Laura Dern and Reese Witherspoon have been close friends since playing mother and daughter the set of 2014’s Wild and bonding during its corresponding five-month press tour.
So imagine the surprise Dern’s mother Diane Ladd felt when she turned on HBO’s Big Little Lies to find the two actresses playing heated rivals facing-off in an affluent northern California town.
Of course like any mom, Ladd — a decorated actress herself — was on the side of her daughter, right?

Using music as a tool of protest isn’t anything new. But with the current political climate, we have a sneaking suspicion that music in the U.S. is about to get ever-so-slightly more angry. Here are the most important ones from the genre’s history in America.
“I Didn’t Raise My Boy to Be a Soldier” (1915)
One of the first anti-war pop songs, this song was a hit in 1915, selling 650,000 copies. It also drew scorn from a number of people, including Theodore Roosevelt, who said, “Foolish people who applaud a song entitled ‘I Didn’t Raise My Boy...

Tonight’s host is Brie Larson: indie film actress, recent Oscar winner, and former singer of pop punk album Finally Out of P.E, whose single She Said featured pretty heavily on the rotation of my first ever square iPod nano. Larson brought a solid enthusiasm to an episode that featured a heavier amount of good sketches than bad, proving that maybe long hiatuses are good for this show, since their cast and crew, if legend is to be believed, subsist on very little sleep and very much junk food. Glad those guys got some rest, and brought some laughs to this enjoyable Mother’s Day episode. Cold Open: Church Chat: Dana Carvey’s Church Chat Lady returns to interview Ted Cruz and Donald Trump with her signature judgy passive aggression. Was it even really a crime? I was on the short stairwell that connects the 11th—the top—floor of the Bendix Building, a Garment District block on the corner of Maple St and 12th St, when I spotted the square of white-patterned black cotton. Into my pocket it rapidly went, compensation for the fact that my quest for rooftop access had been stymied. An orange plastic sign across the door up ahead, warning (bluffing?) of alarms that would ring out if opened, dissuaded further progress. I wasn't too disheartened—my unplanned visit to the Bendix Building had yielded sufficient delights.

Today the first wave of titles playing at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival were announced and while the majority of the titles are new to me the names in front of the camera most certainly are not as you'll see the likes of Michael Fassbender, Nicole Kidman, Saoirse Ronan, Guy Pearce, Cobie Smulders, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Margot Robbie, Chris Pine, Kristen Wiig, Jack Black, James Marsden, Billy Crudup, Ezra Miller, Jemaine Clement, Sarah Silverman, Toni Collette, Vincent Cassell and many, many more among the titles featured. I have collected several photos from many of the films playing the festival, which will take place from January 22 - February 1 in Utah next year. Today's selection includes the U.S. Dramatic Competition, U.S. Documentary Competition, World Cinema Dramatic Competition, World Cinema Documentary Competition and Next program. I'll be adding a few more pictures soon enough, but for now, have a look and see what stands out.

Warner Bros. was originally going to release Seventh Son from director Sergei Bodrov in January 2014, but after Legendary bounced from WB to Universal the film was in limbo until finally re-emerging on the release calendar on February 6, 2015 and now with Universal distributing. Today the first trailer for the film since the distributor switch has arrived, hoping to reignite what little interest there was for this picture in the first place outside of some passing interest in the cast. Based on Joseph Delaney's young-adult novel series, the story centers on Thomas Ward (Ben Barnes), the seventh son of a seventh son, who becomes the apprentice to an exorcist named Master Gregory (Jeff Bridges). Together the two combat ghosts and witches in the 1700s, but they must soon battle with Mother Malkin (Julianne Moore), the queen of evil, as Tom falls for a young witch named Alice (Alicia Vikander). Spirituality in cinema has been expressed in various ways where the feel-good aspect of faith-based films are put to great use for emotional manipulation. The triumph and tragedy of religious themes in the movies have never been championed as much as when the protagonist at the helm is a loving nun. Film nuns come in all varieties: nurturing, helpful, complex, obstinate, crusading and flawed.

