Exclusive: BAFTA-nominated Friday Night Dinner director Steve Bendelack is helming a comedy movie about an ageing rock band who reunites.
Bill & Ben Productions and Night Tide Films are combining on Heavenly Waters, which will shoot in Greece later this year.
Heavenly Waters tells the story of a rock band who, after an acrimonious split in the 1970s, agree to come together in Greece to scatter the ashes of their biggest fan, but things don’t go according to plan.
The pic is the writing debut of producer Kim Leggatt and actor David Schaal.
Bendelack is a two-time BAFTA nominee who was nominated in 2012 for Channel 4’s Friday Night Dinner. He has also helmed a wealth of iconic British comedies including Spitting Image, Little Britain, The Royle Family and Mr Bean’s Holiday.

Almost nothing happens in “The Royle Family.” Over the course of 25 episodes, we occasionally pop into two other rooms of the central family’s house in Manchester, England — the dinner table, and a tiny kitchen loaded with dirty dishes. But most of the action takes place in the TV room, as everybody sits around, enabling each other’s weaknesses and shortcomings.
The Royles, led by parents Jim and Barbara (Ricky Tomlinson and Sue Johnston) are a deeply dysfunctional family. The characters on this show would not understand the idea that they’re supposed to help each other grow — they wouldn’t recognize the use...

Four years ago, it was announced that Ben Wheatley would be writing, directing, and executive producing Generation Z, a “hilarious, frightening, and political” series that would consist of six hour-long episodes that would “mix flesh-eating zombies into a story that satirizes how Brexit has divided the UK.” That project didn’t make it into production when it was originally supposed to because of the pandemic shutdown… but after making his latest film Meg 2: The Trench (you can read our review at This Link and check out our interview with the filmmaker Here), Wheatley has circled back around to Generation Z and is now knee-deep into filming it! To celebrate the fact that Generation Z is finally being made, Channel 4 has unveiled a batch of first look images, and you can check those out at the bottom of this article.

No Spaced. No The League of Gentlemen. No Smack the Pony or Goodness Gracious Me or The Royle Family or Brass Eye, or Red Dwarf or Father Ted or anything that belongs to the last century (side note: the late 90s were an incredible time for UK comedy). These are the 40 finest British comedy TV shows that have arrived since the year 2000, as nominated by our writers. Add in your favourites below, and it’s a party.
What’s cheering about this lot, apart from the fact that as comedies, they should all technically cheer us up, is how different they are. There’s the surreal chaos of Year of the Rabbit, and the sweet warmth of Lovesick, the Pythonesque bonkersness of Yonderland, the satirical might of The Thick of It and much more. Something for everyone, you might say.

Are you ready to go for the Full Monty once again?
It's been 25 years since the cult classic had this group of out-of-work steel workers taking it all off in Sheffield, England.
Will they do it again?
You'll have to watch the trailer below to find out.
The new eight-part series follows the same band of brothers as they navigate the post-industrial city of Sheffield and society's crumbling healthcare, education, and employment sectors.
The comedy-drama will uncover what happened to the gang after they put their kit back on, exploring their brighter, sillier, and some of their more desperate moments.
But the series will also highlight how the fiercely funny world of these working-class heroes – still residing in Sheffield – has changed in the intervening decades.
Fans of the movie won't be disappointed as many of the original cast members are returning, including Robert Carlyle as "Gaz," Mark Addy as "Dave,...

Centred on a chaotic family coming to terms with an autism diagnosis, the Israeli comedy-drama “Yellow Peppers” never aired on British television, but it’s had a pronounced influence on British TV schedules over the past decade. First, it begat Peter Bowker’s direct adaptation “The A Word,” which over three series relocated several of its predecessor’s storylines to a picturesque Lake District setting, achieving the holy-grail combo of excellent reviews and high ratings for the BBC before finding a transatlantic home on Sundance TV.
Now “The A Word” generates its own variation in “Ralph & Katie,” a six-part spin-off charting the further adventures of soccer-mad Ralph (Leon Harrop) and his baker beloved Katie (Sarah Gordy). Noteworthy as characters with Down’s syndrome played by actors with Down’s syndrome, these lovebirds first won hearts during a third-series subplot on “The A Word,” moving in together against the advice of their overprotective,...

An unlicensed “Making a Murderer” musical is set to have its world premiere at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland next month – without Netflix’s involvement.
“Making a Murderer: The Musical” is based on the story of Steven Avery, who is also the subject of Netflix docuseries “Making a Murderer.” The musical is written by BAFTA-winning writer Phil Mealey (“The Royle Family”), who admits he was inspired by the Netflix documentary.
“When I watched the documentary, like many others I was outraged at the way the system seemed stacked against Steven and his nephew Brendan,” said Mealey. “As a writer I saw so many astonishing twists and turns and intriguing characters that if this were written as an original story no-one would believe it was plausible.”
“Our intention is to highlight and parody the inconsistencies in the case where people with power have not used that power fairly or effectively.

One of the consequences of the BBC’s decision to start up their own streaming service (how dare they) is that a lot of their shows will soon be departing from their competitors.
Britbox, in partnership with ITV, launched in the UK last November, and now the content available elsewhere has started to catch up. Today we’re going to run through the wealth of titles that’ll exit Netflix UK at the end of March. There’s a lot to run down, too. And yes, this is redundant for American readers. You’re more than welcome to stay for tea, though (which is more than just a cultural stereotype).
First up – and probably of most interest – are the BBC comedies leaving on March 30th:
A Bit of Fry and Laurie (4 Seasons) Absolutely Fabulous (6 Seasons) Almost Royal (2 Seasons) Daniel Deronda (1 Season) Extras (2 Seasons) Fawlty Towers (2 Seasons) French and Saunders (6 Seasons...

