Sex & Nudity

  • The female assassins breasts jiggle when running however this is censored in the German version of the game.
  • The alpha content has an enemy named 'Mr. Friendly' and his design is phallic looking.
  • Mr. Friendly never made it into the game. This is an unnecessary contribution.

Violence & Gore

  • When a humanoid is crushed or severely killed on impact, their body (including yours if you die) turns into gory skulls, body parts, eyes and gore scattered everywhere. Due to the graphics of the time, it might appear cartoonish.
  • Lots of blood and gore, in one part of the game you may encounter human bodies cut in half by lasers. Considering the slightly dated graphics and cartoonish look they give off it would be hard to find anyone disturbed by the gore in the game. Human bodies occasionally explode throughout the game but it is kinda comedic when seeing it by today's standards.
  • Corpses can be hit with a crowbar, which results in the corpse exploding into bloody chunks with blood staining the ground.
  • Definitely more gory than half life 2 because you can explode people way more easily and it looks more graphic.
  • The game is 25 years old so for nowadays standards most of the gore isn't very graphic and is kinda goofy looking.
  • Some strong violence.
  • Blood does splatter.
  • Allies such as scientists and security officers and enemies such as human grunts and assassins all bleed red blood.
  • Aliens bleed green and yellow blood.
  • You can blow up people.
  • When you blow up a human or an alien, their chunks of their bodies fly everywhere.
  • Bodies stay on the floor after being killed.
  • Blood puddles.
  • Gory looking zombies.

Profanity

  • The soldiers say "shit" fairly often.
  • Mild Language used such as Shit, Hell, Dumb Ass and many references to god. However the swear words aren't heard that often.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • If you're wounded, a scientist can administer you something that can "Ease the pain" with a syringe. This is very brief and you gain some health from it. The contents of the syringe are unknown.
  • If the player sustains heavy damage from a fall, the HEV suit the player is wearing will produce a beeping sound and say "Automatic medical system engaged. Morphine administered". The suit will do this every couple of hours.
  • One of the things a security officer can say to you is "Hey, catch me later I'll buy you a beer.", and " I could really use a cold one right now."
  • Human grunts can sometimes be seen smoking cigars.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • The first quarter of the game takes a survival horror approach with some light puzzle solving elements, however nothing as disturbing or scary as the Ravenholm section in the sequel but still may frighten some younger players.
  • The game tends to jump genres depending on sections of the game you're at. The game is mostly an action packed FPS adventure with a whimsical tone game but there is sections of puzzle solving, platforming and survival horror with a far more unsettling tone and atmosphere. The game may scare some players in parts.
  • There's some spooky stuff, but it hasn't aged well and is kinda goofy for modern standards.
  • The game contains moderate horror.
  • If you don't know anything about the game then the first chapter will be quite shocking and scary because of an experiment that goes wrong.
  • Don't get attached to any of the scientists you see, other than a couple, almost all of them are killed in disturbing ways.
  • Some aliens are gross and scary looking.
  • There are some jump scenes.
  • Most bits in the game will be quite intense because it's a first-person shooter game and you have to work things out and where to move and where to shoot certain things.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • In the beginning of "Chapter 8: On A Rail" the player is moving around the old underground railway systems on a player controlled tram. Going into certain areas trigger unsettling ghostly screaming sounds coming from unseen sources. One of these has been notoriously used for another Valve title, "Left 4 Dead".
