A young newspaper reporter, whom the girl knows from waiting on him at the restaurant where she works, reads the note for her. She refuses to tell them the baby was abandoned and fatherless, because she was herself, and confesses, in order to save the baby from being branded a bastard, that she stole it. The reporter goes to the jail and elicits the truth from her. And then proposes to her and adopts the baby.—Les Adams <longhorn1939@suddenlink.net>
- Naneta, born outside the social pale and without another name, is an outcast in the village of San Leuzi, in the Italian mountains. An immigration agent from New York comes to the village, and a neighbor suggests to Mother Maria, who has given a "home" to the nameless one, that she send Naneta to America. She arrives In New York and goes to work in the restaurant of Carlos Lupoli in the Italian quarter of the lower East Side, where she meets Donald White, a yet-to-arrive short story writer, who comes to Carlos' restaurant to absorb spaghetti and atmosphere. Entering her home that night, Naneta finds a baby on the stairs, with a note pinned to its dress and she lakes the bambino' to her room, deciding to keep it for her very own. The next day she gives White the note, asking him to read it to her, but telling nothing about finding the baby. That night Naneta is arrested on suspicion, because of having an unknown baby in her possession, and White, hearing of the arrest, rushes to the rescue. She refuses to tell anyone about finding the baby, not wanting it known that, like herself, the child has no father, but maintains that she has stolen the baby, which fastens guilt upon her. White relates to the perplexed Judge the circumstance of the note, which at the time he had taken to be a hoax. The magistrate is interested and together they devise a plan to force the truth from Naneta. When she is brought in the Judge says abruptly, "The woman who deserted this baby has relented and wants it back." Naneta is shocked, and cries, "No, No, She canta have it. She is trow it away one time." There is a finish packed tight with heart throbs.—Moving Picture World synopsis
