Netflix believes in the power of faith-based film… and in the power of Tyler Perry.
Netflix has extended its creative deal with mega-producer Tyler Perry, in which he’s meant to write, direct, and produce films and series for the streamer, to now include faith-based movies. Perry and Netflix as part of the deal will recruit one of the original hit makers in the current wave of faith-based movies, DeVon Franklin (“Miracles from Heaven”).
Together, Franklin and Perry will produce several faith-based films for Netflix as part of a new multiyear and multi-picture first-look film deal, Netflix announced on May 6.
The first project under the deal will be “R&b,” a modern-day retelling of the story of Ruth and Boaz, one of the Bible’s iconic love stories. Set in Tennessee, “R&b” tells the story of a young woman who escapes the Atlanta music scene to care for an...

Until recently, filmmaker Jon Erwin was the reigning box-office champ for faith-based films with “I Can Only Imagine” and “Jesus Revolution.” Shortly after “Sound of Freedom” opened to $14.2 million, he offered advice to Angel Studios on how it might capitalize that success.
By November, when the child-trafficking drama grossed $250 million worldwide, Erwin lost his bragging rights. He remembers joking with the producers, “It wasn’t supposed to work this much!”
Ego aside, he welcomed the success. As “Sound of Freedom” inspired box-office think pieces and conspiracy-theory controversy, Erwin and partner Kelly Merryman Hoogstraten were in talks with Amazon Studios. Today, their company The Wonder Project is producing a slate of faith-based series and films; Erwin said he’d “be lying” if he believed “Sound of Freedom” didn’t help him get a better deal.

M. Raihan Halim’s “La Luna” will close the 53rd edition of International Film Festival Rotterdam, which has also revealed the lineup of its Tiger competition section, a platform for up-and-coming filmmakers, and Big Screen Competition, a program for more established talent.
“La Luna,” which has its European premiere at the festival, is a comedy about a conservative Malaysian village shaken by the arrival of a lingerie store.
Among the Tiger competition films is British director Justin Anderson’s “Swimming Home,” starring Mackenzie Davis, Christopher Abbott and Ariane Labed. Adapted from Deborah Levy’s novel, it centers on Joe and Isabel, whose marriage is dying when Kitti, a naked stranger found floating in the pool at their holiday villa, is invited to stay. Kitti collects and eats poisonous plants, and Nina their teenage daughter is enthralled by her. The film, which is being sold by Bankside Films, is described as...

Terrence Howard is terrific as a cinema owner who hires his ageing movie idol to help him battle corporate goons
‘There are a lot of things to dislike in this world. Nazis. Modern art. Vegans. But above all I despise vampires.” That’s Dolph Lundgren in a growl, wearing a ludicrous wig, and karate-kicking his way through a horde of undead. Lundgren plays ageing action star Claude Luc Hallyday, a veteran of trashy films with trashier titles (Moses v the Nazis!). It’s a supporting role but Lundgren is the main attraction in Orson Oblowitz’s misty-eyed, sentimental, sometimes silly love letter to cinema. The setting is a gorgeous movie palace where the owner has a thing for tough guy Hallyday, watching his 80s action flicks on repeat – funny pastiche clips shot here as little movies-in-a-movie.
To be fair, Terrence Howard is also pretty terrific as cinema proprietor George, whose...

HBO Max is dead. Long live Max.
The new combined streaming service launched on Tuesday, and in addition to housing all of HBO Max and Discovery+’s content in one place, Max also plays host to a robust library of movies and TV shows streaming in 4K Uhd. At launch, more than 1,000 hours of programming are available in 4K, and Max says more will be added in the coming months.
Right now, you can stream all the “Harry Potter” movies, the “Lord of the Rings” and “Hobbit” trilogies, the “Dark Knight” trilogy, the “Matrix” films, “Dune,” “Joker” and even “The Wizard of Oz” and “Goodfellas” in 4K. Additionally, acclaimed (and cinematic) HBO series like “House of the Dragon,” “Barry” and “Succession” are also streaming in 4K, with additional shows (and seasons) to come.

