The Walking Dead, Stranger Things and even Brooklyn Nine-Nine are all getting in the Halloween spirit, but if you’re searching far and wide for a spooky movie marathon, John Carpenter has chimed in with his recommendations. Yes, the John Carpenter.
The Fader recently caught up with the illustrious filmmaker to discuss Halloween‘s lasting legacy, the ever-evolving horror genre, and those timeless classics that helped influence his remarkable filmography. It’s a fascinating insight into one of cinema’s all-time greats, and below you’ll find the eight horror films that had a bearing on Carpenter’s career. Unsurprisingly, Night of the Living Dead, George A. Romero’s crowning achievement, claimed the #1 spot.

In April 1968, director George A Romero threw some reels of film in the trunk of his car and took a long drive from Pittsburgh to New York. The grainy, black-and-white footage stored on those reels was little short of incendiary: then called Night Of The Flesh Eaters, Romero's film would, in time, change horror cinema forever.

Make no mistake about it: this was a great year for horror fans. It was so good, in fact, that making a list of “favorites” is almost impossible because there’s just too much I want to talk about. The independent horror scene continues to crank out new classics and minor gems, but even studio horror was good this year: The Conjuring 2, Don’t Breathe, Ouija: Origin of Evil, Lights Out (not my bag, but a lot of people really enjoyed it), The Boy (not a lot of people’s bag, but I really enjoyed it), The Purge: Election Year, and so on. Even better? Pretty much every one of them was successful at the box office. As more and more horror moves are released with the limited release / VOD model, it’s nice to know that good movies still play to big audiences at the multiplex.
And what about horror on TV?...

This has easily been the hardest time I’ve ever had whittling down my favorite genre offerings for the year. I was fortunate to watch so many great movies throughout the course of the last 12 months (over 150—new and old!), and considering the quality of projects from both the studio and independent sides of the business was exceedingly high, I probably could have featured 20 films on this list, and still would have at least a dozen more I could recommend to fellow fans. 2016 was definitely one of the best recent years in horror and that’s pretty rad.
Beyond the realm of movies, horror also had a strong showing on TV, as it seems almost every single network these days has something of interest if you’re looking to immerse yourself in horror on the small screen. I was also fortunate enough to attend several amazing genre events in 2016, making...

Every decision made by Star, Simone, and Alexandra over the course of “Star’s” one-hour premiere could kill them. From escaping their respective foster homes to rolling into Atlanta strip clubs with the hopes of picking up a manager, Lee Daniels’ latest Fox pilot is driven by reckless teenagers making ill-informed choices. Atlanta-beauty-shop-owner-turned-surrogate-mom Carlotta Brown (Queen Latifah) starts the show with a bit of ominous narration — “fame ain’t nothin’ but a trip” — but the show doesn’t treat these teens as cautionary tales.
Instead, this confounding pilot depicts danger in the pursuit of stardom as desirable fantasy. Rather than honestly represent the storyline’s treacherous scenarios — which include parental, drug, and alcohol abuse, as well as more outrageous extremes like murder — Daniels’ drama exploits the perilous conditions it portrays, grounding its fantasy in a false reality.

John Carpenter is not impressed by “The Walking Dead.” The iconic horror director behind “Halloween” and “The Thing” says that the hit AMC zombie drama is derivative of George A. Movies, says William Goldman, are not like vintage wines, changing with each passing year. Movies are (or were) just strips of celluloid running through a machine, and if you can find a print of The Great Train Robbery, it is exactly what it was when it was filmed in 1903.

Movies, says William Goldman, are not like vintage wines, changing with each passing year. Movies are (or were) just strips of celluloid running through a machine, and if you can find a print of The Great Train Robbery, it is exactly what it was when it was filmed in 1903.

Horror films are built on our voyeuristic impulses. Our desire to witness or experience the obscene, the taboo, and the grotesque draws us into films about crazed killers or unseen forces. We don’t just want to be shocked, we want to be vulnerable. The stalking scene is a staple of the genre because it involves us in the filmmaking process by providing us a point of view: usually third person from a victim or first person from a killer. Unlike a chase scene, where both parties are aware of the game, the stalking often involves an oblivious participant. These are the slowest and most methodical scenes. There’s no rush to where we’re going because there is no destination to get to. Once the participant becomes aware, there’s only four options: run, hide, fight, or die.

