We know the drill: When Hollywood actresses hit a certain age, they’re pushed off the industry conveyor belt. Some find a few roles, or perhaps a gig as a brand ambassador, spokesperson, or fitness guru. That’s the world of Elisabeth Sparkle, as played by Demi Moore, in Coralie Fargeat’s body-horror industry satire “The Substance.” However, this film represents the best role in the 61-year-old Moore’s career.
In the mid-1990s, Moore was a star after “St. Elmo’s Fire,” “Ghost,” “A Few Good Men,” “Indecent Proposal,” “Disclosure.” She hit her financial peak with the 1996 “Striptease” — $12 million, which inspired snarky asides of “Gimme Moore” — but the reviews were bad and the box office not much better. Her career shifted into smaller movies and smaller roles (including a standout turn in 2011’s “Margin Call”), many of which didn’t deserve her presence and, well, sparkle.

After 27 years, Demi Moore returned to the Cannes red carpet following the world premiere of her body horror The Substance, starring Margaret Qualley. Directed by French director Coralie Fargeat, the horror thriller has made waves, with critics deeming it Moore’s best big-screen role in decades.
The plot revolves around a new product, The Substance, which promises people to transform into the best version of themselves. However, it comes with a twist and the new horror is definitely not for the faint-hearted, as critics deemed it among the best films the genre has to offer.

On the occasion of International Women’s Day, Rumer Willis, daughter of Bruce Willis shared a beautiful breastfeeding photo with her 10-month-old daughter Louetta Isley Thomas Willis. Jon Hamm is going from the unhinged madness of Fargo to West Texas for Taylor Sheridan’s forthcoming Paramount+ series Landman. The Tag, Mad Men, and Mean Girls star joins Billy Bob Thornton as a primary cast member for a contemporary oil rig drama. Based on the 11-part podcast Boomtown, Landman is “an upstairs/downstairs story of roughnecks and wildcat billionaires fueling a boom so big, it’s reshaping our climate, our economy and our geopolitics.”
Jon Hamm plays Monty Miller in Sheridan’s Landman, a goliath in the Texas oil industry who has a long-standing personal and professional relationship with Thornton’s Tommy Norris. The Paramount+ series continues to strike it rich in the casting department, with stars like Demi Moore, Ali Larter, Michelle Randolph, Jacob Lofland, Kayla Wallace, James Jordan, Mark Collie and Paulina Chávez.

Back in the soap opera glory days of the 1980s, I remember well Demi Moore‘s short stint on the popular “General Hospital.” With her distinctive gravelly voice, movie star beauty and strong personality, it was obvious that the small screen couldn’t contain her, and that she would go on to bigger things.
Demi Gene Guynes was born on November 11 in 1962 in Roswell, New Mexico. Following a difficult childhood, she left school her junior year and did some modeling before meeting and marrying musician Freddy Moore, with whom she co-wrote three songs. She had a couple of small film roles before landing the “General Hospital” gig in 1983. Then a series of popular films beginning with “Blame It On Rio” in 1984 led to an impressive string of blockbuster films throughout the 1980s and 1990s, making her one of the biggest stars of the era.

Editor’s Note: This article previously stated that Disney CEO Bob Iger was at the company’s Upfronts today in NYC, based on accounts from eyewitnesses outside the venue. The exec was not in New York Tuesday, and references to him have been removed from this story. We regret the error.
It was a tale of two coasts today, as WGA picketers and their allies targeted Disney’s upfront presentation in New York and also the company’s Burbank lot in Los Angeles. And the two scenes were very different.
This morning at the Disney upfront, pickets were being kept a solid two blocks away from the venue on 10th Ave. Here’s the view looking south from the main entrance:

Since 1980, UCLA film grads and industry veterans John J. B. Wilson and Mo Murphy have honored the very worst in cinema with the Razzie Awards. Here’s a look back to the worst pictures of the last four decades.
“Can’t Stop the Music” (1980)
The Golden Raspberry Awards got their start by recognizing this musical comedy, a justly mocked quasi-biopic of the Village People.
Rotten Tomatoes score: 8%
“Mommie Dearest” (1981)
Faye Dunaway goes full camp as Joan Crawford in a docudrama whose comedy was often unintentional.
Rotten Tomatoes score: 53%
“Inchon” (1982)
This bloated, over-budget Korean war film starring Laurence Olivier as Gen. Douglas MacArthur was an epic turkey.
Rotten Tomatoes score: 0%
“The Lonely Lady” (1983)
Pia Zadora followed her mysterious (and widely mocked in retrospect) Golden Globe win for “Butterfly” with this adaptation of a trashy Harold Robbins novel about a schoolgirl/wannabe screenwriter.

