Actor Peter Spellos had over 150 screen acting and vocal performance credits to his name, but genre fans are most likely to remember him as Orville Ketchum from the slasher movie Sorority House Massacre II and its companion piece Hard to Die, as well as the brief appearance he made as the character Tracy’s father in Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare. Outside of horror, he’s best known for providing the voice of Sky-Byte in 39 episodes of the animated series Transformers: Robots in Disguise. Unfortunately, we have very sad news to share today, as it has been confirmed that Spellos has passed away at age 69 after a battle with pancreatic cancer.
Born on March 1, 1954, Spellos passed away yesterday, November 19th, at the Franciscan Hospice House in Indianapolis. His brother, James Spellos, notified TMZ that his family is planning an online “celebration of life” gathering for his fans.

I'll be honest, I don't typically listen to English anime dubs. That doesn't mean that dubs aren't important — They're the only accessible means by which blind folks who can't understand spoken Japanese can experience anime. They're also the format by which anime is broadcast on television, spreading the medium to new audiences. Seeing "Digimon Tamers" and "Fullmetal Alchemist" as they aired definitely shaped my tastes as a young person. But these days, I'm far more likely to seek out the subtitled versions. I'm a fast reader, and voice acting is a field whose nuances I've never taken the time to pick up. When given a...

When we last spoke with anime auteur Mamoru Hosoda in 2018, we discussed his cinematic inspirations, interest in women and children as protagonists, and approach to growing attention from audiences and critics overseas. His newest film, Belle, is a return to the well of cyberspace fairytales he’s drawn from multiple times in his career, and in anticipation of its U.S. release we spoke with him again via interpreter to hit some more key questions on his creative process, visual motifs and philosophy in this latest project.
The Film Stage: Your earlier films had screenplays by other writers— such as Satoko Okudera—but your last three films have all been scripted by you. With “Belle,” anime director Mamoru Hosoda introduces audiences to yet another virtual world, which he dubs “U” — a place where U can be another you, as the title character does, transforming from a shy, freckle-faced high school student, Suzu, to a Disney-style singing sensation named, well, Belle.
Elaborate, conceptually innovative metaphors for the internet are something Hosoda’s fans have come to expect from the man who oversaw the original “Digimon Adventure” short (in which characters escaping to a digital world for Pokemon-esque creature battles) as far back as 1999.
“I am perhaps the only director who has been depicting the internet in various forms for this long,” Hosoda says, noting how it was a much more hopeful space in the beginning.
That’s reflected in a realm fittingly called Oz that Hosoda imagined for his 2009 feature “Summer Wars.” In the film, a Japanese family takes its fight to Oz,...

With “Belle,” anime master Mamoru Hosoda has reimagined “Beauty and the Beast” for the metaverse set — that young generation of social media users who switch identities comfortably between the physical world and a more inviting online one.
Roughly half the movie takes place in the “real world”, while the fairy-tale portion is set on an ultra-popular virtual platform called “U,” where the main character appears as a slender pink Disney princess type: Belle.
In U, members assume an alternate identity/avatar (or “As”) that allows them to more fully express certain dimensions of their personalities. Here, Hosoda appears to have tapped into a central anxiety of modern adolescence: the concern that others could never truly know or accept all of one’s nuances and contradictions, just as in nearly every telling of this classic story, only Belle can see the goodness in the Beast.

On June 25, 2000 on Fuji TV in Japan and October 21, 2000 on Fox Kids in the U.S. an episode of Digimon aired that over 20 years later continues to haunt fans and the franchise itself alike. This was an episode that opened up a world of possibility and a plotline darker than anything else seen in the series – an episode that ended with a gigantic cliffhanger that has never been directly dealt with since.
The installment was season 2 of Digimon, episode 13. ‘The Call of Dragomon’ a.k.a. ‘His Master’s Voice.’ This episode introduced the Dark Ocean.
After all these years it continues to spark debate and analysis from fans. Why? It’s not like Digimon didn’t have its fair share of dropped plots. Why does the Dark Ocean stand out and why was its mystery never resolved? To try and answer that, we have to take a deep dive...

To this day the second season of Digimon, known as Digimon Adventure 02 in Japan, is divisive. Some love how it expanded the world of Digimon and gave us a look into how the original characters aged up. Others aren’t fans of how the series handled its overall plot and that the new characters couldn’t hold up to the originals. The new character that received the most criticism was Davis, the new leader of the team. He’s loud, obnoxious, spends way too much time trying to hit on Kari, and generally just makes a fool of himself. Why is this guy the new leader? Why would Tai give Him the goggles, the de facto sign of a Digimon leader?
Why wasn’t T.K. the leader? After all, he had more experience with the Digimon since he was part of the original team in season one. He was much more relaxed,...

It’s been amazing to witness the growth of the anime industry in America. It used to be extremely difficult to find anime in the country and even then, it was a very select handful of programs that were only available with questionable dubs. Over the course of a few decades this niche genre of animation hasn’t just become a mainstream obsession, but it’s now actively sought by streaming services. Anime’s popularity in America has reached a point where there are now multiple streaming services that offer ways to consume this content. There’s no need to get unnecessarily overwhelmed with all of these options for where to get anime. Here’s a helpful breakdown of not just the anime-exclusive streamers, but also the services that you may already have that are full of satisfying anime content.

