Kevin Lima's "A Goofy Movie" usually isn't listed as part of the Disney Renaissance. The film "wasn't even a B movie. It was a C movie," as Don Hahn (a producer on "Beauty and the Beast" and "The Lion King") recalled to Vanity Fair in honor of the movie's 25th anniversary in 2020. Much of the film's animation was outsourced to Disney Animation's smaller outlets in Paris and Australia, as well as non-Disney studios in Canada and Spain. The whole thing might've been scrapped, too, had it not already been greenlit by the head of Disney's film division, Jeffrey Katzenberg, just prior to his departure in the mid-1990s.
I bring all this up not to trash "A Goofy Movie" (I would never!), but to point out how ironic it is this "C movie" would go on to develop a passionate following, rivaling those for any of the Disney Renaissance hits.

Chuck E. Weiss, a longtime presence on the Los Angeles music scene and the subject of a Top 5 hit for Rickie Lee Jones, died Tuesday at age 76. Details on his death were not immediately available, but friends said he died after a long illness.
A staple performer on Mondays at The Central nightclub on the Sunset Strip for 11 years with his band, The Goddamn Liars, Weiss convinced friend Johnny Depp to help revive it when it fell on hard times. It became the Viper Room, one of the hottest music venues in the city. He also became associated with the Kibitz Room, an offshoot of Canter’s Deli on Fairfax Avenue, where a booth was named in his honor for his presence at the room’s frequent jams.

“As we’ve progressed season to season, I’ve sort of come up with a bigger palate and a bigger sound and a more expansive universe for the score,” reveals Siddhartha Khosla, the Emmy-nominated composer behind the music for NBC’s hit drama “This is Us.” “I’m definitely leaning into a lot more atmospheric elements. I model the score after Brian Eno in some ways. He’s a big influence for me.” Watch the exclusive video interview above.
“When I first started scoring the series, I used to have character-specific themes,” Khosla recalls. “That’s where I came up with the Jack theme. But as we learn with the show and Dan Fogelman‘s design of it all, I like having themes that feel big picture. So that might have been written for Jack but that ends up becoming like their family theme in many ways. Because their family sort of hinged on Jack.

Facing the same pandemic production difficulties as many other TV shows this season, NBC’s “This Is Us” will end its currently airing fifth season two episodes shy of its original count, TheWrap has learned.
Intended to have 18 episodes, Season 5 of Dan Fogelman’s family drama will now consist of 16 episodes, with the finale airing May 25 at 10 p.m. The condensed-season strategy is something several broadcast shows are opting for in 2021 to try to help curb the spread of Covid-19 as vaccines continue to roll out.
On the bright side, fans still have three more hours of Pearson family fun (and tears) to look forward to over the next few weeks, as Episode 13, titled “Brotherly Love,” just aired Tuesday, meaning there are three left in Season 5. The next new installment of “This Is Us” is set for May 11.

With the Sundance Film Festival less than a week away (and available to anyone in the U.S. willing to buy tickets to a Covid-safe 2021 virtual edition), late January sees more streaming options than virtually any week since the pandemic began. That doesn’t necessarily mean big movies for home viewers, but at least it offers a raft of new options.
For those seeking diversion with familiar faces, genre movies such as “Brothers by Blood” (featuring Matthias Schoenaerts and Joel Kinnaman), “No Man’s Land” (with George Lopez) and “Born a Champion” (starring Sean Patrick Flanery). Jason Segel plays a family friend who helps a couple (played by Casey Affleck and Dakota Johnson) through the ugliness of cancer in “Our Friend,” based on a true story. If that sounds too serious, try “Psycho Goreman,” in which resourceful low-budget horror director Steven Kostanski makes a deliberately schlocky family film.

