Kate McKinnon returned to Studio 8H to host "Saturday Night Live" for the first time this weekend. Though it might feel like a long time since McKinnon left the late night sketch comedy series, she only just departed in 2022 at the end of season 47, along with Aidy Bryant, Kyle Mooney, and Pete Davidson. But how did McKinnon fare hosting "SNL" without Bryant, her frequent partner in comedy?
Honestly, a pairing of the two comedians was missed in the Christmas episode of "SNL," but executive producer Lorne Michaels tried to make up for the lack of Bryant's guest appearance with the return of two other alums: Maya Rudolph and Kristen Wiig. Not only did the two appear in the monologue to sing an "SNL" rendition of "I'll Be Home for Christmas," but they popped up in two of the better sketches of the evening. However, we shouldn't sleep on musical guest and former host Billie Eilish,...

Saturday Night Live‘s final episode of 2023 featured several alums of the sketch comedy show.
Not only did Kate McKinnon, who departed the show last year, return to host, but fellow alums Kristen Wiig and Maya Rudolph also made a special appearance during her monologue.
As McKinnon took to the Studio 8H stage, she started by saying it was weird to come back to her “old job” and do the monologue: “I don’t really like to talk in my own voice. That’s kind of why I got into this racket in the first place.”
The comedian proceeded to quip that she left SNL because “my skin was reacting poorly to the prosthetics” from all the characters she played over 10 years.
“I’ve never been myself in a monologue before,” she said, adding that she usually plays “the role of freak next to hot person” during past monologues with other hosts.

Former Saturday Night Live cast member Kate McKinnon was joined on stage Saturday by fellow SNL alums Maya Rudolph and Kristen Wiig, and the trio put an SNL spin on “I’ll Be Home for Christmas.”

Kate McKinnon made her debut as Saturday Night Live host and was joined by former cast members Maya Rudolph and Kristen Wiig.
The Barbie star dropped into her “old job” to host the NBC late-night show and expressed how “weird” it was doing the monologue without being in character.
“It’s so weird to be doing the monologue. I don’t really like to talk in my own voice. That’s kind of why I got into this in the first place,” McKinnon said.

“I’ve been trying to assemble a human personality,” she added. “And so far, I have a hat.”

“Saturday Night Live” alums Maya Rudolph and Kristen Wiig joined Kate McKinnon as the latter returned to “SNL” for the first time as host, 18 months since she bowed out of the cast after a 10-year tenure.
After the cold open, which spoofed Hollywood award shows, McKinnon hit the famous Studio 8H stage and did a short monologue. She acknowledged the awkwardness for her of coming back to her “old job” but in a different role.
“My name’s Kate, hi. I used to work here,” McKinnon said, sporting a blonde bob haircut and sleek black tuxedo suit. “This is so weird to be doing the monologue.” She noted she’s not accustomed to performing as herself. “I don’t really like to talk in my own voice — that’s kind of why I got into this racket in the first place.”

"The Amityville Horror" is one of the definitive haunted house films, a classic tale about paranormal activity terrorizing a suburban family with swarming flies, mysterious voices, and sudden illness. Even the windows resemble ominous eyes peering down on the unsuspecting victims. The movie taps into the religious undertones popularized by other 1970s releases such as "The Exorcist" and "The Omen," suggesting there is a Satanic force at work that must be destroyed.
Eventually, the new owners George and Kathy Lutz discover the horrifying history of their new home: Ronald DeFeo Jr. murdered his entire family with a rifle one year prior, a Satanic worshipper named John Ketchum once lived on the land, and the house itself was built on a Shinnecock burial ground.
Despite receiving mixed reviews for elements like the cheesy portrayal of a possessed George, "The Amityville Horror" ended up having a significant impact on the horror genre.

(Welcome to The Daily Stream, an ongoing series in which the /Film team shares what they've been watching, why it's worth checking out, and where you can stream it.)
The Movie: "I'll Be Home For Christmas"
Where You Can Stream It: Disney+
The Pitch: This year, when you think of live-action Disney movies involving Santa Claus, you're more likely to bring up Tim Allen's "The Santa Clause" thanks to the brand new Disney+ sequel series, "The Santa Clauses" (which will apparently be returning for a second season). However, the comedian isn't the only "Home Improvement" cast member to branch out into holiday movies. During the popular sitcom's final season in 1998, Jonathan Taylor Thomas starred in "I'll Be Home For Christmas."
Due to his father remarrying less than a year after his mother passed away, hot shot boarding school student Jake (Jonathan Taylor Thomas) has grown estranged from his family back in New York.

