Review James Stansfield 25 Sep 2013 - 08:43
Channel 5 still doesn't seem to be scheduling Archer regularly, but James is on the case. Here's his review of the latest episode...
This review contains spoilers.
4.6 Once Bitten
I’m going out on a limb here but I generally assume that the main reasons we love Archer are the highly risqué comments that these characters come out with in the work place, combined with the egotistical off-the-rails-James-Bond persona of its leading man. Sentimentally touching moments aren’t something that we immediately associate with the show but on the few occasions they do happen, they work rather well. Like the cancer storyline in season two’s Placebo Effect and to a lesser extent the relationship between Sterling and Pam that developed in season three, the humanisation of Archer doesn’t happen often, but it helps keep him a likeable character, as opposed to an arrogant douche.

Master Spy Sterling Archer is dashing, dangerous, drunken, and overly educated? Archer is a rare gem among American animated television shows. Not only does it contain the foul-mouthed adolescent sex humour we have come to love, but also blends in seamlessly obscure literary references with subtle dialogue or the occasional heavy handed over explanation. Agent Sterling Archer proves in each dangerous Isis orchestrated mission that he has not only intensely studied The Art of Seduction and the Kama Sutra, but many other great works of literary genius as well.
While “literally” every episode contains some reference to literature or literary concepts, we have narrowed the list down to ten obscure fan favorites. We have also included which episode the reference can be found in for quick reference when one needs to wow their friends with a blend of television and literary knowledge.
Spoiler Warning: If you have not delved into...

As 2011 comes to a close, EW.com wanted to honor some of the hardworking names and faces from behind the scenes for their outstanding achievements. The absurdist FX espionage comedy Archer has always bravely plumbed the depths of hilarious depravity, but the season 2 episode “Placebo Effect” was a bad-taste masterpiece. Titular superspy Sterling Archer is suffering from breast cancer, and discovers that his anti-cancer drugs are actually placebos cooked up by the Irish mob as a money-making scheme. This initiates an episode-long bloodsoaked vengeance rampage. Archer plays a grisly game of Family Feud (the penalty for not telling him what...

Chazz Palminteri is back!
Sure, he’s a permanent movie mobster, but Palminteri also appeared on “Mf” last season as Shorty, one of Jay’s oldest friends. In that episode, Mitchell planted in his dad’s head the notion that Shorty is gay. Of course, this revelation leads to all kinds of awkwardness. But it turns out Shorty’s “secret” was he owes $20,000 to a bookie. Aha. Not gay.
This week, he’s having dinner with Jay and Gloria…...

"Placebo Effect" was the second half of a dark, unusually complex two-part episode of Archer (picking up where "Stage Two" left off). How did the TV Fanatic staff feel about it?
We break it down here in our weekly Archer Round Table Q&A:
What was your favorite Archer quote from last night?
Dr. Toboggan: Lana - "Chain smoking joints the size of tampons." Archer - "Eww." Lana - "It's just a figure of speech."
Mark F: Archer: "Survey Says..."
Eric H: I'd love to just recite the entire Family Feud scene (best scene ever!) here, but I'll keep it simple with: "Hmm. Cock flavored spit? Well you never know what's gonna be on the board! Let me see cock-flavored spit!"
Archer's hair is his fifth best feature? Name his top four.
Dr. Toboggan: 1. Woodhouse. 2 His liver. 3. Turtlenecks. 4. His selflessness. 5 His spy tools (poison pen whose cap slips off for...

Archer recap: Season 2, episode 9 - "Placebo Effect"
Synopsis
Archer isn't feeling any negative effects of chemotherapy, and no wonder, because Krieger discovers all his cancer drugs are placebos, namely Zima and candy corn. (At least the weed works.) This understandably rubs our super spy the wrong way, especially because he's reeling from the loss of his new friend Ruth, an elderly, Regis-loving woman. So Archer and Lana set out on a merciless murderous rampage, delivering bloody retribution on the Irish mobsters producing the counterfeit cancer drugs, all the while sparkin' doobs and filming the entire sordid affair.

If there ever was an episode of a cartoon - sorry animated series - that would make people take animation as seriously as its live action brethren, Archer's "Placebo Effect" would be it.
Bold claim? Absolutely. But I'm here to back it up. So grab a drink and sit down because unlike my usual short Archer reviews, where I only point out Lol moments, this one's going to be a little longer.
That drink you grabbed... I'm hoping you did Sterling and Malory proud and made it alcoholic. Preferably some whiskey on the rocks. Because I know I needed one the first time I watched it.
Archer is usually fairly light-hearted, despite its adult nature and violence. But tonight Adam Reed and company took us on a dark adventure.
The first time I watched the episode, it was back-to-back with the episode's predecessor, "Stage Two," and in a pitch-black room at night.

As I've already stated in my review of this week's Archer episode, part two of the cancer series of episodes is definitely the most creative, darkest episode in the series' history. Why?
Well, when Archer finds out the chemotherapy medicine he was taking was no more than a "Placebo Effect," he seeks revenge against the men behind the swap of his medicine.
Ready to see just how crazy and dark things get when Archer rampages? Watch the promo below to get a small taste and then come back Thursday night at 10:30 Est to discuss. Because we can't wait to have someone to talk to about it!

So I stay up way too late last night doing the episode guide I should have done yesterday morning but the site was down due to a snafu by our web host. I wake up this morning at 5:15 determined to get my morning post done in a timely manner … to find a half-dozen e-mails in my in box saying the site is down again. Ugh. Sorry about that guys – hopefully the issue’s been fixed. I hope. I miss Draknet. *sigh*
But nothing wipes away the stress and cranky of a downed site like watching Stephen’s joy machine. Before I start talking about the show, can I just say what a gorgeous...

#1 movie predicted correctly: 3 Weeks in a Row 1. Body of Lies It's a good film, but the tracking is off and I think people are still freaked out about anything involving "Iraq." I don't know why I quoted Iraq there. Deal with it. Anyhow, I'm going lower than the general consensus here. Estimate: $16.9 million 2. Beverly Hills Chihuahua I like a 53% bleed because City of Ember will grab some kiddie bucks. You can't beat that logic. Or your children. Estimate: $13.8 million 3. The Express I don't think anyone really wants to see this. We're on the verge of electing our first minority as Prez - who wants to dip back 50 years? Not me. Plus I could just watch real football on television. Can we just get a non-subtext / message football film anytime soon? Even Varsity Blues had a silly message. I'm starting to hate messages. Estimate: $12.2 million 4. Eagle Eye I love that they are using Hammond quotes.
