- Paulie, an Italian man returns to his hometown of Adelaide, Australia after spending three years in a monastery. Upon returning home, he finds his buddies have not grown beyond where they were when he left. Together, they decide to open a café. Enter a rich young man, who is obsessed with Sylvester Stallone movies thus his nickname of Rocky, acts like a gangster with thugs in tow and a constantly belittled girlfriend. Obviously, the girl and Paulie hit it off and they must find a way out of Rocky's clutches. The film's title comes from the name of the café the trio decide on.—John Sacksteder <jsackste@bellsouth.net>
- Spank! largely revolves around the "cafe culture" which dominates much of the Adelaide social scene, specifically Rundle street. Paulie is an ex-priest who has recently left his order and seeks some direction in his life. To his horror many of his childhood friends still remain exceedingly delinquent, specifically 'Rocky', a boxing obsessed thirty something living off of his father's success. Jo is Rocky's beautiful girlfriend who is infatuated by the ex-priest Paulie - and the feeling is of course mutual. The rest of the film centres on Paulie's friends, Tina and Nick's trials to make their mark on the competitive Rundle street cafe scene with their own effort. The film balances comedy (specifically multicultural stereotypes) and traditional romance side plots.