Al Roker hasn’t been in the NBC Today studio since early November due to ongoing health issues, so the morning show crew brought the festive cheer to his doorstep instead. Today staffers, led by co-hosts Hoda Kotb and Savannah Guthrie, surprised the beloved weather forecaster on Wednesday, December 14, as they gathered at his front door to sing “Jingle Bells” and “I’ll Be Home for Christmas” (remixed to “Al Be Home For Christmas”). “I’m impressed you did that without a prompter,” Roker joked after his co-workers’ first song. Then, the long-time weather presenter was brought to tears as he thanked his colleagues. “I just want to thank you all,” he said, “It’s been a long, hard slog, and I’ve missed you all so very much. All these faces — it just means the world to me and to our family.” The Today family brought holiday cheer to Al...

Robin French, a talent agent who worked with legends including Marlon Brando and Elizabeth Taylor and later headed production at Paramount Pictures in the late 1970s, has died. His family said he had been in declining health for the past few months and died September 6 in Palm Desert, CA.

Exclusive: Life In Pieces alumna Giselle Eisenberg will take over the character of 10-year-old Anna-Kat on ABC’s American Housewife as the comedy series returns for a fifth season. She replaces original cast member Julia Butters who is leaving the show to pursue other opportunities.
Butters hit stardom last year following her breakout performance in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time In Hollywood. Tarantino actually spotted Butters on American Housewife and went to cast her as the precocious child actor Trudi Fraser. Butters earned acclaim and landed a slew of nominations for her role in the movie, which opened a lot of doors for her. The young actress and her team wanted to pursue them and the studio behind American Housewife, ABC Signature, granted her request to leave the series.

Following the double-platinum success of her Once Upon a Christmas LP with Kenny Rogers in 1984, it was a natural that Dolly Parton would eventually release another holiday-themed album. After her short-lived variety series in the late Eighties, the East Tennessee native finally went Home for Christmas with an LP and an ABC TV special in 1990. Unlike the previous album, which included several new original tunes, Home for Christmas was built around traditional Yuletide fare, including such songs as “The Little Drummer Boy,” “We Three Kings” and “O Little Town of Bethlehem.

Brandy Clark, “Merry Christmas Darling”
Brandy Clark brings out the melancholic ache in this holiday staple. The thick harmonies during the song’s final stretch nod to the Carpenters, who first released “Merry Christmas Darling” in 1970, while the electric guitar — played with expert restraint by Charlie Worsham — cranks up the soul without clouding the sorrow.

Happy holidays! Lea Michele just released her first Christmas album, and it's basically a mini Glee reunion (aka the best Christmas gift ever). Christmas in the City ($12) is inspired by Michele's childhood memories of spending the holidays in New York, the former Glee star told People. "I am finally able to share this with you! #ChristmasInTheCity coming soon," the actress and singer captioned her Instagram post revealing the cover of the 11-track album, which shows her posing in a red gown à la Carrie Bradshaw. "Can't wait to get into the holiday spirit with you guys."
Michele, who just married her husband, Zandy Reich, in March, said she's at a very happy time in her life, so releasing the album just "made sense." "It was always my dream to make a Christmas record," Michele said. "Christmas is so special to me. It's such an important time of year for me...

Every so often, we take a second to reflect on our celebrity crushes of yore, from boy band members to cute TV actors, and wonder: what the hell happened to them? An adorable heartthrob named Jonathan Taylor Thomas (affectionately known as Jtt) had a heyday in the '90s, taking over the covers of teenybopper magazines and making us swoon each week as Randy Taylor on the ABC sitcom Home Improvement. Between 1991 and 1999, Jtt's cute little face and floppy middle-parted hair was also featured in big-screen classics like Man of the House, Tom and Huck, Wild America, and I'll Be Home For Christmas, and he also lent his voice to Disney's The Lion King as young Simba. After a smooth run of success, Jonathan Taylor Thomas seemingly disappeared. Poof! In 2013, Jonathan opened up about his decision to leave the spotlight, telling People that he had "been going nonstop since I was 8 years old,...

I'm pretty sure there's nothing Leslie Odom, Jr. can't do. This recording of I'll Be Home For Christmas perfectly shows off his good taste, style and that exemplary voice. The song is, of course, an American classic, with lyrics by Kim Gannon and a melody by Walter Kent. Gannon wrote it from the point of a World War II soldier stationed overseas, telling his family that he'll be home for the holidays, and to prepare the Christmas fun. Of course, the last lyric is one of the most melancholy ever written - I'll be home for Christmas, if only in my dreams. When the song was first pitched to folks in the music business, it was roundly refused, since it all seemed incredibly sad. But Bing Crosby smartly threw caution to the wind and recorded the tune, with immense success. Interestingly, after the lyricist's death, he left the royalty rights to the American Heart Association,...
