If there was one thing that was going to tempt movie-goers into cinemas for some mid-budget vampire action in 2003, it was probably Bill Nighy as a vampire overlord. Or, was it the marketing campaign featuring a leather clad Kate Beckinsale? I’ll let you decide… The early noughties had already brought some decent vampire action, before we were subjected to the shimmering embarrassment to the genre that was the Twilight saga. We were also just a few short years away from seeing some proper kick-ass, sexy vampire action on the small screen with Hbc’s excellent True Blood series. The vampire genre was starting to show some signs of a re-awakening, and films such as the fun but flawed Queen of the Damned from 2002 and, of course, the awesome Blade series, were leading the bloodsucking way.
Vampires have always been a popular form of escapism for audiences and they’re still massively popular now.

Demons, witches, and devils have been around in religion and life for nearly as long as people have been around. This extends into movies as since the very beginning of motion pictures, we have attempted to capture the fears of these types of fears on film in a number of ways. Most of the media we see on it is built out from existing ideas to create a new narrative that looks to capture the interests of the general public enough to make a profit or base a movie on it. While many people know both the book and movie of The Exorcist, something like The Rite (watch it Here) that more or less came and went in the early 2010s proves that it also has an interesting story to tell. Whether or not you believe in the religious supernatural events found in either the book or the movie, it...

The late 1990s and early 2000s were a weird era for films. There is definitely an influence from Y2K, and it seemed like there was an attitude that anything goes from some and a tightening of the belt from others. The world was in an odd place, and this influenced everything in culture like music, television, and films. 2002 gave us a wide variety of horror, like Queen of the Damned, Fear Dot Com, Cabin Fever, Bubba Ho-Tep, Dog Soldiers, and Bloody Mallory. This was the end of an era and the start of another for David Arquette it seemed. A time when he tested the “leading man” waters. Unfortunately, it didn’t quite go as planned as box office bomb after box office bomb came. Films like Ravenous, Ready to Rumble, 3000 Miles to Graceland, See Spot Run, and The Grey Zone all featured Arquette in some form but...

"Anne Rice's Interview With The Vampire," a new horror series that premiered last October on AMC, was one of the surprise hits of the fall season. Reboots, revivals, adaptations, and spinoffs are nothing new in the TV landscape, but that doesn't mean they're a sure thing, either. Far from it. Countless reinterpretations and revivifications of classic hits, from older series to movies and books hit TV and streaming every year, even every season, and many fail to catch.
I don't think I'm alone in saying that I expected very little from AMC's "Interview With The Vampire" series. Anne Rice had already written an extraordinary source novel, fusing for the first time in a populist mode a potent blend of the Romantic novel and the Gothic with fresh new frames, namely, explicit supernatural elements and explicit queerness. On top of that, Neil Jordan had already adapted the novel to pitch-perfection...

If you’re a fan of true crime documentaries or early millennium classic cartoons then boy does Hulu’s list of new releases have some great news for you!
Hulu continues its implicit understanding that streaming services are basically true crime distribution machines this month with a trio of intriguing titles. While it’s not necessarily true crime per se, The Ashley Madison Affair about the notorious dating platform premieres on July 7. That will be followed by Betrayal: The Perfect Husband on July 11, which is based on a compelling podcast of the same name. The Jewel Thief arrives on July 13 to provide an account of Gerald Blanchard, one of history’s most creative criminals.
But where does the cartoon excitement comes in? Well, that’s because season 11 of Matt Groening’s beloved Futurama premieres on July 24. Fry, Leela, the Professor, and Bender will all return for a direct continuation of...

Vampires are taking a wacky bite out of summer. In Season 5 of FX and Hulu’s “What We Do In The Shadows,” Guillermo (Harvey Guillén) looks for a vampire who can give him the transformation that Nandor the Relentless has kept from him. But it may not go as planned. The beloved comedy, which takes a mockumentary look at four vampires living in Staten Island, returns on July 14.
Check out the Season 5 trailer of “What We Do In the Shadows”:
Another highly anticipated return coming to Hulu in July is the latest season of long-running animated series “Futurama.” The show’s first four seasons aired on Fox from 1999 to 2003, it was then picked up by Comedy Central for three seasons from 2008 to 2013. Now, nearly a decade later, the Mike Judge-created series will return for the first half of the 20-episode Season 8 on July 24 with the original voice cast.

