Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best show currently on TV?” can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: When was the first time you saw a TV character that you felt represented you or your experience? Who was it? How did you feel? (This is jumping on the #FirstTimeISawMe hashtag about representation.)
Eric Deggans (@deggans), NPR
This is a tough question, because I don’t think I’ve seen a character like me yet on television (black comics nerd who loves playing drums, has a thirst for pop culture, spent his teens grooving to Frank Zappa and Parliament/Funkadelic and has a passion for racial issues and opposing stereotypes in media. Nope, haven’t seen that character yet). But the first time I saw...

With the upcoming release of The Dark Tower and It: Part 1 - The Loser’s Club, we look back at the successes and failures of previous Stephen King film adaptations.
Stephen King published his first novel in 1974. That novel, Carrie, would go on to sell more than a million copies in its first year of publication. The popularity of this book resulted in a movie adaptation two years later. As Stephen King released more novels, his popularity as an author grew, and many more films, miniseries, TV shows, and graphic novels came to be based on his writings. Today, King is one of the most well known and successful modern writers. Although he has written in many genres (including contributions to comic books), he is best known for his horror writings.
58 films have been released so far that have been based at least in some part on the writings of Stephen King.

Do you recall when people had an issue with Looney Tunes? They were too violent, too loud, and too damaging to the minds of youngsters? Yeah, go ahead and tell those people to watch Rocko’s Modern Life: Static Cling. It’s a funny cartoon to be certain but if you don’t fully explain to your kid what they’re seeing and why it’s amusing, it might have the opportunity to really mess with their heads. Rocko is a cartoon that might be better for kids that are at least able to sort fact from fiction and just enjoy the slightly insane feel

Recently I had the opportunity to visit the Nickelodeon Animation Studio and their new Entertainment Lab in Burbank, CA. I chatted with Chris Young, Senior Vice President for the Entertainment Lab; Chris Savino, creator of The Loud House; and Farnaz Esnaashari-Charmatz, creator of Shimmer and Shine. I played around in their newly developed immersive and interactive Vr experience; sat in on a recording session for Shimmer and Shine; stopped in to say hi to Ciro Nieli, executive producer for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and see his cool office; and viewed all kinds of creativity in progress during the studio tour.
And let me tell you: the experience was awesome.
As in, so awesome, I’m wondering how Alternate Me could get a job there. Because let’s be honest – there are office jobs that look like The Office, and then there are workplaces like Nickelodeon, which has slime stairs, a SpongeBob wall,...

“Rocko’s Modern Life” is about to take a fresh look at modern life, and the animated wallaby — who hasn’t been seen since 1996 — isn’t exactly a huge fan of what he sees.
The opposite could be said of his fans, who gave a rapturous ovation to the first footage screened publicly of the new movie, “Rocko’s Modern Life: Static Cling.” The revival special doesn’t debut until 2018, but Comic-Con attendees got to see Rocko, Heffer, and Filburt return to earth — after being stuck in space for the last 20 years — and witness how they experience a modernized O-Town for the first time.
“The last time we saw our heroes, they were in outer space. This picks up exactly where we left off,” director Cosmo Segurson said during the hour-long panel discussion. “They’re reacting to now. The characters have not changed — decidedly so.”

Raymond Depardon’s documentary follows a judge who must decide whether psychiatric hospital patients can be allowed back into society
A young woman stares across a table at the judge who is reviewing her case. Her gaze is both searingly intense and curiously blank. Holding herself preternaturally still, muscles tensed against the turmoil of emotions, she pleads to see the two-year-old daughter who has been removed from her care. “Not all the time, I accept that. But just to change her diaper, to love her.” If there’s a more achingly sad moment in any film of the 2017 Cannes film festival, it’s hard to imagine what it could be. For 12 Jours, veteran documentarian Raymond Depardon (Modern Life, Journal de France) turns his lens on to the desperate, broken souls of the patients who have been involuntarily committed into the care of a Lyon psychiatric institution.

Chicago – Gore Verbinski is no stranger to the spooky. He always creates these tense, terror-filled scenes that effectively frighten us. His films, from “Ring” to “Rango”, each are compelling enough to keep our attention, not matter how absurd they transform into. Boy, does he ever deliver in the gorgeously grotesque “A Cure for Wellness.”
Rating: 3.0/5.0
I grew up in what can easily be considered the golden era of fucked up cartoons. My formative years were filled with outrageous, absurdist shows like “Ren & Stimpy,” “Rocko’s Modern Life,” “Aaahh!!! Real Monsters,” and “Courage the Cowardly Dog.“ Each of them probably has something to do with my macabre sensibilities and Gore Verbinski perfectly mirrors my own predilections. The most powerful part of any Verbinski is the visual storytelling and “A Cure for Wellness” proves that he works best when the camera tells the story for him. The best way to describe his...