A review of tonight's "The Americans" coming up just as soon as I wake up up to clean the fridge... "I'm not here to be saved." -Philip The driving question of "The Americans" season 1 was "How real is this marriage?" And at different points in the season, Philip and Elizabeth would have each given you very different answers. That tension hasn't entirely gone away in season 2 — witness the mess caused when Elizabeth hears about Clark and Martha's sex life — but for now they are treating each other as a genuine spouse, and instead the question they keep asking themselves is an even harder one: "What kind of a person am I becoming?" It's not that they are questioning the mission itself. Elizabeth never has, and when Philip has at times, it's been more about wanting to protect his family than about believing they are on the wrong side of things.

Damn it, Blake Shelton – why did you have to be so awesomely offensive in your Christmas special last year? Thanks to your side-splitting Claymation spoof with Larry the Cable Guy, in which you shot Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and incinerated Sam the Snowman, NBC must've been scared off. In your place, Kelly Clarkson gave us a boring, misguided and uneven hour of television that served as little more than a commercial for her new holiday album, Wrapped in Red. So horrific. Vanderbilt University is in shock after four of their football players were indicted on August 9 on five counts of aggravated rape each for allegedly raping an unconscious 21-year-old girl in her dorm room in June.
A black cloud is looming above Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn., where four players – safety Cory Batey, 19, defensive back Brandon Banks, 19, receiver Jaborian “Tip” McKenzie, 19, and tight end Brandon Vandenburg, 20 — from the school’s football team were charged for the rape of an unconscious, 21-year-old student on August 9.

Until last week there wasn't much to see from The Seventh Son--just a few set photos. I have not read the The Wardstone Chronicles books, and I really didn't know what to expect when the trailer was released. It is an interesting fantasy world and the there are some very talented actors involved, like Jeff Bridges and Julianne Moore. The movie centers around Ben Barnes, who is "the seventh son of a seventh son" and becomes Bridges' apprentice. I want to like this film, but somehow I'm not completely sold on it. Maybe when more footage is released I'll get off the fence.
Synopsis: John Gregory, the seventh son of a seventh son and the local Spook has protected he country from witches, boggarts, ghouls and all manner of things that go bump in the night. However John is not young anymore and has been seeking out an apprentice to carry on his trade.

"If you see a witch, kill it," Jeff Bridges declares in the new trailer for Seventh Son, and in this case, he's referring to even those witches that look as lovely as Julianne Moore.
The book-turned-movie includes monsters, witches and warriors, so it's no wonder that Game of Thrones star Kit Harington Narnia actor Ben Barnes also star in the film. Bridges plays Master Gregory, aka the Spook, who acts as a sort of Sensei for young Thomas Ward (Barnes), who is to help battle the evil forces led by Mother Malkin (Moore).
The movie is based on the 18th century adventure story that is centered around young Tom and his first great challenge against the powerful Mother Malkin, who escapes her confinement while the Spook is away.
Seventh Son hits theaters Jan. 17, 2014. After watching the trailer, do you think the film will do the book justice? Sound off in the comments.

Warner Bros. recently delayed the upcoming fantasy adaptation The Seventh Son from an October release date to January 17, 2014. Not really a good sign, but it would be easy enough to understand why a potentially mediocre fantasy film may do better in the early months rather than lost in the thick of the awards and Halloween season. I was something of an odd kid growing up so it may have made sense that I liked odd comedians. My memory was that I was the only person in our household who liked Ernie Kovacs; I must have been about 7 or 8 when his TV show was on. I thought he was funny and just so damn strange.
The same must be said as well for Jonathan Winters who died Thursday at the age of 87. A remarkable improviser, he could become anyone or anything. Hand him a prop or a hat and he could do four or five characters one after the other, morphing from one to the next in a heartbeat. Famously, Jack Paar just gave him a stick and Winters turned in character after character , including a terrific imitation of Bing Crosby.

