After Lucille Ball's spunky housewife Lucy signed off on the last episode of "I Love Lucy" but before Mary Tyler Moore did away with the nuclear family sitcom model with her own self-titled show, another actress was one of the faces of womanhood in comedy. Oscar-winning actress Donna Reed headlined "The Donna Reed Show" from 1958 to 1966, playing middle-class mother and housewife Donna Stone in the popular black-and-white series. Reed starred opposite Carl Betz, who played Donna's husband, pediatrician Dr. Alex Stone. In season 5, family friends Midge and Dave joined the fun, but for the most part, the show was all about the lighthearted hijinks of the Stone family.
Though "The Donna Reed Show" was popular upon release, it's now perhaps most often referenced as a pop cultural window into a time before second-wave feminism, when women were expected to spend their time cooking, cleaning, and child-rearing while men went to work.

The third installment of the Sands: International Film Festival of St Andrews has set its slate, and that will include director Steven Soderbergh engaging in a conversation with directors Anthony and Joe Russo. I will moderate that discussion, which will touch on the preposterously unlikely way that Soderbergh discovered and godfathered the career of the duo that directed Hollywood’s all-time highest grossing film, Avengers: Endgame. The festival runs next month from April 19-21.
Soderbergh’s own career took off with sex, lies, and videotape, the film that just celebrated 35 years since the filmmaker turned Sundance into a lucrative independent film hatchery. It went on to win the Palme d’Or at the 1989 Cannes Film Festival, followed by Soderbergh’s first Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay. He has gone on to direct films as diverse as Traffic, for which he received the 2000 Academy Award for Directing—the...

A New Orleans native who was raised in Tennessee, Reese Witherspoon is the very definition of good things coming in petite 5-foot-1 packages. She made her film debut at age 14 in 1991’s “The Man in the Moon,” a bittersweet Southern coming-of-age tale of first love and loss. From then on, she was pegged as a young actress to watch. She would soon gravitate towards edgier fare such as the underwhelming 1994 comedy “S.F.W.” and 1996’s “Freeway,” a rancid take on a Little Red Riding Hood on the run. She then scored a signature role as the rabidly ruthless high-school over-achiever Tracy Flick in 1999’s political satire “Election.” That was followed by her first major box-office hit, 2001’s “Legally Blonde,” as a perky Harvard student with a penchant for pink, feathered pens and cute Chihuahuas.

With Westworld, Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy presented a vision of the future that was at once sleek and sexy, dark and dangerous. In Fallout, though, they've gone for something altogether more chaotic and comedic. Adapting the hugely popular game series, the new show promises a bonkers adventure through a post-apocalyptic locale that feels like Mad Max crossed with Pleasantville. See the new trailer:
With Graham Wagner and Geneva Robertson-Dworet as the show's primary creators and overseers (while Nolan produces and directs the first few episodes), Fallout takes the concept of the game, set in a twisted wasteland 200 years after a nuclear conflict all but wiped out a retro futuristic alternate version of our world, and spins a story of its own.
While vault-dwellers such as Ella Purnell's idealistic Lucy, the descendant of those who chose to survive the apocalypse in purpose-built underground shelters live a relatively straightforward existence of hardworking peace,...

Members of Hollywood’s production community — citing “negligence” and “reckless” behavior — were generally unsurprised by Wednesday’s guilty verdict in the first trial to be held in connection to the accidental shooting death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of “Rust.”
Hannah Gutierrez Reed, the armorer on the movie, was convicted of involuntary manslaughter in the incident, which occurred Oct. 21, 2021 during filming at Bonanza Creek Ranch in New Mexico.
Those contacted by Variety, including Dp Nancy Schreiber, a member of the American Society of Cinematographers, were angry and troubled by the failure to maintain a safe set. Citing the “negligence of loading live ammunition” near a film set, Schreiber wrote in an email to Variety, “Protocol was outrageously disregarded by the armorer as well as the first Ad in our industry, where safety standards must always come first.”

Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire are truly friendship goals. The two celebrities have consistently busted the myth that long-lasting friendships between A-list stars in Hollywood cannot stand the test of time. Despite being constantly in competition with each other for roles, DiCaprio and Maguire have forged an endearing bond that began when both stars were 12 years old.