In the mid-nineties, very few stars were bigger at the box office than Demi Moore. Ghost, Indecent Proposal, and Disclosure were all mega-hits, and for a while she was the highest-paid actress in Hollywood, earning $12.5 million for Striptease. For some reason, this caused a huge backlash against Moore, who was perceived as greedy, despite her male co-stars (and former hubby Bruce Willis) all earning paychecks that dwarfed hers. She was dubbed "Gimme Moore" by the media, and when…...

On Netflix, the biggest fresh release is the third season of Cobra Kai, which has been a hit for the service since making the move from YouTube. Critics are already dishing out praise for the latest block of episodes of The Karate Kid spinoff, which had its premiere date bumped up by a week. The first month of a new year is a good time to make a new impression. And that’s just what Netflix seems set on doing with its list of new releases for January 2021.
The streamer is coming out strong with a third season of Cobra Kai, formerly of YouTube Premium. The next installment in Daniel Larusso and Johnny Lawrence’s story is set to arrive…eventually. Netflix has not unveiled a released date yet but it will be during this month. While Cobra Kai is the highlight among Netflix’ original series, it’s not the only one by a long shot. Last year’s fun Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous returns for a second season on Jan. 22 and it will be accompanied by Fate: The Winx Saga. Also, if you’re a fan of things that will one day be .gif’ed to death, the Nicolas Cage-hosted History of Swear Words drops on Jan.

Time and time again during this year’s pandemic, movie studios have had to make the best of a bad situation. HBO Max’s list of new releases for December 2020 comes along with the most extreme example yet.
WarnerMedia undoubtedly had big plans for Wonder Woman 1984 when it scheduled it for a holiday release last year. After moving it to the summer, however, the conglomerate had to delay its theatrical release time and time again. Now HBO Max is the lucky winner of the saga, as it gets to premiere the long-awaited sequel on its servers on Dec. 25.
While Wonder Woman 1984 is definitely the headline this month, there are some other intriguing streaming options for HBO Max in December. The month plays host to a whole host of high-powered documentaries like Heaven’s Gate: The Cult of Cults (Dec. 3), Alabama Snake (Dec. 9), and the Tiger Woods documentary Tiger (Dec.

We’ve now got just a few days left of November, so it’s time to take a look ahead at everything that’s headed to the major streaming networks in December. As it’s Christmas, Netflix, Disney Plus, HBO Max, Hulu and Prime Video have extra special hauls ready to gift to their subscribers this holiday season, with literally hundreds of new movies and TV shows dropping over the course of the month.
All the various sites – excepting Disney Plus – are serving up a ton of newly licensed films on December 1st. Netflix, for instance, is adding such classics as E.T., Little Nicky and the first three Jurassic Parks. Meanwhile, HBO Max is offering up The Shawshank Redemption, Shaun of the Dead and a bunch of Final Destinations, while Hulu and Prime Video, which share a lot of the same movies, are treating users to a host of iconic...

Just like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon and Disney Plus, HBO Max is adding a ton of great new titles to give you some festive treats this holiday season. Demi Moore was unable to come to the Venice Film Festival, which is hosting a series of virtual talks, titled “Life Through a Different Lens: Contactless Connections,” with Mastercard, which the actress launched Wednesday. But she assured the moderator that she is doing really well, and staying positive, despite the threat of Covid-19.
“I know how fortunate I am,” she said, during the conversation, accompanied by a cameoing pet and a vintage doll of Marlene Dietrich. “We are all going through this, but we are not having the same experience. I feel timid to say that, but I am finding goodness in this challenge. I tend to look for what something is giving us as opposed to what it is taking away.”
Listing favorites from “The Philadelphia Story” to “Kramer vs. Kramer,” Moore shared what has inspired her throughout her career. “When I think of ‘Indecent Proposal,’ ‘Disclosure,’ ‘G.I. Jane’ and even ‘Striptease,...

