It's been an eventful nine months for The Musketeers - both on- and off-screen - since we last saw Athos, Aramis, Porthos and D'Artagnan ride off into the sunset.
Launching with an audience of 9.3m in January 2014, the period romp became the BBC's biggest new drama since Call The Midwife - but while a second series was quickly ordered, the show was soon hit by the loss of its chief antagonist.
Departing for Doctor Who, Peter Capaldi - who'd played devious Cardinal Richelieu - left The Musketeers without a villain, but when Digital Spy visited the Prague set in September, spirits among the cast and crew were far from dampened.
"No disrespect of course to the great Mr Capaldi..." says actor Howard Charles, the burly Porthos, "...but Marc Warren as Rochefort is the next best thing."

The BBC has premiered a new first-look trailer for the second series of The Musketeers.
Adrian Hodges' period adaptation will return to BBC One on January 2, with a Us premiere following on BBC America on Saturday, January 17.
Tom Burke, Santiago Cabrera, Howard Charles and Luke Pasqualino all return for the new episodes, with the launch trailer giving viewers a first look at new additions including Marc Warren (Hustle) as the villainous Comte de Rochefort and Antonia Thomas (Misfits) as Samara.
Previewing his adaptation of Alexandre Dumas's 1844 novel, Hodges previously said of series two: "I think this is a more demanding journey than before, as we've upped the serial element and taken the show in a slightly tough and perhaps more surprising direction.
"It's everything you might expect but taken a degree or two further than last time. The tone remains the same but this is a darker and sexier Musketeers.

When Doctor Who returned to our screens in 2005, it resurrected the notion of airing kid-friendly drama on a Saturday night, with Merlin and more recently Atlantis attempting to fill the void whenever Who was absent.
With The Musketeers, the BBC is taking a stab (no pun intended) at reviving another TV staple - the glossy Sunday night family drama - and on this early evidence, Primeval creator Adrian Hodges's revamp of the Alexandre Dumas classic is a palpable hit.
Hodges makes The Three Musketeers work for a modern age by essentially using Dumas's 1844 story as the template for a period procedural - right down to the tongue-lashing they receive from Hugo Speer's Captain Treville in his office, our Musketeers are cast as the maverick cops of 17th century Paris.

BBC One has released its first action shot from the set of The Musketeers.
Billed as a "fresh and contemporary take" on Alexandre Dumas's classic novel, the drama stars Skins actor Luke Pasqualino as D'Artagnan.
The 23-year-old is seen at the forefront of the newly released image, alongside Merlin's Santiago Cabrera (Aramis), The Hour's Tom Burke (Athos) and theatre actor Howard Charles (Porthos).
Filming has recently wrapped on the ten-part series from Primeval co-creator Adrian Hodges, which is set to launch in early 2014.
Hodges said: "I'm thrilled we can finally release the first image since wrapping filming on The Musketeers. I hope the picture gives a good idea of the look and intensity of the Musketeers themselves, and a hint of the excitement of each powerful, dramatic and action-filled episode."
Upcoming Doctor Who star Peter Capaldi will also feature in the series as the shadowy Cardinal Richelieu.

The Movie Pool gets a Milla Jovovich fix from The Three Musketeers 3D Blu-ray!
The Set-up
The Musketeers must foil a plot by Milady (Milla Jovovich) and the Duke of Buckingham (Orlando Bloom) against the French king and queen. Also stars Logan Lerman and Ray Stevenson.
Directed by: Paul W.S. Anderson

Director Paul W.S. Anderson's 3D take on The Three Musketeers is unlike any other adaptation of the Alexandre Dumas classic. Other takes may have emphasized the comedy or the action, but this film takes the interpretation to a whole other level. Anderson's Musketeers is outrageous, silly, historically inaccurate, loud, and totally preposterous. It is also incredibly entertaining, an impressive guilty pleasure if there ever was one.
Anderson has been widely criticized as a director for his over-the-top films, but you cannot deny that they are fun to watch. The Resident Evil films, starring his real-life wife Milla Jovovich,...

Paul W.S. Anderson's The Three Musketeers arrives on 3D Blu-ray, Blu-ray and DVD on March 13. I have enjoyed watching the various incarnations of this classic tale over the years, with some being better than others. A number of great actors have portrayed the Musketeers over the years. In this incarnation Matthew Macfayden (Frost/Nixon) plays Athos, Ray Stevenson (The Punisher) plays Porthos, Luke Evans (Immortals, Clash of the Titans) plays Aramis, and Logan Lerman (Percy Jackson & the Olympians) plays D'Artagnan.
The supporting cast includes Orlando Bloom (Lord of the Rings and Pirates of the Caribbean films), Milla Jovovich (Resident Evil films) and Christoph Waltz (Inglourious Basterds). The story follows the Musketeers as they embark on a dangerous and legendary mission across Europe to save both their King and country – “all for one and one for all.”
I did not see this in theaters, but enjoyed it more than I expected on Blu-ray.