1972,
The Western, at its creative and commercial peak – the late 1960s-early 1970s – proved itself an astoundingly pliable genre. It could be molded to deal with topical subject matter like racism (Skin Game, 1971), feminism (The Ballad of Josie, 1967), the excesses of capitalism (Oklahoma Crude, 1973). It could be bent into religious allegories (High Plains Drifter, 1973), or an equally allegorical address of the country’s most controversial war (Ulzana’s Raid, 1972). Westerns could be used to deconstruct America’s most self-congratulatory myths (Doc, 1971), and address historical slights and omissions (Little Big Man, 1970). They could provide heady social commentary (Hombre, 1967), or simple adventure and excitement (The Professionals, 1966). They could be funny (The Hallelujah Trail, 1965), unremittingly grim (Hour of the Gun, 1967), surreal (Greaser’s Palace, 1972), even be stretched into the shape of rock musical (Zachariah, 1971) or monster movie (Valley of Gwangi, 1969).

Here's our first look at Jeff Bridges and Julianne Moore in the fantasy adventure film The Seventh Son. The movie was previously titled The Last Apprentice, which is based on the The Wardstone Chronicles book series by Joseph Delaney.
Bridges plays Master John Gregory, known as a "Spook" who imprisons an evil witch named Mother Malkin (Moore) uses some kind of crazy blood magic. I've seen Bridges play a lot of different characters over the years, and wear a lot of crazy outfits. But I don't recall ever seeing him dressed up as a medieval exorcist. That being said... he looks awesomely badass! Here's what the actor had to say about his character in an interview with USA Today,
He's an interesting cat. He's appreciated for keeping evil away, but he's also a frightening figure to the townspeople. When you mess around with darkness, some of that gets in you,...

Two very quick clips from The Bay were shown to the audience. It wasn't much but it definitely had people squirming. The first featured tiny Isopods eating a fish from the inside out, and the second showcased the same Isopods crawling beneath a little girl's skin and she's reaching for help.
The Bay stars Will Rogers, Stephen Kunken, Kether Donohue, Frank Deal, and Kristen Connolly, and was directed by Barry Levinson.
Look for it in theaters and available on VOD November 2, 2012, from Roadside Attractions

Hopefully you’ve had a chance to catch last week’s episode of Syfy’s Being Human, the first episode featuring Suren, vampire queen Mother’s vampire daughter, played by Dichen Lachman. She brings an otherworldly vibe to the part and to the show. She took time out of her schedule last week to answer some questions from the press.
SciFi Mafia: Thanks so much for being on the call. I was a big fan of Dollhouse. I’m so sorry it ended so soon.
Dichen Lachman: Oh yes, but then I can’t do Being Human.
SciFi Mafia: Exactly, so we’re happy about that. I’ve seen your first episode of Being Human and to have you in the part, it seems like it’s tailor made for you. Do you know if they made any changes to the character once you were cast?
Dichen Lachman: I don’t know.

Season 2 of Syfy's "Being Human" premieres on Monday, January 16th, and as a follow-up to the two-part interview we posted earlier this week with showrunners Anna Fricke and Jeremy Carver (Part 1 here and Part 2 here), the network brought out the big guns - stars Sam Witwer, Sam Huntington, and Meaghan Rath - for a teleconference touching upon what fans have to look forward to from the trio.
There was quite a bit of banter among the participants and a spoiler or two we were asked not to reveal (mostly regarding Huntington's Josh and his girl friend Nora, played by Kristen Hager) so we separated the wheat from the chaff and bring you the following highlights:
Q: What about the storyline? Does Season Two feel different due to the stories you’re getting to tell?

