Ayo Edebiri‘s upgrade to lead for Season 2 of “The Bear” has been an unqualified success. She won the Golden Globe and Critics Choice Award for Best Comedy Actress in January, along with the Screen Actors Guild Awards’ single comedy actress prize. In the midst of all that, she took home the Best Comedy Supporting Actress statuette for Season 1 at the delayed Emmy ceremony. And now Edebiri is the odds-on favorite to win the Best Comedy Actress Emmy for Season 2 in September, which would put her on a short list of women who’ve won both comedy lead and supporting trophies.

Known for his acclaimed screenplays with The Social Network, A Few Good Men, and TV’s The West Wing, Aaron Sorkin made his directorial debut in 2017 with Molly’s Game, an adaptation of Molly Bloom’s 2014 memoir of the same name. The story initially shows Bloom (Jessica Chastain) as a promising skier whose dedication and calculations cannot match an unseen variable in the form of a frozen pinecone.
The film then cuts to twelve years later, when the FBI arrest Molly for running illegal gambling operations. The story then unfolds across two timelines, with the present showing Molly preparing for court with the help of New York lawyer Charlie Jaffey (Idris Elba), while the past shows how former skier went from a career-ending injury to establishing herself running high-stakes poker games.

Political turmoil and humor can make for great television. From those based on real life, like The Crown, to those with a fictional premise like Anatomy of a Scandal, telling the stories of political figures is a balancing act. These political shows on Netflix can re-contextualize lived realities, and shine new light on stories that were always thought to be true. Shows like Designated Survivor and The West Wing paved the way for a genre of show that at best can inspire, and at worse, can repulse.

Seven years ago, Donald Glover won his first two Emmys, Best Comedy Actor and Best Comedy Directing for “Atlanta.” While he missed out on nominations last year for the final season of his FX series — he did receive a writing bid for “Swarm” — Glover is back in the hunt this cycle with “Mr. & Mrs. Smith.” Inspired by the Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie film of the same name, the spy series is competing in drama, which means Glover could become just the second man and third person to win lead Emmys in comedy and drama.

Aaron Sorkin wove no shortage of jaw-dropping surprises into his four seasons of The West Wing, still the writer's perennial accomplishment when it comes to American television. There's the assassination attempt in the Season 1 finale, for one, the three-seasons-long ricochet effect of President Jed Bartlet (Martin Sheen) concealing his multiple sclerosis, the kidnapping of his daughter Zoe (Elisabeth Moss) to close out Sorkin's run on the show... we could go on. For a series built on the architecture of conversation, where 99% of the plot dramatics are internal yet reflecting the tenuous fate of the American nation, Sorkin adeptly sprinkled The West Wing with narrative minefields.

The United States is living in chaotic political times and art is most certainly reflecting life. Political dramas have always been all the rage, from dark thrillers like House of Cards and The Diplomat to more traditional peeks inside the White House in The West Wing and Madam Secretary to glossy limited series based on real scandals à la White House Plumbers and Gaslit. Shows about political journalists have become their own subgenre with everything from The Newsroom to Political Animals, the latter of which is a comedy-drama created by Greg Berlanti and stars Carla Gugino as a reporter.

Despite its actors dominating recent awards shows like the Emmys, Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards, “Succession” ended its run at Saturday’s SAG Awards having never won an individual trophy. (See the SAG winner’s list.) Four of its actors were nominated for this fourth and final season: Sarah Snook (as Shiv Roy) for best drama actress, and Brian Cox (as Logan Roy), Kieran Culkin (as Roman Roy) and Matthew Macfadyen (as Tom Wambsgans) for best drama actor. But they ended up losing to Elizabeth Debicki ( as Princess Diana) of “The Crown” and Pedro Pascal (as Joel) on “The Last of Us,” respectively. Not to be outdone, the “Succession” cast still did win the drama ensemble prize for the second time at the end of the night.

