Sex satiates while storyline frustrates
Nodriesrespect21 January 2006
Warning: Spoilers
The omnipresent Shaun Costello has once more secured himself the leading male role of struggling writer Bob O'Connor trying to sell his latest erotic story to Biva skin magazine, presided over by the formidable Ms. Williams, a very funny performance by elusive starlet Lisa Marks (the leading lady of Roger Colmont's excellent WHITE FIRE which might yet grow into a cult movie if more people actually knew about it). Her speech alone to wannabe model David Morris (Dorothy LeMay's protector in SMALL TOWN GIRLS) about what it takes to be a Biva Boy should become an instant classic, hilarious in both content and delivery. By now, knowledgeable fans may have spotted Costello's bit of self-reference. In his "Amanda Barton"-credited PASSIONS OF CAROL, a wonderful take on Dickens' Christmas CAROL and by far his finest film of the '70s, the main character also ran a nudie magazine called Biva. As an extra nod, this film also takes place around Christmastime and Ms. Williams is even heard muttering "Bah, humbug !" at one point.

Bob's tale is the true life account of how he discovered that his adoring wife Jennifer (played by Lisa Heyman, a real life Russian interpreter for the UN, and also in Costello's MORE THAN SISTERS as the director has helpfully informed me) led a double life in every sense, including a second husband (Gerry Austin, also in Armand Weston's Jennifer Welles vehicle BLONDE VELVET) on the other side of town. He found this out by spying on the other couple's tantalizing tryst with gorgeous Roseanne Farrow (who played Costello's abducted spouse in his far superior SLAVE OF PLEASURE) who kicks off the scene in most becoming male drag. Ms. Williams seems intrigued but needs rather more than Bob's word for it so she sets out with her male secretary Roger (stalwart Ashley Moore), armed with a mock questionnaire regarding sexual mores, to see for herself whether Jennifer's as hot as her better half claims. No prizes for guessing as the magazine people engage in a hot foursome with Jennifer and her girlfriend Wendy, the latter played by cult goddess Georgette Sanders (DIRTY SUSAN herself). Still not satisfied, Ms. Williams decides to invite Jennifer and – unbeknownst to her – both her husbands for her annual New Year's Eve party cum orgy.

Patty Barnett, who had bit parts in SLAVE OF PLEASURE and THE HONEYMOONERS, plays the woman who accosts Bob at the party. Jennifer's two men finally meet and no one seems to mind the idea of a three-way marriage. Problem solved, Bob changes his mind about going public with the story, much to his scheming editor's consternation. This is clearly among Costello's better work from his pre-"Warren Evans" shoestring days.

The narrative is both well-structured and cute, as logical as its premise allows. Budgetary restraint shows in a limited use of bedroom and boardroom locations, though production is otherwise fairly clean for what was obviously a B-side to the more ambitious SLAVE, retaining several of that film's cast members. Porn's prime ingredient is certainly present and accounted for with all the ladies leaving lasting impressions, especially the very enthusiastic Heyman and fleeting favorite Farrow who are forever confused in just about every source you turn to.