Actor Logan Lerman's grandfather inspired him to chase a leading role in the new The Three Musketeers movie adaptation - because the Alexandre Dumas novel was one of only two books he escaped Germany with during World War Two.
The young star, who plays D'Artagnan in the 3D film, admits his granddad was very proud when he heard the teenager had landed the coveted role.
Lerman reveals, "My grandfather had to leave his home in Berlin as a child during World War Two... He only took two books with him... and one of them was The Three Musketeers. That was what made me decide to do this movie.
"Every week, I go to my grandfather's house for breakfast, and he's so excited about my being a musketeer."
Lerman also shot the film in Germany.

To be too harsh on Paul W.S. Anderson's The Three Musketeers doesn't seem fair. In fact, it feels like I'd be critiquing a four-year-old for coloring outside the lines. However, even a four-year-old learns by the time they are six that to make a pretty picture you have to be less careless with your strokes. Strangely enough, Anderson has been making Hollywood features for 16+ years and it would appear all he's done is stop coloring with crayons and is now splattering his canvas with high-end 3D paint.
All things considered, The Three Musketeers has got to be one of the dumbest period actioners I've ever seen, but not dumb in the way a movie like The Mummy is dumb, in that it's brainless action. This movie is just plain dumb from the top down. It makes no sense, it's a tonal mess and hot air lifted boats take precedence...

You might have seen the trailers for Paul W.S. Anderson's version of The Three Musketeers, naturally shot in 3D, and been left wondering if the movie is really for you. The film is on screens today, and to aid you in making the crucial ticket-buying decision the first few minutes of the film have landed online. They're not in 3D, but I think you'll get the idea anyway. Let's take an inventory. Here we've got improbably crossbows, two failed attempts at romantically witty repartee, a bit of Assassin's Creed cosplay, freeze-frame character introductions that would have been dated a week after Snatch came out, and some Hudson Hawk-level silliness involving Leonardo Da Vinci. All things considered, I think I'll just stay home at watch Hudson Hawk one more time. I'll admit that I do like the jokiness of a character asking Orlando Bloom's character "who are you?...

If Sherlock Holmes could be successfully steampunked into a rakish action hero, there's no reason The Three Musketeers couldn't be gearpunked into some tolerable 17th century equivalent -- and Athos, Porthos, Aramis and young D'Artagnan are actually soldiers, so no serious character tweaking is required to send them off into repeated swashbuckling setpieces. It's not the addition of airships and male dangly earrings that make Paul W.S. Anderson's take on Alexandre Dumas' classic, much-adapted adventure such a drag, it's everything else -- the incoherence, the anvil-heavy dialogue, the lack of anything beyond the broadest of characterizations.

Despite there already being several adaptations already, this weekend will see the opening of the first 3-D adaptation of The Three Musketeers, still based on the classic story by author Alexandre Dumas, but directed by Resident Evil: Afterlife's Paul W.S. Anderson.
There might be some who cringe at the thought of Anderson, a known genre director, tackling Dumas' text, but Anderson has previously revealed that his version is "exactly the story of The Three Musketeers," only told "in a slightly different way." It will still follow a young D'Artagnan (Logan Lerman) as he travels to Paris to hopefully join the Three Musketeers — Athos (Matthew Macfayden), Porthos (Ray Stevenson), and Aramis (Luke Evans) — and will still see the evil Cardinal Richelieu (Christoph Waltz) plotting against the King and Queen. Still, that may not be enough to convince the literati to watch the movie this weekend.

Before they were a delicious candy bar, "The Three Musketeers" were the heroes of Alexandre Dumas' 1844 novel (and, in 1993, a much-needed paycheck for a then drug-hungry Charlie Sheen).
Now Paul W.S. Anderson, the man behind the "Resident Evil" franchise, has seen fit to rewrite Dumas in the form of a 3-D steampunk adventure with lots o' explosions and his wife, Milla Jovovich. Are we complaining? Hells no. See why for yourself with six clips from "The Three Musketeers."
1. England It Is. Logan Lerman's young D'Artagnan learns that lips are mightier than the sword.
2. It Was An Off Day. The Musketeers took on 10 soldiers each, a paltry sum by their standards. #humblebrag
3. Let's Even The Odds. Apparently all you need to carve your way through dozens of armed guards are a sword and a Lot of speed ramps. Thanks, Mr. Cameraman!
4. They Were Not The Decoys, I Was. Seems...

