Sarah Polley, at the Telluride Film Festival for the world premiere of Women Talking, her latest film as a director, acknowledged how lucky she was as an actress to have worked with so many female filmmakers. They told her to be “fierce” when they saw that she wanted to work behind the camera.
Women Talking, based on Miriam Toew’s celebrated novel about a group of Mennonite women having to confront sexual assaults committed by men feeding their desires, is a powerhouse exploration of the female imagination.
“This film began with three women talking a lot,” Polley said. She was referring to Dede Gardner as producer through Plan B Entertainment, and Frances McDormand as a cast member and producer via her Hear/Say Productions, and Polley herself.
Polley cited three female directors she’d worked with who helped pave the way for her as a director: Audrey Wells on her 1999 feature Guinevere; Kathryn Bigelow,...

We’re still a couple of weeks out from The Boys returning with its second season, but based on the footage we’ve seen so far, it certainly looks as if we’re in for another wild ride. One that may even top the first run of the show, which was one of the best things that we’d seen on television in a long time.
Of course, trying to predict how something as crazy as The Boys is going to end up is a fool’s errand, but let’s not forget that it won’t be the only new thing arriving on Amazon Prime in September. Far from it, in fact.
Earlier today, the streaming service announced their entire line-up of new titles for next month and it’s a meaty list, comprising both films and television shows. And though The Boys may be the highlight for many...

An election season is fast-approaching in the U.S. So for its new releases in September 2020, Amazon Prime is bringing back one of its most political shows.
The Boys season 2 premieres its first three episodes on September 4. Though the show on its face is a superhero story, viewers of season 1 will know it’s really about America’s troubling embrace of entertainment with fascism. Sounds fun and not at all terrifying right before a presidential election!
That’s not the only bleak Amazon original on the schedule for September. British TV adaptation Utopia arrives on September 25. This Gillian Flynn-produced series follows fans of a comic book who believe it predicts…world-ending pandemics. Darn it. Amazon’s only original film this month is a…documentary about voter suppression from Liz Garbus called All In: The Fight for Democracy. Yikes.

As one of the weirder “back to school” seasons in living memory rolls out, Hulu is heading back to school in its own way for September 2020.
The biggest Hulu original arriving to the streaming services stream this month is season 2 of coming-of-age comedy Pen15…which of course stars two adults who have already come of age playing their middle school selves.
Speaking of middle school, perhaps the biggest non-original addition to the Hulu library this month is the arrival of all The Twilight Saga movies on September 1. That should prove to be a real nostalgia trip for interested parties. Other library titles of note include Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle, The Terminator, and 2019’s Judy on September 25.
Bookending Hulu’s originals this month is another intriguing comedy, Woke. This series will star Lamorne Morris as a Black cartoonist who gets an unexpected wakeup call.

Hannah Simone and Elizabeth Hurley have been cast in the lead roles of the untitled CBS comedy pilot from Corinne Kingsbury, John Francis Daley, and Jonathan Goldstein, Variety has learned. Both women will also serve as producers on the show in addition to starring.
In the show, when Penelope’s (Simone) career takes off at exactly the same time as her husband Josh’s (not yet cast), they call on Penelope’s young single mom, Georgia (Hurley), to help raise their son, but what they find is Georgia needs more raising than their kid.
Penelope is further described as a smart, hard-working producer at a sports TV network, wife to airline pilot Josh, and mother of their challenging toddler, Levi. Georgia is said to be in her late 40s but looks and acts much younger. Fun-loving and a bit immature, she doesn’t have the best judgment, especially when it comes to men.

Author Anita Shreve, whose books The Pilot’s Wife and The Weight of Water made her a top-seller and were later adapted into films, has died. She succumbed to cancer at age 71, according to her publisher, Alfred A. Knopf.
Shreve’s oeuvre explored how New England women in crisis handled their affairs. She lived that in her real life as well – Shreve announced her illness last year via Facebook, saying she could not tour for her final novel, The Stars Are Fire, because of a “medical emergency.”
Jordan Pavlin, a Knopf editor, said Shreve’s “writing has touched the lives of millions of readers around the world, and she did some of her most elegant, rich, and unforgettable work in the last years of her life. Just because you’re a well-established director with award-winning hits and/or commercial successes doesn’t mean you can make any movie you want. Just ask Martin Scorsese, Spike Lee, Sofia Coppola, Darren Aronofsky, and more. All these auteurs have had passion projects over the years they’ve had to kill or put on indefinite hiatus for a variety of reasons, which is a shame given how incredible all of them sound on paper.