Exclusive: Skydance Sports has closed a deal with Gary Ross to rewrite and direct Old Time Hockey, from an original screenplay written by Kevin Jakubowski. The film will be produced by Skydance Sports and Jeremy Latcham.
The original screenplay is set in the rust belt of Pennsylvania involving a high school hockey rivalry from the mid-’90s that gets re-kindled 25 years later.
Ross is no stranger to uplifting sports movies as he directed and wrote the hit horse racing pic Seabiscuit, which earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay. The four-time Oscar nominee has made a career out of writing and directing hit pics that include Pleasantville, The Hunger Games, and most recently Ocean’s 8 starring Sandra Bullock.
Jakubowski wrote the Black List feature screenplay 8-Bit Christmas which received both a PGA Award and Humanitas Prize nomination. His other credits include the screenplay for Assassination of a High School President,...

Have you ever watched a TV show and dreamt about the food being made on screen? We’re not talking about the professional chefs on Food Network or other cooking shows, that’s a conversation for another time, but rather the fictional characters that know their way around a kitchen and make you wish you could reach through the glass to taste what they’re making.
There’s no better time of year to fantasize about the TV characters that we would love to cook for us than Thanksgiving – the holiday dedicated to stuffing your face with delicious food all day long. Whether you opt for a traditional meal or avoid turkey entirely, most people will agree that the best part about Thanksgiving is the food, especially if you’re not the one cooking it.

One of the most acclaimed movies of 1998 is “Pleasantville,” starring Tobey Maguire, Reese Witherspoon, Jeff Daniels, William H. Macy and Joan Allen. Written and directed by four-time Oscar nominee Gary Ross, the film is a creative fantasy drama about two 1990s teen siblings who are transported to a 1950s family sitcom and then slowly begin to transform the dull, colorless world into someplace better. Released 25 years ago in October 1998, “Pleasantville” only grossed about $50 million worldwide on a $60 million budget. But it did end up receiving three Oscar nominations. Read on for Gold Derby’s tribute to the “Pleasantville” 25th anniversary.
Most of the nation’s critics gave enthusiastic notices to “Pleasantville,” including Roger Ebert in the Chicago Sun-Times, who picked it as the second-best film of 1998 and wrote that it “is the kind of parable that encourages us to re-evaluate the good old days and take a fresh look at...

It’s the year of color/black-and-white hybrid films, led by such Best Cinematography Oscar contenders shot on Kodak film as “Oppenheimer” (Universal), “Poor Things” (Searchlight), “Asteroid City” (Focus Features), and “Maestro” (Netflix). In addition, there are two other contenders of interest: “The Zone of Interest” (A24) contains a series of striking monochromatic moments, while the black-and-white “El Conde” (Netflix) offers a lone color sequence.
They are part of a great stylistic tradition of intermingling color and black-and-white to evoke heightened states of mind in such films as “The Wizard of Oz,” “A Matter of Life and Death,” “Bonjour Tristesse,” “Wings of Desire,” “JFK,” “Natural Born Killers,” and “Pleasantville.” It can be real or imaginary, but the aesthetic differences help drive the narratives.
By contrast, “A Haunting in Venice” (20th Century), shot by Kenneth Branaugh’s go-to cinematographer, Haris Zambarloukos, utilizes conventional black-and-white flashbacks to recap a mysterious murder. This...

"Ocean's 8" graced the big screen more than five years ago and it seemed to promise more to come. However, a sequel has yet to materialize for reasons unknown. Boasting an all-star ensemble including Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Sarah Paulson, Helena Bonham Carter, Rihanna, Awkwafina, and Mindy Kaling, the third installment of the popular "Ocean's" franchise proved its mettle at the box office, amassing a worldwide total of $297.8M, a figure roughly on par with "Ocean's Thirteen." Additionally, it garnered favorable reviews from critics. Mixed audience reactions resulted in only a 47% positive score on Rotten Tomatoes. Overall, the picture achieved success.
Yet, here we are, the passage of time notwithstanding, still awaiting further escapades featuring Debbie Ocean and her cohorts. The question remains: Why has Warner Bros. not granted the green light for another chapter in this star-studded saga?

