A scenography city set of 40,000m2 was built in Pedra de Guaratiba, designed by Mário Monteiro and based on the novel's descriptions, including the same wide streets, city blocks and the sun shining over the houses, marking the passage of time. The city's main focal point is a centuries-old fig tree, a fundamental part of the story, elaborated to characterize the action of the weather and the wind throughout the 150 years of history.
This was one of Globo TV's most daring productions to that date, requiring a great investment since the production featured about 100 characters, almost 6,000 background actors and approximately 1,000 different scenes. Most of his sequences were shot outdoors with the involvement of approximately 5,000 people.
