Jane Schoenbrun’s “I Saw The TV Glow,” out in limited theaters now, is about teenagers Maddy (Brigette Lundy-Paine) and Owen (Justice Smith), who bond over a “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”-style TV show, “The Pink Opaque.” As they continue to get more into the lore of the television show, the edges blur between the reality of their lives and “The Pink Opaque.”
Schoenbrun has described “Buffy” as a pivotal show for them while they were growing up, so creating their version of that felt like giving their 13-year-old self a gift. So getting “The Pink Opaque” just right was monumental.
The premise of “The Pink Opaque,” like most ’90s shows, is perfectly silly and immediately nostalgic. Isabel (Helena Howard) and Tara (Snail Mail’s Lindsay Jordan) meet at summer camp and realize they have an ancient, psychic connection. When camp ends, the two are able to meet on a...

With We’re All Going to the World’s Fair, Jane Schoenbrun crafted an unsettling yet deeply affecting portrayal of alienation in the internet age.
Backed by A24, their sophomore feature, I Saw the TV Glow, explores similar themes of dysphoria through a wider scope without sacrificing the personal resonance.
I spoke with Schoenbrun about how the movies complement one another, recreating the 1990s on film, their love of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and more.
Bloody Disgusting: In your own words, what’s I Saw the TV Glow about?
It’s a movie about these two kids [played by Justice Smith and Brigette Lundy-Paine] stuck in the suburbs who are obsessed with the kind of TV I was obsessed with when I was a kid stuck in the suburbs, which was a trend specific to maybe the era that the movie takes place in, which is the 1990s. When TV series 9-1-1 aired its 100th episode on April 4, the Los Angeles-set ABC firefighter drama, known for pitting its characters against tsunamis and hijacked cruise ships, did something so wild, so unexpected, that even day-one fans were left shocked: They had one of their main characters kiss another man.
The main character in question — self-avowed reformed sex addict Buck (Oliver Stark) — has been a fan favorite since the Ryan Murphy series premiered in 2018. The young firefighter quickly became known for his womanizing ways, which were often contrasted with his...

Being an independent film fan is full of surprises, as each slate of festival releases brings a new wave of emerging filmmakers, breakout stars, and established actors playing against type in bold films. But it’s hard to imagine that even the biggest cultural omnivore could have predicted that 2024 would spark a renaissance in Fred Durst’s acting career.
The Limp Bizkit frontman, who helped pioneer the nu metal genre throughout the ’90s by combining hip-hop and rock on albums with poetic titles like “Three Dollar Bill, Y’all,” and “Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water,” has been a sporadic presence in movies for the past quarter century. Aside from a handful of small roles in the 2000s, he’s best known to cinephiles as the director of “The Fanatic,” the infamous 2019 stalker thriller starring John Travolta as an autistic man named Moose that somehow manages to be more offensive than it sounds.

“I’d direct an Agent Smith origin story,” Jane Schoenbrun tossed out on X, formerly known as Twitter, on the morning of April 3. The shout-out to the AI antagonist of “The Matrix” was posted in the hours after Warner Bros. announced a fifth film in the science-fiction franchise, with writer-director Drew Goddard taking the reins from series creators Lana and Lilly Wachowski, who both came out as trans after the release of the original trilogy.
“I was always kind of like, ‘Oh, they would probably let me do a “Matrix” movie, if I asked.’ Because trans,” jokes Schoenbrun, who identifies as nonbinary and uses they/them pronouns. The director keeps a casual tone, but their interest in Agent Smith is enthusiastic and thoughtful.

Writer/Director Jane Schoenbrun’s feature debut, We’re All Going to the World’s Fair, captured the isolating nature of online culture via creepypasta horror through non-narrative, visual storytelling. Schoenbrun continues that core theme of dysphoria in their sophomore effort, I Saw the TV Glow, now armed with a bigger budget that allows the filmmaker to get even more personal while evolving their voice and visual style to an intoxicating degree. I Saw the TV Glow offers a layered and authentic portrait of identity, wrapped in ’90s nostalgia and surreal imagery that embeds itself deep into your psyche.
I Saw the TV Glow charts the life of Owen (Justice Smith) over multiple decades, initially introduced as an early teen (Ian Foreman) in 1996. Owen is a dysphoric and friendless outcast until he bumps into a slightly older student and fellow outcast, Maddy (Brigette Lundy-Paine), at his high school. The pair quickly bond...

