Tolerable Low Budget SF for children with an amusing villian in Tim Curry.
Highness4 March 1999
Although this film has its boring moments, (okay, its got more than enough boring moments), Curry fans will enjoy his romp as the evil, mind sucking, Dr. Kao, who delights in tormenting his assistant with constant threats of mind-wipes when he screws up. Rocky Horror fans might giggle when Curry utters some familiar phases in this flic, such as "Bring them up to the lab..." and "Anticipation..." I especially enjoyed one scene when Curry stops and concentrates very hard, then tells his assistant "Oh, sorry, I thought perhaps some feelings of compassion were occurring to me...but I was wrong."

The children, who are running away to a "New Eden," are the main stars of this story, and luckily they are quite tolerable. The violence is low-key, lots of chasing and bellowing from armor-clad guards, some explosions for color, but no blood.

Ok, but...

Ok movie, but the average adult would say it stinks! Too busy with things that don't matter or too busy with sentimental situations that are never made clear. Good intentions, but you will have to use your own imagination to make this movie come clear. Now this is not bad (using your imagination), but what I am commenting on is the movie itself and not its motivational possibilities (of which I believe are in HIGH regard)!

I will say that it is not bad and might be worth watching!

A long from great, or even good, but tolerable enough
TheLittleSongbird8 January 2017
The main reasons for seeing 'Doom Runners' were my undying love for Tim Curry and whether it would do anything fresh or exciting with an idea that's very old and overused.

'Doom Runners' does just about have enough to keep it watchable and there's certainly far worse ways to spend your time, but to me to say that 'Doom Runners' is particularly good is not being honest. Children are much more likely to find more value in 'Doom Runners' than adults, whereas while enjoying Tim Curry's performance adults may find it painful to sit through.

Credit is due in that it is not something where no effort is made, there are flashes throughout where one can see that they were trying. If anything, the film tried too hard and ended up not executing what could have been decent if undemanding stuff properly. Just for the record, regarding the above paragraph and the last sentence, as an adult it wasn't painful to sit through for me but it was very difficult to ignore the faults.

Best thing about 'Doom Runners' is Curry. And no, this is not hero worship, and this is not saying that he has never done a bad film and has never been bad. The former couldn't be further from the truth and there are a few not so good performances of his but most of the time he is good to fantastic and has been the best thing in less than good stuff numerous times. Cutting to the chase, Curry is clearly having the time of his life here, chewing the scenery to fun effect while also succeeding in being a sinister threat.

He isn't the only thing that's good though. The two lead child performances from Bradley Pierce and Lena Moreno are appealing and do well in conveying the children's conflicts. Generally the acting is not too bad at all. The scenery is beautiful and lighting atmospheric, while the music score is fun enough. A few interesting ideas here and there too.

On the other hand, 'Doom Runners' does strive to make an old idea fresh and exciting, and while there is some exciting action everything is just too blatantly predictable and suffering from a complete lack of originality from the get go to succeed at freshness, that one can write down what will happen what would happen a minute or two later about a minute or two ahead. The characters are as stereotypical as they come, and the script is often cheesy and cheesy, while Curry enjoys his lines a few seem to be making nods to 'Rocky Horror' and comes over clumsily.

Everything feels too busy and over-stuffed, and there are parts that are very vague or irrelevant, complete with the odd dose of jarring sentimentality and far too many suspension of disbelief moments that veer on the wrong side of absurd that it's laughable. Scenery aside, 'Doom Runners' looks on the cheap side with run-of-the-mill photography and slapdash effects.

The narration just came over as unnecessary, overused and over-explanatory, three of the biggest traps that narration can fall into and ones that are frequently fallen into (though there are exceptions, in recent years 'Gone Girl' used narration/voice over brilliantly), and delivered in a lifelessly deadpan fashion.

In summary, tolerable and watchable but a long way from being good, let alone great. 4/10 Bethany Cox

Well played all round, enjoyable evening entertainment.

Warning: Spoilers
I give Doomrunners a healthy 7/10. The score was well chosen, beautifully fitting the mood of the film. Lea Moreno-Young more or less steals the stage. Whether she was intended to lead the piece or not, she does, delivering a subtle and interesting performance as Jada.

I couldn't see an actor out of place in this film. It was concise (if anything too short!) and held my attention quite effortlessly. Bradley Pierce was sweet and intriguing as Adam, and I think well deserving of the 1998 nomination for Best Performance for Leading Young Actor. Even the silent Nathan Jones (Vike) was well played.

Of course, one must not forget the bad-guy. Tim Curry shines as Dr Kao, the evil mind-wipe madman set on destroying the youngsters hopes and chances of lasting happiness. Funny, darkly twisted and beautifully played ; as usual.

I will admit that the point at which we see the storm brewing (in what is obviously time-lapse photography) my enjoyment faltered somewhat – as it would for anyone familiar with time-lapse in the days of CGI. If I were to pick holes, I would say that the poison gas was too obvious a device – and they could have done with a nice fight scene to round it off.

However, even these small moments were not enough to prevent me watching again (and I believe we are now up to five times) for the pure enjoyment of an interesting idea presented well.

Who Doesn't love Tim Curry/
skooshie9 January 2009
I wont say this is the worst film I've ever seen and I understand it is just a movie and you have to stretch your imagination but for a post apocalyptic world it was pretty clean. The young actors gave it a good run but you have to give credit to the fact that Tim Curry makes this movie worth watching. He is so wonderfully over the top in most things but he was a little more subtly over the top in this one. No offense to Dean O'Gorman but what the heck was the narration all about. I guess in stead of showing emotion he was being stoic and explaining it? If I was an eight year old I probably would have thought it was a good movie. It has all the right elements for a great kids movie but it just didn't quite make it