The first time Cecil B. DeMille parted the waters of the Red Sea, to film the 1923 version of The Ten Commandments, he did it at Seal Beach, CA, just 30 miles down the Pacific coast from Santa Monica. Three decades later, when Paramount Pictures decided to remake the Old Testament tale in Technicolor and VistaVision, the same director returned to do it again, only this time on location on the Sinai Peninsula with thousands of extras provided by the Egyptian army — no matter that the country’s military was rather busy with urgent geopolitical matters at the time. Both versions were massive hits, with the remake serving as the capper to DeMille’s illustrious career.

Chicago – The presence of Sir Ben Kingsley – yes, he was knighted in his native Britain – is the first thing that commands a room. The regal and precise actor, who was awarded an Best Actor Oscar for his definitive performance in “Gandhi,” is back portraying a native of India in his latest film, “Learning to Drive.”
The film is a transition story for the two main characters. Darwan (Kingsley) is a Indian Sikh who gained political asylum in America shortly before September 11th. He is a driving instructor, and encounters a new student in Wendy (Patricia Clarkson). The woman is going through a bitter divorce, and is using the potential of learning to drive to gain more freedom. The two disparate souls help each other in essential ways, and at the same time weather the storm of some extreme life changes.

By rights I should hate the English. Seriously, my background is almost entirely Scots and Irish. I grew up hearing about the troubles the English gave to the Scots and Irish, both in school and from my parents.
Yet I do not, I love the English. How can I hate a country that gave us not only Monty Python but also Benny Hill and the Carry On Films? How can I bear any ill will to a country that gave us writers of the caliber of Ramsey Campbell, Brian Aldiss, Michael Moorcock and J. G Ballard? How can anyone hate a country that not only prizes eccentric behavior but encourages it? Take Mr. Kim Newman for instance, a brilliant writer whose work appears regularly in Video WatchDog and Videoscope Mr. Newman dresses himself, has his hair and mustache styled and speaks in the manner of someone from the 19th Century!

People often talk about over-hyped and under-hyped films, and with good reason, but when a film strikes you as getting exactly the right amount of hype, it’s rare indeed. This is exactly where Exodus: Gods and Kings seems to fall. It’s a film that seems like it should have gotten more attention, especially considering the cast, and the fact that it was directed by Ridley Scott.
It turns out that the film, while actually quite good, delivers to precisely the level of interest the world seems to have dictated is its due.
A thematically unique spin on this, or any other, biblical telling, Exodus starts us off with Moses (Christian Bale) in the prime of his Egyptian Prince-ish-hood. He’s about to take care of some upstart tribe or other with his “brother” Ramses (Joel Edgerton), and a prophecy kicks off Ramses’ dislike of the man he has...

Simultaneously the dullest and the most insulting version of itself it could possibly be. If only it had managed to be campy, that’d be something… I’m “biast” (pro): have been a fan of Ridley Scott in the past…
I’m “biast” (con): …but not so much lately
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
I think I’ve finally figured out what Exodus: Gods and Kings is all about. I don’t mean how it’s a painfully boring, too-literal adaptation of a Biblical fantasy that’s been told plenty often before, and was not calling out to be told again. I mean how it’s possible that Ridley Scott could have made such a stodgy flick, and one that’s utterly tone-deaf to modern sensibilities. Cuz Scott used to be ahead of the curve, not decades behind it: This is the guy who...

Anytime you’re watching Sons of Anarchy — especially this final, gruesome season — you’ve got to prepare yourself for a few casualties. It’s just par for the course with the FX drama, which has racked up an impressive body count in the past six episodes alone.
But there are some Sons characters you just hope will never be in the line of fire, and when they are, it’s all you can do to remember that this is a work of fiction.
This week, I’m of course talking about Bobby, who found himself caught in the crosshairs of an outraged August Marks.

It’s no secret that Biblically-themed blockbusters seem to be on the rise, and “Exodus: Gods and Kings” just unveiled an action-and-tension-packed preview.
Director Ridley Scott did a masterful job of bringing this Old Testament narrative to life on the silver screen, and having stars like Russell Crowe and Christian Bale on his roster certainly didn’t hurt matters.
Other notable actors involved include Joel Edgerton, Sigourney Weaver, Aaron Paul, Ben Kingsley and John Turturro.
“Exodus: Gods and Kings” will hit theaters on December 12th and tell the story of Moses’ efforts to lead the Israelite slaves out of Egypt.

