Not to be confused with Nicholas Barker’s 1997 film with which it shares its title, Alexis Dos Santos’ Unmade Beds is a modern story of romance and self discovery.
Axl has a bad habit of drinking too much and waking up in strange beds which he, more often than not, shares with even stranger individuals. He’s landed in London and is searching out his English father, a man he’s never met. Vera is a girl in search of companionship, something with no strings attached. The two have ended up sharing a London warehouse with a group of other individuals but their paths have never crossed but they will, you’re sure of it.

Just recently New York Times critic Manohla Dargis made some waves with an interview she gave using some salty language and calling out a few people here and there. Today she delivers a list of her favorite films of 2009.
While beating the dead horse that is the hatred for such films as G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen she also has a few kind words for some films that didn't make her ultimate list such as Star Trek, Julie and#038; Julia (agree keep the Julie), Duplicity, A Perfect Getaway, Up and A Single Man.
I have listed her top 13 directly below as she listed them, "in order of their domestic release" with links to my reviews where available. Following that is a list of her "other favorites." Like I said when I linked to her interview, "I have mixed feelings when it comes to...

With new entries becalmed in the chart before Avatar is unleashed, Robert Zemeckis's animated spectacle surges back to the top in its sixth week of release to become the gift that keeps on giving to Disney
The marathon runner
For the past four weeks, the top spot has been occupied by 2012, The Twilight Saga: New Moon and Paranormal Activity. But now, five weeks after it first entered the chart at No 1, Disney's A Christmas Carol returns to the summit. It's rare for a film in its sixth week of release to be finding much favour with audiences; to dominate the market at this point is an exceptional result. Box-office takings for Robert Zemeckis's animated Dickens adaptation went up on its second weekend by 31%, and has subsequently enjoyed small week-to-week declines of 11%, 13%, 14% and 7%. The film has now grossed over £16m, compared with £12m for Zemeckis's Polar Express (a figure...

The Box (12A)
(Richard Kelly, 2009, Us) Cameron Diaz, James Marsden, Frank Langella. 116 mins
Will Kelly ever make another movie as good as Donnie Darko? There are signs here that he might, but he hasn't this time. The Twilight Zone plot – press the button on this box and you'll get $1m, but someone will die – opens up more moral/conspiracy/sci-fi elements than the film can handle. Still, too much is better than not enough, especially when it's as smoothly sinister, visually sophisticated and borderline bonkers as this.
Me And Orson Welles (12A)
(Richard Linklater, 2008, Us/UK) Zac Efron, Claire Danes. 114 mins
Efron graduates from High School backstage to Welles's 1930s theatre troupe in this sweet coming-of-age flick, holding his own against Christian McKay's rakish, bombastic Welles – even when they fall for the same girl.
Cracks (15)
(Jordan Scott, 2009, UK) Eva Green, Juno Temple. 104 mins

Paranormal Activity (15)
(Oren Peli, 2007, Us) Katie Featherston, Micah Sloat, Mark Fredrichs. 86 mins
This movie's paranormal box-office activity in the Us has raised expectations sky high, but it sets out to do one thing – scare the pants off you – and does that horribly well. Tapping into our primal fear of things going bump in the night, especially while we're asleep, it gives you the shivers with little more than a grainy fixed-camera shot of a bedroom, as a regular guy tries to get to the bottom of his girlfriend's alleged haunting by trying to video their nocturnal disturbances. There's a certain amount of audience investment required. If you go in determined not to be scared, you probably won't be, but if that's the case, why buy a ticket in the first place?
Law Abiding Citizen (18)
(F Gary Gray, 2009, Us) Gerard Butler, Jamie Foxx, Colm Meaney. 109 mins

I'm stepping on Christopher Stipp's toes a little bit here; he's been doing a great job with his column This Week in Trailers on Fridays, but here it's only Tuesday and we've already got a trio of indie clips to show off. So rather than wait for the roundup I'll present this varied package of trailers now, and free up space for Christopher to talk about other stuff at the end of the week. So, after the break, we've got a trailer for the Sundance film Unmade Beds, a thriller called Across the Hall which marks the feature return of Brittany Murphy (and is an expansion of an existing short film) and a fundraising clip for a Goonies-like project called Slayers. First up, there's finally a trailer for Unmade Beds, a film that Peter saw at Sundance. There he liked the film's ideas, style and music, but wasn't taken with...