HBO Max is continuing to pull from Warner Bros.’ incredible back catalogue of movies, with August bringing a huge number of new titles to the streaming service. With over 130 new pieces of content, the list of upcoming arrivals encompasses classic films of all kinds, from Oscar winners to comedies, horrors to family pics and, of course, tons of blockbusters.
A highlight for many users will probably be the glut of Batman films coming to HBO Max at the start of the month. Every cinematic outing for the Caped Crusader from 1989’s Batman starring Michael Keaton to 2008’s The Dark Knight with Christian Bale (which just celebrated its 12th anniversary this weekend) are going up on the site. It’s August 2020 and that can only mean one thing: HBO Max is about to enter Lovecraft Country.
Over the years HBO (and by the transitive property its new HBO Max streaming offshoot) has grown accustomed to debuting a buzzworthy new TV show or limited series every couple of months. For August 2020 that will almost certainly be Southern Gothic horror series Lovecraft Country. The J.J. Abrams and Jordan Peele-produced thriller arrives on August 14 on HBO and HBO Max.
Other strong HBO Max originals arriving in August include the documentary Class Action Park (release date Tbd), Seth Rogen-starring comedy An American Pickle (Aug. 6), and finales for I’ll Be Gone in the Dark, Doom Patrol, and Perry Mason.
Of course, HBO Max is designed to house much of WarnerMedia’s content across many mediums. That means some recent movies on note like Jojo Rabbit (Aug. 1), Richard Jewell (Aug. 8), and Birds of Prey (Aug.

In the six previous years of our tournament to name the year’s most profitable film, Deadline has always launched the contest around the Ncaa basketball tournament. But this year is drastically different. Tonight was supposed to be the national championship game, at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, but of course the entire tournament was canceled. Not only are there no tip-offs, but theatrical exhibition also remains shut down as the nation takes cover from the coronavirus. With weekend box office reporting on hold until theaters’ expected re-opening in mid-June, we’ve tried to accommodate industry appetite for P&l data by expanding 2019’s field — from 10 last year to the top 25, building toward the Most Profitable champion. (See last year’s tournament here.) With exhibition struggling to meet its monthly overhead costs and studios funneling their current theatrical releases to streaming, the tournament serves as a reminder of the financial upside of a strong theatrical release,...

Along with a good portion of the social-media savvy world, Bravo devoured Detroit waitress and stripper Aziah “Zola” Wells’ 148-tweet story of sex trafficking, kidnapping and attempted suicide when it went viral in 2015. There was, she thought, the makings of a compelling film here, one that pulled back the curtain on a part of society that such movies as “Showgirls” and “Striptease” often glamorize.
“It sat at the intersection of ‘Blue Velvet’ and ‘Bodak Yellow,’” Bravo says. “Right in that sweet spot where David Lynch and Cardi B meet. It was its own genre.”
But there was a problem. Other directors, many with bigger résumés, got there first. Initially, the movie adaptation of Wells’ Twitter saga was to be directed by James Franco. However, the job opened up after Franco became embroiled in a sexual-harassment scandal in 2018 and decided to step away from the project. The resulting film, alternately funny and fierce,...

This is how a seductive heist crime drama can be such a memorable tribute to the incredible Martin Scorsese?s unforgettable Goodfellas and remain sexy and touchy till the very end. Jennifer Lopez stuns with a comeback that is worthy of top honors in the acting department at least.

When it comes to how we’ll be watching movies — or, at least, watching serious dramas for adults — in the future, here are two stark and timely contradictory facts:
1. Last week, as the Toronto International Film Festival drew to a close, a deal that had been in the rumor stage for a while was finally announced: “Bad Education,” a tense and enthralling Long Island white-collar-crime noir, starring Hugh Jackman in a head-turning performance, was sold for a whopping $17 million — the kind of deal that makes headlines out of Sundance, and that in Toronto may stand out even more, since Tiff, with so many major films coming into the festival already having distributors, is less of a high-profile market. That said, the “Bad Education” deal, juicy as it sounds, was not (in all likelihood) for theatrical release. The film was sold to HBO, which means that it will probably be shown only on HBO.