What do we want from a spinoff? More time with a favorite supporting character, as with Frasier or Better Call Saul? An expansion of a compelling mythos, as with Star Trek: Deep Space Nine or House of the Dragon? Or perhaps a deeper exploration of some potent themes, as with Rugrats offshoot All Grown Up?
Buffy the Vampire Slayer spinoff Angel fulfilled all of those criteria and more.
Premiering in 1999, with its first four seasons running concurrently with Buffy, Angel’s eponymous hero was a reformed vampire, the ex-lover of his parent show’s titular Slayer. The spinoff imported several other characters from Buffy, transplanting them from the small town milieu of Sunnydale to the sinister sprawl of Los Angeles, a darker, more complex setting where demons and vampires rubbed shoulders with high powered lawyers and politicians. It occupied an interesting position in the cultural landscape, airing alongside shows like...

What was done many years ago may find its way back to the modern cinema, and brand new movies and shows drawing their inspiration from the cult classic don’t cease to prove it.
With all numerous and versatile horror films hitting cinemas every month, it doesn’t come as a surprise that literally all of them borrowed something very peculiar from other thrilling, yet successful stories.
It’s not exactly the case of Jane Schoenbrun’s upcoming A24 horror-thriller I Saw The TV Glow, there’s something in there that actually derives from the 1997 cult supernatural drama. You still may not notice it though.
Speaking to IndieWire ahead of the movie’s theatrical release, Schoenbrun revealed that the storyline of the upcoming thriller’s main character Owen was partially inspired by Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s season 6 episode called Once More With Feeling.

Have you ever loved a TV show? Like, really loved it, to the point where your identity became wrapped up in it, where you engaged in life-or-death debates over characters and story arcs, strongest seasons and best episodes? Where the minutiae and the mythology of it became something between a shorthand language and a shared secret?
Jane Schoenbrun has; judging from their new film I Saw the TV Glow, their small-screen obsession of choice was the exact same as ours in the late ’90s, Buffy the Vampire Slayer. (Big up Sunnydale,...

"Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." was a changed show in its second season. In its early days, the Marvel Television series suffered from an identity crisis. Season 1 started out trying to emulate co-creator Joss Whedon's previous work, yet it played as a pale imitation of shows like "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and especially "Firefly," following a ragtag team of misfits on weekly adventures in their flying home base. However, the one-two combo punch of Whedon stepping away from the series and "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" blowing up the Marvel Cinematic Universe's status quo near the end of season 1 proved to be just the creative boost the show needed.
Upon returning for season 2, "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." had gained a newfound confidence. Its characters began to take on greater dimensions, it really embraced the idea of being a show about everyday people trying to keep the world safe, and it even started...

10. What We Do in the Shadows (2019–2024)
We often picture vampires as the ultimate nocturnal predators, masters of seduction and illusion, don’t we? The entire charm of the Wwds’s bloodsuckers is how humane they are.
Sure, they only survive on drinking blood, but they’re just as funky, daft, insecure, and troubled as us — and that makes them all the more relatable.
You can watch What We Do in the Shadows on Hulu, Max, Apple TV, Disney Plus, and Prime Video.
9. Hemlock Grove (2013–2015)
If you need a simple and unsophisticated conflict in a vampire story, all you need to do is throw in some werewolves. Hemlock Grove takes this classic move up a notch and surrounds its titular town with a thick mist of uncertainty, mystique, and intrigues — all the while maintaining the tone of the otherworldly murder mystery.
You can watch Hemlock Grove on Netflix, Apple TV, and Prime Video.

The series about the lives of high school students ran for exactly ten years – from 1990 to 2000. The most successful seasons of Beverly Hills, 90210 were watched by 14.5 million viewers in the US alone, and by the same number of fans around the world.
During this time, the main characters evolved from shallow high school students to complex personalities, dealing not only with common teenage problems, but also with more serious issues such as alcoholism and domestic violence.
Despite the fact that the main characters became world famous, Beverly Hills, 90210 was the first and last major project for most of the cast.

Tori Spelling began acting in the early 1980s, but her real breakthrough came on Beverly Hills, 90210, which was produced by her father, Aaron Spelling. Although Tori stated that she was cast on a general basis and under a different name, she took an...

Seven years after the premiere of “Twin Peaks: The Return,” and the third season of David Lynch’s small-town-turned-cosmic nightmare is still reverberating for a new generation of filmmakers.
So it’s apt that Jane Schoenbrun’s “I Saw the TV Glow,” a suburban lucid dream of a movie about how the media we consume can then consume us, feels like the first film to truly capture the dread and dissonance of Lynch’s reinvention — a series that was itself a comment on how you can truly never go home again, and how rose-colored memories become warped and monstrous by the passage of time.
“I Saw the TV Glow” follows Owen (Justice Smith), a gloomy New Jersey teen obsessed with a YA TV series called “The Pink Opaque,” about two physically apart teen girls who share a psychic connection that could help them defeat a moon-faced monster called Mr. Melancholy.