With the new Fast X trailer showcasing scenes starring Paul Walker and the 7th entry in the series having been finished after his untimely passing, fans are reminded of how some films needed to be finished even though the star passed on. While Furious 7 did so with taste and tact, some pushed the envelope maybe a bit too far. Here are some of the good ones, and some of the (very) bad ones.
Game of Death (1978)
Possibly the first title that comes to mind for film aficionados when the subject of films finished after their stars passed comes up is Robert Clouse’s Game of Death. Bruce Lee passed away on July 20th, 1973, and Game of Death was finished in 1978. That is quite the gap, and this may be explained by multiple reasons of course, including the fact that a decision needed to be taken on how to proceed...

"Mayfair Witches," the new AMC+ series based on the book trilogy "Lives of the Mayfair Witches" by Anne Rice, has been looking well outside the realm of supernatural TV dramas for inspiration in season 1. You wouldn't necessarily expect to hear showrunner Esta Spalding and executive producer Michelle Ashford namecheck a 1999 Gulf War movie, but that's exactly what they did in Vanessa Armstrong's /Film interview with the duo.
"Mayfair Witches" stars Alexandra Daddario as Dr. Rowan Mayfair, a neurosurgeon who uncovers her own family link to a dynasty of witches. She's unaware of her powers at first, and this leads to her looking inside people's brains and "popping arteries like bubble gum," as Danielle Ryan put it in her "Mayfair Witches" review. No need for an endoscopy when you have a witch on the case who can show the audience what a person's dying body looks like inside.

Death and the horror genre go hand in hand. Not every scary movie features the death of a character, and horror is certainly not the only type of film in which characters die, but terrifying films deal with the business of death (i.e. the realms both near and beyond the grave). Once the cameras stop rolling and the director yells "cut," most actors walk back into the sunlight and leave the terrifying scenes they're creating behind. Every once in a while, the shadow of death seems to follow actors home, claiming them shortly after they've finished making their films. Sometimes these deaths lead to rumors of curses and jinxed productions, but they are simply one part of life's vicious circle. However, unsettling coincidences and the eerieness of seeing an actor in a role after passing on often lead to the feeling that something darker is afoot.

Plot: A sensuous, contemporary reinvention of Anne Rice’s revolutionary gothic novel, Anne Rice’s Interview with the Vampire follows Louis de Pointe du Lac, Lestat de Lioncourt and Claudia’s epic story of love, blood, and the perils of immortality, as told to journalist Daniel Molloy. Chafing at the limitations of life as a Black man in 1900s New Orleans, Louis finds it impossible to resist the rakish Lestat de Lioncourt’s offer of the ultimate escape: joining him as his vampire companion. But Louis’s intoxicating new powers come with a violent price, and the introduction of Lestat’s newest fledgling, the child vampire Claudia, soon sets them on a decades-long path of revenge and atonement.

This Interview with the Vampire review contains no spoilers.
Late Vampire Chronicles author Anne Rice was never completely onboard with the 1994 film adaptation of her book: Interview with the Vampire, which starred Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise. Taking issue with casting and other certain liberties, Rice ultimately endorsed it, but denounced its 2002 sequel, Queen of the Damned, with Aaliyah in the title role. Rice and her son Christopher have been involved with AMC’s Anne Rice’s Interview with the Vampire through its own tortured journey to series adaptation, so it seems any changes to the source material come with tacit pre-approval.
The stakes are high for AMC, about to come off its Walking Dead era, and concluding the sagas of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul. The network is entering its Anne Rice Era, turning her pages into its own next chapter, and already at work on adapting her...

Things got scary in the fourth episode of HBO Max's ballroom competition series, "Legendary," but guest judge Issa Rae came prepared. This week, each one of the houses put together a performance piece inspired by a classic horror film for the "Whorror House" theme. The results were the perfect mix of spooky and dazzling. However, Rae stole the show thanks to her tribute to the late Aaliyah's role in "Queen of the Damned."
In the 2002 film, which was based on the novel of the same name by Anne Rice, Aaliyah played Queen Akasha, the first vampire. The regal role proved the R&b singer was a rising film star thanks to the way she commanded the screen. AMC made a deal to secure the rights to 18 of the Anne Rice novels in “The Vampire Chronicles” and “Lives of Mayfair Witches” series. This means there is plenty of source material for multiple horror shows if the network wants to keep them going for years to come. Many of these shows could feature Sam Reid‘s latest incarnation of the beloved vampire character, Lestat, that was previously played by Tom Cruise in the 1994 movie adaptation of “Interview With The Vampire” and Stuart Townsend in the long-forgotten “Queen of The Damned” that featured the late singer Aaliyah as an ancient vampire that is resurrected.