This week we discuss two new Canadian Holiday horror films. The first is A Christmas Horror Story, which offers five interwoven, variably comedic tales of terror set on Christmas Eve — and the second is Bruce McDonald’s small-scale and ambition Halloween thriller, Hellions, which is best described as a metaphor for the fears that accompany teen pregnancy. Before all that we quickly discuss the first season of Fear the Walking Dead, John Carpenter’s The Fog and actor Michael Shannon. Our guest this week is former contributor, Al White.

Did you never want the apocalyptic party from 2013's This Is the End to stop? If so, then you might want to aim your car hood towards the West Coast this fall, because Universal Studios’ Halloween Horror Nights Hollywood has announced an upcoming This Is the End 3D horror comedy maze.
Kicking off September 18th, the This Is the End maze is a collaboration between Universal Studios Hollywood and James Franco, Seth Rogen and Jonah Hill, who starred as themselves in the film about a party at Franco's house that turns deadly when the biblical apocalypse begins.
The maze will feature a replica of Franco's Hollywood home and it sounds as though decisions participants make could determine whether they end up damned and left for dead or saved and sent to heaven (as seen in the film), offering a bit of a Choose Your Own Adventure flavor to the proceedings.

Sure, it’ll be Valentine’s Day in about one week, but Halloween is less than nine months away, so it’s definitely not too early to start thinking about costumes and cobwebs, even as you chow down on candy hearts and foil-wrapped chocolates.
The folks at Trick or Treat Studios are definitely in the fall frights spirit, as they recently unveiled their entire 2015 lineup of masks, including some familiar faces from AMC’s The Walking Dead, Clive Barker’s Nightbreed, Lucio Fulci’s Zombie, John Carpenter’s Halloween II, Topps’ Garbage Pail Kids card line, George A. Romero’s Land of the Dead, Steven Spielberg’s Jaws, Ryan Murphy’s American Horror Story: Freak Show, and many more.
Ahead of Trick or Treat Studios’ appearance at the Halloween Expo in New Orleans this weekend, Halloween Daily News caught up with the manufacturer and unveiled their entire 2015 masks lineup.

From The Good The Bad And The Ugly.Ca, Sneak Peek 'the good, the bad and the ugly' in director Michael Mann's new thriller "Blackhat", starring Chris Hemsworth, Wei Tang and Viola Davis:
Michael Stevens For 'The Good':
"In director Michael Mann's "Blackhat", furloughed convict 'Nick Hathaway' (Hemsworth) with American and Chinese partners, hunts down a high-level cybercrime network connecting Chicago, Los Angeles, Hong Kong and Jakarta.
"Mann delights in exploring CG 'digital trails', plunging into physical networks, following power surges while mapping out a glowing high-tech world, in contrast to the grimy digs used by a sweaty, terrorist hacker.
"Thor" actor Hemsworth, looking every inch an action star, knows how to use a gun (as opposed to a hammer) and effortlessly takes out gaggles of baddies, using 'MacGyver'-like prison smarts to street-fight his way out of confrontations.

For the 2014 edition of Coffin Couture’s Holiday Gift Guide, I thought I would offer up some pretty sweet riffs on traditional “no really, you shouldn’t have” gifts like socks, scarves and underwear, as well as some other stuff that you’re going to want to score for yourself or that special someone that has a thing for cranky Old Saint Krampus.
Cthulhu scarf
My scarf collection nearly rivals my shoe collection. And that’s saying something since until a recent purge, I owned approximately 50 pairs of kicks. I know, first world problems are a bitch. So up first on my list is a scarf that make all my other scarves turn green with envy from Austin-based purveyors of cool stuff, Middle of Beyond. Even Lovecraft himself would lust after Mob’s “Cthulhu” scarf (above, $29.99). Check out all of Mob’s awe-inspiring knitwear and other ungodly goods over at their official site.