“Better Call Saul” star Bob Odenkirk’s favorite TV series have mostly come from the other side of the pond, including “Monty Python,” “The Goodies,” “The Royle Family,” and the UK version of “The Office.”
“I think about it as my humor, I don’t think about it as ‘British humor,'” Odenkirk told Variety‘s “My Favorite Episode” podcast. “You can’t beat the level of intelligence and care [from British comedies]. We churn so much TV out in America, so for many years in England it was 12 episodes and you’re done I think the time they took making all those shows probably lent itself to a higher quality.”
But that’s changing, as U.S. programmers adapt a similar style of auteur-driven, short-order series. “The marketplace has gone to a place that’s encouraging quality now,” he said.
Among recent shows that Odenkirk has loved: Hulu’s “Pen15.”

The brilliant Caroline Aherne has left us, at the age of just 52.
Horrible, horrible news. 2016 has now taken from us the brilliant Caroline Aherne, at the age of just 52.
Her death was confirmed yesterday by her publicist. She had been battling cancer, having being first diagnosed with the disease a couple of years back.
Where do you start? Across her career, Aherne gave us the wonderful The Mrs Merton Show, wrote and performed for The Fast Show, and - of course - created, co-wrote and co-starred in the sublime The Royle Family. Her gifts for comedy had few equals.
But you knew all of that, we're guessing. And thus you more than likely knew too that she was an incredibly gifted comedy writer and performer, whose loss is going to be keenly felt.
Our thoughts are with her friends and family at what must be such an awful time.

Banging a drum about stuff we love is more or less our remit on Den Of Geek - hence what many readers have started referring to as the ‘inexplicably regular' appearance of Statham, squirrels and Harold Bishop from Neighbours on these pages.
To that end then, we asked our writers which comedy shows (past and present, UK or otherwise, on TV, radio, or online…) deserved more praise, and here are the ones they chose. You might already like them too, or you might discover something new to dig out and enjoy. That’s the fun of it.

After 15 years away, Men Behaving Badly returns to our screens tonight (October 17) for a one-off sketch during the Stand Up To Cancer telethon on Channel 4.
During the 1990s, the sitcom became one of the most popular shows in the UK, at the height of lad culture, with Martin Clunes and Neil Morrissey creating one of the best TV bromances in Gary and Tony. It also holds the distinction of airing on three different channels (ITV, BBC One and Channel 4).
To celebrate its (brief) return, here are just a small collection of the show's most hilarious moments to influence you to binge on the boxset this weekend.
1. Sailing ('Drunk', Series 4)
While Dorothy (Caroline Quentin) prepares a romantic meal for Gary, he and Tony indulge in an epic drinking session at The Crown. Before heading back absolutely sloshed, they partake in a drinking game singing Rod Stewart's 'Sailing'. This should happen every night.

The storm surrounding How I Met Your Mother's controversial finale may have mostly subsided, but Neil Patrick Harris (Barney) was still being grilled about the sitcom's unhappy ending when he appeared on The Late Show with David Letterman last night.
In defence of the divisive 'Last Forever', the actor said: "I value that it's a sitcom and a lot of people watched it to have laughs and to not have it become so dramatic and so emotional [but] I'm very proud of our show that it went beyond this sitcom conceit and told a bitter, better story."
Regardless of how you felt about its finale episode, one of Himym's strengths was its capacity to have you laughing one moment and crying the next - oh, Marshall's dad…

Frank Sidebottom was possibly the strangest pop star in history. Jon Ronson, who played in his band, and has co-written a film inspired by the character starring Michael Fassbender, remembers Frank's creator Chris Sievey as being even more eccentric than his papier-mache alter ego
In 1987 I was 20 and the student union entertainments officer for the Polytechnic of Central London. One day I was sitting in the office when the telephone rang. I picked it up.
"So Frank's playing tonight and our keyboard player can't make it and so we're going to have to cancel unless you know any keyboard players," said a frantic voice.
I cleared my throat. "I play keyboards," I said.
"Well you're in!" the man shouted.
"But I don't know any of your songs," I said.
"Wait a minute," the man said.
I heard muffled voices. He came back to the phone. "Can you play C, F and G?...

It's been 10 years since Kathy Burke stuck two fingers up at stardom. Here she talks about loving theatre, hating writing – and why Richard Dawkins gives her the hump
'Don't write about how much I'm chain-smoking," grumbles Kathy Burke. "Everyone opens with, 'After the fourth cigarette … ' and it's boring. So don't be doing that, Ryan, else I'll say you're just the same as everyone else." She releases a tight laugh and takes another puff. I mean: takes another sip of rosehip tea.
We're up on the roof of London's Tricycle theatre, sitting on two rickety chairs beneath a blank November sky. Downstairs, Burke has spent the morning directing a new production of Once a Catholic, Mary J O'Malley's comedy set in 1957 at Our Lady of Fatima convent school. Burke is a versatile actor, adored for her populist, prickly comedy: she was Linda, the voracious ginger foghorn with porthole specs in...
