3-D in CinemaScope? That seems like a strange combination, but this obscure treasure hunt adventure with Joanne Dru and Mark Stevens is indeed billed as being filmed in the ‘Miracle of Stereo-Vision,’ five years after the demise of Hollywood’s first fling with ‘depthies.’ Kino and the 3-D Film Archives extras include two vintage 3-D shorts, one of them never screened in 3-D.

My first meeting as a member of the New York Film Critics Circle was December 1989 and, in those days, the group met at the old Newspaper Guild building, then on West 44th Street. The meeting room was a cramped, windowless enclosure with fake wood-panel walls, a full assortment of ashtrays and the ambiance of — well, interior designers have a technical name for enclosures like this: Shit-hole, I believe, is the term of trade.
But when I walked into this unprepossessing little room, here were people whose names were magical to me, critics whose work helped shape the way I looked at movies as a college student and then as a nascent critic and film journalist. Pauline Kael. Andrew Sarris. Rex Reed. Richard Schickel.
Schickel, who died Saturday at 84, may have been the name that struck the deepest chord at that time. Long before I discovered either Kael or Sarris, I...

“And now one for all the nostalgics out there. A blast from the past… that beautiful time when people refused to accept that the future was just around the corner.”
Alfonso Cuarón’s “Children of Men” arrived in theaters on Christmas Day, 2006, and immediately announced itself as the best and bleakest sci-fi movie of the 21st Century. It has also proven to be the most prescient, anticipating a time when Britain has closed its borders, hateful isolationism has taken root, and xenophobia spores out of walled garden across the world. If once this story provided a window into a dark possibility, recent events have warped it into a funhouse mirror that reflects our new reality. “Children of Men” may be set in 2027, but when Donald J. Trump was elected President of the United States, it suddenly became clear that its time had come.

At the three-day event, Scott caught up with Adrienne King, who discussed playing the first final girl in the Friday the 13th franchise, her interest in painting, returning to acting, and teaming up with Valley View to create Crystal Lake Wines.]
Hi Adrienne, thanks for sitting down with Daily Dead. I’d like to start off with Friday the 13th. It’s always been my belief that Halloween is unique and an anomaly, and that Friday the 13th really set the tone for the slashers that followed.
Adrienne King: I think so, too. In terms of women not being victims, or a woman being the killer, it hadn’t really been done before. And sometimes I think about if it was accidentally empowering women, or if they just wanted to do something that had a twist. And who would have ever guessed that the killer could have been a woman? A sweet lady, too, Betsy Palmer. No one saw that coming.
My generation really didn’t know Betsy Palmer. But when my parents saw her on the screen, they were like, “Oh my god! Betsy Palmer is the killer!” They...

While making the press rounds earlier this month for Quentin Tarantino's "The Hateful Eight," Kurt Russell entered into a heated debate with Hollywood Elsewhere founder Jeffrey Wells over the issue of gun control (he doesn't believe in regulations) and violence in the movies (he doesn't believe it influences real-life violence). You can listen to the audio and read a transcript here for the full context of their conversation. HitFix is an entertainment site, so I won't be tackling Russell's comments about gun control, which I disagree with. His opinions on violence in the movies, however, are fair game. First, here's the relevant portion of his conversation with Wells: Wells: "I think there’s a feeling about shootings and violence right now…I think it’s different in 2015 than it was in the mid ’90s. But Quentin is still playing the same game more or less." Russell: "Well, Quentin does what he does.

I can’t remember a time in my life that Star Wars was not a part of. As a child, I would endlessly watch my family’s VHS copies of the original trilogy that my parents recorded off TV and would frequently have lightsaber fights with my brother using sticks outside. Seeing the theatrical rerelease of the original trilogy for the Special Edition in 1997 are some of my earliest memories of going to a movie theater.
When the prequel trilogy came, I was immensely excited. This was going to be the Star Wars that I could call my own—one that I would get to experience just like my parents did with the original trilogy. However, this did not really end up being the case, and the prequel trilogy was not just a disappointment for me and other Star Wars fans in my generation, it was...

