Whoopi Goldberg seems to have sided with Miranda Lambert’s controversial concert remarks after the country singer called out a group of fans for taking a distracting selfie during her concert on Saturday.
On Tuesday’s episode of “The View”, Goldberg exited the stage, telling her co-hosts Joy Behar, Sara Haines, Sunny Hostin and Alyssa Farah Griffin, “I’m leaving,” appearing to be upset during a heated debate about Lambert’s headline-making incident.
“They don’t want to be there,” Goldberg told the panel about the concertgoers. “If they paid money for the tickets, they came to see her. So if she’s singing, at least show a little respect.

In honour of the 25th anniversary of Angela Bassett’s 1998 flick “How Stella Got Her Groove Back”, the actress, and director, Kevin Rodney Sullivan, compare the difference between filming sex scenes at the time to nowadays.
During a Q&a at a special screening of the film at the 2023 Tribeca Festival on Saturday, Sullivan recalled feeling nervous over the sex scenes between Bassett and her onscreen love interest, co-star Taye Diggs, because he wanted to ensure they were showcased “from a woman’s point of view.”
“It’s my fantasy, he has to be naked not me,” Bassett, 64, said of her character.

“How Stella Got Her Groove Back” star Angela Bassett and director Kevin Rodney Sullivan didn’t hold back Saturday night at a Tribeca Festival screening and talkback celebrating the movie’s 25th anniversary. Going long in a lively discussion moderated by Torell Shavone Taylor at the Sva theater in New York City, the two got candid about choreographing Stella’s sex scenes, casting at 20-something Taye Diggs to “fulfill the fantasy” and trusting an Oscar-winning scene partner like Whoopi Goldberg to hold the film together.
The beloved romantic comedy from 1998 stars Bassett as Stella Payne, a 40-year-old businesswoman who takes a well-needed vacation in Jamaica, only to fall for a handsome man half her age, Winston Shakespeare (Diggs). Bassett explained that casting Diggs as Stella’s lover for the movie was key to its success — and that it was a tight race between he and two other actors.

Angela Bassett is a force of nature in Hollywood. Her talent, strength, and longevity in an industry known for its fleeting moments of fame speak to her relevance and influence. Her rise as a distinguished African American actress in Hollywood has had an impact on the entertainment industry and the representation of Black talent. Bassett’s breakthrough role came in 1993 when she played Tina Turner in What’s Love Got to Do With It. Her performance earned her a Golden Globe nomination. This performance was instrumental in breaking away from the tropes that plagued Black actresses in Hollywood, demonstrating that they could carry films of prestige.
In 1998, Angela Bassett brought the lead character of Stella Payne to life in the film adaptation of Terry McMillan’s novel How Stella Got Her Groove Back. In the first feature film from Kevin Sullivan, Bassett’s portrayal of a successful 40-year-old stockbroker who takes a well-deserved vacation in Jamaica,...

Robert De Niro is going from Cannes to Tribeca, as the world-renowned actor prepares to kick off the 22nd edition of the film festival he co-founded in 2001 with Jane Rosenthal and Craig Hatkoff. It runs from June 7 to 18 across New York City.
De Niro recently appeared at Cannes Film Festival for the world premiere of Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon,” in which he stars opposite Leonardo DiCaprio. The Oscar-winning actor said there were conversations about premiering the Western crime epic at Tribeca, but that idea never materialized.
“We did talk about it a little bit, but it was always Cannes,” De Niro told Variety. “There was talk about whether it should go in competition or out of competition. And we decided out of competition. It made more sense.”

Newer theatrical releases arriving on the streamer in June include “TÁR,” “Armageddon Time,” and “M3GAN.”
TV premieres to look forward to include Boots Riley’s “I’m A Virgo” and the fourth and final season of John Krasinski’s “Jack Ryan.” “Crazy Rich Asians” arrives early in June, followed by “Interstellar” for all Christopher Nolan and Matthew McConaughey lovers. Even though “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” doesn’t release in theaters until November, all four “Hunger Games” films land on Prime Video this June. Perfect timing — maybe even with a reread...

With its list of new releases for June 2023, Prime is bringing a handful of Amazon Originals and many recent movie hits to the fold.
It’s actually quite a busy month for non-American programming in Amazon Originals department. Shows and movies like Deadloch, My Fault, and Medellín all originate from outside the U.S. and U.K. For the American and British crowd, however, the streamer is debuting two big tentpoles.
The first is I’m a Virgo on June 23. Acclaimed director Boots Riley’s TV followup to Sorry to Bother You will tale the surreal and satirical tale of a giant in Oakland. That will be followed by the more conventional (assumedly) fourth season of Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan on June 30.

Twenty years ago, Alisa Lynn Valdés released her first novel, "The Dirty Girls Social Club." It was a runaway success, and the writer published 12 more books in its wake. Then she took a 10-year break, coming back with "Hollow Beasts," a suspenseful murder mystery that is out now as an e-book and hitting bookshelves on Apr. 1. The novel introduces us to a new protagonist - rookie game warden and former poetry professor Jodi Luna.
I catch up with Valdés while we hike out to the spot where she originally dreamed up her new novel. Looking back, Valdés isn't sure if writing "The Dirty Girls Social Club" was selling out or not. She styled that first book after what she heard the publishing industry wanted - a Latina Terry McMillan (who wrote beloved titles like "Waiting to Exhale" and "How Stella Got Her Groove Back").