Being human: nobody ever said it was easy. But when you’re a ghost, a vampire, and a werewolf, like the three twenty-something roommates of Being Human, it may be completely impossible. The second season of Being Human picks up as Aidan (Sam Witwer), Sally (Meaghan Rath) and Josh (Sam Huntington) continue to struggle with their supernatural double lives. By turns frightening, witty, and romantic, Being Human continues to explore what it means to be human through the eyes of these outsiders.

Last week we brought you Part 1 of an in-depth interview with "Being Human" executive producers Anna Fricke and Jeremy Carver, and as promised, we now have Part 2 ready for your reading pleasure. Fricke and Carver continue discussing what we can expect in Season 2, if any other creatures make an appearance in the series, the ins and outs of vampire politics, and lots more!

How much do you get to play, or how much do you enjoy playing, with the traditional knowledge of these monsters and then adding new stuff to it?

With both the Us and UK versions of "Being Human" fast approaching their season premieres, it's no wonder our news feed is full of stories about both of them. Up next we have a sneak peek of the Season 2 premiere of Syfy's "Being Human", entitled "Turn This Mother Out".
In the clip we see Josh (Sam Huntington) expressing to Aidan (Sam Witwer) and Sally (Meaghan Rath) that he’d like everyone to try and act normal while his girlfriend, Nora (Kristen Hager), is around, which means no more flying mugs and vampire talks about Mother. Nora enters the room and asks if Sally is present and mentions that she found an invite to her high school reunion in the trash. While Nora can’t hear Sally’s response, she’s informed by Josh that she has reservations about going.

Earlier this week Syfy hosted a lengthy conference call with "Being Human" executive producers Anna Fricke and Jeremy Carver so they could tell us what's coming up in the new season, including a few guest stars to be on the lookout for, along with providing some new promo photos. Read on for Part 1 of the call (Part 2 will follow next week), and look for the Season 2 premiere of "Being Human" on January 16th.
Q: Last season many of the plots were similar to the U.K. show; can we expect that the U.S. show will branch off on its own this season?
Anna Fricke: Yes, we made a decision this year to do completely original storylines.
Jeremy Carver: That said, I think given that the show obviously has its roots in the British version, there's always going to be an inevitable crossover just by virtue of swimming in the same pond.

The Walking Dead Torn Apart Web Series Webisodes 1-6. Greg Nicotero‘s The Walking Dead: Torn Apart (2011) web series stars Lilli Birdsell, Rick Otto, Rex Linn, Danielle Burgio, Madison Leisle, and Griffin Cleveland. The Walking Dead: Torn Apart’s plot synopsis: this web series “tells the tale of one of The Walking Dead’s most iconic walkers”, whose name we find out is Hannah.

If you're like most people I work with in companies, the demands come at you from every angle, all day long, and you have to make difficult decisions without much time to think about them. What enduring principles can you rely on to make choices that reflect openness, integrity and authenticity?
Here are ten that work for me:
1. Always challenge certainty, especially your own. When you think you're undeniably right, ask yourself "What might I be missing here?" If we could truly figure it all out, what else would there be left to do?
2. Excellence is an unrelenting struggle, but it's also the surest route to enduring satisfaction. Amy Chua, the over-the-top "Tiger Mother," was right that there's no shortcut to excellence. Getting there requires practicing deliberately, delaying gratification, and forever challenging your current comfort zone.
3. Emotions are contagious, so it pays to know what you're feeling. Think of the best boss you ever had.

Julianne Moore is heading for toil and trouble in her latest role, as she has been cast in Sergei Bodrov’s big screen adaptation of teen book series, The Wardstone Chronicles. The film, entitled The Seventh Son, already has Jeff Bridges (Tron: Legacy, True Grit) on board and now boasts Moore in the role of Mother Malkin – a sinister witch who uses blood magic!
The film is based on the first installment in the book series, The Spook’s Apprentice, written by British author Joseph Delaney. It tells the story of the seventh son of a seventh son, Thomas J. Ward. Due to his rare situation (I personally don’t know many seventh sons of seventh sons – only, like 10), Ward has the unique gift of being able to see various creatures “of the dark” including ghosts, witches, boggarts and more.

