to investigate the costume's origins, putting it on and becoming the super crime-fighter 'Nighwatch' ...
"...harnessing the power of self-replicating 'nanites', boosting his strength and durability and triggering his adrenal glands. The cape also responds to his subconscious thoughts allowing him to glide on the air..."

Venom arrived in theaters back in October to middling reviews, but that didn't stop talk of all the potential sequels and spinoffs it might spawn.
In an August interview with Total Film, Tom Hardy revealed that Marvel could make up to three Venom movies, saying, "We've signed up for three of them. So it's very much an open case. We'll see what people's responses are to it." Variety also predicted that if the film delivered at the box office, then Sony would move fast to introduce a number of heroes and villains from the Spider-Man universe in the form of sequels to the Hardy outing, as well as stand-alone films. At the moment, Sony's licensing pact with Marvel affords it the rights to around 900 characters, so the possibilities are pretty much endless.

Last September, it was reported that Edward Ricourt (Now You See Me) was hard at work on Nightwatch, another of Sony’s Marvel adaptations that was set to follow Venom‘s success. At the time, it was rumored that Spike Lee was targeted to direct the character’s first big screen appearance, although it’s officially been shot down over at ScreenRant. Nightwatch […]...

Earlier this year, word broke that none other than Spike Lee might be helming a new Marvel/Sony Spider-Man spin-off movie called Nightwatch. Now, that’s no longer the case. The BlacKkKlansman filmmaker gave a short but firm confirmation that he’s no longer attached to the project. Which asks a question: is Nightwatch happening at all now, or is it dead? […]

With Venom currently breaking records at the box office, it seems that Sony’s Universe of Marvel Characters is a go, which means that writer Richard Wenk is pushing forward on the planned Kraven the Hunter movie. Though the project is still a long way from reaching cinemas, the Equalizer scribe has divulged a few more details on the big screen debut of Spider-Man’s old villain, including news that he plans for the the web-slinger himself to make an appearance.
Speaking with Discussing Film and Hybrid Network, Wenk revealed that the movie is intended to be an origin story for Sergei Kravinoff that takes inspiration from Kraven’s Last Hunt. This fondly remembered comic book storyline sees Kraven putting on a Spidey costume in an attempt to prove that he can be a better hero than his former adversary, who at this point has been buried alive. On top of that,...

With “Venom,” which hits theaters next week, Sony is expanding its Spider-Man universe.
The upcoming tentpole stars Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock, a journalist who becomes the host of an alien symbiote and unwittingly adopts the terrifying alter-ego Venom. Venom has a long comic-book history with Spider-Man — in fact, Spidey was Venom’s first host. However, Sony has said that Spider-Man won’t be in this movie, and instead will tell a different origin tale for the famous villain.
It’s far from the only Spider-Man-related property in the works. While the web-slinging hero may not be involved in many of the projects, the studio is mining his universe for standalone projects focusing on several characters. One of the highest-profile films in the works: “Morbius,” starring Jared Leto as a scientist who, after a horrific accident, develops vampiric traits. “Safe House’s” Daniel Espinosa is set to direct the film.

Sony Pictures is developing yet another Marvel movie. This one is based on the character Jackpot. While Variety confirmed that the previously reported Silk and Nightwatch are in development, they also revealed that Jackpot is being developed as well.
Many of you might not be familiar with the character Jackpot, and if that's the case, she's a registered hero with The Initiative who fights crime in New York City. She has superhuman strength, durability, and endurance.
Jackpot a.k.a. Sara Ehret was created by Dan Slott and Phil Jimenez and she first appeared in the Free Comic Book Day 2007 comic book. Here's a little background on the character:
Sara Ehret is a lab assistant at Phelcorps Labs, a subsidiary of Oscorp. She was working on a form of gene therapy, a retrovirus called Lot 777, that would hopefully cure Parkinson's Disease. While studying a sample of Lot 777, Sara accidentally infected...

