A biography of a wild fire...
spencer13313 June 2012
Warning: Spoilers
This is a story of a raging forest fire in the Rocky Mountains of Montana. It highlights not only the U.S. Forest Service's role in managing such fires, but also the role of parachuting firefighters called 'Smoke Jumpers'.

This Walt Disney production presents details on 'Smokey The Bear' and an overview of wildfires, for both better and worse. A reconnoiter via airplane at low altitude illustrates the uses of forest resources in such a diverse ecological environment. A newly ignited fire is discovered - this fast growing conflagration is code named 'Jeremiah'. All of the resources of the U.S. Forest Service are called into action, including a team of 'Smoke Jumpers that will drop directly into the blaze. The battle ensues. As the fire rages out of control we see the view from the imperiled L-4 Fire Lookout Tower. A maximum effort finally brings the 'Fire Called Jeremiah' under control and the flames are extinguished.

First airing in 1961, this program was one of the first to show the ravages of wildfire and the concerted efforts to control them. It is an early advocate for a Science-Based National Forest Fire Policy and forest conservation.
