- A child of poverty, Juanita contributes to a slim family purse by selling provisions in the streets. The famous toreadors, Gayetano and Manuel, are attracted by her unusual charms, and the latter follows the girl to learn where she lives. Juanita's mother, an avaricious woman, upbraids her for failing to increase her earnings. Ruy, a half-witted farmer boy, is enslaved in a hopeless passion for the Spanish beauty, who ignores his every plea. Manuel comes in the evening to serenade Juanita. Gayetano, his friend, returning from a bull-fight, the next day again meets Juanita, who agrees to meet him the following evening. The next day, however, Manuel offers to make Juanita his wife but is spurned by her, although her mother is greatly impressed by the wealthy toreador's proposal. In the evening Gayetano calls to keep his appointment with Juanita. Mutually attracted, they take a solemn vow to be true to each other unto death. Gayetano, in his new love, soon forgets that he is betrothed to Manuel's sister, Conchita. Soon after they are married, Gayetano takes his bride to his home. Manuel and Ruy, unsuccessful in their courtships, plot to separate the happy couple. Their chance comes when Gayetano takes leave of Juanita and leaves to take part in a bull fight. Manuel makes a final effort to win Juanita's love, and, failing, decides to take desperate measures. Juanita is told by Ruy that her mother is dying. Hastening to her parent, she is made captive by Manuel, who takes her to a lonely farm in the mountains, and leaves her in charge of Ruy. Manuel then hastens to Gayetano and convinces him that Juanita is false and untrue. Gayetano vows that he will have nothing more to do with her. Juanita, exerting her influence over the half-witted Ruy, succeeds in making her escape, learning that Manuel has decided to enter the bull fight, she goes to the arena where thousands of spectators have already gathered to witness the contests. She makes her way to a point where she can see to the best advantage. Soon the toreadors enter the arena amid the tumultuous applause of the crowd. Manuel becomes engaged with a savage bull, which, infuriated, endeavors to rid himself of his tormentors. Watching for a critical moment, Juanita sees her opportunity as the furious animal rushes at Manuel. Raising her voice above the din of countless voices, she cries aloud, "Manuel. Manuel!" Hearing his name the toreador turns to locate the sound. Too late he realizes his error as he is borne to earth and terribly gored by the bull. Rescued at length by the attendants, Manuel is carried aside. Bending over the dying man. Gayetano promises him that he will marry Conchita as soon as he is free to do so. He secures a divorce from Juanita and prepares to keep his promise. At the wedding Juanita calls uninvited and, fascinating Gayetano by her wiles, she draws him to the spot where they had vowed eternal love. There in the shadow of a sacred monument they fall, victims of their own hands. The oath is fulfilled.—Moving Picture World synopsis