By the time you read this, there will only be 46 days, 5 hours, 29 minutes, and 7 seconds until Star Wars: The Force, Black to the Future debuts. Ok, I’m not even sure if that time calculation is right. I mean, who knows when you actually read my article, right? The point should not be missed though: the hype train is in full force for the next installment in Mickey Mouse’s epic empire. And boy howdy, could I give two poops less about it all.
Forgive me, Star Wars fans. The force is so very, very weak with me. My generation didn’t grow up with Star Wars, unless we had older brothers or sisters. Return of the Jedi debuted when I was two. Chicago – The anchoring presence of actress Patricia Clarkson has been familiar to movie audiences for the last three decades. From her debut role as Elliott Ness’s wife in “The Untouchables,” to her role currently as a just-divorced New Yorker in “Learning to Drive,” Clarkson brings depth and character to all of her roles.
“Learning to Drive” is a transition story for the two main characters. Patricia Clarkson is Wendy, a successful book critic in New York City. whose husband has just walked out on her and seeks a divorce. Devastated, she looks to resume her life, and part of it means finally learning to drive. Darwan (Sir Ben Kingsley) is her driving instructor, a Sikh from India going through a transition of his own. The two disparate souls help each other in essential ways, and at the same time weather the storm of some extreme life changes.

"Don't have to explain myself to you / I don't give two f**ks about your review" said Paul Weller with The Jam on 'The Modern World' back in 1977, so I don't think he'll be all that bothered by what I say about his band or this documentary.
He doesn't have to worry either way. Screened in the city ahead of its broadcast on Sky Arts next week, The Jam: About The Young Idea is a fine documentary that can reel in movie fans who hadn't necessarily surrendered to the beat of Weller, Bruce Foxton and Rick Buckler before.

During the Locarno Film Festival I sat down with "Perfidia" writer/director Bonifacio Angius, star Stefano Deffenu, and Sardinia Film Commissioner Nevina Satta. "Perfidia" is the sole Italian film in competition at the Locarno Film Festival where it just had its world premiere.
"Perfidia" : Perfidia Angelo, 35, is unemployed, alone and without passion. He takes comfort in a bar, dreaming of meeting a girl with whom to start a family. On the death of his mother he rediscovers his relationship with his father, Peppino, who had forgotten him.
Locarno Film Festival’s Artistic director Carlo Chatrian describes "Perfidia" “turns the father-son relationship in a provincial city like Sassari not so much into a model of the absence of relationships, but a prism through which we can read a country that has stopped communicating and is contenting itself with survival.” The filmmakers refer to it as a simple and universal story shot in Sassari that could take place in any city of the province of Italy. Bonifacio Angius states, “Knowing the places of the film makes the story even more authentic.”
Nevina Satta describes the project as truly independent with a budget of approximately 300,000 euros, and partially funded by the Sardinian film commission, in-kind donations, free locations, and grants.
Kouguell: What inspired you to make this film?
Angius: It comes from what I experienced myself and the need of telling a story about this moment in history. It was also caused by my own personal fears. I thought about what would be the worst thing that could happen to me, which would be the destruction of my family. The protagonist, Angelo, is my worst nightmare.
I belong to my protagonist’s generation. it’s a very shared and common fear. My generation gets not only moral support from their families, but economic support. The fear of losing one’s family is not only the fear of getting lost; it’s the practical support, so you combine the deep pain of that loss with a total lack of certainty.
Kouguell: The father and son relationship is powerful, painful and believable.
Angius : I didn’t want to cheat; I didn’t want to use any cinematic trick or artifice. This was a painful process in the writing and realization of the film. When you are visualizing your character, this pain had to be kept as real and true as I could. For me authenticity was a necessity.
Kouguell: What is the significance of the film’s title?
Angius : It’s a title that fits perfectly with the story. The title doesn’t refer to the characters; it refers to the world they live in. It’s what’s behind and underneath a controlled situation; the negative emotion. In the beginning of the film, Angelo is very sad, lonely and has a lot of emptiness inside. He is very passive until the final action in the film when he explodes and makes that fateful decision. The Perfidia represented that for the character.
Angius and Stefano Deffenu
Angius and Deffenu were born in Sardinia and they studied at the film school in Florence where they became good friends. In addition to his work as an actor, Deffenu is also a documentary filmmaker and cinematographer, currently working on a film about an Indian tribe of children in Nepal. Angius and Deffenu previously worked together on other projects, including Grace, which Angius directed and the pair co-wrote.
Angius : Our partnership is so tight; we didn’t ‘work’ – when you work with the person you know so well you don’t have to explain things. You don’t have to ask, ‘I want character this way or that,’ with a few words you’re getting what you want. I knew Stefano would be Angelo. I shaped the character from him.
Kouguell: What’s next for "Perfidia" ?
Satta: We are working on distribution deals with both Italian and European distribution. The film is just starting the festival circuit and has just been selected for Montreal and Hamburg. The film was produced by Movie Factory. It was mostly an all Sardinian film below and above the line, which is very important for Angius. You have to give people the chance to work and that’s what their films do.

