DCI Ross Tanner is a top-notch copper who produces good results. In his latest case, he's leading the investigation in to the murder of 19-year old Matthew Bendrix who was beaten to death near his home. With his regular DI testifying in court, he's assigned DI Catherine Tully who has only recently completed the serious crimes course and is now involved in her first murder investigation. Tanner has a much bigger problem however: he is going blind. He is suffering from a rare viral infection that is attacking his retina. There is no cure and the prognosis is not good. DI Tully recognizes the problem and offers to be his eyes if he in turn supports her more in front of the squad and makes sure she gets whatever credit is due her in the investigation. As for the dead boy, the solution lies in a clever deception.
