This month’s installment of Deep Cuts Rising features a variety of horror movies. Some selections reflect a specific day or event in March, and others were chosen at random.
Regardless of how they came to be here, or what they’re about, these past movies can generally be considered overlooked, forgotten or unknown.
From dinosaurs to a killer clown, here are five hidden horror gems and deep cuts that you can check out in March 2023.
The Fantasist (1986)
Directed by Robin Hardy.
Despite her family’s mixed reaction to her decision, Moira Harris‘ sheltered but curious character moves to Dublin to be a teacher. There she becomes the next target of a serial killer who gradually escalates from phone calls to murder. The protagonist of The Fantasist eventually suspects her pushy American neighbor (Timothy Bottoms) to be the culprit.
While best known for directing The Wicker Man, and to a lesser extent The Wicker Tree,...

Thanks to what seems to be a never-ending delay, the Gotham TV series has somehow managed to beat the comic book medium to the “Three Jokers” punch. Granted, I’m waiting with bated breath for what’s sure to be an epic miniseries written by Geoff Johns and illustrated by Jason Fabok to hit shelves, but the Batman prequel show has done a fine job of putting its own stamp on the Clown Prince of Crime’s legacy.
Of course, we all owe a huge debt of gratitude to the immensely talented Cameron Monaghan. But before we hear from the actor himself, let’s first take a look at what executive producer John Stephens had to say to Gamespot in regard to this topic. As he spoke, the showrunner touched on Jerome, Jeremiah and the third element to be introduced into the saga:

Well, the moment we’ve been waiting for finally arrived tonight when Jerome Valeska made his triumphant return to Gotham. And while he did steal every scene he appeared in, he didn’t eat up too much screentime. In fact, during the time he did stick around for, he was busy planting seeds for what’s to come, hoping to enlist Penguin as the first to join his “Legion of Horribles.”
That said, tonight’s offering obviously didn’t mark the origin of the Joker, something smart money says won’t occur until this season’s penultimate episode, “One Bad Day.” Regardless, it’ll be a few more weeks before we see more of Jerome, but there’s certainly much, much more to look forward to as the saga continues.

Now that Gotham has finally resumed its thrilling fourth season, we’re more than ready for Jerome Valeska to make his return next week. In fact, if you also happen to be a fan of Cameron Monaghan’s proto-Joker, you should be elated to know that we’ll likely be seeing much more of him before the current run wraps.
In case you hadn’t heard, a recent indicator had been that of some comments made by executive producers John Stephens and Danny Cannon, saying that Jerome will soon be forming his own “Legion of Horribles.” Basically, he plans on uniting the more recognizable burgeoning supervillains under his own insane vision before spreading Arkham Asylum’s madness out into Gotham City at large.
This time, it’s series lead Ben McKenzie who’s confirming that Jerome has indeed shot some scenes with two specific villains, offering the following up in...

After being somewhat disappointed to hear that Jerome Valeska will be entirely absent from the midseason premiere of Gotham – no matter how heavily he’s factored into its marketing – it was nice to learn that he’s been confirmed to appear in the episode to follow.
Originally, we expected for said episode to wrap up his arc for the current season, and while that is still very possible, new evidence has surfaced suggesting that he may have a recurring role in the second half of season 4. It all comes to us courtesy of a recent DC All Access outing in which they sit down with some of the creative minds behind the series.

Earlier this week, many fans of Gotham were taken aback upon learning that, according to both David Mazouz and Cameron Monaghan, Jerome Valeska is Not the man who’ll be revealed to be the Joker. Really, despite all the stars that have thus far been aligned and a Joker card being proudly displayed in the trailer for the midseason premiere, we’re told that it’s simply not meant to be.
For the lapsed and uninitiated, the reason that we were so disappointed to learn of this is two-fold: Not only has Monaghan delivered what have been arguably the most accurate comics-to-screen performances as the Joker (or somebody like him), but he recently adopted some looks that were homages to Death of the Family and Endgame, a couple of modern Batman classics crafted by Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo.

Even without his longtime collaborator in artist Greg Capullo, superstar scribe Scott Snyder continues to churn out incredible stories featuring the Dark Knight in the pages of All-Star Batman. With the first arc now behind us, the antagonistic focus for the next issue will be placed on one of my favorite villains, Mr. Freeze.
This is especially exciting because aside from an annual released a few years back, Snyder hasn’t had the opportunity to work on Freeze very much. Knowing what he has done with baddies such as Joker, Riddler, and Two-Face makes this all the more special.

Like many children growing up in the 1960s, Kenneth Hall loved monsters. Ever since he was a toddler, his mother — who was an especially big fan of Vincent Price — took him and his brother to see films like The Brides Of Dracula, Curse Of The Werewolf, and The Pit And The Pendulum. And that was all it took. At age 10, Hall discovered Famous Monsters of Filmland, and with the help of the trusty TV Guide, he and his brother made a point to watch as many of the films they read about as they could, even if it meant sneaking out of bed and staying up late to catch a showing of The Deadly Mantis. Like many Monster Kids of his time, there was a now-or-never mentality that came with a lack of home video, but growing up in Jacksonville, Fl did give Hall an extra advantage. It was the...

Sarah Lassez was the appealing lead actress in The Clown At Midnight co-starring Tatyana Ali, James Duval, Margot Kidder and Christopher Plummer. The film is about a young woman and her friends cleaning an abandoned old theater only to be picked off by a killer clown who reportedly murdered an actress over 15 years ago. The Clown At Midnight is finally getting released to DVD today. Here's what Sarah Lassez had to say about the film.
So who is Sarah Lassez and what are you all about?
I'm an indie actress as well as published author. My memoir "Psychic Junkie" was published by Simon & Schuster in the summer of 2006. I tend to go through phases in my acting career. Clown at Midnight was part of my wide-eyed innocent phase (rape, suicide and murder were common fates). The whorish phase came next. I'm currently in the more empowered albeit bat-shit-crazy phase (eg.