Yesterday we ran a story on some of Robin Williams’ most under appreciated performances. But as the remembrances keep rolling in and as new, gruesome details about his suicide become apparent, it became clear that Williams didn’t just have depth in his filmography; he was an actor and performer who displayed worlds of expression and moved so many in remarkable and distinct ways.
Rather than ask our staff to rattle off more of their favorites, we asked them to recall Williams’ personality and the legacy his work left on their lives. We’re looking at each side of his many faces as a comedian, a movie star, a voice actor and a true character, offering our final goodbye to a man who gave us so much.

Nathan Fillion and Joss Whedon have a very long working relationship that started when Fillion played the legendary Captain Malcolm Reynolds on FIrefly. Since then they've worked on several projects together, with Fillion even playing the "Little Bad" in season 7 of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. They have such a strong friendship that Fillion wrote a wonderful foreword to Whedon's biography. The foreword was published by USA Today, and I've included part of it below:
My generation, we were kind of raised on the super-cool, "I can handle anything" with a gun in his hand hero. Any situation you throw at him, he can handle it — with catchphrases. It was very cool.
But Joss Whedon's version of a hero doesn't always win. He loses more than he wins, and when he wins, the victories are tiny, but he takes 'em. "That's a victory! I call that a victory!" It's a tiny victory — he takes it,...

This year at Comic-Con, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment is occuping the very prestigious Hall H on Thursday, July 24th at 6 pm to announce the details of the long-awaited Blu-Ray and DVD release of the iconic, fan favorite Batman: The Complete Television Series. Working to build up anticipation for the announcement ahead of Comic-Con, the studio recently released a sizzle reel – and boy is it terrific.
My generation missed the Batman TV series completely, but most of us are familiar with West’s campy Caped Crusader and Ward’s superlative-loving Robin. And now that a whole, horrific mess of legal problems has been figured out, I’ll finally get the chance to see the two do their thing when the Blu-Ray, containing...

After the curious case of Edge Of Tomorrow’s surprise critical popularity, Rob investigates a strange Hollywood happening…
Feature
The release of Edge Of Tomorrow - which opened in the Us this past weekend, following its bow in the UK a week earlier - has brought, not for the first time, a strange Hollywood trend to light. And it's this: do we trust big stars to make decent movies anymore?
Many people, this writer included, took a lot of convincing to venture out and see Tom Cruise in a hugely expensive sci-fi spectacular (notwithstanding the fact that Cruise has fine form in science fiction). The film in question, Edge Of Tomorrow, is directed by Doug Liman of The Bourne Identity, and based on a graphic novel with a cool title. So surely this should have been a movie which audiences were enthusiastically anticipating? Yet It didn’t seem that way,...

Austin television fans have been gearing up for the 3rd annual Atx Television Festival (or as the festival likes to say, "Season 3"), running from Thursday, June 5 to Sunday, June 8 in downtown Austin. The relatively new festival features a handful of current television shows as well as a few retrospectives and panels that focus on the behind-the-scenes world of TV. Venues include Alamo Drafthouse Ritz and Stateside at the Paramount.
The full lineup was recently released, and Nineties kids will once again rejoice at the fact that another childhood favorite is coming to Atx. A cast and crew reunion of Hey Dude! is one of the headliners, bringing fan favorites such as Christine Taylor and David Brisbin to town. That's not the only reunion the fest has planned, though. Everwood and Roswell cast members are also coming together again to discuss what it was like to work on these popular shows.