The truth of the Killer Milkman has been revealed, Riverdale fans.
After months of mysterious deaths and control from the adults, their secrets came crumbling down on Riverdale Season 7 Episode 18. A tidal wave of revelations and victories left this town shaking in its boots.
But with this being the third remaining episode of the series, did the reveal make its big landing? Or did it bubble over like curdled milk?
"Chapter One Hundred Thirty-Five: For A Better Tomorrow" was a jam-packed chapter that made up for lost time.
With so little time left in Riverdale Season 7, the momentum kicked into overdrive to unravel some long-standing mysteries. And in one case, a secret we didn't even know was happening under the surface.
Before we get into the three main stories, we need to call out the exciting style change within the episode.
Shifting scenes from color to black and white was very evocative.

Jeff Daniels is ready to tell his story. The actor, who has been in everything from “The Purple Rose of Cairo” to “Dumb and Dumber,” is readying his audio-only memoir, “Alive and Well Enough,” as a 12-part series for Audible, with the first season debuting in September (with a second season on the way).
According to the official release “Alive and Well Enough” “mixes storytelling, original music and performance, [and] is like nothing you have heard before.” Would it be too much to ask for several chapters devoted to the making of “Arachnophobia?”
“Audible is the only place where I get to do everything I do,” said Daniels in an official statement. “’Alive and Well Enough’ is an audio adventure of an accidental artist who one day looked up and realized he had a sense of humor, a passion for writing and stories to tell.”

Speedy Ortiz have unveiled “Ghostwriter,” another look at their upcoming album Rabbit Rabbit. Listen to the single below.
As a nu-metal homage, “Ghostwriter” finds Sadie Dupuis seething with rage — a reasonable reaction to this summer’s boiling heat, and what that means for the future ahead. Rather than breaking stuff, however, the bandleader tries to find a more productive release.
“While ‘Ghostwriter’ ruminates on the horrible realities that stoke my anger — in this song’s case, the death of our climate and the criminalization of environmental protesters — it’s also about trying to live with less rage in the day-to-day,” Dupuis explained in a statement. “And not always succeeding, but not getting mad about that, either. And sometimes directing that angry adrenaline toward positive actions.”
Dupuis continued, “My bandmates picked ‘Ghostwriter’ as a single, perhaps because it subtly nods to our unabashed love of nu-metal. It was really fun to...

In the span of just six months, between October 1998 and April 1999, three movies were released that, put together, helped establish Reese Witherspoon as one of Hollywood’s hottest new stars. First came Pleasantville, then Cruel Intentions, followed by Election. The first, Pleasantville, garnered great reviews and, although it wasn’t a box office hit, has managed to attract a following over the years. The movie was written and directed by Gary Ross, who, at that point, had two Oscar nominations for writing under his belt. When we spoke to Witherspoon about Pleasantville, she told us that working with Ross made the film an amazing experience for her. Reese Witherspoon is recalling riding out the rollercoaster of being a young Hollywood star under the male gaze.
The Hello Sunshine production company founder told Harper’s Bazaar how the infamous 1996 erotic thriller “Fear” — released when she was 20 — partly inspired her to shift her career to become an “agent for change” for women in Hollywood.
Witherspoon unpacked the iconic rollercoaster scene in which her character is fingered by the sinister love interest, played by Mark Wahlberg. Witherspoon noted that she requested a stunt double for the below-the-waist scenes; the film was directed by James Foley.
“I didn’t have control over it,” Witherspoon said. “It wasn’t explicit in the script that that’s what was going to happen, so that was something that I think the director thought of on his own and then asked me on set if I would do it, and I said no. It wasn’t a particularly great experience.

Tobey Maguire is best known to audiences around the world as Peter Parker/Spider-Man in the first three adaptations of the comic-book hero’s adventures, but he has had a wide range of acting roles from intense dramas to comedies to even a Western. One of Maguire’s great advantages in getting started was the fact that, from his early days as a child actor, Maguire had a boyish look that allowed him to be cast as characters who were much younger than his own chronological age.
After his breakthrough role in 1997’s “The Ice Storm,” Maguire’s solid work soon came to the attention of Hollywood’s awards groups, and Maguire was honored at the Golden Globes with a Best Actor nomination for 2009’s “Brothers.” In addition, he also received two ensemble nominations from the Screen Actors Guild for his work in the films “The Cider House Rules” and 2003’s “Seabiscuit.

