Sex & Nudity

  • A boy in a voice-over scene mentions seeing a girl flying through the air during a tornado. He claims that he looked up her skirt.
  • Two women are topless for an entire scene & are shown jumping on the bed with tape covering their nipples.
  • A man grabs a woman's breast and says she has a lump, no nipples are seen
  • Two women are shown topless putting tape over their nipples. Breasts clearly visible. One of them pulls the tape off and admires her breasts in the mirror.
  • A photo is shown of two women flashing their breasts. Shown in close up.
  • A stack of adult magazines is flipped through. Non-explicit nudity is briefly shown.

Violence & Gore

  • A young girl references being assaulted by her father or another relative in voiceover. Not graphic, especially since some of the audio is masked by sound design, but possibly distressing.
  • A mother holds a handgun to the back of a little boy's head while he's lifting weights.
  • Two teenage boys hunt stray cats for money throughout but only one killing is seen at the very start where one is briefly drowned. Though this is distressing, no actual violence towards cats occurred on set. There are references in dialogue to more gruesome ways of killing cats and sight of several dead cats, including two boys whipping a dead cat.
  • The script implies heavily that a disabled woman is being pimped by a relative.
  • There is very brief but somewhat bloody sight of the aftermath of self-harm in a montage, as the word "SLAYER" is seen cut into a person's arm.
  • There is some footage shown of a destructive tornado. A large animal (possibly a cow) is shown falling from a rooftop to the ground, dead. This is supposedly actual footage.
  • Two boys shoot at another boy with BB guns.
  • The main characters break into an elderly woman's house and pull euthanasia on her. The woman is sleeping, and one of the boys flips the switch to "off" on the woman's life-sustaining machine.
  • Two brothers have a fistfight. It's only mildly violent and it is done in a playful manner since it clearly isn't serious.
  • Though some of the violence may sound very graphic not much of it actually is. The scenes concerning cats being hurt are nowhere near as violent as they sound. Though it should be noted that these scenes are still not okay as cats are being harmed.

Profanity

  • Some derogatory words aimed at homosexual characters and minority characters, including "f*g", the "N" word, and "queer."
  • 64 uses of fuck, 16 uses of shit, 13 uses of pussy, 11 uses of ass, 9 uses of bitch, 6 uses of queer & asshole, 5 uses of hell & goddamn, 4 uses of dammit, 3 uses of nigger, 2 uses of fag & titties, 1 use of damn, piss, wetback, cunt and tits. 1 use of coochie, 1 use of pervert, some more mild name-calling like ugly.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Some characters are seen smoking, including a young boy.
  • In one scene, two boys share an inhalant that they sniff to get high.
  • Characters are drunk/intoxicated at times..

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • Overall, this film is full of weird imagery, and the whole atmosphere of "Gummo" is generally tense and strange. There are many scenes that are not particularly graphic or explicit but are still very disturbing due to the out of place and odd imagery. Many frightening subjects are covered in scenes of this film.

Spoilers

The Parents Guide items below may give away important plot points.

Violence & Gore

  • Two brothers are featured who are said to have been Jehovah's witnesses who murdered their parents.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • We get a scene of two boys killing an old lady by flipping off her life support machine (see "Violence & Gore"). This is extremely disturbing and may frighten younger viewers.
  • The intro features what appears to be a super 8 home movie of a tornado wreaking havoc on a small town. We get a voice-over of a little boy discussing seeing people and animals get killed, including a girl flying through the air. It is mentioned that dead people are seen in trees with their necks broken. This may bother some viewers.
  • Some of the younger children in the film are said to be neglected by their parents, including a boy who mentions that his grieving mother ignores him but sometimes makes him toast to eat, a little girl lamenting about being harassed by an older man in her home, presumably her step-father or mother's boyfriend, and a little girl who lives with two older sisters aspiring to be strippers (their parents are never seen). This might bother some viewers.
