Richard Baneham, Two-Time ‘Avatar’ VFX Oscar Winner, to Be Honored at Oscar Wilde Awards (Exclusive)
Richard Baneham, the Dublin-born visual effects and animation specialist who received Academy Awards for his work on the original Avatar and The Way of Water sequel, will be honored at the next Oscar Wilde Awards.
The 18th annual event, organized by the US-Ireland Alliance, is scheduled to return March 7 — in its traditional evening spot three days before the Oscars — to the Santa Monica home of Bad Robot, the production company of J.J. Abrams and Katie McGrath.
The casual bash celebrates the work of those from Ireland — and some who are not — who contribute to film, television and music.
“We’re delighted to honor Richie,” US-Ireland Alliance founder Trina Vargo said in a statement. “Not only is he creatively exceptional, but he is also beloved in the industry as someone who has always remained connected to his colleagues and friends in the film and animation industries in Ireland.”

There aren't very many major American animated features that weren't made by Disney, and some of the best were created by animation master Don Bluth. Bluth was a Disney animator who left the company citing "creative differences," and he went on to create classics like "The Secret of Nimh," "An American Tale," and "The Land Before Time." In 1994, Bluth teamed with 20th Century Fox and longtime collaborator Gary Goldman to create Fox Animation Studios. Their first feature was "Anastasia," a historical adventure story about Anastasia Romanov, the daughter of the last Russian Tsar and possibly the only survivor of the mass assassination of her family. The film earned two Academy Award nominations -- for the original song "Journey to the Past" and the movie's score -- and is remembered by many '90s kids for being a weird and wonderful alternative to the movies from the House of Mouse.

2002's Treasure Planet was a passion project for Aladdin directors John Musker and Ron Clements.
Writer-directors John Musker and Ron Clements have a hell of a track record at Disney. As key figures in the studio’s animation renaissance in the 1990s, they brought The Little Mermaid, Aladdin (the original one), and Hercules to the screen before the House of Mouse finally gave them a crack at their pet project – Treasure Planet, an outer-space adaptation of the classic Robert Louis Stevenson novel Treasure Island.
Featuring the voice talents of Joseph Gordon-Levitt, David Hyde Pierce, and Emma Thompson, the 2002 film reimagines Jim Hawkins as the tearaway teenage son of a single mother who obtains a digital treasure map from dying pirate Billy Bones. Fascinated by stories of the fabled Treasure Planet since childhood, Jim jumps at the chance to leave his backwater homeworld and join an outer-space voyage...

Apple may have made it harder for the police to crack down on iPhone's passwords.
"Apple has reportedly upped iOS 12’s security measures even more than previously expected. The software update has been said to be immune to one of the iPhone’s biggest weaknesses, the GrayKey password cracker employed by United States law enforcement using the device’s lighting port."

Here are the best animated villain songs to sing along with on Halloween.
"Who doesn’t love a good villain musical number? They’re usually the most fun part of the Disney classic, or Don Bluth film if we want to include honorary Disney movies Anastasia and The Swan Princess. The villain gets to swan about, dramatically laying out their evil plan or their motivations as the animation department kicks it...

Korean artist Na Young Wu’s manga style illustrations of characters in Western folktales wearing hanbok (traditional Korean formal wear) made the rounds on the Internet this past weekend. All of the photos I came across were really low resolution. So I went on a search for the largest versions of each image. Luckily, I just so happen to speak Korean, so I was able to navigate through random sites and forums on Naver (South Korea’s answer to Google) to find many of these hi-res images. I’ve provided the largest resolution files I could find, and came across a few other illustrations from the artist that I didn’t see on other sites.

Fifteen years ago today, DreamWorks released The Prince of Egypt — an epic Exodus adaptation with an incredible cast, including (but not limited to) Val Kilmer, Sandra Bullock, Michelle Pfeiffer, Ralph Fiennes, Helen Mirren, Steve Martin, Martin Short, Jeff Goldblum, Danny Glover, and Patrick Stewart. (Seriously, how great would it be to have a dinner party with that group?)
But the people who are perhaps most responsible for The Prince of Egypt’s legacy don’t even appear in the film: They’re Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey, the voices behind a little diva duet to end all diva duets called “When You Believe.