Pamela Salem, who portrayed Miss Moneypenny in the non-Eon James Bond movie Never Say Never Again, has passed away at the age of 80.
While Pamela Salem’s turn as Moneypenny was a one-off – and in a film that is widely not considered part of the 007 canon – her go at the beloved character can’t be ignored. Interestingly, despite how frequently the character appears in the Bond universe, she has only been played by a small selection of actresses: Lois Maxwell, Caroline Bliss, Samantha Bond, and Naomie Harris. But only Salem has the distinction of playing Miss Moneypenny just one time.
But not once was there any strange bad blood between Pamela Salem or her predecessors, particularly Maxwell. As per a 1984 interview (via The Hollywood Reporter), Salem said, “I had seen Moneypenny before, of course, in the earlier films played by Lois Maxwell…At first [the media] tried to stir things up between...

The NBC sitcom "Night Court" was a satirical take on the zany and chaotic underworld of the midnight shift at the courthouse. With an unconventional, free-loving judge at the helm of this circus, there's no telling what might happen. The series was such a massive hit that it ran for nine whole seasons, featuring a cast of relatively unknown actors that, when assembled, formed one of the most acclaimed ensembles of all time. The show won eight Primetime Emmys and was nominated no less than 32 times. "Night Court" won in a variety of categories, but the actor that ended up taking home the most gold was John Larroquette, who played egotistical D.A. Dan Fielding.
A "Night Court" reboot landed on NBC in 2023. Sadly, few members of the original cast are still around to reprise their old roles, and the show is comprised almost entirely of new characters. Harry Anderson,...

If you followed the many seasons of The West Wing, your gut instinct when pinpointing its best twist likely falls on one particular story arc. At the tail end of the show's fourth season, which also happened to be the final episode written by creator Aaron Sorkin himself, President Bartlet (Martin Sheen) was left to deal with the shocking kidnapping of his youngest daughter Zoe (Elisabeth Moss). This event ended the season on a cliffhanger, and the fallout would unfold over the first few episodes of the fifth season. However, this wasn't The West Wing's best twist.

Leo McGarry's death in The West Wing was inspired by the real-life death of actor John Spencer, who played the character. The loss was deeply felt by both the cast and the characters in the series. Leo McGarry was not only President Bartlet's Chief of Staff but also his best friend, making his death a significant plot point in the show. The storyline of Leo's death in The West Wing was foreshadowed in a previous season, where the character suffered a near-fatal heart attack, reflecting the unplanned death of actor John Spencer, who also died from a heart attack.
Leo McGarry appears in The West Wing's pilot episode and plays a prominent role as President Bartlet's Chief of Staff until his season 7 death. While Leo's death comes as a shock to the characters on the show, the plot point takes inspiration from a real-life tragedy that befell actor John Spencer.

“The Bear” will return with its third season in June on Hulu, FX Chairman John Landgraf announced Friday at the Television Critics Association winter press tour.
A specific date was not announced, but “The Bear’s” first two seasons premiered on June 23, 2022, and June 22, 2023, respectively, so one could assume Season 3 will arrive on June 20. Landgraf confirmed that Season 3 will be a binge drop once again, just like the first two, and not a weekly release.

Since the early 2000s, the film industry has expressed increased interest in understanding the ins and outs of running a nation. We saw it in Aaron Sorkin’s television masterpiece The West Wing, which gave audiences a glimpse at the everyday dilemmas of Washington insiders who truly care about making their country a better place. More recently, we have seen comedies like Parks & Recreation that delve into the ridiculousness of local politics, and Veep, which explored the moral degradation of a self-obsessed but indecisive vice president. Even one of Netflix's highest-rated and most-watched TV shows is The Crown, which chronicles the life of the late Queen Elizabeth II....

“I’m in need of a driver with a particular set of skills,” New Orleans-based Zimbabwean gangster The Horse (Zackary Momoh) tells Gray, to which Gray confidently responds, “Yeah, I can drive.”

Is the Apple Vision Pro set to be the next big thing in virtual reality? Apple is certainly banking on the device to be just that, as it has lined up more than 600 new apps designed specifically to run on the Vision Pro’s new operating system (Os) before the headset launches on Feb. 2. That would be Deputy White House Communications Director Sam Seaborn, Press Secretary C.J. Cregg, Deputy Chief of Staff Josh Lyman and Communications Director Toby Ziegler.
