This short involves a fanciful tale told by Woody Herman about his grandpa and a rather special clarinet. Since I can't discuss this without some details from the short, there are mild spoilers ahead:
The short opens with a live-action sequence showing Woody Herman playing a clarinet. He then addresses the audience, confiding in them that this clarinet is no ordinary clarinet, but was made by his grandpa, a woodsman. The short now moves to a Puppetoon woodsman singing and cutting down trees until he comes upon a tree inhabited by a spirit, which asks that, if grandpa must cut down the tree, that it be fashioned into something the spirit may continue to occupy. That's how grandpa comes to fashion the clarinet. The rest of the animated portion of the short is grandpa felling trees musically. Visually, the animation is quite nice, as is the general rule with George Pal shorts.
The end of the short returns to live-action of Herman and is rather funny. This short is included on a Blu-Ray release of The Puppetoon Movie which was recently done by a boutique production company. The Blu-Ray is exceptionally well done and is well worth seeking out. The short itself is worth watching. Recommended.