It’s never easy for Cary on “The Other Two,” is it? The older Dubek brother (Drew Tarver) finds himself doing the yeoman’s work of television — playing a lawyer — on a long-running series called “Emily Overruled,” in Episode 4 of Season 3. But although the cast and crew of “Emily Overruled” delight in hitting their marks and going home at 5 p.m., Cary is convinced that acting should be much more and tries to inject some life into the colorless soundstage environs— a journey that required intense collaboration across multiple departments on “The Other Two.”
The show’s production design, camera, editing, and VFX teams all worked together alongside series showrunners Chris Kelly and Sarah Schneider to create a rich visual metaphor for working on a long-running series: a black-and-white world in the style of “Pleasantville,” one that throws Cary off of his game until he can bring color and life...

The little-seen 2003 movie "The Cooler" tells the story of a man so unlucky that he can make a living in casinos by bumming out a player's winning streak just by standing next to them. Who else in the modern history of cinema could play that part better than William H. Macy?
He has had a career spanning over 40 years and in that time he has played cops, lawyers, principals, army men, doctors, former quiz champions, and devoted fathers and husbands. But few actors can do squirmy desperation better, and his screen persona is defined by playing the pathetic, browbeaten, hapless losers of the world. Those roles may only make up a small proportion of his extensive filmography but they're the ones that really stick, most notably scheming car salesman Jerry Lundegaard in "Fargo" and the publicly cuckolded Little Bill in "Boogie Nights."

Reese Witherspoon has been a force to be reckoned with in Hollywood for decades. Known for her peppy charm, her blonde good looks, and her ability to dish out a smart quip, Witherspoon has appeared in a wide variety of projects over the years. Still, to many of her fans, her work in the romantic comedy genre is her true claim to fame — and these days, the actor is back in the game, with a brand-new Netflix movie that has fans and critics buzzing.

Paul Walker enjoyed a lengthy career in Hollywood that carried him through various roles in several unique movies before his unfortunate death in 2013 at just 40 years old. Fans likely remember him best as Brian O'Conner in the "Fast and Furious" franchise, but the talented and handsome actor also appeared in critical hits such as "Pleasantville," "Joy Ride," and Clint Eastwood's "Flags of Our Fathers," and served as executive producer on the films "Vehicle 19," "Hours," and "Pawn Shop Chronicles." He even enjoyed a guest spot on National Geographic's "Expedition Great White" in 2009.
In his youth, Walker popped up in a variety of high-profile TV shows, among them "Highway to Heaven," "Charles in Charge," "Who's the Boss," and "Touched by an Angel," before making the leap to schlocky B-movie horror films such as "Tammy and the Rex," opposite Denise Richards, in which his character's brain somehow lands inside a Tyrannosaurus Rex.

People have been dreaming of living on the moon for as long as we've been able to see it in the night sky, but what if that was actually a possibility? In the new Apple TV+ series, "Hello Tomorrow!", a traveling salesman named Jack, played by Billy Crudup, offers families in a retro-futuristic world their own little piece of lunar real estate, but all is not as it seems. Jack and his fellow salesmen seem intent on selling suburbanites a vision of the future, with upbeat sales tactics, flashy graphics, and cute little pamphlets.
Retrofuturism is a fun subgenre within science fiction, creating a version of the future as it was imagined by people in the past. Generally, when people refer to the term, though, they're talking about science fiction with a distinctly 1950s Americana feel. There are shades of retrofuturism in the dreamy pastel world of Olivia Wilde's "Don't Worry Darling,...

There are diverse streaming releases slates and then there is Hulu’s list of new releases for May 2022. There are no big franchises here, no big themes – just a whole bunch of original and library titles for everyone to enjoy.

On May 15, Hulu will play host to Conversations with Friends. This is the latest adaptation of the works of Sally Rooney. After the breakaway success of Normal People, Hulu is undoubtedly hoping for more lightning in a bottle.
On the movie side of things, May will welcome The Valet on May...

Artisans are hoping for an Academy Awards do-over before the ceremony begins.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences sparked outrage and frustration last week when it revealed plans to award eight craft Oscars before the live telecast and sprinkle footage of those presentations throughout the three-hour show — all to make room for other entertainment elements designed to boost viewer engagement and sagging ratings. Adding to the upset: Unsuspecting nominees felt ambushed by the Zoom announcement about the impending change during a virtual town hall last week.
Susan Cabral-Ebert, a member of the Make-up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild, is among those hoping the Academy rethinks its plans before the March 27 ceremony. The former president of Local 706, whose credits include “Outbreak” and “Pleasantville,” tells Variety that the decision “felt like a kick in the teeth.” Her category is one of the eight affected; the others are original score, documentary short,...