The end of 2020 marked the English-language release of Digimon Card Game, the new trading card game based on the eponymous digital monsters. Like the previous iterations, and the anime they all draw from, Digimon Card Game is about digivolving your favorite creatures in order to eventually overwhelm your opponent. Whether it’s summoning from your hand, or growing them from digi-eggs as hatchlings, Digimon involves always being on the offensive to achieve victory.
A standard game plays out between two players, each having five life points, represented by “security cards,” and the winner is the player who removes the other’s life and deals a killing blow. Moves are determined by a ten point gauge—at the beginning of each round, you have ten points you can spend on any of your possible moves. However, this meter is shared on the field between both players, and if anything...

Going into Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna I was apprehensive. The previous installment in the Digimon Adventure series, the six tri. movies, crashed and burned so badly it killed any enthusiasm I had for that original Adventure continuity. Starting off with so much potential they quickly devolved into awkward fan service (of all kinds), bad pacing, and character beats that just made no sense. There was no cohesion, little fun, and next to nothing of what made Digimon so special for a generation of fans.
This movie is an apology for tri. It does everything right that tri. failed at. Last Evolution Kizuna quickly rights the ship, discarding the lame cliffhanger from the end of the final tri. film and mostly acts as though those films never happened. Instead we get a redo of the emotional arc of what tri. had originally been setting up, the characters trying to make...

Pokémon is not the only series based on kids that find and collect pocket-sized monsters which they can use to duel each other. After the media franchise rose to popularity during the early 90s, numerous other companies entered the market to cash in on this surprising new trend with properties of their own. These included Yu-Gi-Oh! and, of course, Digimon.
For those of you who aren’t familiar with the source material, Digimon tells the familiar story of a group of youngsters who get sucked into a virtual reality which they must try to both save and escape via befriending a certain species of digital monsters – also known as Digimon – that can evolve into cooler, more powerful forms depending on the level of trust they have with their human partners.
Sound familiar? It’s supposed to. Still, Digimon may not only be connected to Pokémon in terms of concept and story.

In the wake of the ongoing pandemic that has gripped the world, gamers have had good reason to stay home and partake in their favourite hobby. With all this extra downtime, publishers have begun doing their bit to help keep folks happy and entertained while they’re stuck indoors. In other words, plenty of companies – like Ubisoft, Amazon and Sony – have rolled out a bunch of eye-catching sales, as well as a bevy of free games, to help keep us busy in these trying times.
Case in point: Sony has just dropped a huge PlayStation Store sale that slashes up to 75% off the price of around 250 video games. Dubbed the “Save Up To 75% Sale,” the new promotion features an assortment of some of the biggest and best titles on PS4, such as Far Cry, Alien, Doom, Dragon Age, Assassin’s Creed, Battlefield, Mass Effect, Yakuza, Mortal Kombat, Watch Dogs, Judgment, The Sinking City,...

According to sources close to Wgtc – the same ones who told us National Treasure 3, Now You See Me 3 and Scream 5 were in development, all of which were correct – Disney is currently putting together a live-action adaptation of the popular Japanese children’s cartoon and game series Digimon.
From what we understand, the project is still in the earliest stages of its development and was made possible after Disney acquired Twentieth Century Fox, with our sources confirming that the Mouse House now has the rights to produce a live-action film based on the property. When the movie will appear in theaters, who will star in it, or which storyline will provide the basis for its plot, remains to be seen, but it’s definitely being developed behind closed doors, we’re told.

That sadly didn’t happen thanks to the coronavirus pandemic but now American fans will finally get a chance to see the film when it’s released to home media (Blu-ray/DVD) on July 7, 2020 thanks to Shout! There are many exciting new anime series that have debuted in recent years, but for some anime fans there’s a special level of nostalgia reserved for the long-running shonen series like Dragon Ball, Naruto, and One Piece that ran for years during a formative period for anime in America. One of the most popular series from this period is Bleach, Tite Kubo’s action series follows Ichigo, a teenager who earns the supernatural abilities of a Soul Reaper, who heads on a revenge mission into the spirit world. Bleach’s anime produced 366 episodes and ran for nearly a decade before ending in 2012. Now, almost ten years later it’s been announced that Bleach will receive a sequel anime series that explores the manga’s “Thousand Year Blood War” arc.

Normally a television series only releases its episodes in volume DVD releases when a studio wants to maximize sales and allow eager consumers to buy up small batches of episodes before an entire season or series is available for purchase. However, when a series has been over for almost a decade and when you just released a full season set for the first run months before, starting to release that same season in volume sets afterward isn’t just odd, it’s downright stupid. This is the route that’s been taken for Digimon: Digital Monsters which saw a release of the entire first season on DVD earlier this month but is now being cut into halves for individual volume releases.

Perhaps the best cartoon series to come out of the late 90s craze over Pokemon and other similar battling monsters concepts, Digimon: Digital Monsters did what few cartoons (even today) have the guts to do: tell a long-form story without feeling the need to rehash half of the previous episode in each new installment. As cartoons go, that’s as close to showing respect for a child’s ability to follow a story as any series gets. The impressively long first season of Digimon had enough plot wrapped inside that it essentially plays out in acts, with each one giving the seven kids at the center of the story and those watching at home time to acclimate before taking various twists and turns as they face down a big bad boss character.
