Roll, Thunder, Roll! (1949) Poster

Jim Bannon: Red Ryder

Quotes

  • Ace Hanlon : I never saw you before.

El Conejo : Then take one good look, senor, because you no see El Conejo ever again - or anything else!

Ace Hanlon : Now wait a minute...

El Conejo : A sheep-stealing hombre who think he can make robberies and rustling and then blaming on El Conejo... Amigo, he is as good like dead.

Ace Hanlon : Who says I pull robberies and then blame them on you?

El Conejo : Me! El Conejo, he says so - and El Conejo know because he make it his business to find out. I am going to kill you... .

Red Ryder : [bursting into Hanlon's saloon]  Drop those guns! You're not going to kill anybody.

  • [Red shows Happy the special barber scissors that he found at the scene of the crime]

Happy Loomis : Well, we better get on with the shave. You know, in all the years I've been barbering, only once have I cut a man real bad. Poor fella - he died. And now, there's going to be another. It won't hurt, Red. This razor's almighty sharp. Just one push...

Red Ryder : You push and I'll pull... the trigger! That's a gun stickin' in your belly.

  • [caught searching through drawers in Happy's barbershop, Red improvises and asks for a shave]

Happy Loomis : You don't need no shave.

Red Ryder : [running his hand along his jaw]  Mostly here, Happy.

Happy Loomis : I see. Gotta keep the old chin in shape to lead with it, huh?

  • El Conejo : You understand there is nothing - what you call it - nothing personal when I kill you.

Red Ryder : Oh, sure. It's something you'd do for anybody, even someone who hadn't just saved you from getting hung.

  • Carol Loomis : Red, do you honestly think they'll try to break El Conejo out of jail?

Red Ryder : I do. Do you, Bill?

Marshal Bill Faugh : Well, like you say, Red, if someone else has been pulling these raids, they can't very well pull any more and blame El Canejo while he's locked up here.

Red Ryder : That's how I figure it. If they do try to break him out, and we catch them at it, we not only catch the bunch we're really looking for, but we can also, at the same time, prove El Canejo's innocence.

Little Beaver : You betchum, Red Ryder got um right idea.

Red Ryder : Thanks, son, and if I've figured this thing wrong and El Conejo's own men try to get him loose, well, this trap oughta spring on somebody.

  • [a small rancher's stock has been stolen and his house and barn burned to the ground]

Duchess : Who do you imagine would want them few scrawny cows of Josh's?

Red Ryder : I wish I knew. The whole thing beats me.

Marshal Bill Faugh : What do you mean, Red?

Red Ryder : I mean these two silver conchas I found alongside Culvert's barn - or what used to be his barn.

Buckskin : Well, dad blame it to Dixie. So he's the one that done it, huh? El Conejo?

Red Ryder : Well, those silver conchas are El Conejo's trademark, all right, the same kind that have been found at the scene of the last nine raids, but somehow it doesn't ring true.

    Duchess : Doesn't ring true?

Red Ryder : Mind you, I don't know El Conejo. I've never even seen him, but from all I've heard, what stealing he's done, has been to help the poor, giving back what somebody had originally stolen from them. Bill, El Conejo's a Spanish Californian, isn't he?

    Marshal Bill Faugh : Uh-huh.

Little Beaver : You ever known him to operate except in Texas?

Marshal Bill Faugh : No, I guess not. That is before we started finding these conchas around here the past few weeks.

Red Ryder : Sure, we found the conchas, but they could be planted by somebody else.

Little Beaver : Red Ryder, who else could lay the conchas?

Red Ryder : Son, that's our job to find out.

  • Ace Hanlon : Now look, Ryder, you're not running this town.

Red Ryder : Neither are you, much as you'd like to be.

  • Buckskin : What's the matter? Ain't you goin' in, Red?

Red Ryder : Yeah, but you two better wait out here. Take Little Beaver over the store and buy him some gumdrops. I'm goin' in to see Ace alone.

Buckskin : [to Little Beaver]  Now see, that's the way it goes, son. Ours is not to reason why, our is just to do and eat gumdrops.

  • [after pummeling Wolf in a brawl in Ace's saloon]

Red Ryder : Thought you were going to throw me out, Wolf. Shall I wait?

  • [Buckskin has dozed off while Red explained his plan to trap the outlaws]

Red Ryder : Is that right, Buckskin?

Buckskin : Huh? Why sure, sure. Any durn fool knows that.

Red Ryder : And that's why you know it, I guess.

  • [Happy Loomis flees after his plan to ambush Buckskin and the marshal fails]

Red Ryder : [to El Conejo and Felipe]  You fellas ride up ahead and see if Buckskin and the Marshal are all right. We just had a audience. I'm goin' back and find out who it was.

  • El Conejo : I am looking for Ace Hanlon. No one else will be hurt... .*I said* I am looking for Ace Hanlon.

    Red Ryder : I'm Hanlon.

El Conejo : You are the Ace Hanlon. I'm disappointed! I expect to find a brave man.

Red Ryder : You put that gun away and I'll show you how brave I am. What do you want of me?

El Conejo : You know who I am, Hanlon? Never mind, I tell you. I am El Conejo. You know why I come here? I tell you that, too. I come here to kill you.