I don't know if Joe Lynch's Knights of Badassdom has ever actually screened for festival audiences, but I know the Larp (Live Action Role Playing)-centric comedy is one many have been looking forward to seeing and looks like it may be a good companion piece to Tucker and Dale vs. Evil. Production began way back in 2010 and it has been stagnant for the longest time, but now eOne Films has the rights and with it getting an MPAA rating today it could mean a release is right around the corner. The film stars the likes of "True Blood" star Ryan Kwanten, Peter Dinklage (X-Men: Days of Future Past, "Game of Thrones") and Summer Glau (Serenity). Additionally we have a rating for Asghar Farhadi's The Past, which I saw and loved at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year, as well as a rating for the Christmas Day...

I know you can hardly contain your excitement for Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3D, but the most interest rating for me today was the PG-rating for Sony Pictures's The Swan Princess: Christmas. I'm not sure I've ever seen a PG-rated film head in to the appeals process and I've been doing these articles for a long time. Other than that, what follows are the latest MPAA ratings from Bulletin #2237. #Holdyourbreath Rated R For strong bloody violence, sexual content, language and some drug use. Bigfoot County Rated R For pervasive language and a brief sexual assault. Down The Shore Rated R For language and some drug use. Electrick Children Rated R For language including brief sexual references. Escape Fire: The Fight To Rescue American Healthcare Rated PG-13 For some thematic material. Netflix has revolutionized the home movie experience for fans of film with its instant streaming technology. Netflix Nuggets is my way of spreading the word about independent, classic and foreign films being made available by Netflix for instant streaming. Important Note: There may be some films that do not become available on the specified dates. This is merely a report of the most accurate release dates I can find, but is not directly confirmed by Netflix themselves.
The Social Network (2010)
Streaming Available: 06/20/2011
Synopsis: Director David Fincher’s biographical drama chronicles the meteoric rise of Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg from Harvard sophomore to Internet superstar, examining his relationships with co-founder Eduardo Saverin and Napster founder Sean Parker.
Average Netflix Rating: 3.9
Recommendation: If you haven’t seen this yet… where have you been? See it yesterday! Also, Trent Reznor’s Academy Award-winning score for the film is outstanding. An experience in itself.

Each week within this column we strive to pair the latest in theatrical releases to the worthwhile titles currently available on Netflix Instant Watch.
This week while the Film Stage crew has been tearing it up at Tribeca’s Film Fest, Vin Diesel returns to franchise that launched him, teens hit up the prom, fairy tale figures face off, and Herzog goes underground. Whether or not you make it to the theater this weekend, you can still enjoy pulse-pounding action, animated antics, high school highs and lows, and the weird worldview of Werner Herzog.

Fast Five
Vin Diesel reunites with his fast and furious crew to pull off a heist that is as absurd as it is thrilling. Paul Walker and Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson co-star.
The Fast and the Furious (2001) The first feature of this kinetic car-chasing franchise is now streaming along with its Diesel-free sequel 2 Fast 2 Furious.

Barbara Hershey talks about her role in Black Swan and the potential pitfalls of a remake of her classic posession film The Entity .
Barbara Hershey, who starred in the shocking early 80s possession film The Entity (originally written by Frank de Felitta and based on a true story) is returning to psychological horror in the dark fantasy Black Swan as Erica, the disturbed and disturbing mother of ballet dancer Nina (played by Natalie Portman). At first Erica’s mothering seems loving, albeit a bit smothering, but it’s soon clear as the first half of the film moves on that she’s filled with resentment, jealously, rage, and is determined to protect Nina at all costs, no matter how much it may permanently harm her daughter.
While Nina vies the role of The Swan Princess in Swan Lake in the story, the characters in the film itself are modeled after characters in Swan Lake.

Behold the poster for The Princess and the Frog, Disney's greatly hyped return to 2D animation. As you can see, it's a busy little thing, full of characters great and small, Mardi Gras decorations, spooky -- uh, we mean scary -- shadow puppets, retarded Cajuns, blackjack accoutrements and voodoo products ... basically everything you could hope for in an enduring family classic. As happens from time to time around Movieline HQ, however, things began to resemble other things. Debate ensued. Staffers were divided over whether the titular amphibian resembled Michigan J. Frog or the lesser-known, direct-to-video frog Jean-Bob from The Swan Princess. Jean-Bob won out. Eventually, we landed upon a consensus. The result is after the jump.