Michael Rymer’s Queen of the Damned (2002) celebrates its 20th anniversary next week. The film is notable for the breakthrough performance of Aaliyah as the title character Queen Akasha. The rising singer tragically died at age 22 during post-production, with the movie offering only a glimpse of her greater talent. But 20 years on, the movie is most remembered as a famously flawed fright flick follow-up to one of the best vampire movies ever made–a rush job which doomed a promising franchise. It earned its cinematic notoriety because it ignored its natural and unnatural resources.

The immortal bloodsuckers of her Vampire Chronicles book series were provocative, dangerous, and boundary-shattering from the moment Interview with the Vampire was first published in 1976. The film adaptation of the same story was essentially produced due to overwhelming public demand.

Anne Rice, the author of the beloved "Vampire Chronicles" book series and other gothic and erotic fiction, has passed away at the age of 80 due to complications resulting from a stroke. Her son, Christopher Rice, revealed the news of her passing in a Facebook post late on Saturday night.

Anne Rice, the American writer whose Interview with the Vampire sold more than 150 million copies, has died. She was 80.
Her son Christopher Rice, also an author, announced the news via Anne Rice’s public Facebook page, writing that she had died following complications from a stroke.
“The immensity of our family’s grief cannot be overstated,” he wrote. “As my mother, her support for me was unconditional — she taught me to embrace my dreams, reject conformity and challenge the dark voices of fear and self-doubt.”
Born on October 4, 1941, in New Orleans, Rice initially struggled to find popularity, with her debut novel Interview with the Vampire receiving mixed reviews upon its release in 1976. The book, penned while she was grieving the loss of her daughter to leukemia, since has been reappraised as a key text in the modern vampire genre and spawned 11 sequels, collectively known as The Vampire Chronicles.

Queen of the Damned without Aaliyah?! Director Michael Rymer revealed in a recent interview with Vulture that Cher almost landed the lead role of Akasha, an African queen, in 2002's vampire horror film over Aaliyah. Rymer said he had "a number of meetings with actresses, including Cher," and found her to be "quite a viable Akasha," but he pushed for a different (and seemingly obvious) direction. "I just had a very strong belief that if we were going to do African queens, we had to have a person of color. I said that to the studio, and we made these long lists - Halle Berry, Regina King, an embarrassment of riches," he said.
After studio executives proposed Aaliyah for the movie, she went through a test with Rymer before he approved her for the coveted role. Rymer admitted he "put that poor girl through the wringer" and had her reciting...

Sam Reid will play the vampire Lestat in AMC’s “Interview With the Vampire,” which is based on Ann Rice’s popular novels.
Last year, AMC acquired the rights to Rice’s bestselling “Vampire Chronicles” and “Lives of the Mayfair Witches” book series, giving the network access to develop film and television projects from any of the 18 titles under both best-selling series.
The series will be available on both AMC and AMC+.
The author and her son Christopher Rice will serve as executive producers on all series and films under their deal with AMC, which gives the network and its external partners comprehensive rights to develop projects using Rice’s intellectual property.
The Rices have been trying to develop a series based on “The Vampire Chronicles” for years. In July 2018 there was a project set up at Hulu that did not move forward.
Rolin Jones will serve as creator, showrunner and executive producer of “Interview.

Sam Reid has been cast in the lead role of Lestat in AMC’s “Interview With the Vampire” series, Variety has learned.
The show, which was officially greenlit in June, is based on the Anne Rice novel of the same name. The book centers on the vampire Louis de Pointe du Lac as he relates the story of his life to a reporter, in particular how he was turned into a vampire and then mentored by Lestat de Lioncourt.
The casting could represent a long-term investment in Reid on AMC’s part. As the company has the rights to all of Rice’s “The Vampire Chronicles” books and Lestat appears in multiple entries, Reid could find himself portraying the character across multiple series. At this time, however, “Interview With the Vampire” is only “Vampire Chronicles” series that has been greenlit by AMC.