Chicago – Iconic and historical are the two apt terms for a film directed by an African American woman, the first to be distributed theatrically, Was it the 1920s? 1940s? It had to be the 1970s. No, it was 1992 when that barrier was broken, with the film “Daughters in the Dust,” directed by Julie Dash.
“Daughters of the Dust” is a lyrical cinematic poem about transition and pride. In the early 20th Century, the children of slaves were making their first movements from the South during “The Great Migration” – when African Americans sought more independence in the industrial North. “Daughters” highlights the residents of St. Simons Island in Georgia, a settlement for a freed family named Peazant – who practiced Creole “Gullah” ancestry, which observed African tribal traditions during their time in America. The older and more established residents are wary of the traveling ways of the new generation, and the presence...

Three decades ago, execs at pioneering kids network Nickelodeon realized that wanted to do more than just air old comedy repeats (“Dennis the Menace”) and Canadian imports (“You Can’t Do That on Television”). But this was the early days of cable, and there were no budgets.
That’s how the network’s first game show, “Double Dare,” came to be produced at the local PBS station in Philadelphia. “Nickelodeon couldn’t do [shows] in La and they couldn’t do them in New York because the cost was too prohibitive,” recalled host Marc Summers. “They found out that the PBS station in Philly, Whyy, wanted to open up a production wing, so the station said, ‘If you help us, we’ll help you. Would you put ads in the trade magazines and say, ‘Hey, we had this great experience down in Philly,’ so other people will come knocking on our...

Kevin Meaney, stand up comedian and actor who starred in the TV adaptation of “Uncle Buck,” died Friday, October 21 at his home in Forestburgh, New York. He was 60.
“It is true as confirmed to me by his family. It is a tremendous loss to the comedy community as well. He was loved and will be missed,” Meaney’s agent Tom Ingegno told Laughspin. The comedian was scheduled to perform in East Providence, R.I. on Saturday night. No cause of death has been determined.
Meaney was a breakout star of the ‘80s comedy scene, appearing on the “Uncle Buck” TV series inspired by the John Candy film of the same name, and various late night shows including “The Tonight Show” and “Late Night with David Letterman.” He was best known for his catchphrase, “That’s not right!,” said to be an imitation of his mother.

Everyone’s favorite wallaby, talking cow and neurotic turtle are returning to TV.
Nickelodeon announced Thursday afternoon it has ordered a TV movie of “Rocko’s Modern Life,” the cartoon comedy which originally aired on the channel in the mid-’90s.
Rocko, Heffer and Filburt will all return to O-Town, though voice casting has yet to be confirmed for the revival.
“What I have found by bringing these characters back is that it’s not so much about nostalgia, but a sense that they still feel relevant and fresh to me, and after 20 years, they can’t wait to comment on modern life in the 21st century,” creator Joe Murray said in a statement. “They still have a lot to say.”

As you undoubtedly know, San Diego’s Comic-Con International happened this past weekend, and I was fortunate to be amongst the tens of thousands of attendees. There was, as always, a mega-ton to see and do, and it was hard to keep the Fomo (Fear Of Missing Out) from getting completely out of control over the 4.5 days of the con. To stay sane, though, at some point you just have to accept that you’re going to miss a bunch, and focus on what you do have the opportunity to see.

We look back fondly at the innate weirdness of Nickelodeon's 90s show The Adventures Of Pete And Pete...
At some point in the early 1990s – I forget the exact year, but research tells me it must have been somewhere around late 1993 or early 1994 – something unbearably exciting happened in our suburb of Merseyside. The rumours went around the school playground in hushed whispers: “Have the cable vans been to your street yet?” Yes, cable TV was on its way to Crosby, meaning that for the first time, a world of viewing beyond the ordinary four terrestrial channels was available to homes without a whacking great ugly satellite dish glued to the outside.
Aside from the three major Sky titans – the football, the movies and The Simpsons – by far the biggest reason we all wanted to get cable was access to not one, not two, but three channels dedicated...