With so many comic book franchises flickering into life across the four corners of Hollywood, you’d be forgiven of losing track of who owns who.
Making matters worse is the fact that, when Marvel filed for bankruptcy back in the ’90s, the House of M sold many of its A-list characters to rival studios in a last-ditch attempt to stay above water. Fast forward to now, and Marvel Studios is a multi-billion dollar powerhouse that tends to rule over box office characters year in, year out.
And while Deadpool and the X-Men are homeward bound thanks to Disney’s pursuit of 20th Century Fox, Sony Pictures currently holds the film rights to “roughly 900 Marvel characters.” Nine hundred!
That’s a whole lot of potential brimming under the hood of Sony’s fledgling Marvel Universe (official name: Sony’s Universe of Marvel Characters), and it all kicks off with Venom this fall.

Sony’s Marvel title Silver & Black isn’t moving forward, but will be split up into two separate movies. The original movie was to revolve around Silver Sable, the boss of a war criminal bounty org, and burglar Black Cat. The first title will likely be Black Cat.
It is also expected that Gina Prince-Bythewood, the writer and director of Silver & Black, will depart, but still produce the separate films. If she leaves, the studio will reportedly hire another female director. Sony has access to 900 Marvel characters, and its intent is to grow canons and franchises. Other Sony Marvel properties in the mix are Daniel Espinosa-helming Morbius with Jared Leto starring as the lead vampire and Spider-Man villain, plus projects like Silk, Jackpot and Nightwatch with the studio looking to hire screenwriters for those titles.

“Venom,” the highly anticipated comic book adaptation that hits theaters in October, isn’t just an attempt to do justice to the legendary symbiote after a lackluster appearance in 2007’s “Spider-Man 3.” It’s also a big-budget bet by Sony Pictures that the world of Spider-Man can spawn an inter-connected series of superhero movies to rival what Disney has created with its Marvel characters and what Warner Bros. is attempting to pull of with its DC Comics heroes and villains.
With Disney’s acquisition of Fox’s film studio, Sony is now the only major studio outside of the Magic Kingdom with the licensing rights to Marvel characters. Fox has long had rights to “Fantastic Four” and “The X-Men,” pillars of the Marvel empire, that will now thanks to the magic of a multi-billion dollar corporate merger, be able to interact with Captain America, Iron Man, and other members of the Avengers.

If you’re a “Spider-Man” fan and you hear the recent news that Sony is moving ahead with a spin-off film based on Kraven the Hunter, you can’t help but feel disappointed. Unlike “Venom,” “Nightwatch,” “Morbius the Living Vampire,” or “Silver & Black,” Kraven is a character who feels completely useless without Peter Parker.
But alas, according to Collider, Sony is moving ahead on their “Kraven the Hunter” film and have hired writer Richard Wenk to figure out the question, “What does Kraven the Hunter hunt if he can’t hunt Spider-Man?” Wenk is probably best known for his work on a variety of Antoine Fuqua movies including the ‘Equalizer’ series and “The Magnificent Seven.” However, he’s also written “Jack Reacher: Never Go Back” and “The Expendables 2,” so Wenk is clearly an action guy.

If "Bangkok Dangerous," with Nicolas Cage as a hitman in Bangkok moping over both his career choices and a girl, felt familiar -- well, that's probably because it's derivative of many a sad assassin movie that's come before. But it's also a remake, and not just your run-of-the-mill Hollywood retread of a foreign film. "Bangkok Dangerous" finds Hong Kong-born sibling directing team Danny Pang and Oxide Pang Chun remaking their own debut, a 1999 Thai-language film of the same name, and joining that growing club of directors who've headed to the U.S. to try an English take on their own movie. While the set-up makes sense -- subtitle-avoidant audiences here prefer a language and actors they're familiar with, and who knows the ins and outs of a project better than whoever helmed it the first time out? -- these remakes have a higher chance of stinkiness than the already dubious average redo.