Though Stx’s “Hustlers” and Warner Bros.’ “The Goldfinch” couldn’t be more different in terms of genre or style, the two new releases prove the divergent paths that mid-budget movies can take at the box office.
Both films arrived last weekend in an environment that has been increasingly hostile to anything that’s not of the superhero ilk or the umpteenth iteration of a longstanding franchise. “Hustlers” beat expectations with a solid $33.2 million debut, while “The Goldfinch” bombed with just $2.68 million. Those results are a sobering lesson as studios continue to scout for material that appeals to moviegoers interested in more than just blockbuster fare. “Hustlers” cost a moderate $20 million to produce, meaning the movie only needed to do modest business to turn a profit. “The Goldfinch” carried double that budget with a price tag above $40 million. Amazon co-financed the movie, which will help mitigate damages, but it still...

In the wake of a summer where Disney IP steamrolled over movies big and small, the industry wondered if we were truly living in a hell of haves and have-nots at the box office. Was it just all about event films succeeding on the big screen, with anything that was low-to-mid-budget counter-programming intended for streaming?
Gradually, as we got out of the belly of Lion King, Spider-Man: Far From Home (which was made with Disney’s Marvel), and Hobbs & Shaw, we saw more original counter-programming pop at the box office – i.e. Once Upon a Time In Hollywood, and Good Boys – bust through. Now, further underscoring that a diverse slate works theatrically, especially among adults, is Stx’s Hustlers this weekend, which notched a $33.2M opening –their best debut ever and a record for Jennifer Lopez among her live-action pics– 33% ahead of where tracking was seeing it.

While everyone is expecting New Line’s It: Chapter 2 to tee us off into what is expected to be a lucrative fall-holiday season with at least a $90 million-$110 million start, one shocker that hit tracking last Thursday: Stx Entertainment’s Jennifer Lopez-Constance Wu stripper crime drama came on with a hot $24M-$26M projection.
Typically we post projections Asap for tentpoles, but this one gave us pause: Really?

Demi Moore has booked a recurring role in Brave New World, the upcoming USA Network drama series from Ucp and Amblin Television based on the Aldous Huxley’s groundbreaking 1932 novel.
Written by David Wiener, Grant Morrison and Brian Taylor, Brave New World imagines a utopian society that has achieved peace and stability through the prohibition of monogamy, privacy, money, family and history itself. Alden Eisenreich, Harry Lloyd and Jessica Brown Findlay also star.
Moore will play Linda, the brash, hard-living mother of John the Savage (Ehrenreich).
As citizens of New London, Bernard Marx (Lloyd) and Lenina Crowne (Brown Findlay) have only ever known a rigid social order, a perfect pharmaceutical called Soma, and a culture of instant gratification and ubiquitous sex. Curious to explore life beyond the strictures of their society, the two New Worlders embark on a vacation to the Savage Lands, where they become embroiled in a harrowing and violent rebellion.

Demi Moore was honored with Peggy Albrecht Friendly House’s Woman of the Year Award on Saturday night, and used the occasion to recall turning her life around early in her career. “I was spiraling down a path of real self-destruction and no matter what success I had I just never felt good enough,” she said to those in attendance at the women’s recovery center’s ceremony at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.
“I had absolutely no value for myself and this self-destructive path, it really quickly brought me to a real crisis point,” she added, per Variety. “It wasn’t clear at the time, maybe it was divine intervention, but two people who I barely knew stepped up and took a stand for me and presented me with an opportunity, which I guess was more like an ultimatum — unless I was dead, I better show up.”