The young adult series “The Last Apprentice”, or “The Wardstone Chronicles” as it was originally published in the UK, is going to go forward toward a big screen adaptation with actress Julianne Moore in a key role. Originally this film was to be called The Spook’s Apprentice and it had Alex Pettyfer, Jennifer Lawrence, and Jeff Bridges signed on. Things have changed. Pettyfer and Lawrence have both dropped out of the project, Lawrence for Hunger Games reasons and Pettyfer perhaps for the same. The film is now tentatively titled The Seventh Son and while Jeff Bridges is still attached, it’s going to have to find new young actors to fill out the cast. Moore has been cast as the character of Mother Malkin, who is apparently a great and powerful witch. Bridge’s character is known as The Spook, and he is an expert in exorcism. Seeing as the film was originally title The Spook...

Scream 4
Opens: April 15th 2011
Cast: Neve Campbell, David Arquette, Courteney Cox, Mary McDonnell, Emma Roberts Director: Wes Craven
Summary: Sidney Prescott, now the author of a self-help book, returns home to Woodsboro on the last stop of her book tour. There she reconnects with family and friends, but it also brings about the return of Ghostface which puts the whole town in danger.
Analysis: Back in late 1996 when I first began covering film news, "Scream" was released and became more than just a sleeper hit. After years of genre movies being relegated to direct-to-video status, this comedic slasher spawned the biggest surge in the horror film genre since "Halloween" almost two decades before. Its post-modern stylings and witty self-aware dialogue went on to be a big influence on films and television in general.
Yet the "Scream" series itself never could quite capture that glory again. By the time the...

Earlier this month we learned that Alex Pettyfer (I Am Number Four) has signed on to star in Warner Bros' big screen adaptation of Joseph Delaney's best-selling book series "The Last Apprentice." While Jennifer Lawrence (Winter's Bone) is in talks to join the cast, Just Jared now confirmed that Jeff Bridges (Tron Legacy, True Grit) has finalized his deal. Synopsis of the first book: For years, the local Spook has been keeping the County safe from evil. Now his time is coming to an end, but who will take over? Many apprentices have tried... Some floundered, some fled, some failed to stay alive. Just one boy is left. Thomas Ward. He is the last hope. But does he stand a chance against Mother Malkin, the most dangerous witch in the County? Pettyfer will play Thomas Ward, Lawrence would play the witch, and Bridges will be the Spook, who trains Ward to become an exorcist.

Just the other day we talked about the fact that Alex Pettyfer, Jennifer Lawrence and Jeff Bridges might take roles in The Last Apprentice, based on the novel series of the same name by Joseph Delaney. (They're known as The Wardstone Chronicles in the UK.) Well, the film has been renamed The Seventh Son, and it looks as if Jeff Bridges is the first to formally take the plunge. JustJared [1] says the other two actors still have offers out, and with Jeff Bridges signed I wonder how that will sway the negotiations. To recap from Adam's report [2] earlier this week, here's the synopsis of the first book in the series, called The Spook's Apprentice: For years, the local Spook has been keeping the County safe from evil. Now his time is coming to an end, but who will take over? Many apprentices have tried… Some floundered, some fled, some failed to stay alive.

In what could reasonably be deemed a move to capitalize on the success of Twilight, studios are buying up the rights to any and all young adult book series with a built-in following. And apparently, they're all vying for Alex Pettyfer to headline the resulting adaptations. Pettyfer already starred in the first film of the failed franchise Alex Rider: Operation Stormbreaker -- based on a young adult novel -- and next up he has I Am Number Four from director DJ Caruso -- also based on a young adult novel -- and the modern day "Beauty and the Beast" reimagining Beastly -- based on, you guessed it, a young adult novel. He was also set to be starring in an adaptation of the young adult series The Mortal Instruments, but now, it looks as though he's moved on... To another adaptation of a young adult series.
