Here you have another Scream Factory title, which will be judged a little harsher than usual. MGM recently released its own Blu-ray version of Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, and for the most part, it was just fine. In addition to the MGM Region A release, there was also an Arrow Video-released Region B Blu-ray, which most fans have considered the “definitive edition” until now. I have nothing but respect for Arrow Video. They are basically the Criterion of B-movies right now. But I think this new TCM Blu-ray may just trump their excellent release, at least ever-so-slightly in the Pq department. As for the movie itself, I’m a big fan, always have been. I know it’s a divisive title among fans because it abandoned the relentlessly terrifying tone of the first movie, and opted for a more humorous approach, but it’s utterly fascinating. That opening scene is...

This third week of April has some exciting home entertainment offerings for us genre fans, including the special edition releases of two cult classics I adore, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 and The Stuff. An indie film I’ve been hearing about for a while now, Grimewave, also makes its way to DVD this Tuesday and while it may not be traditional horror, Oscar-winner The Revenant certainly has enough badassery contained within its cinematic frames to be worthy of mentioning this week, and it arrives on both Blu-ray and DVD on April 19th.
Other notable releases this week include Smothered (which features a ton of horror icons and was directed by John Schneider of Smallville and Dukes of Hazzard fame), 15 Till Midnight, Classroom 6, Ip Man 3, German Angst and She Wolf Rising.

Following up on my previous article, “Watch 15 Great Horror Short Films,” which received a very positive response, I’ve researched and collected 13 more superb horror short films. As with the first article, I limited the choices to stand-alone live-action horror short films not produced for an anthology film and the selections were narrowed down by availability.
In further keeping with the criteria of the first article, animated horror short films and horror-comedy short films were excluded from consideration as both of these categories would make good subjects for their own individual articles. Sorry, Brutal Relax and Fist of Jesus fans.
It should also be noted that a number of highly regarded horror shorts readers might clamor to see in an article like this such as Ryan Haysom’s Yellow continue their long festival runs and have not been posted for online viewing and were therefore not considered for this piece.

The anthology horror film is back in the wake of the success of chapter-style horror films like The Theatre Bizarre (2011) and its announced follow-up, V/H/S (2012), the soon-to-be-released sequel V/H/S 2 (2013) and The ABC’s of Death (2012).
While this movement generates a good deal of conversation about the fondly remembered Amicus productions of the 1960’s and 1970’s like Dr. Terror’s House Of Horrors (Freddie Francis, 1965), Torture Garden (Freddie Francis, 1967), The House That Dripped Blood (Peter Duffell, 1971) and Asylum (Roy Ward Baker, 1972) among others, the comparison is not exactly accurate across the board.
While the segments of V/H/S are unified by shared visual style and a wraparound story, The Theatre Bizarre and The ABC’s of Death come off as collections of essentially unrelated horror short films loosely bound by a flimsy wraparound segment in the case of The Theatre Bizarre or a basic concept as...

Anthologies are rather prevalent in the horror genre as of late, and by late, I mean in the past few years. Trick r’ Treat seemed to have ushered in an era of anthologies that tried to be similar to Creepshow in that they have all tried to create an image that is lasting. Though many disagree with me, I think Chillerama was competent for what it was trying to achieve. I don’t think it’s amazing or that it will be talked about years from now, but it was not a horrible addition to the sub-genre. Deadtime Stories was a miss but does anyone think that a film with Romero’s name attached with actually be good? So here we are with The Theatre Bizarre, a cheaply made anthology that combines the work of 7 directors (six stories, one connecting thread). Each director was given a set amount of money...

Mainstream horror entered something of a grey zone during the 1990s as even fans of the tentpole slasher franchises got bored with sequels and rehashes. When people recall the films from the ’90s that actually scared or disturbed them, there’s a good chance those movies weren’t horror films per se. Horror continued to crossbreed with other genres, and a number of films emerged where investigations led to the uncovering of horror in the ‘real world.’ The serial killer movie in particular took on a new lease of life after the unprecedented success at the box office and Oscars of Jonathan Demme’s The Silence of the Lambs, based on Thomas Harris’s novel.
“Silence” is the third film I’ve mentioned in this series to take inspiration from the real-life killer Ed Gein; the other two are Psycho and The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. Three very different movies,...

When the Fantasia International Film Festival returns to set Montreal ablaze this summer, the fantastic film festival – one of the largest and most influential of its kind in the world – will be celebrating its 15th anniversary with an astonishing three-week showcase of international genre cinema, from July 14th to August 7th, 2011.

What is Morris County? It's a small congregation of sleepy suburban municipalities in Northern New Jersey spanning a total of 468 miles. Just a few short miles from the New York borderline, Morris County is the wealthiest in its state and ranked sixth in the nation. It's an economic oasis in a sea of filth and permanent financial recession. For a state notorious for political corruption, gambling, strip malls, diners, adult book stores, and seedy truck stops, Morris County stands apart as an idealistic reflection of Norman Rockwell's America. Let's face it, there's good reason why NJ has been stamped the arm pit of America and long rumored to be the earthly location for the 9 Gates of Hell.
But Morris County is more than a geographic marker; it's also a feeling, foreboding omen, and state of mind. It is also the debut feature film by Matthew Garret. An anthology of...

A true independent filmmaker, Douglas Buck's short films have made him a recognizable name in the festival circuit. Beginning his filmmaking career in the early 90s, shooting his films on Long Island, Buck pretty quickly managed to build up a following. His films meld gore-based horror with harrowing stories of American tragedy, and attract a jumble of gore hounds and film snobs. His work speaks equally to both audiences, detailing blood and violence alongside delicate meditation on human nature and reaction to horrifying circumstances, all contained in suburban households. His first three films, Cutting Moments, Home, and Prologue, have been compiled into a trilogy titled Family Portraits. The three films have a distinct air of low budget horror, yet it is not a very common horror in movies, it is a domestic one. The grainy bleakness of 16mm makes them feel visually raw, and long static shots supplement the disquieting content.

We learned this afternoon that Metaluna Productions and Douglas Buck (Sisters, Family Portraits, Cutting Moments) have wrapped up the shooting of the teaser for the forthcoming feature film project The Broken Imago, to be directed by Douglas. The teaser was shot in Super 35mm (scope) in Argentina on June 1-3 and is currently in post production. A vengeful nature has unleashed a powerful virus from the worlds diminishing rainforests. Transmitted through air and touch, the virus physically assaults the doomed infected, violently twisting their bodies into strange intolerable shapes. Within weeks of the first reported outbreaks, the members of an elite Catholic boarding school on a remote island lose communication with the outside world. Facing the terrible possibility of the end of the world, they begin to struggle amongst themselves. The virus hits and they realize they were wrong. Civilization isnt ending. Only the adults are dying.