Rest in peace, Burt Reynolds. The iconic actor has died at age 82, Us Weekly confirmed on Thursday, Sept. 6. The Smokey and the Bandit star passed away after going into cardiac arrest at a Jupiter, Fl hospital with his family by his side, a source revealed to the news outlet. Fans have been concerned about Burt's health in recent years after he stepped out looking unrecognizable on multiple occasions even though his manager recent claimed it's been "perfect." Years ago, Burt broke his jaw and lost 30 pounds by not eating and reportedly became addicted to painkillers for several years. In May 2009, he underwent back surgery and in February 2010 had a quintuple heart bypass. (Photo Credit: Getty Images) However, Burt never wanted sympathy from anyone through all his ups and downs. "Burt is one of the last of his era — a genuine tough guy," an insider once told Closer. "The last thing...

Poor Demi Moore! The A-list actress' American Express credit card was allegedly stolen recently, Entertainment Tonight revealed. The news outlet has reported that in mid-March, a man named David Matthew Read stole the card and allegedly spent a whopping $169,000 on it at stores like Nordstrom and Saks Fifth Avenue in La (there is reportedly video surveillance to prove it). (Photo Credit: Getty Images) But Demi wasn't the one to notice the unusual statement. Apparently, her assistant reached out to the credit card company to report the fraudulent acts but soon learned someone had already reported the card stolen and requested a replacement — but it wasn't her. "D.M.'s personal assistant stated that neither she nor D.M. made this report or request," said the document obtained by Et. Read allegedly requested a new card via FedEx and he was somehow able to pick it up... In early April, Read was...

Hollywood is no stranger to parallel thinking — or parallel movies, as evidenced by a slew of similar films that hit the big screen around the same time, from “Armageddon” and “Deep Impact” to “Volcano” and “Dante’s Peak,” even “Striptease” and “Showgirls.” Rudyard Kipling’s classic story “The Jungle Book” was headed to a similar fate in 2016, when Disney and Warner Bros. both set release dates for their own (very different) movie versions of the oft-adapted tale.
Eventually, the Andy Serkis-directed “Mowgli,” the darker of the two films, moved to October 2018, while Jon Favreau’s more light-hearted “The Jungle Book” opened in April of 2016, making almost a billion dollars in the process. But don’t worry about Serkis’ film — which features a stacked cast of performance-captured talent, including Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett, Benedict Cumberbatch, Naomie Harris, Jack Reynor, and Serkis himself — which is set to open later this year,...

The #MeToo movement notwithstanding, I’ve been worried about women lately, perhaps because I’ve been seeing too many movies. At a time when women are achieving more muscle in managing their lives and careers, the female characters they portray in movies lack both muscle and self-esteem. Women need a movement – any sort of movement. They also need help at the box office.
Let’s start with Melissa McCarthy, Charlize Theron and Amy Schumer. In Spy, McCarthy three years ago displayed hilariously lethal skills, but in her new Life of the Party she’s a mopey mom whose daughter is embarrassed by her and whose husband dumps her. Meanwhile, Theron, the delectably homicidal heroine of Atomic Blonde, becomes a downbeat, defeated housewife in Tully. Schumer, who devours men in Trainwreck, is dopey and delusional in I Feel Pretty, cast as a woman whose self-esteem is tied to her (imagined) svelte figure.

English-born film editor Anne V. Coates, who won an Academy Award for cutting David Lean’s classic “Lawrence of Arabia,” has died. She was 92.
She earned that 1963 Oscar: In addition to its impressive balance of imposing desert landscapes and vivid human drama (culled from some 31 miles of footage), the nearly four-hour epic contains one of the most famous “match” cuts in movie history, from a shot of Peter O’Toole blowing out a match to a majestic desert sunrise.
Coates went on to receive four more Academy Award nominations, for editing Peter Glenville’s “Becket” (1964), David Lynch’s “The Elephant Man” (1980), Wolfgang Petersen’s “In the Line of Fire” (1993) and Steven Soderbergh’s “Out of Sight” (1988).
Her other credits include “Young Cassidy” (1965), “The Bofors Gun” (1968), “The Public Eye” (1972), “Murder on the Orient Express” (1974), “What About Bob?” (1991), “Chaplin” (1992), “Congo” (1995), “Striptease” (1996) and Soderbergh’s “Erin Brockovich” (2000).