“Hey Auntie. We love you.”
Five simple words from presenters Michael B. Jordan and Jonathan Majors, directed at Angela Bassett, who was nominated for the best supporting actress Oscar during Sunday night’s ceremony.
As the “Creed III” co-stars took the stage to present the award for best cinematography — two categories after the supporting actress prize went to “Everything Everywhere All At Once” star Jamie Lee Curtis — they took a moment to speak to Bassett, seated before them.
“Hey Auntie,” Jordan began, echoing his dialogue from 2018’s “Black Panther,” as his character Erik Killmonger slyly introduced himself to Bassett’s Queen Ramonda.
Majors picked up from there, adding: “We love you.”

Chicago – It’s Oscar Week, as the 95th Academy Awards will be broadcast on Sunday, March 12th, 2023, on ABC-tv. Nominated for Best Supporting Actress is Angela Bassett for “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” her second nomination after “What’s Love Got to Do with It?” in 1994.
After earning her Masters Degree at the Yale School of Drama in the 1980s, Bassett took to the New York stage, most notably in two of August Wilson’s “Pittsburgh Cycle” plays. She expanded with parts in film and TV, including “Boyz in the Hood” (1991). Breakthrough recognition would come in the next couple of years, as Bassett co-starred with Denzel Washington in “Malcolm X” (as Malcolm’s wife Betty Shabazz) and her Oscar nominated role as Tina Turner in “What’s Love Got to Do with It” (1993).

The 2023 awards season started out with a bang for Angela Bassett. She won the Golden Globe and Critics Choice Award for playing Queen Ramonda in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” and looked to be on her way to taking home her first career Oscar. But when she lost the BAFTA to Kerry Condon (“The Banshees of Inisherin”) and the SAG Award to Jamie Lee Curtis (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”), awards pundits started wondering aloud whether Bassett could really win Best Supporting Actress for a — gulp — comic book movie? Are superhero flicks pretentious enough to win over all those sophisticated, high-brow Oscar voters?
The answer is yes. Just ask Heath Ledger and Joaquin Phoenix.

On March 6, History of the World, Part II will finally arrive more than 40 years after Mel Brooks’ classic comedy History of the World, Part I. first premiered. Of course, Brooks never had any intention of adding future parts to his ahistorical film, but that yet makes the arrival of Part II so many years later even funnier. Described as a four-night comedy event, History of the World, Part II will release two episodes a day through March 9. Brooks returns to write and executive produce this series and will star alongside Nick Kroll, Wanda Sykes, and Ike Barinholtz. Guest stars include…everyone. Basically just everyone.

Angela Bassett, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Abbott Elementary were among the top winners of the 2023 NAACP Image Awards.
Bassett took the top prize of Entertainer of the Year at the Queen Latifah-hosted ceremony, with Latifah herself presenting her with the honor. And when Bassett took the stage to accept the last award of the Saturday night live ceremony, her first remarks referenced Ariana DeBose’s viral BAFTA rap.

After acknowledging her “sisters” in the all-female Entertainer of the Year category, Bassett reflected on her past projects like What’s Love Got to Do with It and How Stella Got Her Groove Back and working with directors like Spike Lee and the late John Singleton. She mentioned her Black Panther: Wakanda Forever writer-director, Ryan Coogler, last, saying he “showed us that we are royalty and he built the crown for us all to wear.

It’s ironic but unavoidable that the greatest annual celebration of film should be a television special — but that’s just how it is. March often means Oscar season, a time for cinephiles to boot up that small screen you use for movies and use it to see if they win any awards during a telecast.
If you don’t have TV service anymore, Hulu has you covered with a pre-Oscars telecast as well as two red carpet specials before and after the main event. Though the ceremony itself won’t be livestreamed on Hulu, it will be added the next morning, like regular ABC programming. Awards viewership has been in general decline over the past several years, but next-day streaming gives curious viewers a chance to join the conversation and boost those Oscar ratings after the live show. It’s also a chance for superfans to pause and rewind...

It’s also a chance for superfans to pause and rewind...

Viola Davis has opened up about being mistakenly confused for a director’s housekeeper while on set.
During the Kering Women In Motion conversation at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival, presented by Variety, award winner Davis revealed that a male director called her by his maid’s name decades ago.
“I had a director who did that to me. He said, ‘Louise!’ I knew him for 10 years, and he called me Louise and I find out that it’s because his maid’s name is Louise,” Davis remembered. “I was maybe around 30 at the time, so it was a while ago. But what you have to realize is that those micro-aggressions happen all the time.”
Davis, who founded the production company JuVee Productions with her husband Julius Tennon, discussed the lack of roles for darker-skinned Black women in both the TV and film landscapes, citing the inherent colorism in Hollywood.

In 1997, Jeff Friday, founder and CEO of Jeff Friday Media, was working as the film division president of UniWorld Group, a prominent multicultural advertising agency headquartered in New York and founded by legendary ad world maven Byron E. Lewis. In January of that year, in search of new clientele within the entertainment industry, Friday headed to the Sundance Film Festival. It was the first film festival he had ever attended. It was also the year writer-director Theodore Witcher’s award-winning “Love Jones” screened at the fest, ushering in an era of what Friday calls “the glory days of Black cinema.” That film, and the experience of seeing it at Sundance, altered the trajectory of Friday’s career.
“This was right around the time of such films as ‘How Stella Got Her Groove Back,’ ‘Love and Basketball,’ and Spike Lee,” Friday recalls. “‘Sex, Lies and Videotape’ had just happened and there...