Small-time Irish crooks Peter and Michael Brooks are not siblings but cousins, although there’s no shame in feeling confused amid the somewhat convoluted Philadelphia-set crime drama “Brothers by Blood.” Other characters make the mistake all the time, pulling Peter aside and implying that the brewing trouble between Michael’s gang and the more-established Italian mobsters in town would calm if he would just do something about his brother — something like making the hotheaded union boss disappear. “He’s not my brother,” Peter explains, but his loyalty runs as deep as if he were.
“Brothers by Blood” represents writer-director Jérémie Guez’s oblique, atmospheric take on Pete Dexter’s taut and relatively uncomplicated 1991 novel “Brotherly Love.” Even the casting is unconventional — though Schoenaerts’ and Kinnaman’s gruff, mumbly performances are the best thing about it, a throwback to an earlier generation of Method actors.

A working-class gangster pic whose protagonist is a more reluctant criminal than most, Jeremie Guez’s Brothers by Blood adapts Pete Dexter’s 1991 novel Brotherly Love. Sharp-eyed readers will have guessed that the action is set in Philadelphia, and the film’s feel for its post-industrial, gray-skies setting is one of its main assets. Outranking that is star Matthias Schoenaerts, whose taciturn character would much rather hone his boxing skills than help run his family’s illicit business. But the picture rarely makes that business much to look at, providing some kind of energy to offset the actor’s appropriate reserve....

Cory Hardrict has joined Orange Is The New Black alum Taryn Manning in Karen, the indie suspense thriller from writer and director Coke Daniels. Manning, who is producing the indie, will play Karen White, who believes that races should stick to their “own kind” and carries this belief into her neighborhood. Hardrict will star as Malik, a community activist in Atlanta dedicated to his wife and fighting social injustices. When Malik and his wife, Assata, become Karen’s new neighbor, she makes it her personal mission to remove them from the neighborhood, by any means necessary. However, Assata and Malik don’t have time for this and aren’t going down without a fight.
Manning is producing the pic with Daniels and Craig Chapman. Burke Management Firm founders Vanzil Burke and Victor Burke will serve as executive producers.

"The Italians have been around for like, what, 100 years? And you want to go to war?" Vertical Ent. has revealed a brand new trailer for the film titled Brothers by Blood, which is the official US title for release here. This also goes by the names Sons of Philadelphia or The Sound of Philadelphia, and we posted the original French trailer a few weeks ago (which used the title Sons of Philadelphia). Adapted from the book "Brotherly Love" by Pete Dexter, the film is a tale of family, friendships and betrayal in the violent world of the Philadelphia mob. Focusing on two brothers, one adopted, who grew into different people. They get into big trouble with the Italian mafia. The cast is the most exciting part: Matthias Schoenaerts, Joel Kinnaman, Maika Monroe, Ryan Philippe, and Paul Schneider. This is a better trailer than the first one - setting up the mob war.

This past summer’s VOD Lawrence Brothers sensation Money Plane marks a bit of a digression as a recommendation from this fan. It falls into one of those very lovable subcategories of critical appreciation this viewer likes to call the “Dumb Action Movie.” This cost-effective, near-camp shoot-em-up confection cheerfully weathers its budgetary and technical constraints to triumphantly become nothing but a good time.

A revival of MTV’s ’90s dating show classic is coming to Quibi with multihyphenate Hustlers star Keke Palmer and comedian and Sunnyside standout Joel Kim Booster as hosts. The series is set to launch on the short-form mobile video platform in Spring 2020.
Earlier this year, MTV Studios revealed that they were bringing the classic dating show as well as Punk’d to Quibi. The original Singled Out ran from 1995 to 1998 with Chris Hardwick and Jenny McCarthy as hosts. Each episode featured a group of 50 singles competing for a date with one contestant. The new iteration will hook up a new generation of singles, of all genders and sexual preferences, seeking love in 20 bite-sized episodes. Reflective of today’s dating landscape, where everyone is connected, the series will bring online dating to life with a twist — the main dater is linked to the pool of diverse singles through social media.

Deep in the basement of a swanky Brooklyn restaurant, stacked up high in a walk-in freezer, is a bounty: kilos and kilos of uncut cocaine, just waiting to be taken.
