Over the last half-decade, Laura Linney's character, Wendy Byrde, has undergone quite a journey on Netflix's "Ozark." When the show first launched in 2017, it was anchored more to the perspective of Wendy's husband, Marty Byrde (Jason Bateman), as he cast off his civilian life as a mild-mannered financial advisor and uprooted his family from Chicago to launder money for a Mexican drug cartel in Missouri. Comparisons between "Ozark" and "Breaking Bad" abounded, which initially seemed to leave Linney in the unenviable position of playing second fiddle to Marty as the mere "wife" in a show that was framed more from a male, "Walter White Collar" perspective.

The family of “Rust” cinematographer Halyna Hutchins has demanded that the Santa Fe Sheriff’s Office retract the trove of video footage it released showing the aftermath of the on-set shooting, saying it violated their right to decide what’s made public.
Hours of bodycam footage released Monday show multiple scenarios from the chaotic aftermath, including paramedics working on Hutchins as she lay dying from a gunshot wound.
The lawyer representing Hutchins’ husband and son, Brian Parish, said in a letter sent to the sheriff that the video violated their rights, calling for the Santa Fe Sheriff’s Office to retract it.
“The first time Mr. Hutchins saw the disturbing and unsettling video footage of his dying wife lying on the church floor was on Radar Online, an internet website,” Panish said in the letter, which was obtained Thursday by TheWrap.

Jeff Zucker’s abrupt exit from his role as CNN president on Wednesday is the result of a high-stakes game of grudges among media power players, including ousted network anchor Chris Cuomo and WarnerMedia chief Jason Kilar, multiple media insiders have told TheWrap. “This is Chris Cuomo’s revenge, and it worked,” one media veteran told TheWrap. “It was done deliberately.” While the gossip mill is churning around whether Cuomo planted a story about Zucker’s romantic relationship with CNN chief marketing officer Allison Gollust in Radar last month, Zucker himself said Wednesday that the information came out because of an investigation into Cuomo over his ouster in December and a dispute over an $18 million payout to the fired anchor. “As part of the investigation into Chris Cuomo’s tenure at CNN, I was asked about a consensual relationship with my closest colleague,” Zucker said in his statement. “I acknowledged...

If 2021 has been a calvacade of bad decisions, dashed hopes, and warning signs for cinema’s strength, the Criterion Channel’s monthly programming has at least buttressed our hopes for something like a better tomorrow. Anyway. The Channel will let us ride out distended (holi)days in the family home with an extensive Alfred Hitchcock series to bring the family together—from the established Rear Window and Vertigo to the (let’s just guess) lesser-seen Downhill and Young and Innocent—Johnnie To’s Throw Down and Orson Welles’ The Magnificent Ambersons in their Criterion editions, and some streaming premieres: Ste. Music is a universal language. You don’t have to understand the lyrics to feel the joys, the heartbreaks, and the frustrations expressed in a melody. You don’t have to pinpoint musical styles to feel the nostalgia a beat can invoke. For the likes of Bratty in Mexico to Anatomy Rabbit in Thailand, the gentle exploration of love is a palpable and common through line. For Sleepy Hallow in Brooklyn and PinkPantheress in the UK, their nods to ’90s production and expansion of classic international genres, respectively, both hold...

The path to global music stardom used to be pockmarked with potholes. Artists would have to scratch out regular radio play in their home countries before having a shot at international recognition, and even then, finding your way into the ears of fans from Argentina to Zambia wasn’t a guarantee. You needed to be discovered, and that wasn’t always easy.
Spotify’s Radar program is changing all that. The streaming service’s international emerging artist program aims to introduce a global community of fans to breakout artists that...