If you watched TV shows in the late 90s and early 2000s, you will remember that most popular shows did not focus on a consistent plot. Each episode told its own arc and there was no need to know the characters’ backstory.
It was a pretty smart move: a person could jump into the show at any time. However, one series changed the way the TV projects were made – Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
Today, Fewer and Fewer Viewers Remember Buffy
Buffy the Vampire Slayer is Joss Whedon's cult series about a high school girl who leads a double life. During the day she studies and spends time with her friends Xander and Willow, and at night she goes out into the abandoned streets of the city and the cemetery to kill demons.
Today, only hardcore fans in their 30s seem to remember Buffy, despite the show’s cult status.

It's no secret to any horror buff that the genre's greatest offerings aren't always defined by critical prestige. But when it comes to horror television, the uphill battle that new shows face to overcome skepticism and garner positive reviews is even steeper. This is aptly demonstrated by the TV landscape of the '90s, in which writers and directors galvanized the medium by venturing into as-yet-unexplored depths of scariness, violence, and production value. However, creators weren't always able to translate that broadening of horizons into favorable critical notes.
Sure, it was the decade of "Twin Peaks," "The X-Files," Stephen King's "It," and all the bold new offerings for which such beloved programs paved the way by evidencing audiences' appetite for serious, well-made horror TV. But it was also the decade of a vast number of critical flops, which have been either largely forgotten or marred by extremely negative reputations...

Sydney Sweeney has starred in a string of hits of late, and her Hollywood career has truly taken off. The actress has delivered power-packed performances, showcasing her range as an artist. From her role as a troubled nun in Immaculate to a lovestruck woman in Anyone But You, Sweeney has been winning hearts.
Unfortunately, not everyone in the industry feels that way about the actress. Carol Baum thinks that the Euphoria star is not worth the hype she has been generating of late. Sweeney, who is known for speaking her mind, clapped back, and the drama has only intensified since then.

Sydney Sweeney caught a stray last week when veteran Hollywood producer Carol Baum said at an event that Sweeney is “not pretty” and “can’t act” — and that her hit rom-com “Anyone but You” was “unwatchable.”
A representative for Sweeney has now fired back at Baum, saying in a statement shared with Variety: “How sad that a woman in the position to share her expertise and experience chooses instead to attack another woman. If that’s what she’s learned in her decades in the industry and feels is appropriate to teach to her students, that’s shameful. To unjustly disparage a fellow female producer speaks volumes about Ms. Baum’s character.”
Baum, a longtime Hollywood producer and executive behind films including “Dead Ringers,” “Father of the Bride” and “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” made the disparaging comments about Sweeney during a discussion in Pleasantville, N.Y., with New York Times film critic Janet Maslin.

Madame Web star Sydney Sweeney is a hugely in-demand actress right now, but one top producer doesn’t understand the hype. Carol Baum, who served as executive producer on films such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Father of the Bride, slammed the White Lotus actress during a discussion after a screening of her 1988 film Dead Ringers. According to the Daily Mail, Baum said she “didn’t get” Sweeney, who rose to fame playing Cassie Howard on HBO’s hit teen drama Euphoria and has gone on to star in films such as Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, The Voyeurs, Reality, Anyone But You, and Immaculate. “I was watching on the plane Sydney Sweeney’s movie because I wanted to watch it,” Baum continued, referring to Will Gluck’s 2024 romantic comedy Anyone But You. “I wanted to know who she is and why everybody’s talking about her.” She added,...

Actor Nathan Fillion’s star power grew thanks to starring in shows like Castle and The Rookie. But before those two hit shows, he considered his sci-fi cult hit Firefly as the show that kick-started his career.
Nathan Fillion revealed that no one heard of him before ‘Firefly’ Nathan Fillion | Albert L. Ortega/Getty Images
Fillion initially didn’t know he’d be able to make a living from acting. In an interview with Closer, he confided that he saw acting as more of a side gig when he went to school. But getting an actual acting job that paid decently changed Fillion’s trajectory.
“I was going to finish off schooling and four months before graduation I got a job on a soap and moved to New York City. I did three years there, moved to Los Angeles on the advice of Bob Woods, who played my uncle on the show.

The People's Joker. In The People’s Joker (2022), Vera Drew makes her feverish entrance into the cluttered morass of the DC Comics cinematic multiverse by bursting through a trapdoor. Having garnered recognition as an Emmy-nominated television editor for outré comedians such as Tim Heidecker, Eric André, Sacha Baron Cohen, and Tim Robinson, Drew serves as director, co-writer, editor, lead actress, and cosmic prankster for her cinematic debut. The anarchic DIY spectacle, recently released theatrically after two years in intellectual-property limbo, mines the contradictory supervillain mythologies of the Joker to narrate Drew’s journey of self-discovery as a trans woman in the fractious world of alternative comedy. After Warner Bros. sent a cryptic letter of disapproval regarding the film’s flagrant recontextualization of the Batman franchise a day before its debut at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival, it was pulled from the program. Drew and her battalion of masked vigilantes have commandeered...