Prime Minister David Cameron will host the final banquet for the ninth series of Great British Menu.
The theme for the BBC Two cooking competition this year is World War II and the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings and several veterans will be in attendance.
"My generation, this country, we enjoy freedom, we enjoy democracy because of the sacrifices your generation made and we must never forget that," Cameron said to the guests.
The Great British Menu banquet will be shown on Friday, June 6 at 7pm on BBC Two.
It's a huge pleasure to be here tonight in this astounding venue. We're here of course to commemorate D-Day. I simply cannot imagine what it must have been like to land on those beaches - to uncertainty, to terrifying danger, to possible death. But that is exactly what thousands of young men did.

Eddy and Sid after a Master Class at Nyu, 2003. (Photo: Michael Doft)
Sid Caesar’s funeral service was held on Sunday afternoon, February 16 at a private ceremony in Los Angeles. Among the family and friends paying tribute was Sid’s biographer and friend, Cinema Retro’s Eddy Friedfeld, who co-authored Sid’s creative biography, Caesar’s Hours, published by Public Affairs in 2003.
What follows is the eulogy Eddy delivered before Sid's family, friends and colleagues.
Sid said that, like Isaac Newton, he stood on the shoulders of giants, his inspirations- Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton, Laurel and Hardy and W.C. Fields, who helped him develop his career and craft. Today, Sid, we stand on your shoulders- and celebrate your life, your art, your warmth, character, and friendship. You did things no one else could do and you inspired many others, including people in this room, to take the same artistic risks.

Bruce Dern has suggested that today's Hollywood stars are too open with their personal lives.
The Nebraska actor told Parade that Hollywood has changed dramatically since he made his first film over 50 years ago.
"My generation got a chance to work with the legends. But you can't be bigger than life today," he commented.
The actor continued: "Too many people want to know what you do after work. You can't be a mystery anymore."
Dern also offered advice on how to sustain a 50-year career in the movie industry.
"Understand at the very beginning that it's an endurance contest," he said. "Nobody makes it overnight. If they do, they're gone in a decade."
The 77-year-old star is being honoured with the Career Achievement Award at the upcoming Palm Springs International Film Festival.

Hey, did you want to see a pretty young white woman in a glittering minidress tell you through a beaming pageant smile that she hopes she dies before she gets old? Well, tonight’s The Sing-Off has you covered. The theme of this episode is “My Generation,” (which means chart toppers that span the decades [which means nothing]), so we start off with a great big group rendition of the classic Who song (which makes me want to die before I get old [which I’m already a couple of decades too late for, so instead I’ll just drink my weight in bourbon and hope for the best]).Tonight, Ben Folds is the guest mentor, as the groups struggle to fit their unique, sassy brands into songs that … are not unpopular? (What does this theme even mean?) The kinda effeminate big dude in Vocal Rush says, “Ben Folds is gonna … help...

It was only May of last year when Shane Bitney Crone posted a YouTube video called “It Could Happen To You,” a very sad and moving 10-minute clip about his love Tom Bridegroom, who died after falling from a roof while taking pictures with friends. Bridegroom’s family never accepted their son’s gayness and they forbade Crone from attending his funeral, threatening him with violence if he tried.
Now Crone’s harrowing story has moved off of YouTube and into the documentary circuit. Bridegroom (which is out on DVD Nov. 19 and available on Netflix Instant now) aired on Own in early November and inspired rave reviews from Own heroine Oprah Winfrey and scores of celebrity admirers, including President Bill Clinton.
Perhaps that’s not terribly surprising considering Bridegroom‘s director Linda Bloodworth-Thomason, who created Designing Women and Evening Shade as well as several episodes of M*A*S...

Like most Americans of my generation – born in 1973 – I learned about civics from television. On Saturday mornings, our diet of cartoons was regularly interrupted for Schoolhouse Rock, three-minute animated musical lessons on science, grammar and the workings of government. I know that a bill can die in committee before coming to the House for a vote because I can still sing "I'm Just a Bill", an incurable earworm and a pretty thorough overview of America's federal legislative process. We don't teach civics this way anymore and that's probably a good thing. Today's Schoolhouse Rock would have to explain why part of Congress shut down the Us government in a tantrum over a law they didn't like, which is hard to accomplish in three stanzas,...

"My generation of actresses is incredibly lucky. We have people like Meryl Streep and Judi Dench to look up to. Isn't it interesting that those are the actresses we all want to watch? The ones who look real," Time Out magazine quoted Winslet as saying.
"You can see their lives in their faces. Those are truly beautiful women," she added.