Finally, the first trailer for Ridley Scott's "Exodus: Gods and Kings" is here, and boy oh boy, it promises to be epic! Like Cecil B. DeMille epic! Like a gargantuan "Gladiator!"
Take a look at the Red Sea parting! Listen to the cover of Simple Minds' "Belfast Child!" It's all glorious!
The film brings back to mind Darren Aronofsky's "Noah," but then again, did anyone see the movie? Hopefully, "Exodus" will not suffer the same fate so have faith all ye heathen!
In this adaptation, Christian Bale stars as Moses who dukes it out with Pharaoh Ramses (Joel Edgerton barely recognizable) so he can free the slaves and escape Egypt's plagues. So "Ten Commandments" here we come! But, according to Bale, there will be shocking stuff so Scott and company may be a bit liberal in adding or subtracting passages from the bible. Yup, just like "Noah.

2014 is the year of the Bible. After March’s Flood tale Noah saw a drenched Russell Crowe and Emma Watson fight for survival, another story from the Old Testament is parting the Red Sea and heading to theatres in December.
Ridley Scott’s Exodus: Gods and Kings sees Christian Bale as Moses squaring off against his adopted brother Ramses played by an unrecognizable Joel Edgerton. The 3D film covers the familiar story of the brothers-turned-enemies as Moses rises up against the Pharaoh Ramses in his quest to set 600,000 slaves free while the deadly plagues rain down on Egypt.
Edgerton gives his best Yul Brenner impression while a bearded Bale shows he’s adept at riding a horse and wielding a sword in the heat of battle. The trailer certainly gives new meaning to the term “epic” and is exactly what we have come to expect from the director of Gladiator and Prometheus.

We have the first Exodus: Gods and Kings trailer from director Ridley Scott below, and it’s pretty great to look at. I hated Gladiator and didn’t see Kingdom of Heaven, so Scott’s great movies for me include American Gangster, Matchstick Men, Hannibal and Black Rain. I don’t think any of those films come close to the scale we have here. Watch the trailer and see for yourself.
Here’s the official synopsis:
From acclaimed director Ridley Scott (Gladiator, Prometheus) comes the epic adventure “Exodus: Gods and Kings,” the story of one man’s daring courage to take on the might of an empire. Using state-of-the-art visual effects and 3D immersion, Scott brings new life to the story of the defiant leader Moses (Christian Bale) as he rises up against the Egyptian Pharaoh Ramses (Joel Edgerton), setting 600,000 slaves on a monumental journey of escape from Egypt and...

We’ve seen director Ridley Scott do the whole swords-and-sandals thing before, in 2000′s Gladiator, but now he’s going even further back in time with Exodus: Gods and Kings.
Christian Bale plays a pre-Ten Commandments Moses, going head-to-head with Pharaoh Ramses (Joel Edgerton) to free hundreds of thousands of slaves. Watch the first trailer for the biblical epic below:
Bale told EW’s Sara Vilkomerson that he wasn’t trying to be the second coming of Charlton Heston in the movie. “Charlton Heston does Charlton Heston better than anyone,” he said. “But the biblical account of Moses is extraordinary,...

Ridley Scott's Exodus: Gods and Kings is one of the many bible epics that's set to hit the big screen in the near future. 20th Century Fox finally released the first trailer for the December-release, featuring Christian Bale as Moses and Joel Edgerton as Ramses. Check it out below.
The story of Moses has been adapted before – most brilliantly by Cecil B. DeMille in 1956's The Ten Commandments, which I watched religiously as a kid (call me crazy) – and some of you might be dismissing this film because of its bible roots. But this is a Ridley Scott production and here's what can be said about this short teaser: if anything, it'll be visually stunning. For some reason, the trailer only focuses on Moses relationship with Ramses (them growing up like brothers), and holds back from what came later – Moses taking the people of Israel out of Egypt's bondage.