We've been watching this film forever and we finally have a full trailer to show you. I have also been sitting on a screener so we'll be bringing you a review soon.
Unmade Beds interweaves the stories of two young foreigners as they seek to rediscover their roots and romance in the vibrant world of London's East End. Twnety-year-old Spaniard, Axl arrives in London on a quest to find the father who abandoned him when he was a child. Taking up residence in a vibrant squat in a hip London neighborhood, he finds himself alongside other colorful characters from all over the world, drawn to London's melting pot.
Among them is Vera, a beautiful Belgian girl recently abandoned by her boyfriend whose faith in romance is gradually rekindled when she meets a charismatic stranger. Agreeing not to swap names or numbers, they embark on a passionate and mysterious affair, but when one fails to show,...

The San Francisco International Film Festival came to its curtain call Thursday night with the closing night film Unmade Beds, followed by a party at the Mezzanine club in Soma. Instead of going, I reflected on the fact that I saw over thirty films at the festival this year. Not all of them good—some were terrible, some weren’t even worth writing about.
I’ll be having a rundown of the festival’s best and worst films Monday night Live on the air, as I’ll be joining the good folks at Worst Show on the Web for their second show focused on Sfiff. Be sure to tune in starting 8 Pm, or you can download the show later at any time.

Starting tonight and over the next two weeks, the Film Society of Lincoln Center and the Museum of Modern Art (Moma) will once again be teaming up to present their annual film series, New Directors/New Films '09 , a showcase of new filmmakers and independent films by those whose films debuted at past Nd/Nf series. While there are a lot of films shown that have premiered at Sundance or other festivals, there's always an eclectic mix of American and foreign films and documentaries that many might not have a chance to see otherwise, as well as films that will go onto be recognized with awards later in the year. (For instance, last year, the series showed Courtney Hunt's Frozen River , which went onto be nominated for Oscars and win many other awards.) You can read our take on a...

MoMA and the Film Society of Lincoln Center have released the schedule for New Directors/New Films, and as in the past, it's heavy on films that recently played Sundance, including award winners (Push, We Live in Public, The Cove and The Maid). I'm looking forward to catching Amreeka (the Nd/Nf opening night film), Stay the Same Never Change and Unmade Beds</ ...

Sundance 2009 began two weeks ago, and while I still have a few mini-reviews to post, I'll join the chorus of commentary to present a final scorecard. My overall impression of the festival is that there were few films at the extremes — I saw no masterpieces and no awful films — but the mid-section was rich with movies that tried something new even if they found only partial success. I think it's unlikely that many of these films will end up as favorites at the end of the year — although a few might — but I still feel pretty good about what's coming down the pike.
indieWIRE and Movie City News have posted poll results that differ from my take, in part because everyone sees different movies, in part because a few of my favorites weren't seen by very many polled critics. It's hard to believe that people who liked You Wont Miss Me,...

On Wednesday, December 3, Sundance Institute has come out with an announcement for the movies line-up of the 25th Sundance Film Festival's U.S. and World Cinema Dramatic and Documentary Competitions. Among the wide-ranging list of more than 60 movies selected for the competitions are Lee Daniels-directed Harlem drama "Push (2009/II)", Pierce Brosnan-starrer family drama "The Greatest", Lone Scherfig's "An Education" and Max Mayer's romantic drama "Adam".
Commenting on this year's selections, Sundance Film Festival's director Geoffrey Gilmore said, "This year's films are not narrowly defined. Instead we have a blurring of genres, a crossing of boundaries: geographic, generational, socio-economic and the like." He then added "The result is both an exhilarating and emotive Festival in which traditional mythologies are suspended, discoveries are made, and creative storytelling is embraced."