There may be a whole lot of Rice — Anne Rice, that is — in your viewing diet in the years ahead, as Variety reports that AMC Networks has acquired the film and TV rights to the best-selling author’s two most famous and extensive series of books.
The home of such other horror TV favorites as The Walking Dead and NOS4A2 has acquired the rights to Rice’s Vampire Chronicles and Lives of the Mayfair Witches canons, which encompasses some 18 novels, including titles like the original Interview with the Vampire, The Vampire Lestat, The Witching Hour and Lasher. Paul McGann, best known among fans of genre TV from Doctor Who as the eighth incarnation of the Time Lord, celebrates his 60th birthday today.
McGann initially had only a single outing as the Doctor in a TV movie aired in 1996, seven years after the series went on indefinite hiatus due to its steadily declining ratings and long before work began on the 2005 revamp, which will soon return for a second season with Jodie Whittaker’s Thirteenth Doctor.
Sometimes referred to as Enemy Within, the film was made as a pilot episode for a new series of Doctor Who produced with an American audience in mind, but fared poorly due to its radical alteration of the show’s core ideals and mishandling of established lore. However, McGann’s performance as the Doctor was still celebrated, and despite the movie’s failure he’s remained an integral aspect of the mythology.

To find any fans of Queen of the Damned you might have to talk about the book instead of the movie since quite honestly the movie was a train wreck waiting to happen. The actors were great, the idea was sound, and the whole thing should have been a wonder to watch. But somehow it all got lumped into one overly long movie that was painful to witness since the acting couldn’t make up for the poor dialogue, the insane way that it seemed to jump around, and the fact that the plot was about as generic as it got.

After regaining the rights to her Vampire Chronicles book series back in 2016, Anne Rice and her son, fellow novelist Christopher Rice, have been looking to bring Lestat to life on the small screen, and now they're heading to Hulu with the anticipated adaptation.
The Hollywood Reporter reveals the news of Vampire Chronicles being picked up by Hulu, reporting that the series is now in development at the streaming service.
Based on the popular book series, the first script for the Vampire Chronicles was penned by Anne and Christopher. The mother-son duo will also executive produce the project with David Kanter and Steve Golin from Anonymous Content, who, along with Paramount Television, picked up the rights to option 11 novels from Rice's book series back in 2017.
Bryan Fuller was previously on board the Vampire Chronicles series to help develop it with Anne and Christopher, but he amicably left the project several months ago.

The planned series based on Anne Rice’s “The Vampire Chronicles” has been put into development at Hulu, Variety has confirmed.
“The Vampire Chronicles” series follows vampire Lestat de Lioncourt who serves as hero, antihero, and narrator. Paramount Television and Anonymous Content will produce. The two companies acquired the rights to the books back in April 2017.
Bryan Fuller was previously attached to the project, but exited earlier this year. Rice will executive produce along with her son Christopher Rice, a best-selling writer in his own right, with Christopher having written the original script for the project. David Kanter and Steve Golin will also executive produce via Anonymous Content. The project is currently seeking a showrunner.
Books from the series have served as the basis for feature films in the past, like 1994’s “Interview With the Vampire” with Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt, and 2002’s “Queen of the Damned” with Aaliyah and Stuart Townsend.

Sixteen years ago today, the world said a heartfelt good-bye to the reigning R&B queen, Aaliyah. At the time of her tragic passing, the singer's iconic status was inevitable. By 15, she had a double platinum record, Age Ain't Nothing but a Number. At 17, she reappeared with music heavy hitters Missy Elliott and Timbaland at her side, releasing One in a Million, another double platinum record. Then, the star started her acting career, starring in Romeo Must Die with martial artist Jet Li, and continued acting as the vampire vixen in Queen of the Damned. In 2001, she picked up her first love, recording Billboard #1 Aaliyah—and, she achieved all of this by 22. While this list of...

This included 23 studio albums, 10 live ones, and 12 compilations. On every single one of them, the volume was certainly turned up to 11.

Deadline is announcing that Paramount Television and Annonymous Content are partnering with legendary author Anne Rice and her son, novelist Christopher Rice, to bring her series The Vampire Chronicles to television. Anne had announced on her Facebook page in November, which she frequents almost daily with news and fan interaction, that she had regained the film rights to her series of books, The Vampire Chronicles. Starting with Interview With The Vampire in 1976, the series has reached 11 books and counting, telling the tale of Lestat the Vampire and his adventures with various characters. The series is mainly set in New Orleans.
Anne Rice has been vocal throughout the years as to how she feels the series should be made. In 1994, when Interview With The Vampire first hit theaters, she was initially critical of Tom Cruise in the role of her favorite character, something for which she publicly stated she was wrong.