Nickelodeon has confirmed that it’s making a NickToons movie, because no one ever went broke betting on millennials' nostalgia for their own childhood. Paramount and Nickelodeon have tapped Napoleon Dynamite's Jared Hess to direct, with a script by Hess and his wife and writing partner Jerusha Hess. There aren’t many details yet, but Deadline reports that the film will combine characters from across the Nickelodeon universe, as well as incorporate live-action segments in the manner of Who Framed Roger Rabbit? We don’t know which NickToons will be featured in the film yet, but Rugrats, Ren & Stimpy, Rocko’s Modern Life, Aaahh! Real Monsters, The Angry Beavers, SpongeBob SquarePants, The Wild Thornberrys, Rocket Power, and CatDog are all on the table. (What this means for the planned Hey Arnold! TV movie is unknown.) Now we are just left to wonder who the live-action actors will be, and...

Napoleon Dynamite’s Jared Hess will helm Nickelodeon’s cinematic nostalgia trip, Nicktoons, starring the Rugrats and more…
Not content with creating a channel dedicated to 1990s reruns and commissioning a new Hey Arnold! TV movie, Nickelodeon has gone one step further with the nostalgia – it's announced a cinematic feature film.
This movie – going by the title Nicktoons – will include characters from Rugrats, Ren & Stimpy, Rocko’s Modern Life, Aaahh! Real Monster, and The Angry Beavers. They’ll all interact together in one big story, as opposed to a series of sketches.
Jared Hess of Napoleon Dynamite, Nacho Libre and Gentlemen Broncos has signed up to direct. He’ll work on the script, as well, with his wife and regular collaborator Jerusha Hess (she worked on all three of those films, too).

A few months ago it was announced that Nickelodeon Films and Paramount Pictures would be developing a live-action/animated crossover movie called Nicktoons. The film was originally pitched to the studio as “a Justice League or Avengers-esque team-up film,” but with classic characters from Nickelodeon's '90s cartoon series including Rugrats, Angry Beavers, Hey Arnold!, Rocko’s Modern Life, Doug, Ahh! Real Monsters, Ren and Stimpy, and more. The movie is sure to provide a nostalgia explosion for kids of the '90s.

Nickelodeon has been spending some time in its prestigious archives, sifting through the likes of Ren & Stimpy, Rocko’s Modern Life, The Wild Thornberrys and the beloved Hey Arnold! series as it looks to bring back the NickToons of yesteryear. Paramount Pictures is reportedly in early stages of development of a live-action/animated "Nicktoons" movie which would bring together various 1990s fan-favorite cartoons like "Rugrats," "Angry Beavers," "Hey Arnold!," "Rocko’s Modern Life," "Ren & Stimpy" and more.
The Tracking Board reported the news and says the aim would be a movie that crosses over these many characters ala "The Lego Movie" or Marvel's "The Avengers". Paramount is said to be currently trying to secure the rights to each of the shows they wish to include in this crossover movie.
Mary Parent and Cale Boyter's Disruption Entertainment would produce the film with script writers currently being sought. The news comes on the heels of a report this week that Nickelodeon is thinking or rebooting some of its fan-favorite 1990s cartoons.

There once was a student at CalArts who, it would seem, liked the louder, grating Nickelodeon shows of his ‘90s youth, favoring the hyperactive soundscape of the likes of Rocko’s Modern Life and Angry Beavers over more plot-driven, dare we say, “serious” fare for the age group like WB’s Batman and Superman cartoons. Applying to Cartoon Network’s Cartoonstitute, he won a production deal and launched Regular Show, now in its sixth season with some 180-episodes. And the show is…loud. For all the kids who stayed up late throwing Halo parties in their parents’ basements, watching Aqua Teen Hunger Force, this is another entry into the late-night, delirium cartoon, just smart enough to make adults think they’re not watching addle-minded idiocy, and definitely dumb enough to make teens think they’re not learning anything.

Another year in the books, everyone! This week, Vulture will be publishing our critics' top-ten lists. Enjoy. 1. Frankie Cosmos, Zentropy Modern life is a shouting match. This isn’t exactly news, of course, but something about 2014 felt like a breaking point — the year society’s collective caps-lock button got jammed. In times like this, it seems as if the only ones we can trust are the lowercase people, like the humble but devastatingly sharp 20-year-old songwriter Greta Kline. A kind of teen-girl Ziggy Stardust, the Manhattan-bred Kline goes by the sardonically grand stage name Frankie Cosmos, and the ten songs on her first proper album, Zentropy (following years of self-recorded demos you can still peruse on her Bandcamp page), are highly articulate mumbles. When she plays live, she closes her squinted eyes tight, as if she were trying to disappear inside of herself; her drummer-boyfriend Aaron Maine (stage name: Ronnie Ronaldo,...
