Sara Pezzini is the strong, enchanted, and totally awesome heroine of the Witchblade TV and Top Cow comic book series, is now getting her own Witchblade video game.
Making the announcement at this past weekend's Comic-Con International in San Diego, Top Cow President Matt Hawkins spoke to ComicBookResources about how long he's being trying to get a game off the ground:
"I've been trying to develop a Witchblade video game for a very long time and developing video games on comic book properties is actually very hard," he said. "With the costs of producing an Xbox 360 and PS3 game pushing $50 million now, [video game companies] want either massively preawareness branded properties or they want to internally generate and build their own characters, as you see with a lot of publishers."
The cop-turned-avenger-for-justice Sarah Pezzini is one of Top Cow's most famous and sought-after characters. Nay, make that definitely their top character. She has...

Flush from the success of “Twilight” and its sequel “New Moon,” Summit Entertainment has picked up the film rights for Top Cow’s “Alibi.”
According to the Hollywood Reporter, John Hlavin (“The Shield”) is onboard to write the adaptation. Halvin was also recently tapped to write the fourth “Underworld” film. “Alibi” co-creator and Top Cow President Matt Hawkins is also attached as an executive producer, along with Marc Silvestri.
An “Alibi” one shot written by Joshua Hale Fialkov with art by Jeremy Haun was published last year as part of Top Cow’s Pilot Season. The story follows a wealthily playboy named John Stephens whose high profile social life serves as the perfect cover for his twin brother Rick — a top-secret government assassin. The concept was created by Hawkins and Michael Renegar.

Established 1974! Our news column climbs a new treehouse.

The best thing about this weekend is, of course, the annual Treehouse Of Horror episode of The Simpsons (pictured). Believe it or don’t—this is the 20th Anniversary episode—and airs Sunday, 8 p.m. Est on Fox. This all-new chapter includes an Alfred Hitchcock parody, zombies and more. It’s preceded at 7:30 p.m. by a rerun of last season’s Treehouse (#19). Also on Fox, The Cleveland Show (8:30 p.m.) premieres “Birth of a Salesman” and American Dad (9:30 p.m.) debuts “Brains, Brains & Automobiles.” In between (at 9 p.m.), it’s a rerun of Family Guy, but o what a rerun! It’s the Stephen King anthology “Three Kings” (with guest voice work by George Wendt, Richard Dreyfuss and the late Roy Scheider). The specific King tales being spoofed are The Shawshank Redemption, Misery and The Body/Stand By Me.

Top Cow Productions, Inc. proudly announced today that Pilot Season 2009, an annual tradition that give fans the power to choose the next two Top Cow series based on a selection of one-shot “pilot” issues, will kick off with Pilot Season: Murderer #1. Due to arrive in comic books stores across the country on November 18, 2009, Pilot Season: Murderer #1 is 32 pages of moral torment in a character study conjured from the minds of Image Comics partners Robert Kirkman (The Walking Dead, Invincible) and Top Cow founder Marc Silvestri (X-Men/Dark Avengers: Utopia, The Darkness).
Kirkman writes the story of Jason Sparks, a man cursed to spend every waking moment being bombarded by the thoughts of strangers around him. Every dirty little secret and every hidden desire screams out at him in a cacophony of voices in his head. The only way to silent these voices, the only thing that buys Jason a moment of respite…...

Witchblade, published by Top Cow Productions, an imprint of Image Comics, was created by Top Cow editors Marc Silvestri and David Wohl, writers Brian Haberlin, Christina Z, and artist Michael Turner. The series follows the lives of two women in New York City, 'Sara Pezzini' and 'Danielle Baptiste'. Sara is an NYPD homicide detective who comes into possession of the 'Witchblade', a supernatural, sentient artifact with immense destructive and protective powers. The weapon has bonded with various women throughout history, Danielle being the most recent. Others who have come into contact with the Witchblade include Cleopatra and Joan of Arc. Sara struggles to hone the powers of the Witchblade and fend off those with a nefarious interest in it, including entrepreneur 'Kenneth Irons'. Witchblade was previously adapted into a 2-season Toronto-lensed TV series in 2001-2002, starring actress Yancy Butler as Sara. A new live-action feature, based on the...

Transformers starlet Megan Fox was reportedly offered the lead role in the planned film adaptation of the Witchblade comic book when she visited this summer's San Diego Comic-Con.
It's claimed that when Ms Fox was approached and told she was perfect for the part, she revealed she was a big fan of the Top Cow Publishing title.
No official news of casting or filming followed so what's happening with this movie? And what's it all about?
The comic centres on NYPD homicide detective Sarah Pezzini who finds a supernatural artefact resembling a jewel-encrusted metal gauntlet. This so-called Witchblade has incredible powers and bonds to her body, healing her from fatal wounds. The title was adapted into a 2001-2002 TV show starring Yancy Butler and also an anime series in 2004.
Internet Movie Database lists The Witchblade as a film for release in 2010 and Top Cow president Matt Hawkins has now given an update on the project.

Top Cow president Matt Hawkins has said that the forthcoming Witchblade movie will be very different from the comic. Speaking to MTV News, Hawkins confirmed that they are still looking for a writer for the project, which has already secured financing and acquired Michael Rymer (Battlestar Galactica) as director. He said that Top Cow has devised a new idea for the plot. It's been a while since we checked in with the Top Cow crew about "The Witchblade," the planned feature film based on the publisher's long-running, fan-favorite comic book series about a female police detective who fights evil with the aid of a supernatural artifact. Back in May, Top Cow president Matt Hawkins said the project was still looking for a writer, but financing had already been secured and director Michael Rymer ("Battlestar Galactica," "Queen of the Damned") was attached.
During a recent conversation with Hawkins, the Top Cow chief said very little's changed in that respect—but they have come up with a new take on the movie's plot.
"We sat down with a couple of guys, [co-producer] Platinum Studios and Marc Silvestri and I, and we banged out a three-page document that says here’s the basic story idea we want to do," said Hawkins. "It’s sort of a...