In the new independent horror movie Refuge, Carter Roy, Amy Rutberg, and young actress Eva Grace Kellner play a family trying to survive in a post-apocalyptic world where the population has been almost entirely wiped out by disease. Given recent, panic-causing news events, the film could hardly be more topical. So what is it like to have made a movie about a global pandemic just as people are reaching for their face masks? "It’s incredibly coincidental that it’s peaking right now," says Refuge director Andrew Robertson, whose film recently played the Toronto After Dark and L.A.-based Screamfest genre festivals.

"Horror is a communal activity. People go to horror films in groups, with your friends. Every single tiny scare in a movie is usually followed by a laugh, that is a very important thing. An event like this fosters that."

If a step-by-step guide were written for how to create a standard zombie narrative, it would be titled "Z Nation." Start with one part outbreak footage, and mix in some overlapping audio clips of news regarding said outbreak.
Simmer it in a stock of basic characters with one part brown-haired stubbly leader, one part love interest, two parts mysterious drifters with unexplained combat prowess, and three parts uninteresting zombie chow to beef up the cast.
Marinade in a standard post-apocalyptic world, equal parts towns trying to make it and traveling caravans with dubious intent. Bake for 45 minutes in standard character dilemmas, adding in a mission to cure the virus for some longevity. Garnish with dialogue.
I try not to be too critical of things for being standard. I can’t expect everyone watching something to have the same breadth of exposure as I do, and in my experience there’s...

The first round of 2014 Emmy Awards were handed out at the Creative Arts Emmys ceremony on Saturday (August 16) night at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles. The ceremony, which precedes the Monday, August 25 Primetime Emmy Awards telecast, offered signs of hope for a number of drama and comedy hopefuls. Netflix's "Orange Is The New Black," for example, won Emmys for editing, series casting and for Uzo Aduba, who is considered a guest actress for the purposes of these awards. No other comedy series was able to build any other momentum going into next week's show, with "The Big Bang Bang Theory," "Nurse Jackie," "How I Met Your Mother" and "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" grabbing isolated tech prizes and Jimmy Fallon winning the Guest Actor in a Comedy Series award for the second time in three years for his "Saturday Night Live" hosting duties. Spread #1
Written by Justin Jordan
Art by Kyle Strahm
Published by Image Comics
Imagine what the world could have ended up as if John Carpenter’s The Thing got out of Antarctica, but a small segment of the population was immune to it. That’s the basic premise of Spread. Sure, the Spread is easier to kill, but it’s every bit as gruesome as to look at as The Thing, and spreads with alarming rapidity. Justin Jordan wrote that one of his inspirations was to tell a story set after an apocalypse, which puts this story right in the vein of The Walking Dead.
At some point, a violent organism known as the Spread effectively demolished civilization. The organism resembles a sort of protoplasm that takes various grotesque shapes and can infect human beings to create more of it. A small percentage of human beings were naturally immune, and...

The road so far …
It wasn’t exactly easy for genre television in 2005. Well, it’s really never been easy for genre television ever in the history of television, but in 2005, a deluge of genre shows premiered and almost all of them had fallen prey to the swift axe of the television gods by the next year. Start by thinking about television now. It’s a fruitful time for horror and science fiction and fantasy. There are a multitude of genre shows, running the gamut from The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, to True Blood and The Vampire Diaries. They’re all massive hits.
Now, think of all of the shows that premiered around that time in 2005. There was Surface, and that was cancelled after ten episodes by NBC. Invasion, a well-regarded show written by Shaun Cassidy (who created one of my favorite shows, American Gothic) and that was cancelled...

A world-destroying plague. Survivors pitted against one another. Giant monsters roaming the land. These are the elements of Enormous, a new web series from Machinima based off of the Image Comic that mixes the human elements of books like The Walking Dead with a little bit of kaiju mayhem and a little bit of Food of the Gods. Good day, stranglers of all things neckless. Olympics, huh? Sports on ice are no fun until there.s blood involved. Maybe it.s just me, but I think acting out scenes from John Carpenter.s The Thing should be a winter event.