Fair warning: the phrase “Capra-esque” might get a real workout in the ensuing review.
Late great comedy director Ivan Reitman’s inventive political comedy Dave (1993), starring Kevin Kline in a dual role as both a sleazy president and his kindhearted regular-guy doppelgänger, stands as a shining beacon of sunny cinematic optimism from a happier time in this country’s history.
Frank Capra, that beloved helmer of movies focused on underdog triumphs during Hollywood’s Golden Age, emerges as a clear influence guiding Reitman through Dave, with a winning script from eventual Pleasantville director Gary Ross. The picture also leans heavily on Mark Twain’s The Prince and The Pauper, in that a regular guy who happens to look a lot like a current political leader is enlisted to switch places with said leader. This time, it’s temp agency owner Dave Kovic (Kline), hired to cover for corrupt and cruel U.

In the spring of 2002, Tobey Maguire became one of Hollywood's biggest stars after taking on the lead role in Sam Raimi's "Spider-Man." A rousing box office and critical triumph, "Spider-Man" ushered in a new wave of superhero films, setting the stage for the Marvel Cinematic Universe's reign. This success meant there would inevitably be a sequel, and plans for "Spider-Man 2" were quickly underway.
In-between the "Spider-Man" films, Maguire had signed on to the biographical drama "Seabiscuit" from "Pleasantville" director Gary Ross about an undersized Depression-era racehorse who became one of the most successful thoroughbreds of all-time and inspired a struggling nation. The film was met...

“A great man doesn’t seek to lead; he’s called to it.”
This is the line spoken by Duke Leto Atreides (Oscar Isaac) to his son Paul (Timothée Chalamet) in “Dune,” Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation of Frank Herbert’s iconic science-fiction novel. But it also underscores the remarkable journey that Mary Parent, vice chairman of Worldwide Production for Legendary and one of the film’s producers, took to become one of the most successful and respected executives in Hollywood.
As its Oct. 22 release in the U.S. increases the gross of her projects to $4.7 billion, “Dune” marks her 16th credit as a theatrical film producer, culminating an eight-year journey for Parent, whom Variety is saluting as a billion-dollar producer, to bring the adaptation to the big screen, and more than 25 years of a career marked by adventuresome creativity, business savvy and a tenacious dedication to marrying the two.

When actress Marley Shelton was added to the cast of 2011's "Scream 4" as Deputy Judy Hicks, and subsequently survived the ordeal, it was just assumed that her character was being set up for a role in sequels down the line. Sure enough, she popped up in yesterday's trailer for the fifth installment "Scream," and she is now Sheriff Judy Hicks. Judy watches over the town of Woodsboro, where she lives with a teenage son named Wes, played by Dylan Minnette.
Her son's name is most assuredly a tribute to "Scream" franchise filmmaker Wes Craven, who sadly passed away in 2015 from...

In 2006, Haskell Wexler made a documentary about brutally long hours on film sets entitled “Who Needs Sleep?” The issue had become a flashpoint years earlier, when Brent Hershman died in a car crash after working a 19-hour day on the set of “Pleasantville.”
Wexler wanted to know why nothing had been done. In the film, he adopted a “Roger & Me” pose — only his villain wasn’t some big corporation. Instead, he hammered his own union, the International Assn. of Theatrical Stage Employees. He ambushed the international president at an awards banquet and accused him of neglecting the issue and of stifling advocacy about it.
“To this date,” Wexler said in the film, “leadership has been unresponsive.”
How things have changed. Long hours are now the central issue in talks between IATSE and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers. The union is seeking meal breaks and longer “turnaround” times between production days,...

The movie “Yesterday” imagines what the world would be like if no one had ever heard of The Beatles. You can guess the impact that would have on the world of rock music, but we’d also be without a handful of great movies that found just the right note because they managed to score a movie moment in the way no other song would do. This list however excludes The Beatles movies like “Yellow Submarine,” “A Hard Day’s Night,” “Help!” and even the “Across the Universe” jukebox musical that are loaded with perfect such moments.
