Nordisk Film & TV Fond has unveiled the list of Nordic graduation students and their projects running for the $30,000 (NOK250,000) pitch prize and $6,000 (Nok 50,000) special mention prize at Nordic Talents (Aug 31-Sept 2).
Petri Kemppinen, Nordisk Film & TV Fond CEO, said: “This year we have many projects targeting children and young audiences, and several comedies. The competition to get in was tougher as for the first time we asked applicants to submit a development plan for their project. I think this was helpful for both the students and the selection group. It is also interesting to note the 60/40 female representation in the submissions and selection.”
In addition to the pitching sessions, Nordic Talents will screen the graduation films of all selected film students.
This year’s Nordic Talents jury comprises Norwegian director/writer Sara Johnsen, Danish animation director/comics artist Anders Morgenthaler, Swedish producer Lars Blomgren of Filmlance, Finnish writer/producer Petja Peltomaa of Yellow Film & TV and Kristina...

BBC Worldwide North America announced today the acquisition of Queen And Country, the latest film by five-time Academy Award nominated director and writer John Boorman (Hope and Glory, Excalibur, The General, Deliverance), securing all rights in North America.
The film, which Boorman has announced will be his last, premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2014 and was acquired after making its North American debut during Film Comment’s special screening at the 52nd New York Film Festival earlier this month.
Queen And Country introduces Callum Turner (Ripper Street, Borgias) to the big screen and also stars one of Variety’s “Top 10 Actors to Watch” Caleb Landry Jones (X-Men: First Class), David Thewlis (War Horse, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban) and Vanessa Kirby (About Time). "A Bitter Taste of Freedom" is a Personal Portrait of a Late Friend and a Nation That's Lost Its Way
Forgive my usual instinct to compare new films with old, and docs with narratives, but going into Marina Goldovskaya's new documentary, "A Bitter Taste of Freedom," I couldn't help but think of Joel Schumacher's "Veronica Guerin." There have been other female journalists assassinated for their prying, I'm sure, but Guerin and Anna Politkovskaya, the Russian reporter at the center of "Bitter," are probably the most famous. In Schumacher's drama (and no, I haven't seen John Mackenzie's earlier, names-changed version, "When the Sky Falls"), Guerin is portrayed by Cate Blanchett as more pestering than penetrating, an obnoxiously forthcoming investigator who may…...

Film director whose career took him from gritty television plays to Hollywood thrillers
People who talk wistfully of the "golden age of British television drama" are often accused of viewing the past through the rosy lens of nostalgia. But a clear-eyed examination of the era proves that such slots as the BBC's The Wednesday Play (1964-70) and Play for Today (1970-84) were unsurpassed as breeding grounds for talented directors such as John Mackenzie, who has died after a stroke aged 83. Like most of his contemporaries who gained their experience by working in television – Philip Saville, Michael Lindsay-Hogg, Ken Loach, Mike Newell, Michael Apted and Mike Leigh – Mackenzie went on to make feature films, notably his superb London-based gangster picture, The Long Good Friday (1980).
The television background trained Mackenzie to work quickly on taut and realistic narratives, within a tight budget and on schedule. One of his first jobs was as...

Shank BannerMo Ali's first film is a futuristic titled called Shank. The film takes place five years from now in a fantasy created London, where gangs rule the streets. The chances that London, England could fall to gang warfare is unlikely, as Britain has survived Roman, Scandanavian, Irish, Scottish, French, Spanish, German and many more invasions. However, this is a fantasy world created by first time director Ali, with support from writer Paul Van Carter.
And a deadly fantasy world this is! Death is a common occurrence in Shank, with a kill or be killed atmosphere fueling further violence. One brother must rise above the blood soaked streets to stand for a better tomorrow in this trailer for Shank below. If you are feeling the post-apocalyptic vibe of this UK shot film, then get set for the DVD launch October 5th through the Revolver Entertainment Group, with DVD special features provided.

According to Swizz Beatz, helping out the devastated nation of Haiti is not only positive, but necessary.
"I think the important reason to donate to this cause, no matter how much money is being raised or has been raised ... you gotta understand, Haiti has been in shambles way before this event," the producer said backstage at the "Hope for Haiti Now: A Global Benefit for Earthquake Relief" telethon. "Now you have the real madness that puts the focus on Haiti. If you look at what they been going through before and what they been going through now, it's gonna take more than money. It's never enough money.