Having tackled the future with Prometheus and the present via The Counsellor, Ridley Scott is doing an inverse Scrooge for his next film and dipping into the past. The biblical past, in fact, with Moses tale Exodus: Gods And Kings. Scott's latest charts the relationship between Moses (Christian Bale) and Pharaoh Ramses (Joel Edgerton), one that is quickly sent packing with demands, plagues, suffering and a very long walk. Yes, it’s the old story of Moses demanding that pharaoh sets his people free so he can lead them to the Promised Land. Pharaoh, of course, has no intention of releasing his largely slave workforce, and the stage is set for an epic showdown.Scott has opted for old-school scale on this one, constructing massive sets for his Egyptian story, which pumps up the story to match the ambition of the designs, with it all on display in this initial promo.

The first trailer for Ridley Scott's Exodus: Gods and Kings has been released. The film tells the epic biblical story of Moses, who led the Israelites out of Egypt into the Sinai desert and to their Promised Land. Moses is played by Christian Bale in the film, which also stars Joel Edgerton, Aaron Paul, John Turturro, Sigourney Weaver, and of course, Ben Kingsley.
I wasn't sure what I would think about this movie, but judging from this first trailer it looks really good. As you'll see, it's got everything that we love about the films that Scott makes. I especially love the visuals.
The film is set to be released on December 12th.

For what seems like months now, the roster of 2015 Oscar contenders has been set. We’ve got Paul Thomas Anderson’s Inherent Vice, Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar, Tim Burton’s Big Eyes, Angelina Jolie’s Unbroken, David Fincher’s Gone Girl, David Ayer’s Fury and Alejandro González Iñárritu’s Birdman all touching down in the last three months of the year, and any of them could be heavyweights on the awards circuit. But one high-profile blockbuster has been so surprisingly quiet in the past few months that we seem to have counted it out of the race altogether – I’m talking about Ridley Scott’s Exodus: Gods and Kings.
Tonight, we’ve been treated to the first trailer for the Biblical epic, which is sure to get people buzzing about whether it could stand a chance of racking up some nominations against the aforementioned line-up of seemingly strong fall hopefuls.

If Ridley Scott’s upcoming Biblical epic Exodus: Gods and Kings is meant to be a serious, dramatic venture, why can’t I stop sniggering at the new set of posters for it that just hit the web? Maybe it has something to do with the PhotoShop job done on stars Christian Bale and Joel Edgerton, surely one of the shoddiest since that god-awful Magic in the Moonlight poster with Colin Firth’s weird wandering eye.
That unfortunate shortcoming aside, fans of Biblical epics have reason to be excited for Exodus: Gods and Kings, which is sure to be the most crowd-pleasing in the genre this year (sorry, Noah). Bale stars as Moses, while Edgerton is donning some serious guy-liner to take on the part of Rhamses.
A new trailer is set to arrive later today, so we’ll have a better idea of what to expect from Exodus: Gods and Kings soon enough.

Why yes, that is Christian Bale you see in that photo, riding his valiant steed into battle as...Moses, the biblical figure who led the Israelites out of slavery of Egypt and through the desert for 40 years. It's not what usually comes to mind when you think of Judaism's most famous prophet. But for his newest film, "Exodus: Gods and Kings," Ridley Scott has rounded up a remarkable cast, including Joel Edgerton, Sigourney Weaver, Ben Kingsley, John Turturro and Aaron Paul, to bring the biblical story to the big-screen in what looks like the most epic way possible. "What I thought I knew about Moses I didn’t really,” Scott told Entertainment Weekly in a recent interview. "Either I wasn’t paying attention in Sunday school or I had forgotten. I was knocked out by who he was and the basics of the story—it has to be one of...

Director Ridley Scott’s next epic film, Exodus: Gods And Kings, is coming to theaters later this year, but here’s a first glimpse at what’s going down in the land of Egypt. (via EW)
Starring Christian Bale as Moses and Joel Edgerton as Ramses, the film covers the Israelites’ exit from Egypt under the hand of Moses.
This latest incarnation of the story follows in the footsteps of the classic Cecil B. DeMille The Ten Commandments (1956) starring Charlton Heston, Yul Brynner, Anne Baxter, and Edward G. Robinson.
Ridley Scott confers on-set with Sigourney Weaver, who portrays Tuya in this behind the scenes, on set photo.
The two previously worked on Alien and 1492: Conquest Of Paradise.
Also starring stars Aaron Paul, John Turturro and Oscar-winner Ben Kingsley, 20th Century Fox will release the film in Us theaters December 12th and UK cinemas on December 26th.