So, from what I understand, some press screenings of Summit's The Three Musketeers have already taken place and the film currently holds a 29% rating at Rotten Tomatoes with quotes such as Michael Phillips (Chicago Tribune) saying, "Seriously: What the hell?" and Peter Howell of the Toronto Star saying, "The very existence of this film illustrates barrel-scraping desperation of the Hollywood kind." Not a good start, and it would appear that's where it will end... for now. My screening of Three Musketeers here in Seattle was originally slated for Tuesday, October 18. It was cancelled and it wasn't rescheduled. I'm debating going to a matinee on Friday morning and maybe you can help me out... Check out the newly released first five minutes of this 2011 edition of Alexandre Dumas' classic, which is also in 3D mind you, and see what you think. Worth my time, or should I say, is it...

From playing a lightning thief to a swashbuckling hero, 19-year-old Logan Lerman dons a wig, puffy shirt and fierce fencing face to play D'Artagnan, ally and friend to the noble and fearless Three Musketeers, Athos, Porthos and Aramis.
At the hands of director Paul W.S. Anderson (Resident Evil), Alexander Dumas' famed 19th century tale of a trio of honourable fighters, and the young man eager to join their ranks, gets a modern twist thanks to its 3D visuals, a more comedic approach and, according to Lerman, a lot more gadgets.
We recently spoke to the actor, on the phone from Vancouver, about what it was like shooting The Three Musketeers in German castles, learning to fence and how Gene Kelly influenced his performance.

Their credo is succinct and memorable, their facial hair is always interesting and their fencing skills, second to none. It's no wonder Hollywood has fallen head over heels for Alexandre Dumas' Three Musketeers - Athos, Porthos and Aramis - who, along with their friend and fellow do-gooder D'Artagnan, stop the mischievous Cardinal Richelieu from starting a war.
Though the story dates back to 1844, a new 3D version of The Three Musketeers is headed to theatres this weekend, with Paul W.S. Anderson (Resident Evil) at the helm and a new band of bearded and take-no-guff men (Ray Winstone, Matthew Macfayden, Luke Evans and Logan Lerman) fighting for what they believe in.
With that in mind, we're taking a look back a handful of Hollywood's best Musketeer adaptations.

A stylish updating of Alexandre Dumas' classic tale, Paul W.S. Anderson mixes 3D steampunk with good old-fashioned swashbuckling, pulling together an ensemble cast that includes (as the Musketeers themselves) Matthew Macfadyen as Athos, Luke Evans as Aramis and Ray Stevenson as Porthos, plus Logan Lerman as D'Artagnan, Milla Jovovich as Milady de Winter, Gabriella Wilde as Constance and Orlando Bloom as the villainous Duke of Buckingham. ComingSoon.net traveled to the London junket for the film to speak with Anderson and the cast about the updating of the original text, sword fighting in 3D and bringing Resident Evil -style action to the 17th century. For those of you who have always wanted a 3-D big screen adaptation of The Three Musketeers from the director of Resident Evil: Afterlife, your time has almost come. For those of you a little skeptical, several new preview clips have been released to convince you that Paul W.S. Anderson hasn't destroyed author Alexandre Dumas' classic story.
Anderson has promised that his Three Musketeers is "exactly the story of The Three Musketeers" but told "in a slightly different way", and will still see a young D'Artagnan (Logan Lerman) head to Paris to meet up with the Three Musketeers — Athos(Matthew Macfayden), Porthos (Ray Stevenson), and Aramis (Luke Evans). Together, they will band together to bring down the evil Cardinal Richelieu (Christoph Waltz). Just, in 3-D and featuring giant sailing ships attached to hot-air balloons that have battles in the sky with cannons. You know, "exactly the story of The Three Musketeers.

"The Three Musketeers" doesn't open nationwide in the United States until Oct. 21, but the London premiere took place this week and all the stars were on hand looking sharp on the red carpet.
Milla Jovovich, who plays a action-heroine update of Milady de Winter, definitely stood out amongst all the guys in her black gown. The titular characters naturally had to pose together - Ray Stevenson is Porthos (below, left), Luke Evans is Aramis (below, middle) and Matthew MacFadyen is Athos (below, right).
Finally, the fourth musketeer was also on hand - Logan Lerman as D'Artagnan is below with Orlando Bloom, who plays Queen Anne's lover the Duke of Buckingham.
So far the critics are not overly complimentary of this newest re-telling of Alexandre Dumas' classic novel. The Hollywood Reporter's Neil Young says this "3D swashbuckler wields a disappointingly blunt sword" and Variety's Leslie Felperin writes, "A very 2011 take...