Directors Joe Dante (1984’s Gremlins) and Allan Arkush (1979’s Rock ‘n’ Roll High School) cut their teeth in Hollywood putting together trailers for Roger Corman films in the early 1970s and got the idea to make their own film by piecing together stock footage from other Corman pics and shooting a story around the clips. Armed with $55,000 from Mr. Corman, Hollywood Boulevard is the result. Released in 1976 on a smattering of screens, Hollywood Boulevard is a charming and entertaining send-up of Hollywood filmmaking which stars the incomparable (and sadly, the late) Candice Rialson as Candy Wednesday, a fresh-off-the-bus naïve blonde who, at the ripe old age of twenty-four, wants to be an actress and walks straight into the office of agent Walter Paisley (Dick Miller). Though producer Roger Corman’s contributions to independent cinema are arguably unparalleled, the enduring quality of his directorial efforts is another story. By the end of the 1950s, Corman had directed about two dozen of his own films in roughly five years, many of these derivative genre efforts rivaling the quality of Ed Wood. But 1959 found Corman trying to switch things up a bit, and he delivered two of his more flavorful works. Besides unleashing the Susan Cabot headliner The Wasp Woman (which remains a fun, eccentric commentary on feminine standards of beauty), Corman would skewer the pretentiousness of self-important artists and the hypocrisy of what defines art in A Bucket of Blood, a much more salacious title than the material warrants. Written by Charles B. Griffith, (who would go uncredited next to Corman on his The Little Shop of Horrors a year later), the film is an early lead...

Impeach My Bush: Menon’s Debut a Spirited Period Road Trip
Exploring a provocative dark chapter in the voting tendencies of the United States general public by revisiting the 2004 presidential elections, where incumbent George W. Bush defeated Senator John Kerry for a second term, director Meera Menon’s debut, Farah Goes Bang is clearly not meant to appease denizens of those red states. Instead, it perhaps recalls a distinct moment in time for those that valiantly fought against a tide of regression to support an unlikely candidate, as seen through the eyes of a woman of Iranian heritage on a spirited road trip to garner last minute votes in the swing state of Ohio. Much more than a mere political statement, Menon crafts a low-key character arc around an impressionable two week period that feels much less detrimental in retrospect.

A talentless would-be artist finds sudden success after accidentally covering his landlady's cat in clay - and wants more.
What do you want to be when you grow up? Many people have dreams that outstrip their abilities. Walter (Dick Miller) wants to be an artist. He hangs out in a popular beatnik café. He works hard to ingratiate himself with all the right people. But somehow it just doesn't happen - perhaps due to his complete lack of talent. Though he whines, he seems like a nice guy and we can empathise with his plight. But when he accidentally covers his landlady's cat in clay,...

Chicago – Attention Elvis Presley fans. Coming out a few months after what would have been his actual birthday on January 8th is the “Elvis 75th Birthday Collection” from 20th Century Fox, which includes seven of the King’s films in one set. With a few hits and a few more unheralded gems, the “75th Birthday Collection” has a very low price point (under $6 a movie) that might make it the perfect Father’s Day gift choice for the patriarch in your family.
DVD Rating: 3.5/5.0
With no special features and standard video/audio quality, the only notable thing about the “75th Birthday Collection” is the chance to have seven films from Presley’s career in one affordable set. With only the films that Elvis made under the MGM banner available, instantly recognizable hits like “Jailhouse Rock,” “Viva Las Vegas,” and “Girl Happy” are not included (but will be in a massive,...

Actor and author Chris Lemmon.
Chris Lemmon Sheds Light On Jack Lemmon: The Man Behind The Magic

Alex Simon
Contrary to popular belief, not all movie stars’ offspring had dysfunctional lives filled with drug abuse, domestic violence and self-destruction. Some children of stars have even gone on to live “normal” lives outside of La-la land, and hold their famous parents in high esteem. Take the case of Chris Lemmon. Born June 22, 1954 in L.A., Chris is the son of two-time Oscar winning actor Jack Lemmon and actress Cynthia Stone. Although his parents divorced when he was young, Chris remained close to both throughout their lives and penned a tribute to his father, (who passed in 2001) called A Twist of Lemmon in 2006, published by Algonquin Books.
A successful actor in his own right and a graduate of Cal Arts, Chris Lemmon most recently has collaborated with Sony Pictures Home Entertainment...

"Life is an obscure hobo, bumming a ride on the omnibus of art." The wit and wisdom of writer Charles B. Griffith, Roger Corman's hipper-than-thou alter-ego, is in even fuller flower here than in his classic followup, "Little Shop of Horrors", aided immeasurably by Dick Miller's indelible performance as psychotic busboy Walter Paisley. Update: Chuck passed away the week of 9/26/07 at the age of 77, leaving a legacy of brilliantly off-center, if unjustly underappreciated, satirical comedy.