Besides 8 new images from Ridley Scott’s Bible epic “Exodus,” the studio has also made the title officially “Exodus: Gods and Kings.” What hasn’t changed is that the film still stars Christian Bale as Moses, with Joel Edgerton as baddie Pharaoh Ramses. The supporting cast includes Sigourney Weaver, Ben Kingsley, John Turturro, Indira Varma, and Aaron Paul. As for the film (via EW): A pivotal figure in the Old Testament, Moses was a prophet who fought against Pharaoh Ramses to free 600,000 slaves, whom he then led through the desert to escape from Egypt and its 10 deadly plagues. (Along the way he parted the Red Sea and unveiled the Ten Commandments.) But the biblical journey was even more epic than the director remembered. “What I thought I knew about Moses I didn’t really,” Scott says. “Either I wasn’t paying attention in Sunday school or I had forgotten.

We've seen just one image of Christian Bale from Ridley Scott's next film, the Biblical epic Exodus: Gods and Kings. But now some more images from the film have surfaced, showing off the size and scope of the film following Bale as Moses as he begins a revolution against Egyptian Pharaoh Ramses II, played by Joel Edgerton (The Great Gatsby). We finally get to see Edgerton looking much more tan, along with our first look at Sigourney Weaver as Tuya, mother of Ramses, and Ben Kingsley as well. There's a great story at EW about Aaron Paul having an adverse reaction to the camel smell on set, but can you spot him? "I guess I didn't pay attention in Sunday School," Ridley Scott told Entertainment Weekly recently about the depth of the story he'll explore in "Exodus: Gods And Kings." "There was so much I had forgotten. It's a marvelous human story about change. There are massive questions here. You treat it with great respect." The starry cast of Christian Bale, Joel Edgerton, Aaron Paul, Ben Kingsley, John Turturro and Sigourney Weaver are part of the ensemble that will chronicle the exodus of the Israelites from Egypt as led by Moses and related in the Old Testament Book of Exodus. It’s been a long time since a Ridley Scott film made Oscar waves, but 20th Century Fox will release "Exodus: Gods and Kings" on December 12th, right in the heart of Oscar season. We appear to be in a new period of sword and sandal epics. There have been a recent spate of films featuring Hercules, the ill-conceived Pompeii, the slightly better conceived 300: Rise of an Empire, and of course, Aronofsky’s Noah. Soon entering the fray will be Ridley Scott’s Exodus: Gods and Kings, in which Mr. Scott goes boldly where Cecil B. DeMille has gone before.

Thou Shall Not Attempt to Outdo Charlton Heston. Okay, so that’s not an official Hollywood commandment, but the prospect of taking on the role of Moses in Ridley Scott’s Exodus: Gods and Kings (in theaters Dec. 12) did give Christian Bale pause. “Charlton Heston does Charlton Heston better than anyone,” says Bale. “But the biblical account of Moses is extraordinary, and there was lots of room for us to go to places that [Heston’s movie] The Ten Commandments never dreamed of going.” (Bale’s biggest stipulation before signing on? “No fake beards,” he says with a laugh.)

He's back! After being the big plot twist in Iron Man 3, the Marvel menace known as Trevor Slattery is returning in the Marvel One Shot All Hail The King. He was subdued by Tony Stark, and sent to prison as part of a major conspiracy of terrorism, but what's prison like when you're not the world's most feared criminal, but rather a fraud whose been called out? Not too bad it seems! In the clip, courtesy of USA Today, we see Slattery (Ben Kingsley) getting acquainted with the criminal population of Seagate Prison. And while some aren't impressed by this odd little man with a distinctive haircut and Liverpudlian accent, others are geeking out as he re-enacts one of The Mandarin's catchphrases. But hey, he's not your meat puppet. English thespian Ben Kingsley has taken on long list of iconic roles. In TV movies he's played Moses and Sweeney Todd.