When I was 9 years old, I was obsessed with the Disney Channel monster-of-the-week series, "So Weird." The show centered on a strong-willed teenage girl named Fiona "Fi" Phillips (Cara DeLizia) who used the power of information gathered from online research to help make sense of ghosts, monsters, folk legends, and other supernatural occurrences that seemed to follow her and her rockstar mom while they traveled the country on her comeback tour.
I wasn't yet a teenager and I certainly didn't own a laptop, but I could feel deep in my bones that I was just like Fi Phillips, and often fantasized what it would be like to live her life. Sometimes, the wind would blow a little too strong as I walked home from school or I'd hear a disembodied voice that was probably the result of my own imagination, and the line between my favorite TV show and my own life would blur.

The Matrix franchise is one of the most beloved ones when it comes to the action film genre. Predominantly known for revolutionizing the action genre with well-choreographed action sequences and slow-motion effects, the franchise has a cult following with fans from across the world.
With its ensemble cast led by Keanu Reeves, the franchise has four movies so far. However, that is about to change soon if recent updates are anything to go by. While it is no secret that Reeves’ potential attachment to any project is enough for fans to get excited, this time around, that does not seem to be the case.

The Matrix universe is expanding with a new movie helmed by Drew Goddard.
The writer and director, best known for his work on titles like The Martian, The Cabin in the Woods, and Netflix’s Daredevil series, will both direct the film and pen its screenplay. Goddard has plenty of experience with sci-fi, having gotten his start penning episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, and Lost.
Currently untitled, the project will be the first Matrix film to not directly involve creators Lana and Lilly Wachowski, though the former will serve as executive producer. Plot details are currently being kept under wraps, but it sounds like Goddard has a strong vision to extend the franchise.

In 2016, I attended a conversation between filmmaker Joss Whedon and actor Mark Ruffalo, who Whedon recruited to star in "The Avengers" as Bruce Banner/The Hulk. Hosted by the Tribeca Film Festival, this was the same one where Whedon said "Avengers: Age of Ultron" made him feel like "a miserable failure."
During the talk, Whedon confessed how he feels that he lacks the eye of a great director. This moment of vulnerability by Whedon stuck out to me because it echoed criticism of his work I'd absorbed online as a budding cinephile. These critics would argue that Whedon's directing never matured past middling TV-level craft, as seen on "Buffy The Vampire Slayer." At the time, I was one of the Whedon faithful and stubbornly refused to see it, but my mind has been cleared now.

The 1990 television adaptation of Stephen King's horror novel "It" may be best known for Tim Curry's performance as Pennywise, who made an entire generation seriously terrified of clowns, but it would be nothing without the heart and soul of the Loser's Club. In the 1950s, a group of misfit kids growing up in Derry, Maine are brought together, partially because they don't belong anywhere else, but also because they happen to be targeted by the malevolent force that haunts their town, stealing and murdering its local children. Together, they have to face off against Pennywise to stop the killing once and for all. That's what they think, anyway. But despite defeating Pennywise as children, they're forced to return to Derry as adults and once again confront the terrors of their youth.

Once any story hits the internet, it doesn’t just belong to the people who made it; fan art, fiction, edits, music, tattoos, and all sorts of reinterpretation follow, to say nothing of the barrage of reboots and remakes the corporations running the entertainment world are so enamored of. But there’s something interesting that happens, from both an artistic and an audience perspective, when much loved characters get transposed into a medium where their range of expression and even their physicality is different.

The animated X-Men are about to make their return to TV in "X-Men '97." This Disney+ series is basically a thirty-year-late sixth season of 1992's "X-Men," the first cartoon about the Marvel Comics superhero team.
The "X-Men" comics kept chugging along through highs and lows while their animated counterparts were in limbo, though. At SXSW 2024, Marvel previewed the comics' future. A relaunch is coming to "X-Men" in Summer 2024 under the banner "From The Ashes," the follow-up to the ongoing "Fall of X." There'll be three primary series at first:
"X-Men" by Jed MacKay and Ryan Stegman. Cyclops and Magneto will lead a traditional X-Men superhero team based in Alaska.
"Uncanny X-Men" by Gail Simone and David Marquez. "Outlaw" lovebirds Gambit and Rogue head to New Orleans with Wolverine, Nightcrawler, and Jubilee in tow.
"Extraordinary X-Men" by Eve Ewing and Carmen Carnero. Set in Chicago, Kitty Pryde and Emma Frost...