Until recently, it was doubtful if director Matthew Vaughn's latest movie, Kick-Ass, a dark teen "superhero" tale adapted from the comic book by Mark Millar, would get a theatrical release. Before Lionsgate picked up the film, Millar even went so far as to plead with fans at Wizard World Chicago to go home and write about how great they thought Kick-Ass was going to be.
Millar explained that "the whores in Hollywood" had trouble with the strong language and extreme violence of the film, leaving us to wonder how graphic it could be. Fortunately, actress Yancy Butler (Witchblade), who has a cameo in Kick-Ass, recently described some of the movie's footage at the Dallas Comic-Con.
Nicolas Cage's daughter (in the film), who wants to be a superhero basically, climbs up this gangster's back ... shoots him from below, and it turns into a comic book, where you see this blood splat like you would,...

Wait, where was I when it was announced that the Pang Brothers were directing a live-action version of Top Cow Comic’s “The Darkness” comic book? Geez, I must have missed that one. Anyways, according to Bloody-Disgusting, they’ve gotten word that “G.I. Joe’s” Duke, Channing Tatum has been cast as the lead in the film adaptation of the comic book, which was created by Marc Silvestri, Garth Ennis, and David Wohl back in the early days of Image Comics. Here’s what Wikipedia says about the comic and the Darkness in question: The comic’s central subject is the power known as The Darkness and its wielders. The Darkness is an ageless power dating back beyond human history. It is linked with the Angelus and the Witchblade. The Darkness is passed down a family line from father to son, leaving the previous user (and taking his life...

This week was, to say the least, a Big week in comics. My personal Pull List was 23 issues of all new books. Comic stores even said how expensive a week it was just by the sheer volume of books released. I’m just doing my best to keep you informed with the newest quality and best ongoing series from around the comics world. With that said, let’s get to the pulls.
Pull of the Week:
Dark Avengers / Uncanny X-Men: Utopia #1 – Marvel – $3.99
Score: 8.5
The new superstar creative team of 2009 has finally arrived. Matt Fraction and Marc Silvestri may be the best combination of writer and artist to be placed on any series thus far this year. This one shot issue does a fantastic job of setting events in to motion for the Utopia crossover as well as the formation of the Dark X-Men team.

Years ago the original Witchblade, Sarah Pezzini, made the transition from mystical (and half-naked) armored warrior to civilian mom. Now, it seems, acting is imitating comics with the former star of TNT’s “Witchblade” television series Yancy Butler taking on a more matronly role in the movie adaptation of Mark Millar and John Romita Jr.’s “Kick-Ass.”
In an interview with Comics Continuum, Butler discussed her roughly week-and-a-half trip to London in November during which time she filmed her scenes and took in the large scale production and its special effects.
“It’s amazing, I’ve never seen anything like that,” Butler said.
Joining a cast that includes Nicolas Cage, Chloe Mortez and Aaron Johnson, Butler plays Angie D’Amico, mother of the mysterious Red Mist (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) and wife of the villainous druglord Frank D’Amico. Her character has yet to appear in the “Kick-Ass” comic, but is described...

“Witchblade,” the long-running Top Cow property created by Marc Silvestri and Michael Turner (among others), has enjoyed a celebrated comic book run for the past two decades and has even seen anime and live-action television adaptations — but as the Splash Page archives will tell you, there’s been very little movement on a big screen version of the sultry comic book heroine.
Newsarama sat down with Top Cow’s Matt Hawkins to figure out why it is that Sara Pezzini and her scantily-clad but nonetheless mystical armor has veered away from movie theaters. According to Hawkins, it’s not for lack of trying — they just don’t have the right material to work with yet.
“We simply do not yet have a script yet that we all like,” revealed Hawkins. “We had a window to go into production that has clearly passed but the project is very much alive and kicking.

Editor's note: I received a text message yesterday from my friend Christian. He's written a couple articles here in the past, wrote a thing or two for Cinefex back in the day, and genuinely knows his stuff. The text message? "I take back everything I ever said about Jean-Claude Van Damme. Jcvd is awesome." Since Jcvd is new to home video this week, I asked Christian to write a review.
Jcvd
Starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, François Damiens, and Zinedine Soualem
Directed by Mabrouk El Mechri
Rated R
In the interest of full disclosure, I’ve said unkind things about Jean-Claude Van Damme in the past. For example, I remember the time he sat in the row directly in front of me at an opening night, Grauman’s Chinese screening of Saving Private Ryan. My friends and I heckled him mercilessly, yelling, “Down in front, Frenchy!” though we knew he hailed from Belgium.

Fox Television Studios is entering the world of graphic novels, signing a development deal with Spacedog to create three projects slated for publication that will simultaneously be developed into television projects and content for digital media platforms. As part of the deal, Spacedog, a Los Angeles-based branded entertainment and interactive marketing agency, will co-develop and produce three projects slated to be published as graphic novels through Top Cow Comics, known for its Tomb Raider and Witchblade franchises. At the same time, the stories are being developed as live-action TV projects that will be shopped to broadcast and cable networks, said David Madden, executive vp scripted programming at Fox TV Studios. "We're basically developing the stories simultaneously. ... There are writers working on it from the comic book side and writers we are bringing in on the TV side," he said. "Each group is telling the same story, with the goal that we'll have a comic book/graphic novel that will work in its own right but also have been designed beforehand with the notion of springboarding a series."...