Place Beyond the Pines: Bier’s Ungainly Period Piece Revels in Unintentional Gaffs
Danish director Susanna Bier’s second English language film, Serena, has gained a bit of notoriety after an unexpected delayed theatrical release in the Us. A melodramatically inclined period piece based on a novel by Ron Rash (author of The World Made Straight, of which an adaptation was released earlier this year), the lush production design and starry cast creates a misleading veneer, which slowly gives way to a rather kooky portrait of its eponymous lead character. Presented with soberingly grim determination, the film lapses into unintentionally laughable territory, though not to a degree worthy of camp aesthetic or cult following.
Filming shortly after their award winning collaboration on 2012’s The Silver Linings Playbook, the first onscreen reunion of Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper finally saw a premiere at the 2014 London Film Festival and reactions have been...

No American actor in recent memory has seen a career ascend as high and as quickly as Jennifer Lawrence. Five years ago, almost nobody knew her name. Today, she headlines the biggest franchise in Hollywood, is an essential part of another major film series and has become the youngest female actor to earn three Oscar nominations for acting. However, not all of her career choices can be winners, as Lawrence has given her first forgettable performance since becoming America’s movie sweetheart, in a film that is just as unremarkable: Suzanne Bier’s long-delayed period romance Serena.
For the third time in three years, Lawrence unites with Bradley Cooper, although the chemistry that ignited on Silver Linings Playbook is mostly chilled here. Director Sarah Polley describes the controversy over her infidelity drama Take This Waltz as 'too interesting to even be sensitive about'
Sarah Polley's new film is an adulterers' apologia. Or, it's the opposite: a cold shower caution against letting lust jeopardise a happy marriage. Take This Waltz – in which a woman, played by Michelle Williams, flirts with infidelity – polarised audiences from the off.
The day after its premiere at the Toronto film festival, Polley reported: "I've heard people say: 'It made me feel so good about leaving my long-term relationship.' I've heard people say: 'How could she leave such a great guy? I hated her for that.' People feel very passionately one way or another, and they also feel certain that the film backs up their point of view. I'd hoped they'd project their own relationship history on to it, even if it's an unconscious process."

Almost two weeks following its September 30th season finale, Haven has been renewed for a third season by Syfy. The Friday night drama put up solid, steady ratings this past season and has been a nice companion piece to WWE Smackdown.
Based on the Stephen King novel The Colorado Kid, Haven follows FBI agent Audrey Parker as she investigates a small town in Maine that's dealing with a variety of supernatural afflictions known as The Troubles. The deeper she goes into the town's mysteries, the more she realizes that there may be a reason she was sent to Haven. The show stars Emily Rose (John from Cincinnati), Lucas Bryant (M.V.P.), Eric Balfour (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre), Richard Donat (The Weight of Water), and Stephen McHattie (300).
Haven returns December 6th for a stand-alone Christmas episode titled "Silent Night", with its third season premiering summer 2012. Syfy has recently granted renewals to Warehouse 13 and Alphas,...

It seems that fans of this year’s Oscar-winning director may have to wait sooner than they thought for her next project.
There has been rumbling in the blogosphere for a while that she was working with Hurt Locker producer/writer Mark Boal again, but now it looks like she hoping to land a big name ensemble cast and that the months of December and January are being circled as potential start dates.
The Wrap have managed to procure an “unofficial” email from Paramount listing the company’s upcoming projects. It states that the director has been meeting with the likes of Will Smith, Sean Penn (who she directed in the little seen The Weight of Water), Javier Bardem and Christian Bale. What a line-up!
In the same piece however, a spokesperson for Paramount claims the email “has some correct information and some inaccurate information.”

Sarah Polley's influence on Hollywood is nothing short of stunning, from her strength as a child actor fighting against Disney, to the prime roles she plays (The Sweet Hereafter, The Weight of Water), to the surprising pulp she picks so well (Dawn of the Dead). But she really made her mark when she slipped into the directorial chair for her first feature, Away From Her. Adapted from an Alice Munro story, the film earned not only critical success, but also two Oscar nominations. And now -- no joke -- she's gearing up for a feature with Seth Rogen and Michelle Williams.
Deadline Hollywood reports that she has secured financing for her 2009 Black List script Take This Waltz, with Rogen and Williams starring alongside one more, yet unpicked, actor. Centering on a romantic triangle, Williams will play a 20-something woman whose eyes wander towards her neighbor after 5 years of marriage.
